MAKE OUT is a genre comic anthology (mostly fantasy at this point) looking for all kinds of submissions for comics, and/or cover art. This will be a revenue share paid gig (and by paid, I don’t mean get reach, but pay your grocery bill kinda money).

Back when I was a freshman in highschool people were so outraged about this song! For an entire month people were bringing it up and making fun of it near-constantly. “It’s so terrible! So stupid!” And of course on Fridays someone would always be singing it in the locker room. 

My present-day evaluation is, this is a cool song!!! I like how candid it is. It really captures how exciting the weekend was in middle school, when parties were just starting to become a thing. It’s even a bit avant garde in the 0 to 9 or alt-lit sort of way, with the Rebecca Black’s procedural mode of description/ interest in poetically mundane details. Some observations: 

0:10-“I am Thursday’s Child.” Yes.

0:19- “Gotta be fresh gotta go downstairs” is an amazing line. 

0:31-”I see my friiiieeeendsss” is a slick autotuned refrain. And her friends are chill as actual fuck.  If tweens were that cool irl yeah I’d be fine with them driving. Drive me everywhere cool kids!!!!! 

0:33-The dramatization of front seat/back seat choice (”Which seat should I taaaake?”) was always made fun of but it’s a great detail. I like that it implied that RB woulda kicked that basic out the front seat. Heck yeah.

0:56-Whip it, ruddy-faced cool boy! Skrr-skrrrrr!!!

1:10-When you take this literally: RB was already badass for ditching the bus to hitch a ride with her joy-riding tween friends.  But now she’s doubly badass standing up in a convertable car as her other friend, also way underage, drives ~60 mph on the fucking highway! (She explicitly says it’s the highway) She. Does. Not. Give. A. Flying. Fuck. All while flanked by her utterly loyal (to the point of also risking their lives) and refreshingly unattractive posse. Any way you look at it, she’s the queen.  

1:14-“Fun, fun, think about fun, you know what it is….” This clues us into RB’s level of concentration but also feels a little asbergers-y, tbqh.

1:20-“My friend is by my right eeyyyyy..” No mention of the girl on her left, tho.. Is  Rebecca trying to send a message to Cronie B? Also these dresses are pure bar mitzvah chic. Le chiem! 

2:04-The days of the week part was also made fun of a lot but there’s a similar part in I Gotta Feeling, inexorable march of time blah blah blah. The strobing animation is exciting but the calendar flipping feels intimate/confessional, the two axes RB, like any good pop star, negotiates between. Also this bridge is probably the most sonically interesting part of the song. Weird beats and pidgin grammar…. 

2:30-OMIGOD THE RAP PART. OH MY GOD. So this guy always does the raps for this child pop production house or whatever and he hears the song and he’s like okay it’s about driving, wanting to get somewhere, rushing, I’ll make my rap about that. There’s the rushing for the bus sequence earlier in the song, but I’ll flip the dynamics, instead I’m another driver and the bus is slowing me down  “Passing in front of me is a schoolbus, tick tock tick tock,wanna scream” yeah perfect But nevermind that this makes him look like a HUGE pedophile, which he already seemed like for being an old-ass rapper coming out of the woodwork driving around at night starting his verse by shouting out a 13-year-old girl’s initials.  Love this rapper.
