Honestly, it really does sometimes and a lot of us wonder, why the hell do we still do it? Why do we continue to create art in all its forms when some random person is going to declare you a horrible person because what youāve made doesnāt exactly line up with what they want to see or what youāve written makes then feel uncomfortable? Why do we still do what we do when those people decide that when you politely explain how you makeĀ your own artĀ the way you do and throw a fit because oh fuck theyāre actually reasonable and nice, gotta make them look like an asshole for it!
One of the things about Ghost that draws so many in to it, is that it gives us only a very, veryĀ basic idea:
Satanic band using music to overthrow governments and churches, lead by a unholy Pope/Cardinal, an angry Sister Imperator, and the musicians are nameless, facelessĀ āghoulsā.
Thatās basically it. And because itās so open-ended, it gives us so much roomĀ to expand on and embellish on our own! Itās honestly amazing; you donāt have a hard-set canon to follow and have to conform to, you can really take the idea and mold it into whatever shape you decide to create!
Ghouls donāt have to represent the musician under the mask. Some people choose to do so, some people donāt. And thatās okay!Ā We never see a ghoul without their mask, we never get to see a ghoulās face while in character. Some people donāt even know who the musicians are under the masks, and thatās perfectly fine!Ā There is no requirement that your representation of a ghoul, a character, must also represent the musician underneath. Some people choose to do that, and thatās fine! Some choose to use a few characteristics of the musician but not all of them, and that is fine!Ā Itās about creatively expressing what you yourself see, not what you think everyone elseĀ wants to see. Because the first person we create for, is ourselves.
With the shit going on very recently, where a very talented, sweet artist @of-devils-and-drawings, has been driven out by someone whoās decided that her own, personal representation of a completely non-human demon, is whitewashed because he has straight hair. First off, itās not whitewashing when itās a character that does not exist in any official capacity. Swiss/Multi is a fan-created character, who plays the role of the nameless, faceless ghoulĀ on stage. How can you whitewash something that technically doesnāt exist except for what we ourselves make?! If they were representing the artist under the mask, thatās where you get into whitewashing territory and itās veryĀ not okay.
Secondly, so if you draw/give a character straight hair, that makes them white? Because thatās what that one anon basically says. Does this mean that people of mixed race are white if they have straight hair, even if their skin tone is dark? Is one small feature all it takes to invalidate someone? Because that is completely fucked up. You have people who are not white but have light skinā¦ does not having a darker skin tone make them suddenly white, does it erase their entire identity?
Going off on an artist over something like this is just pathetic. And spewing hate and insults to force them out doesnāt make you some kind of paragon of social justice, it makes you a fucking asshole and part of the damn problem. Maybe stop hating and jumping at anything you donāt like and instead act like a rational, educated person and have a polite discussion off-anon with the artist instead. You can still be just as passionate for POC representation in a fandom without being an asshole.
But what do I know, Iām just a potato.
