PART 1
Staff meetings were almost always about the wellbeing of the students, especially the performance of Darkwick's ghoul population. While there are some houses they don't worry much about, the professors still want to make sure that every house remains stable. The entirety of the staff agrees that appearance of the Inspector has been a positive for all houses. However, this meeting in particular was not about the wellbeing of the students. The chancellor finds himself being cornered as his staff voice out their frustrations.
"I can't teach my students if the stuff I use keeps breaking down." Professor Nicholas lets out a big sigh. "Mio has been a great help in fixing the facilities, but we can't keep calling him when it stops working again. We need new equipment."
Professor Dante agrees, adding in his own opinion. "I would also like to point out, a lot of the automated areas of the school aren't functioning properly. I'm not just saying this for myself, but for students who have disabilities as well. We need to fix quite a bit."
"And while we're at it," Hyde smiles. "Many of our textbooks are old. As a researcher, it's a little insulting that we can't prepare our students better with more up-to-date information. I believe it would benefit our students when they go on missions. To keep them safe."
Chancellor Cornelius sighs, understanding the frustrations of his staff. He's tried all that he can to accommodate to everyone, but it's just not possible. He knows that everyone is right.
Mio can't fix everything, and neither can the cats. And as much as he bugs the institution, the higher ups won't budge to cough up new materials for the students.
"I'm happy that we all can talk freely like this. It shows that we respect one another. Unfortunately, I don't think we can actually do anything about these issues. We don't have enough funding for everything, and the institution won't give us the funding so easily."
The professors sigh. It's then that Moby speaks up.
"I might have an idea Chancellor. If it works out well, you have to raise my salary!"

Kaito had first mentioned the auction in your small group chat. It was just rumors at the time, but he shared the screenshots from WickHive, asking the Inspector, Luca, and you for your thoughts.
"They're saying it'll likely be things people can auction off. Apparently, every house has to participate."
You furrowed your eyes at the last part. Every house? Including the exclusive ones? You simply brushed it off, knowing that it wasn't worth hassling over, especially when the information is coming from WickHive of all places. It was about a week later when you saw the actual flyer for it.
Win a date! Come to the main courtyard next weekend to bid for a chance to a romantic candlelit dinner with a lovely lady from one of the many houses!
All proceeds will go towards new equipment and material for the school. Dinner and R&R permits will be provided and paid for by the academy.
You took a picture, sending it to your group chat.
"I guess you were right Kaito."
He answers almost immediately.
"A date?! And it's all covered by the school?!"
Luca replies, "Kaito, that's only if you win the bid." Kaito's text bubble comes up immediately after reading Luca's message, but the latter adds another message before Kaito can hit send. "Now I know why they had us fill out that ballot."
Curious, you asked, "What ballot?" Kaito is the one who answers.
"Ignoring his previous diss, they had us vote for the prettiest girl in our dorm."
Another message from Kaito pops up.
"WAIT," followed by, "ANGEL."
"Yes?"
"You won't be in the auction, right?"
You sent him a flurry of laughing emojis.
"Nah. I'm in Obscuary. The school doesn't want us near the GA students on a regular day. They're not putting me in the auction."
In that moment, the Honor Student responds to the chat. "I won't be participating either!" Kaito answers with a sobbing emoji next to a prayer emoji. The Honor Student replies again. "I'm not assigned to a house, so instead they'll have me collect the ballots and have the girls fill out profile cards for the bidders!"
You swear that you heard Kaito let's out the biggest celebratory shout. Though you were curious about the auction yourself, it didn't have anything to do with you or your dorm. You bid your friends a simple farewell, continuing your walk back to Obscuary. On your way, you stopped by the campus store in order to pick up some things that your dorm mates had requested. When you walked in, Benkei was swarmed with phone calls and students. You sigh, already dreading how long it's going to take you to check out. Still, you choose to not pay much attention to the commotion, briefly hearing them make requests to the shopkeeper as you skimmed through the magazines that were out on display. You picked a random one and placed it inside of your shopping basket before going off to pick up some other items.
'I think Rui said he needed more sugar. Ed wanted some fuzzy socks, though they'll probably just get lost. And Lyca needs a sketchbook and color pencils... I think I'll get him some paint too. That way he can stop touching my makeup.'
At that thought, you go look for some makeup products as well. The school store didn't have a lot, that much you knew (and one of the few reasons that you regret coming to Darkwick), but they had enough for touch ups here and there. You're inspecting one of the lip glosses when you feel a tap on your shoulder. Turning around, you're face to face with a girl. A quick glance at her lapel lets you know she's from Frostheim.
"Yes?"
She doesn't respond immediately, simply eyeing you down and letting her gaze linger on the items in your basket. You awkwardly look elsewhere, feeling a bit sour for the way she had ignored you. The way she stands in front of you also makes you feel a bit crowded, as if she's pinning you against the shelf of products behind you. She doesn't say anything for a good while and you're not sure if this is a new method of bullying, but the weirdness of it all is killing you a bit. You're about to dismiss yourself when she speaks up after her apparent evaluation of you.
"You would've been a problem for me had you been in any other house. Thank goodness the academy placed you with those other... creatures." Your brows furrowed. The grip on your basket tightens slightly and the arrogant smile on her face irks you enough that you have a clear sense of what kind of person she thinks she is.
"What do you mean by that?," you step up to her, immediately matching her hostility. She cowers a little, but not enough to actually take anything back. Instead, she doubles down on her previous comment.
"The auction next weekend." It's stated as a matter of fact, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"What about it?," you ask annoyed. The Frostheim girl scoffs before rolling her eyes.
"The girl with the highest bidding gets a prize. You're quite popular on campus. It would've been an issue, but you're in Obscurary," she grins. "Which means, you won't be participating."
"Okay? Do you want a reward or what?" You just want this conversation to end and get home.
"I'm simply saying that the people from there shouldn't mingle with human activities. It's only natural, and it's something that Darkwick agrees on too."
Okay, ouch.
You as well as your dorm mates are well aware of how the academy has secluded you all, but it's something you don't touch upon. Not even Ed, and he's quite blunt about many things.
Unfortunately, she keeps going.
"No one there is human, so why even bother trying with a date auction? Let's be honest with ourselves, who would date a monster?"
Monster.
That one stings a bit, but not to cry. No, instead, it's enough to make your blood boil.
"By the way, I'm not calling you ugly, but-!" She lets out a sharp yelp when you flip your positions, this time her being the one pinned against the lipgloss display. You breathe in, trying to keep calm from doing something you're sure to regret. Well, slightly regret, if you're being honest.
"I don't care what the hell you call me," you say between gritted teeth, "but for you to speak on my housemates, all because you felt threatened by how I look beside you, over a stupid auction prize, is quite bothersome. You're being bidded on for a date, it's not a beauty pageant." You roughly place the lipgloss you were previously looking at back on the display, having abandoned the idea of buying makeup and just wanting to checkout and leave.
Once you're able to approach the cash register, Benkei notices your foul mood, but makes no comment on it. When you look away for a moment to get your money, he slides in a granola bar.

The week of the auction is quite rowdy. Darkwick finally announced the six ladies that would be participating, their faces displayed throughout the entire school. Each photo was unique, displaying their charms as best as they could in their shots; however, your eye can't help but twitch when you came across that Frostheim student's photos. It's clear she paid professionals for these. High quality and edited. Not to mention, her hair, makeup, and dress all being extravagant. You will admit, she does look quite beautiful.
It makes you sick to even believe you could think that.
'Out of sight, out of mind,' you think to yourself. Repeating this mantra in your head really helped you get through the first half of your day. Next thing you knew, it was noon and also your free period. You ran to Sho's food truck as quickly as you could. Thankfully, you were the first person to make it.
"So now you wanna visit me, huh?" Sho sends you a lazy grin.
"Sorry, Rui tends to pack my lunch, but I told him that I would eat here today." You smiled up at him. "What's the special today?"
He hands you a fresh to-go container. Upon opening the lid, your mouth waters.
"Decided to try something from Central America. They call them pupusas." He says. "They're corn tortillas stuffed with cheese and meat. I hand made them myself too."
"Wow Sho, you really like international cuisine." He smirks at your praise. The smell alone is making you drool. You carefully sit down on a bench near the truck and with your fork in hand, take a bite. The flavor instantly bursts in your mouth. It's just the right amount of consistency, not too chewy and not too hard. Everything compliments each other well and you truly think that this is Heaven itself. You take another bite, then another, and another. You don't really consider yourself a foodie, but ever since coming into Earth, you can't help appreciating the many different dishes you've come across.
Sho watches you enjoy his food, feeling satisfied with your reaction. He leaves you to your own devices once he sees students begin to walk towards the truck. You're sitting there, enjoying your moment of peace, when you hear a shrilling voice. You close your eyes, already feeling your mood sour.
"Hi Sho~," she says.
Of course she'd be here. The food truck isn't some lowkey thing, you just didn't expect Frostheim students to be interested. She looks as prettt as her photos that are around the school. You take note of her sweet perfume, and you almost want to ask where she bought it from; however, when she noticed that you were at the truck, she simply rolled her eyes.
"I wanted to know if I could put up some of my auction photos here. They have a QR code that directs people to my auction bio."
You don't say anything. Hell, you don't even look at Sho's face when she asked him. You simply kept eating your food, only this time, you're eating to leave. You don't stay to know his answer, already too pissed off at the fact that you even let her get to your head.
How do you shake off the very real fact that you as well as the people in your dorm are not human? It wouldn't have bothered you as much before, but after coming to Darkwick, it's as though your humanity determines your value to the institution. How useful you are until your natural instincts kick in...
Gosh, you really need to leave. You don't turn to say bye to Sho, simply waving your hand, hoping he'll catch on.

The rest of the days smush together into one big blur. From balancing classes to requests from the professors, you didn't realize how fast the weekend arrived. You're just happy that you can breathe again once auction weekend is over. You were sent on a mission that Thursday, but it was quick. The demon at that monastery was so annoying.
"The virginity of the nuns is quite delectable." It had told you, eating one of the newer, younger nuns on your second night. It was a hard fight, but you conquered. It's there that you learned how the monastery operated. The older nuns, scared of death, conjured a demon that would grant them immortality, so long as they provided him with the "proper" care he required. They revealed their true ages, all being over a century old. They were fast to fall on their knees once you had revealed your true identity, praying for mercy. How incredibly sickening it was to hear them apologize to you rather than the lives they sacrificed for their selfishness.
You had returned to Darkwick in the evening on the Saturday of the auction. Your luggage heavier than when you left, but it was over. Your bed was waiting for you and you bet that Rui had a delicious meal for you as well. You wouldn't even mind if Ed was in your bed, an occurrence that's been happening recently. Apparently your room is much more comfortable, though when you suggested to change rooms he said it was too much of a hassle. Hopefully he plays some asmr for your shared nap time. Maybe Lyca can join you both too, preferably in his werewolf form so you can all be warm-
"There you are!"
You were instantly pulled out of your thoughts. In front of you is the Inspector. She's wearing a lovely, black a-line dress. Her hair and makeup are done as well. She looks as though she's going to a gala. You smile at her, mood immediately lighting up by her presence alone.
"Look at you! You're quite lovely tonight." She blushes at your compliment, but she doesn't thank you. She doesn't have time to do so. Instead she grabs your hand and immediately beings to run to wherever she's going. You don't protest, you know she'll explain to you what's going on.
"Professor Moby has been looking for you! He thought you'd be back earlier from your mission, but I guess the monastery was quite far out. He asked me to wait at the station to take you."
"What's this about?," you ask. From her urgency, it seems pretty serious; however, the Inspector doesn't respond. Instead she takes a turn. You're greeted with a very intriguing sight.
Tents pulled up all around this area of the main courtyard. Students are running in and out of the tents, shouting for makeup and what not. You see the actual girls who are being auctioned off run to and from. You looked further down and see a stage. Then it clicks.
You're backstage at the auction.
You look at the Inspector, silently asking her why she dragged you here. Before she can answer, another voice joins.
"Here she is!" The person wraps their arms around you. You recognize the vanilla perfume.
"Jo?" You turn to look at her. She's also in a dress that's quite similar to the Inspector's. "What are you doing here?"
Jo gives you a teasing look.
"The cutie didn't tell you? You're gonna be in the auction. She asked if I could help you with your styling."

"Huh?!"
"It was a last minute decision!," the Inspector hurriedly spits out. "Apparently Ed had spoken to the Chancellor about Obscurary's participation and he vouched for you."
She looks apologetic. You can only sigh. You really need to stop giving that geezer the benefit of the doubt. Without having much of a choice, you nod. You'll bug him later about this. You can only pray that he'll give you a direct answer.
"Just tell me what I need to do."
You're then dragged away into an empty tent, mentally preparing yourself for the night you're about to have.

If you had another category that was even lower, Jin would be the only name on it.
The moment Tohma escorted you to the Frostheim Captain's room, you knew he was going to give you so much crap for your list. You truly felt for the Inspector in that moment, recalling the times she shared with you about being called into Jin's room. It shocks you that he would even care about something as mundane (and to be honest with yourself, quite immature) as a dateability rating, but you guess it's his ego that's hurt. Now that is fascinating to you.
As far as you were aware, Jin had no interest in anything. He spent his days smoking and locked in his room. He didn't even care about you, having given you a nasty look when you had once arrived on the Inspector's behalf to drop off some documents. You couldn't deny that he was handsome, his physique being nice too. And you suppose having that much money sounds nice for anyone who wants to live comfortably.
Unfortunately for him, you're from a place where almost everyone is ethereal and money is the root of evil. You weren't impressed. Not even the slightest; and his personality was atrocious.
Regardless of what you thought, you still spent the rest of the day doing Jin's housework, wearing a maid outfit while doing so. Was it for his entertainment or your humiliation, you're not very clear on that. Possibly both. At least the outfit wasn't short, it was actually long and modest.
Your day was simply ridiculous.
You don't know if it was his own clothing or he ordered someone to accumulate as much dirty laundry as possible, but your hands were akin to raisins. What do you mean the laundry room was out of order? In Frostheim? You'd believe it if it was any other dorm, but the house with the rich kids? Then after hours of scrubbing clothes on the washboard, Jin made you clean his room from top to bottom. From the window sills to the door's hinges. On top of that, he had Tohma run an inspection to see if everything was clean. The monocle-wearing bastard went around with a white glove and started to swipe at everything. You should've just left, but you had a feeling that Jin would've used his sword to warp you right back into his cold chambers. Or maybe he would've sent Tohma after you. Thinking about any of the two scenarios gave you a headache.
"Remember this next time you have funny thoughts." The Captain told you, dismissing you with a flick of his wrist.
'What a jerk!', you thought immediately after leaving the ice castle. Your body was so incredibly sore; and you still had on the stupid costume, too tired to change back into uniform. Tohma was kind enough to put your clothes in a bag for you to take. Key word: enough, he still had that condescending smile when you were walking out.
You don't recall ever being put through the wringer in heaven. At least you can say that cleaning with Rui did have its benefits, you passed your inspections on the first swipes. Noticing it was now past noon, you decided to go eat lunch, head back to your dormitory, and just rot in there until tomorrow. Maybe then you'll have better luck finding Leo.
You figured that the cafeteria would be too crowded at this time, and you're definitely not about to show up at Sho's truck with your current attire. The only other place is the school store (and yes, you're aware of the Mystery Diner, but you're definitely NOT eating the food there), so you suck up all the remaining energy that you can conjure and begin your walk. On your way to the store, you figured the reason as to why there's a school like Darkwick, and it's because people can't mind their own business. Has no one ever seen a maid before?
You put a little pep in your step, too eager to buy your food quickly and then to the sanctuary of your room. Upon arriving, you thank everything in the universe when you realize it's empty. You greet Benkei, who's brows immediately shoot up towards the ceiling. He quickly spits out a greeting, his words stumbling on top of each other. You set your gaze on the food aisle.
Looking at your options, you're a little conflicted on what to actually buy. Usually, you eat at the dorm most of the time thanks to Rui; and every once in a while you'll show up to Sho's truck when he texts both you and the Honor Student to try out a new dish he wants to incorporate into his menu. You let out a sigh, pulling out your phone to send a quick message to your friend on recommendations. You're in the middle of typing when the bell chimes, signaling another customer has entered the store. You don't pay it any mind, reading over your message for any grammar mistakes.
"Oh... it's you," says the newcomer. You whip your head up, finger hovering over the send button, only to be met with Ren's judgmental face.
The universe was actually not on your side today.
"Hi Ren...," you replied awkwardly. He looks at you, then at your getup. A smirk spreads through his face.
"I'm starting to think that you might be into more kinks than what your list leads on," he snickers. Your tongue clicks in annoyance. How you miss the days when he wouldn't speak to you.
"I didn't willingly wear this, you asshat," you huff out. "If you don't mind, I'm trying to choose what to eat for lunch." At your response, Ren's eyes scanned the shelf you're in front of, his face twists into one of disgust.
"None of those," he says quickly. "The rice is dry as hell and the rest of it always lacks seasoning." He gestures to the shelf over. "These are the ones you want to consider." He picks up one of the pre-made lunch platters and hands it to you. You're quite delighted in how much better it looks than the options you had in mind previously. You're about to thank him when your list quickly comes to your mind again.
"Uh, Ren?" Ren lets out an exasperated sigh, and you figured it's because he has to talk for longer than he wants to. Too bad, he should've kept his mouth shut about your costume. "I do want to ask, are you not freaked out or offended by my list? You're awfully too casual about it if I have to be honest..." That's putting it lightly too, especially if he has the gall to openly kink shame you (which mind you, everything you've been through today has been against your will).
"As weird as it was, I would've been more freaked out if you had put me in the dreamboat category," he tells you. "No offense, but you draw in way too much attention for my liking." There's no hesitation in his response. It's curt and straightforward. It's as honest as he can be and you laugh. You don't notice his ears tinting red at the sound.
Finally thanking him for the recommendation, you're about to bid him goodbye when the door loudly slams open. Haru is panting at the entryway. Benkei scolds him for his sudden outburst, but Haru ignores it, immediately going straight to Ren.
"There you are! I can't believe you were able to uninstall the app..." he says. "It's fine! Come on, we have to go care for the animals!" It's then that the Jabberwock captain finally notices you, specifically your getup.
"Woah!" He pushes Ren out of the way to take a closer look at you. "Not bad! You look very cute!" He then pauses for a moment, almost as if remembering something.
"Actually, now that you're here, do you think you can come with us too? One of the animals doesn't look too good, but I don't want to call in a vet if it's nothing. Plus it'll give you the chance to see me work even harder!"
You want to smack Haru for that last bit, but you agree nonetheless.

After sending Ren away to do some work at another enclosure, Haru takes you to the animal in question.
A flying bison.
Your eyes light up. Your cuteness aggression suddenly becomes too much and you want to so badly squeeze the gentle beast, but you remain calm and let your companion explain.
"Yogi was brought in last week, but he's not interacting with the other animals. He mostly spends his days away from them and lays in the grass. He also eats the other animals' food."
You hum, inspecting the bison. Haru told you he was non-aggressive, open to human touch. You gently place your hand in front of his nose, letting Yogi sniff you. After a couple of seconds, he bumps your hand with his nose. He's beautiful, his coat is clean and the colossal size of him lets you know he isn't exactly malnourished. You thank Yogi for trusting you before laying both hands on his head.
Haru hears you sing lowly, softly, in a language he can't comprehend or figure out. He guesses it's something from when you were in heaven, forbidden to human ears. The moment between you and the bison feels private, and he wonders if he should leave to help you focus better. After watching you assess the bison, you emerge from your chant. You smile at Haru.
"Good news, Yogi is not sick."
Haru cheers, thanking you.
"But there's one more thing." He stops his celebration, sudden dread filling him.
"Yogi is a she. She's also expecting a baby."
Haru gawks at your revelation.
"You need a separate enclosure for her. She's protective of her womb, which is why she's not interacting with the other animals. It also explains her big appetite." You softly brush her fur. "If I had to estimate, she'll probably give birth by the end of this month."
"Gyahaha! I didn't expect that! I was so scared!," he pats your head. "Thank you so much, seriously. I'll see if I can talk to Mio about an enclosure for her."
"No problem. I'm happy I was able to help you save money." At your teasing, he grins. You continue. "Oh! You should also call Mortkranken. I know they're huge on this kind of thing. There aren't many flying bison, so they can definitely help you once Yogi goes into labor. They can also help evaluate her and the baby's health-"
"Hey."
He stops your rambling, his hand warm on your shoulder.
"I dragged you here for another thing as well. I wanted to talk about the situation with your list." Then suddenly you remember your current predicament.
"I think you're pretty and you've always been such a help to me and the animal, but...," he smiles at you, voice kind and polite. "I'm not into you. I'm sorry." He bows. It takes you a couple of seconds to realize what he was doing.
He's rejecting you.
You burst out into a fit of laughter.
Haru stands up straight, confused. Maybe you snapped?
"Uhm... you ok?," he asks, worried about your sudden outburst. Your laughter is uncontrollable, and you try to catch your breath, but it's really too much.
"You! Oh my! Pfft!," is the only thing you can manage to get out. Haru is patient with you though, and lets you ride out your laughing fit. Once you've calmed down, you wipe the tears that fell and finally are you able to talk to him.
"I wasn't into you Haru, it's just a dateability ranking list. Nothing romantic about it. I apologize for the misunderstanding."
He looks surprised, but then relieved. "Phew! That's good! I'm too busy to actually consider dating someone, so I'm glad it wasn't like that!"
Haru then offers to take you back to their dorm for something to drink. As you're both walking, you hear running from behind you, turning around, you see it's none other than Towa.
"~~~! ~~~~~!," he hums out. Haru yells at him to slow down, but Towa is his own person. The moment he gets close to you, he picks you up and spins you around. Haru can only watch as you're lifted into the air.
"Hi Towa!" You reply cheerfully. He beams up at you and gently puts you down. He pulls out his phone, and shows you your dreaded list. You wish you can burn your eyes for the amount of times it's been shown/mentioned to you today. Looking up at him, you see him pout. You can almost hear his voice.
"My Brugmansia! You don't think I'm romantic?"
You smile at him.
"It's not something to take seriously Towa. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings."
Towa keeps pouting at you, so you do the only thing you can. Looking at the groud, you spotted your target. You gently pull out the small dandelion and offer it to him.
"Can you forgive me, Towa?" You stand there for a couple of seconds, before he leans down and takes it into his mouth. You feed him the rest of the dandelion and pat his head once he finishes it. Towa smiles at you, and you take that as an accepted apology. You can't help but let your heart swoon at how cute he's being.
Suddenly, Towa leans down again and hugs you tightly, nuzzling his head against your own. You can smell the faint scent of flowers on him, and you figured he might've been laying amongst them for a while. Being held in his arms felt nice. You're not sure how to explain it, but he melted away some of the worries that you felt. Then Towa pulls out a small daisy and hands it to you. You're unsure of where he hid it, but you thank him nonetheless, placing it in your hair.
"~~~~~♪" Is all he says, but you can hear him clearly.
"I love you, my Brugmansia."
Haru had gone back to the Jabberwock dormitory long ago, so Towa locks your hands together and walks you towards it.

i did consider making the angel into an oc, but because i didn't have a solid idea, i decided to just make her into the reader. i think it worked out better too because (for anyone interested in theology/catholicism) angels aren't supposed to share their identity as it comes second to their mission. you can envision the angel however you'd like and she'll work out.
i'm really happy that everyone likes how i'm writing her. she's very dear to me and i mostly came up with her concept because the mc of tkdb lacked a girl friend and i think having that kind of connection would make her situation a little more tolerable. everyone deserves a good friend 🤍🤍

You decide to skip your classes entirely, absolutely hellbent on finding Leo and having him explain to you how exactly he got ahold of your list. Maybe there's a chance that he stumbled across it, though you knew that scenario was just simply impossible. You kept it meticulously hidden in your bag, and you always kept your bag on you or in your room at your dorm. It's also a bit hard to navigate the forest in Obscurary because of how dark and dense it is. Leo's stigma could be helpful, but it's not enough to make your way to the mansion unless you're the Inspector, a frequent visitor like Jiro, or the residents of the house. The possibility isn't completely at zero, but it doesn't make sense to you.
Now, the second scenario on the other hand, very likely. There's a chance that Leo used his stigma to eavesdrop while you were with the Honor Student at her dorm. He quietly stalked you two at a certain distance that wasn't too out of range for his stigma, but close enough that you still wouldn't be able to sense him. You were so certain that he wasn't nearby...
Maybe you should take up those sign language classes the school offers. Though you're pretty sure Mortkranken takes those courses for their deaf/hard of hearing patients.
Though, there was one thing you were absolutely sure of. The walk to campus was excruciatingly long and quiet. You felt your nerves flare up with every step, and it only got worse once you saw the light of campus peak through the trees of the forest.
Upon stepping foot on the grass, you felt like you were crossing a whole new world where you stuck out like a sore thumb. Walking through campus, you felt eyes on you as they whispered about your sinful list. When people so much as glanced at you, it felt as though they were leering, laughing at how much your list reveals about you; however, in reality it was just a regular day for the general admissions students. You were simply embarrassed by your predicament and your nerves were eating at you.
You've been in literal wars against demons, face to face with the first triad of angels, permanently expelled from heaven, but the idea of the entire school finding out about your list was somehow more frightening.
You continue the walk across campus, your next stop being the Vagastrom house, when you hear a faint screech from behind you. Initially you ignore it, but after a couple of seconds, your senses spiked up. Turning around, you see a figure that's slowly approaching you at a high pace. You squint to figure out what it is, and when the figure gets to a certain point, you recognize who it is.
"Kaito?"
The freckled boy lets out another screech.
"YOU HATE ME!!"
You don't have time to react properly. With how fast he was coming towards you, you should have definitely seen it coming. Within a few seconds, Kaito crashes into you, causing you both to fall harshly into the grass. He's on top of you, panting and catching his breath like he was in a marathon, tears falling dramatically down his face and on you.
"You... You hate me...," he sobs. "I got the notification from Leo and when I read it, my name wasn't even on there. I thought we were friends, Angel..."
Oh. Right.
With so many ghouls at the school, you were certain that you'd forget someone at some point. Unfortunately, Kaito is your victim.
"Listen, Kaito... The list is stupid anyways. I made it when I first got to the school and was losing my mind," you try to comfort him. You weren't doing a good job, though. "There were too many ghouls to remember. I had to pull out the copy of the yearbook we keep in Obscurary." You pat his head awkwardly, keeping in mind to keep your voice light. You felt bad. Really. It was something that you did in the wee hours of the morning, not thinking at all. As embarrassing as it is to have your business outed, you knew there would be consequences had anyone other than the Inspector seen your list. Katio's reaction to being forgotten is one of those consequences.
You speak to him again. "I don't actually think of anyone romantically. The list was just for my own personal entertainment."
He had finally caught his breath, its shaky and he's hiccuping, but he caught it. His tears are still fresh, but they're no longer falling onto your face and clothes.
"Well, where would've you put me?"
If music were playing from Rui's record player, the record would've suddenly stopped. Kaito looks at you, waiting for you, and you can only gulp as you try to think of a way to change the topic and not tell him that he would've been in the second or possibly the third category. Unfortunately, you find yourself stuck, no matter how much you think.
You're about to answer him when he suddenly gets picked up off of you. You had totally forgotten that Kaito had crashed onto you.
"Kaito, you shouldn't be on top of a lady like that." Luca had scolded him. He immediately held a hand out, helping you to stand. You thank Luca.
"Dude! We were in the middle of something important!"
"But as gentlemen, we should be aware of where and how we have these discussions." He says to Kaito immediately. Then he turns to you, "Though, I would presume that this discussion has to do with that list of yours?"
You let out an obnoxious groan.
"Please don't say anything," you cringe. "I'm literally so embarrassed. I'm sorry if I offended you in anyway." And then he smiles at you. Actually.
"No, you didn't. In fact, I felt honored being so high up on your list. I'm glad that I can give you a sense of security. At least we know that if we were to ever pursue something romantically-"
"Enough!" Kaito jumps in between you two.

After a bit of chatter with the duo, you received information that Leo was not in Vagastrom and instead, near Sho's foodtruck. Saying your goodbyes to the Chaos Combo (and successfully avoiding Kaito's questions about his ranking), you make your way over to the truck.
That's when your phone begins to ring.
You let out a groan and look at it, just in case it was anything important; however, the caller ID made you want to go to hell if that were an option.
What could Tohma want at this moment?
You decide to just ignore it, shoving your phone back into your pocket and continuing your walk to the truck. Then once again, your phone rings.
Again, you shove and ignore.
Then it rings for the third time. This time, you silence your phone. You're about to put your phone back into your pocket when you feel a hand on your shoulder. You stiffen at the suddenness. You're turned around to face the person and you held back everything that threatened to come out.
His infamous monocle glints in the sun. His condescending smile makes your skin itch.
"It seems that my phone calls aren't going through. Unless of course, you're purposely ignoring me?"
"Tohma, while I would love to entertain you," you say sarcastically. "I have something extremely urgent to take care of right now." You're about to shove his hand off your shoulder when he takes ahold of it in his own.
"I assume that it's about that interesting list you had made." He says back, just as sarcastically as you had been earlier.
"What? Do you want an apology or something?" You try to take your hands out of his grip, but he keeps a tight hold on them. It's not a grip that hurts, but it's enough to let you know that he's not going to make this easy for you.
"No. To be honest, the list was very amusing. I would even say that you're assessments of everyone is accurate, your personal relationship with your housemates aside."
He lets go of your hands then. You're about to ask him what he wants from you when he suddenly cups both sides of your face.
What is it with these ghouls touching everyone?
"While others may have some issues about it, I'm actually pleased that you're not as trusting. Maybe it's your many, many years of human experience, but I must admit that I feel quite comfortable in your presence."
He stares at you for longer. You're starting to think that maybe he has a screw loose somewhere in his head, but as far as you know, Tohma is running Frostheim. He can't risk losing his cool.
"To be honest," he says softly. "You're quite beautiful to look at." He then smiles at you. A genuine one. And you think that he actually looks more handsome when he's relaxed. Tohma finally lets go of you. "You're not as tense as you were before."
That was a pretty weird thing to say. Whatever, you thought. You think he's done. You seem to forget that Tohma is still himself.
"Good. I came here because the Captain has requested to speak to you. In his room. Alone." He smirks. "He's very curious about that list of yours."
You gulp.
"I actually have something to do right now-"
"The first year at Vagastrom is not at the food truck. He left while we were chatting. Since you have the time now, I'll escort you to our house."
Tohma has been demoted to 'Its not even a concept to me'. Jin remains in the same category. Kaito is ranked last in 'Me, if i was sixteen and in my rebellious era'. Luca remains in the same category.

The air had shifted in your dorm, and you felt it the moment you woke up.
It was strangely quiet.
While you're used to the dorm being tranquil most of the time, you felt a bit unnerved by how it was too silent. Usually you'd be able to hear some music downstairs, coming from the record player you and Lyca had gifted Rui for his birthday. Other times you'd hear the aforementioned werewolf, shuffling around as he ran up and down the hall and the stairs because of something he forgot. Hell, even Ed was audible thanks to how loudly he plays his videos.
Yet, none of those elements in your daily life were present. It was just you and your thoughts. As weird as it was, you decided to just brush it off. You shot a quick glance at your clock, noting how you had awoken half an hour later than your usual time. You had to get ready for class. Throwing the covers off of you, you head straight to your bathroom.
Quickly running through your routine, you gather your bag before sprinting down the stairs. In the dining room, you're immediately greeted with your Vice-Captain. He's carefully setting down a couple of plates onto the table, not having noticed you.
"Good morning, Rui." You announce yourself. Your eyes immediately scan the table spread, mouth watering upon realizing that majority of the plates were your favorite breakfast foods. You glance at the cook, "What's gotten into you?" He lets out a big grin at your reaction.
"Good morning, Angel. I barely slept, so I got to work on breakfast early. I hope you like it," he winks at you. You nod, and set aside your school bag so you could have a seat. Rui quickly settles behind your chair and pulls it out for you.
"I'll serve you, Dear."
You raise a brow at the pet name, but don't comment. Rui's always been a flirt. You're just thankful that you won't have to settle for a granola bar from the school store. You accept his gentlemanly gesture and let him push your chair in.
Carefully, he serves you a little bit of everything on your plate, cautious to not touch you at all. Grateful to him, you reach out for the silverware to get started. Rui sits opposite of you, grabbing his own plate before eating. You're having idle chatter between you two, enjoying this peaceful moment.
It's then that Lyca sprints down the stairs and into the dining room. "Smells good," he says. He takes the seat next to you. Rui stands from the table to go get a plate for him, that's when Lyca slides over a drawing for you to see.
"Oh! It's Shiraito Waterfall! You must've really liked our trip to Karuizawa, Lyca."
"It's for you," he says straightforwardly, "you liked the waterfall a lot. I drew it for you." You stare at him with a look of surprise. Careful with the paper, you take a proper look at his creation. Its colors are vibrant and very reminiscent of the original view. You can envision yourself back in Karuizawa, worry-free and normal. You're touched by the werewolf.
"Thank you so much. I'll find a frame for it later-"
"Hey! No fair!"
You didn't hear Rui walk back into the dining room, but he sees the drawing in your hands and immediately begins to complain.
"You can't just woo her when I made her favorites! That's cheating!"
Lyca scoffs, "I'm gonna be busy later. Giving it to her now was better for me."
You cock your head at their extremely interesting conversation. They have a game going on, and for some reason, you're the prize.
"Uhm, that the hell are you two talking about?" You ask, annoyed that this breakfast and drawing, albeit touching, was all for some brownie points.
You felt a sudden chill go down your spine, one that told you evil was lurking. You're about to turn around when Ed decides to sit down on your other side. He hands out a rose to you.
"You see, Little Bird, we're currently involved in a competition of sorts. We want to see if you'd change any of our titles based on how well we'd treat you." He places the rose behind your ear. "I must say, I'm a truly hurt that you think of me so badly. I'm quite harmless, not the perverted, old freak that you believe me to be."
"Well as her househusband, I would disagree." Rui stated, gesturing towards the table full of food.
"Well, I didn't use your makeup for my drawing this time."
It's then that you ask.
"Where did you hear this from?"
The room grew colder. Lyca almost lets out an instinctual whine.
You doubt they'd snoop through your things, and you're certain that the Inspector wouldn't just outright gossip about you. So as calmly as you can, you decide to get to the bottom of how they know about your ghoul ranking list. Besides, depending on the culprit, you might not actually have to hurt anyone-
"That first year from Vagastrom sent it out to all the ghouls." Rui says. He pulled out his phone to show you. "I think his name was Leo."
You glance at the screen. Staring right at you, mocking you, is your list with the detailed notes you had made on it. Without a word, you silently rise from the table.
"W-Where are you going?" Your Vice-Captain asked nervously.
You smile at him.
"To get rid of a pest."
Rui has been demoted to 'It's not even a concept to me'. Lyca and Ed remain in the same category.

synopsis: the one where yuri and jiro ask you to stop curing their patients with your stigma

It wasn't like it was your fault. It was actually Kaito and his big, fat mouth. And to be fair, you also had no idea that he was blabbing to people about your stigma.
This was huge for the campus. Students acted as if a miracle had occurred. You can only hope that they'd act like this once a cure for the Honor Student and Rui were found.
Your stigma heals.
This wasn't anything new actually. People knew that your stigma could cleanse. They just weren't aware that it also applied to things like the inconvenient, common cold and not just demons trying to take your soul.
The first time you cured someone, it was actually the aforementioned boy.
You had joined him and Luca at the diner, the Honor Student having gone on a mission earlier, therefore she couldn't join you. Kaito hadn't looked so good. He was paler than usual and he looked about ready to pass out right on the booth.
Luca urged him to visit Mortkranken for a check up and medicine, but the freckled boy was quick to resist. Slightly more annoyed than concerned about his complaints of being in 'agonizing pain' (his own words), you offered to cure him yourself.
"Do you have a favorite song? It doesn't matter really, but I like hearing my favorite songs when I don't feel good."
Kaito is quick to answer. You motion for him to give you his hand. He starts to blabber nonsense and getting all blushy, but you simply ignore him and take his hand anyway. You sing the song up until the first chorus is done. Almost immediately, Kaito's skin had looked better.
"That's amazing! I don't feel nauseous anymore!"
"Well yeah, I have divine powers and all," you responded nonchalantly.
Thus, your medical career begins.
Well, your quack doctor career.
It had only been three weeks, but every day you had students stopping you in the hallways, during your lunch break, or even coming back from missions to help them cure something.
"My period cramps are killing me."
"I sprained my wrist."
"I've been sick for some days and I'm tired."
And all they had to do was request a song for you to sing.
It wasn't like you purposefully intended to lessen the workload at Mortkranken, but pretty quickly, Jiro had caught on that the number of patients had started to decreased. What's more? Their current patients who had more serious health conditions suddenly began to miss their appointments.
Yuri, none the wiser, began to believe that Darkwick General was stealing patients. So imagine his surprise when Professor Nicholas is having the same problem.
"Some of our more serious patients told us that they found another doctor. We thought it was Mortkranken."
After further discussion of missing patients, there was only one possible explanation.
"There's a possibility of a medical anomaly on campus."
"But where did it come from?"
"I descended from heaven. They didn't just throw me on Earth, Rui."
Currently, you were helping Rui clean the dorm. He had thrown a little pick up line to lighten your mood, but it only served to annoy you even further. The reason? Lyca had bailed out on cleaning day. Again. And your oh-so-frail captain was definitely not going to offer his own help. You were on top of the ladder, dusting the shelves that have definitely seen better days when Rui had asked if you got hurt when you fell from heaven. You had to politely explain that only fallen angels are thrown out, not ones such as yourself who were put on Earth as a teaching-moment-turned-into-permanent-banishment. Your conversation gets cut short when the doorbell of the dormitory rings. You both look at each other, not accustomed to getting visitors unless told beforehand.
Rui goes to open the door, leaving you to your own devices.
It hasn't even been a couple of seconds when you hear a commotion from downstairs.
"Where is that insolent minx?!"
Your brows shoot up at the choice of words. You pay no mind though, seeing as it most likely had nothing to do with you. You then hear thunderous footsteps up the stairs and Rui's own protesting voice. You start to wonder if Edward had somehow pissed someone off. You suppose that's possible. Sometimes you hear him go out at night and not tell anyone of his whereabouts-
"You!"
Your thoughts are cut short at the screeching voice. Turning your head towards the person, you're surprised to see the Mortkranken ghouls. Yuri's face is flushed red with anger, and you think he looks kind of cute. He almost reminds you of a hamster. Next to him, Jiro looks... you don't know how he looks. He's always so stoic, never really showing emotions. Well actually, there was that one time you made an off-handed comment about corpses and he laughed at it. So maybe he's not as stoic-
"Are you listening to me?! I demand you to get down here!"
You blinked once, then twice. You looked around to see if any of your other dorm mates were in the vicinity. Confirming that it's only you and Rui, you looked back at Yuri, and slowly pointed at yourself.
"Yes, you! You're the only one who's on higher ground!"
You sigh, begrudgingly climbing down the ladder at his request. You were genuinely entering flow state cleaning the shelves too. You guess you'll get back at it in a bit. You're almost at the bottom when you miss a step. You feel yourself beginning to fall back, but Jiro was fast and quickly settled behind you. He helped you balance yourself on the ladder, and then opted to hold it for you while you climbed down.
"Thank you, Jiro," you said, hopping down from the last step. You then turn towards Yuri.
"Dr. Yuri Isami, to what do I owe to be blessed by your presence-"
"Don't play coy with me! Do you have any idea how much trouble you've been causing lately?!"
Your shoulders slump. It's clear that flattery will not help you. You should know that this kind of thing only works if it's Rui or Haku. Speaking of your dorm mate, you looked to him to see if he has any clue as to what Yuri is here for, but he looks as confused as you. You sheepishly smile at your vice-captain, silently apologizing to him for suddenly having to ditch cleaning day. He only sighs.
"I guess a break is okay. You can talk at the bar, I'll prep some tea for you guys."

"We don't want to cut more into your time. And frankly, we don't want to cut into our time either." Jiro, blunt as always, immediately cut to the chase once the three of you had settled into the bar. You're pouring his cup of tea when he says this, Yuri having declined your offer of pouring for him.
"Well I'm glad you're both considerate of our schedule. If I may ask, why are you two here?" You began to pour your own cup when Yuri scoffs at you. It's as if he couldn't believe your audacity to ask. You'd be lying if you said all of this build up was pissing you off, but you kept your composure.
"Isn't it obvious? There's been a series of medical malpractice cases going on, and it's came to our attention that it's your doing."
"Medical malpractice? Yuri, I don't mean to annoy you even more, but I have never performed surgery or anything of the sort on anyone." Yuri's glare turns fierce, his face getting redder by the second. It's then that Jiro speaks up.
"You've been curing students with your stigma. We'd like to ask you to please stop."
There's some seconds of silence between the three of you before you suddenly turn to Yuri, absolutely baffled at his audacity.
"That is not medical malpractice!"
"It is if you're not a doctor!"
"I'm literally a divine being!"
"Just stop using your stigma!"
You sit back and let out a breath of air. A laugh leaves you at the ridiculousness of this confrontation from Mortkranken. It's not condescending, but you can't help but find it funny. You shake your head, pulling yourself together before Yuri decides to blow a gasket at your dormitory.
"Look, I didn't intend for it to go this far. I was just helping students who had colds and allergies and stuff. Besides, I can only really cure on the surface level. I can't actually help with more serious illnesses or curses. That's something only a being of even higher authority can do."
"Yes, I thought that was the case. A lot of students with more serious sicknesses came back after leaving ours' and Darkwick General's care," said Jiro. "I remember you mentioning there being a hierarchy among angels. You were a Power, correct?"
You nod, happy that he remembered that from past conversations. Yuri huffs.
"Still, it's a great insult to us when we're trying to help our patients. Many of them have already told me how much more successful you are." At his words, your head hangs a bit. Now you feel a bit guilty. From your talks with the Honor Student, it's clear that Yuri and Jiro work extremely hard, especially for the health of others. It's now hitting you just how unfair it must be to hear that kind of feedback. You're not human, and have abilities beyond that of a normal person and the average ghoul. Of course you'd have better luck helping someone with a cough.
"I really didn't mean for it to go that far, so I'm sorry for that. I'll stop using my stigma to cure-"
"If you wanted to practice medicine, you should've just came to me in the first place! Even I would take a novice like you under my wing."
Okay, now Yuri has really lost his mind. You were certain that both of them were interested in how exactly you cured people. If there's anyone who could figure out how to apply your abilities to their research, it was most likely the Mortkranken ghouls. Though they told you to stop using your stigma on students, you're sure it wouldn't be permanent until they ask you for help. For now, you suppose you should just get comfortable and listen to them.

The Honor Student was worried about you. It's been two weeks since you've missed your shared courses and when asking around, your peers have confirmed that you haven't been attending any of your classes. She badly wants to check on you at your dorm, but the academy has not been very lenient with her as of late. Being an inspector is not easy. Her only moment of rest was currently being spent with Kaito and Luca at the anomalous diner, both sharing the same thoughts as her about your lack of presence.
"I want to consider us close, but I don't know what she's thinking or feeling sometimes."
"Maybe she's sick?," chimed the british boy. "She did say that since she's corporeal, she experiences sickness now." Kaito nods, immediately agreeing with Luca.
It's not enough for the Honor Student. She sighs, eyes casting downward as she focuses on the individual specks on the booth's table. "I don't know Luca... I have a feeling that it might be more than a cold." Her eyes move to her watch. "I have about 40 minutes until my next class, I'm going to go visit her."
"We'll come," said Luca. "She's our friend too. Oh! Kaito was also talking about how much he missed seeing her beauty-"
"Dude!," the blond screeches. "You don't say that kind of stuff in public!" Kaito blushed furiously as his friend once again unknowingly embarrassed him, but the Honor Student doesn't mind. They miss you as much as she does. As the trio gets up to leave the diner, the Honor Student's phone rings. Looking at the name of the caller, she answers it.
"Hello?"
The guys can't make out what's being said and they don't have any clues on what's being discussed. The Honor Student only listens in silence, humming every few seconds and giving short answers. It's then that she immediately looks back at Luca before turning back to her call.
"Yes, he's with me."
A few more seconds pass before she responds once more.
"Right now?" she says bewilderingly.
Her brows furrowed in slight annoyance. She's about to protest against the person, but it seems that they're a step ahead. She listens carefully, brows going from annoyed to sad. Her shoulders sag, ultimately accepting whatever task has been assigned to her. She bids the caller a defeated 'Bye' before hanging up.
"It was Tohma. He wants Luca and I at Frostheim as soon as possible. There's an upcoming mission."
Luca is still for a moment before asking,
"What about Kaito?"
"He didn't mention him. Just you and I."
Luca frowns before turning to Kaito.
"I'm sorry that we have to leave you. Maybe I can talk to Ishibashi-san to have you join."
Kaito sighs. "It's fine. You know I'm not a big fan of missions."
Before Kaito can quickly bid them farewell (and before Luca can force him to come regardless of their upperclassman's orders), the Honor Student calls out to him.
"Can you go visit her in our stead then?"

Kaito wants to die right now. Unfortunately, he can't as he gave the Honor Student his word that he'd visit you. And even more terrifying, the last time he came to Obscuary, he wasn't alone. He feels like anything is going to come out and grab him at any moment. One thing is clear though, this is definitely not a general student friendly zone. He doesn't know of any sane person who'd come here willingly. Hell! He'd turn back if it wasn't for a girl! The freckled boy hears some bats squeaking in the distance and decides to speed up his walk just a tad bit.
The manor was only a few feet away and though he feels out of breath, the thought of finally seeing you makes him feel slightly upbeat. As Kaito reaches the gates of the dormitory, he sees another mop of blond hair from a distance.
Rui grunts as he wrestles with the weeds of the garden. His apron covered in dirt along with his gloves and gardening boots. There's an anomalous plant that tries to sneak up on him, but he quickly turns around and tames it with a spray bottle filled with a mysterious, glowing, neon green liquid.
"Down! I am not your meal!"
Kaito gathers his courage before calling out to him.
"M-Mizuki-senpai!"
Rui whips around when he hears his name, one brow going up in confusion.
"Hey... Uh, Fuji... Kaito, right?" Rui smiles softly at the boy. "You might wanna stay where you are. Don't wanna accidentally kill you! And this plant is hungry too."
Kaito freezes, immediately doing as told. Rui laughs at his obvious fear. He sprays the huge carnivorous plant a couple more times to settle it down before quickly throwing what looks like a whole, raw chicken. Kaito's eyes cannot bulge out anymore than they should. The carnivorous plant swallows it in one gulp, finally settling down in its original resting state. The blond man lets out a breath of relief before paying attention to the freckled boy.
"What brings you here—Oh! Is the Inspector here too?" Rui's eyes immediately go to search for her, but he frowns when he sees that she isn't there.
Kaito feels annoyed but he pushes his jealousy down.
"No, I'm actually here to visit Angel."
Angel... that's what you told everyone to call you. The freckled boy wants to badly know your name, but you've forbade it, claiming that it's really not important.
"It invites deception from other beings. If a demon were to impersonate me, you'd be in trouble."
You had said this during a lunch outing with the Frostheim duo and the Honor Student when you first came to the academy.
"There's also the whole hierarchy thing. It would implicate control over me, and I kinda like doing my own thing."
Rui looks stunned before he looks off to the side. Kaito can see his mood go down.
"She's not really accepting visitors at the moment...," the Vice-Captain sighs. "She won't talk to us. I tried to talk to her through her door but... It's useless. You should go back to your dorm."
Rui looks defeated. He feels like he's failing you as a friend. At the start of your isolation, he tried to talk to Ed about it, but the vampire simply said that they should just let you be. However, that was about a week and a half ago. He's about to offer an apology to Kaito when the boy speaks up.
"Still," he says serenely. "I want to go see her. I... I'm worried..."
Rui sighs at him. "Look, I get what you're saying, but she won't even talk. You should just go—"
"Rui, that's not how we should treat our guests."
Both men swiveled their heads to see Ed standing on the other side of the gate.
"I'll escort him up if you're too busy."
Rui looks like a fish out of water as he tries to say something. Ed merely ignores him, motioning for Kaito to follow him. The boy in question hesitates for a split second, but he nods in certainty. As he crosses the gate, he gives the vampire his gratitude. Before Ed leaves to escort him into the manor, he turns to Rui. There's an evident frown of frustration on Rui's face and he makes sure to voice it out. Ed tells Kaito to wait by a tree.
"That's a look I'm quite foreign of."
"There's no point, Ed," Rui huffed out.
The vampire only smiles at him. Not condescending. A genuine one.
"We don't match the criteria." At this, Rui's face shifts to a confused one.
"She is one of us. The students that live here cannot solve her crisis. The touch of a human heart is what she needs."
Rui's face changes from confused to realization. He looks towards Kaito, who seems ready to jump out of his own skin. The reaper sighs, but ultimately nods in agreement. The vampire is thankful. Ed makes light conversation with Kaito as he leads him into the manor and to your bedroom door. The boy is obviously scared, and though amusing, he can't tease him. Not now at least. 'Hopefully he'll bring you out of your rut', he thinks.

The freckled boy had tried to knock first. There wasn't an answer.
He tried again, and it's the same as before. Silence. Kaito can only stand solemnly outside of your door as he thinks on what to do. It's then that he hears the door across from your own open. Turning around, he's face to face with Lyca.
"She's not gonna open it." The werewolf says with his brute tone.
'Geez, thanks for letting me know...,' Kaito thinks sarcastically.
Lyca lets out a small grunt before speaking again.
"Hold on. She gave this to me to keep safe, but I don't feel comfortable entering her room, being a girl n' all. But I don't want that Gigolo or that Moth-eaten Casanova going in there with her." He produces a golden key from his pocket and hands it over to Kaito. Kaito is about to thank him when Lyca talks again.
"Can you give this to her too? Suba says it's important to eat together. She hasn't eaten meals with us at all. She never touches them either, and Suba says that you can't skip meals." He hands a carefully wrapped plate in Kaito's hands. It's still warm. Lyca gives him a nod and returns to his room, leaving the freckled boy to his own devices.
Kaito stands there for a few seconds and though his heart is pounding at the thought of entering a girl's room for the first time, he can't get distracted. With a deep breath, he calls out to you for the last time.
"I'm sorry for suddenly doing this, but I'm coming in."
He inserts the key, and with a quick twist, he unlocks your door. Kaito gently pushes against it and opens a sliver of your door, jumping a little at the creaking hinges. He doesn't see much, just flowing curtains and some furniture. He also doesn't hear you protest. He takes a deep breath, and then, he pushes your door and opens it completely.
He walks inside, gently closing the door behind him. It takes him a few seconds to get his eyes to adjust to the darkness of the room, but you're there, laying down in the center of the bed. Kaito also notices that your wings have sprouted out.
The feathers near the scapulars are pitch black, and as they continue downward, they fade into pure white. This is the first time that he's seen them, and they're huge. It's then that the boy notices the feathers that are scattered around your room. He put down the plate on a nearby dresser.
"Angel?"
You don't move. Worriedly, he hurries to your side. He almost jumps when he sees that you're actually awake. A single glance is enough to let anyone know that you haven't been taking care. Your eyes are a bit sunken. You look sick. Your eyes move from the window to Kaito.
"What are you doing here?" You don't sound upset when you ask him that.
"The Inspector sent me here to check on you..." At this, you smile. It looks sad.
"Of course she did... She's always so worried about everyone... every thing..." You turn your gaze back to the window.
"Angel... What's wrong?"
You don't answer his question. Instead, you tell him what you're thinking.
"The moon is quite beautiful tonight."
His brows furrowed in confusion. You keep talking.
"I've seen the moon countless of times, but it never stops being beautiful." Kaito turns to see it himself. It's a full moon.
"When I was in heaven, I always loved the moon. Even when I was punished, it was the one thing that remained consistent." Your eyes become glossy. "Ironic, isn't it? She's always changing, but she's still the moon."
A single tear threatens to spill, but Kaito is quick to wipe it. It catches him off guard, but he remains cool. He slowly takes a seat on your bed. You don't say anything, seemingly allowing him to do so.
"Granny used to scold me for crying with no reason." At this, you laugh weakly.
"I don't know if you'll be able to understand, Kaito."
"Maybe not, but it doesn't hurt to talk to a friend."
You don't say anything about that. He doesn't know if he crossed the line. It's not like you haven't hung out with him, but you've never hung out one on one. It's always with someone else. You greet him on campus when you see him, and he does the same, albeit in a 'please notice me!' manner. You've bumped into him several times when going to another class. You also sit next to each other for a shared class.
Kaito considers you a friend, but he's not sure if it's reciprocal and it's just you being nice because the Honor Student is friends with him. He's about to apologize when you suddenly take his hand.
"It's just... I'm free to do anything." At this, Kaito glances at you curiously. You continue. "I've lived among humans long enough to be one... but I'm not. What's the point of having all the knowledge on humanity when I'm not human myself..." You move to sit up. Your wings look even bigger than before. You take your free hand and run it down the edge of one.
"The moon will always be the moon regardless of its shape. I will never be human and I am no longer allowed back into heaven." You slip your hand out of his grasp and pull your knees up. You're sad. It's funny, you think. Not too long ago, you confidently told the Honor Student that you found a purpose. But you've yet to help her, and the Kyklos has made it clear that you're not going to find her. You've yet to help Rui, his reaper curse having the potential to kill you if you venture too far into it. The most you've done are the solo missions that the institute has given you. All demon related. All of them deceased.
"What's the point of me being here?"
Kaito stops breathing hearing that last part. You're definitely stronger than him. Definitely more useful than him, but right now, you remind him so much of himself. Your insecurities and your doubts are clear.
You're not sure if you're doing enough to stick around them.
He's suddenly angry. Not at you, but at fate for having the audacity to still punish you even after you've learned your lessons and acknowledged your mistakes.
"You're wrong." He glares at you. Kaito suddenly grabs you by the shoulders roughly and pushes you back. You're about to fight back against him when he suddenly shouts out.
"You aren't human, but you still have so much to show!"
You want to push him off. Kick him out of your room, but you can't. Not when he's crying for you. His tears fall right on your face, but Kaito is determined to get you to listen to him.
"Yes, the moon is still the moon. And you may not see it now, but now that you have your freedom, you can do so much more than what you could do in heaven."
He gets off of you and lays down next to you.
"You belong here, whether it's here at Darkwick or outside of it, you have a place here. You may not be like the moon, but I like this version of you. You're like a butterfly. The world is your oyster."
You reach over to clean the trail his tears have left. His breath hitches once he realizes your proximity, but he does nothing to help. Neither do you.
"G-Granny said you shouldn't worry about the 'what ifs' especially if they haven't happened..." he gulps, his confidence slipping away for every second that he lays next to you.
"Your granny is wise. I'm sorry for worrying you all." Suddenly you hug Kaito. Now he definitely thinks he's gonna die. "Thank you."
He can only nod, afraid that his voice will absolutely betray him. There's nothing being said between you two, but it's a comfortable silence. Your bed also feels great, better than his own bed back at his dorm. It's also a nice temperature, even with the open window. Kaito feels himself grow tired. He fights hard against his tiredness, but he's slowly losing the battle.
You let Kaito fall asleep on your bed as you get up and take your meal from your dresser.
It's still warm, so you gently open your door to ask Lyca if he'd like to eat together.
Before you leave, you decide to repay Kaito for bringing you out of your rut. In the slow closing of his eyes, you whisper it to him. It's quick, almost as if a small breeze had stopped by. He's not sure if he fell asleep too quick to dream it, but he knows that once he wakes up, he'll be too scared to ask in case you really hadn't said anything.

synopsis: the one where you talk about which ghouls you'd date and which ones you'd avoid
girl talk
it's pretty sunny on campus today, and because it's a nice day, you have plans with the Honor Student, Kaito, and Luca. well, you had plans with the three of them, but Kaito flunked yet another test, so Luca decided it'd be better if the Honor Student and you had a girls day while he helped Kaito study. you can definitely hear Kaito's cries, but that's something you can ignore.
currently you're on a bench at the quad, waiting for the Honor Student to finish her last class. she had about 10 minutes left when you started waiting, which you don't mind. you had borrowed a book from Ed's room, so it was the perfect opportunity to have a go at it. you're only a few pages towards the end when you hear a throat clear behind you. looking up, you see it's a peer from your last class. he looks nervous, his body language a bit stiff.
"h-hey! you, uh, dropped this..." he says awkwardly, holding out his hand. you look down at his palm to see it was your house's lapel pin. immediately, your hand flies up to your blazer and feel that there's indeed nothing there.
"oh crap, i was rushing this morning so i probably didn't secure it properly." you gently take your pin from him and go to put it on your blazer. after shaking it to check if it was secured, you smiled up at him. "thank you! my vice-captain would've chewed me out for sure if i lost it..."
"no problem!" he says. "i've actually wanted to speak to you for a while now. it's only been a month since you've been on campus, right?" you nod, a little saddened that you wouldn't be able to read your book or be left alone. 'i hope this isn't what i think it is', you thought. all hope immediately flies out the window once you hear what he says next.
"i couldn't help but notice how beautiful you are..." he looks at his feet, his face sporting a light blush. 'crap! it is!', you shout in your head.
"oh. thank you." you say too casually. "i suppose it's because i'm an angel. not to sound pretentious, most of us are quite beautiful. though, i don't know if you'd not be scared of an ophanim..."
you sounded very nonchalant and you were proud of it. you tried to add in something random to seem off putting as well, but your classmate simply laughs before plopping down beside you. you really hope that the Honor Student is a fast walker...
"maybe, but you really are beautiful. more than the girls here on campus." he leans in. "say, you're not seeing anyone are you-"
"sorry for the wait!" you let out a breath of relief once you see the Honor Student.
"you're fine." you say standing up. you turn towards your classmate. "sorry, i gotta go. thanks for my pin!" you wave back at him before joining your friend.
you're a good few meters away from the guy when she speaks up beside you.
"he seemed really close to you." you let out a groan.
"physically he was. i don't actually know his name if i'm being honest." you don't see the not-so-innocent smile forming on her face.
"he was gonna ask you out, wasn't he?" you let out another exaggerated groan. she simply giggles at your misery. "that's the fifth time this month."
you sigh. "it's been a long month, Miss Inspector. maybe Kamurai is onto something with all those cigarettes he smokes."
"i'm surprised you're popular on campus. i would've thought for sure that being in obscuary would've scared off the students."
"well to be fair, some of the girls are still willing to ask Rui out, and he can quite literally kill you on the spot."
"still, people are scared of Ed and Lyca. i would've thought for sure that you'd be there with them, no offense."
"none taken. and honestly? it's mostly due to perception. Ed is a murder suspect, so people would naturally be nervous about that. and Lyca is considered a 'monster' and once again, people get nervous. people hear angel and immediately associate it with good." the Honor Student nods, knowing that you're more likely to kill than Lyca is to think about the concept of killing someone. that's something she wouldn't say out loud though, especially when darkwick was extremely quick to take you in while they're still hesitant with the werewolf in question. while she hopes that things get better with him, she doubts the institution would be thrilled if they ever found out you were the one who killed the anomaly (and probably more) on the mission where you met.
"also, the only reason i'm popular is because of my face. if i was anything like the angels in the first triad, they wouldn't be so chirpy around me." the Honor Student laughs at your comment.
there's some seconds between you two as you walk to her dorm before she speaks up again.
"y'know, now i'm curious. what kind of guy would you date?" you look at her quizzically before smirking.
"why? you got a thing for me?" she gently shoves you.
"no. it's just that you've turned down guys that are pretty well known at school, so i'm curious if they weren't your type."
you think about what she said. while the guys that asked you out were pretty cute, you simply weren't interested. so you tell her exactly that. her next question almost makes you fall over on your face.
"would you date any of the ghouls?"
"did any of them put you up to this?"
"just answer!"
you quickly look around to check if there's any lingering ghouls (and with Leo, ears) before hurriedly pushing her away from campus and towards her dormitory.
"i'm not answering in public."
"so you have thought about it!"
"can we please hurry up?"

you pull out your notebook to present to the Honor Student and she looks at you like you've made a crazy, scientific discovery.
"i have them separated based on category, which! goes as follows: 'total dreamboat', 'me, if i was sixteen and in my rebellious era', and lastly, 'it's not even a concept to me'."
at this, the Honor Student can only stifle a laugh while you're looking at her very seriously.
"you asked! and now you have to sit through this as i explain." you point at the first name in the first category. Haku.
"first thing's first, he's extremely smooth." she nods. "he's also very handsome and very kind. though i will say, he is mysterious. there's something about him, but it's something i can overlook especially when he's a smooth talker."
next, Zenji.
"a man of romance. who wouldn't want to hear poetry that was written with pure devotion? and he's tall."
you point at the next name, Subaru.
"though a bit shy, i think there's something deeper hidden beneath. he has another side to him and i think his face is quite sexy looking. his beauty mark especially heightens that." the Honor Student simply shakes her head in amusement.
"so, the entirety of hotarubi are dreamboats?"
"yes. next person." you point. "Haru."
"what?!"
you nod, very sure about your decision.
"a man that works! men don't work hard anymore, but he does! and he's a funny man! and he takes care of his son!"
the next name makes you hesitate a bit, and when the Honor Student leans in to see it, her eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
"Rui?!"
"oh, sue me! he's very handsome! and he cooks! and cleans! perfect househusband material if i were to be honest."
she leans in again to see the next name and once again, she's shocked. she reads it out loud.
"'jo and also girl jo. at the same damn time, please and thank you.' uhmm, are you sure the demon pact is the sole reason you were kicked from heaven?"
you roll your eyes. flipping your notebook to see the next name, you immediately cringe.
"i know he's my friend, but Luca is so gentlemanly. who wouldn't fall for that? and he has money."
"that's pretty superficial of you..." you put your finger up to your lips to shush your friend. a grin appears on your face at the next ghoul.
"Yuri."
"WHAT?!"
"hear me out, would you?!" you sigh out. "i like the idea of breaking him. he looks like he cries pretty."
"ok, Big G definitely had more reasons to kick you-"
"enough with the kicking!" the Honor Student facepalms, not sure if she regrets asking you the initial question. though admittedly, she is quite entertained.
"and right under Yuri, we have Jiro. don't ask me why and definitely don't ask me how. just know i think he's in the sexy department." at this, she simply nods, not wanting to share with you that she also thinks Jiro is sexy.
and finally, the last two ghouls on the same line.
"how come Sho and Mio are in the same space?" she had asked. you're pretty straight forward with your answer.
"they both create things."
you move onto the next category. the list is smaller, but the Honor Student can read some of the names on there and she's very curious about your reasonings.
"tohma. he's shady but he's not all bad." next line. "alan." the Honor Student raises an eyebrow.
"why is he in the rebellious category?"
"he looks like someone my dad would tell me to stay away from." she lets out a small 'ahhhh' before proceeding to let you continue.
"ren is pessimistic and if i was still in heaven, the other angels would not like him. we were always doing something lively."
"imagine him in angel choir." a giggle leaves her mouth but you're in disagreement almost too quickly.
"don't even joke about that. those seraphim did not play about refinement." you quip. "especially Seraphiel," you shivered just thinking about the scoldings you've had to endure from your former choir conductor. professor dante has nothing on you.
"anyways, we've made it to the last category." you point at the first name that's the only one highlighted in a bright, neon yellow. "leo can stay the hell away from me."
"he's not all bad."
"no, but i want to keep my peace." next name.
"towa. he's cute, but i've never thought of him as more than a friend. though i will give him his flowers for being interested in romance. it's cute." and his way of viewing life is refreshing. you enjoy his company.
"next is the entirety of sinostra." the Honor Student lets out the biggest laugh since the start of your presentation. you let her have her moment before she calms down.
"you cannot pay me to go near that house. i'm into some things, not whatever dysfunctional family dynamic they have going on. Romeo is a yeller, Ritsu is a yapper, and Taiga is an 'i don't give a damn-er'.i'm not a masochist. next." you look very serious after sinostra, and absolutely disgusted once you get to the current ghoul in question.
"Ed is a freak. and not in a 'haha well duh, we're from obscuary. we all are.' kind of way. he's genuinely into some things that would scare even Taiga—actually no, he might match his freak. regardless! he's a perverted old man." you look at your notebook to see who's next. "and speaking of people who might match Ed's freak, Shion. my god, is his face pretty, but holy shit. even i'm scared of him. this freak trio is not going near me."
"wait a minute," the Honor Student leans in. "how come Lyca is in this category?"
"oh that's easy. he used the makeup that you gave me for his drawing the other day." basically, an older sister with an annoying (but endearing) younger brother. "something about his coloring pencils not having great pigment. can you believe that?" you sigh out, readying yourself for the next name.
"there's something wrong with Elias. he's too relaxed for someone who was punished because his entire house decided to desert. he knows things, and that's coming from me who knows more."
and finally,
"Jin needs to get his shit together." your friend immediately nods, fully understanding your frustrations. "you're seriously too patient. he's hot but his attitude... i don't think i can fix him. instead, i would be in therapy."
and with that, your presentation concludes. the Honor Student smiles before grabbing a pen and drawing a new chart on your notebook. you peak over and let out an amused laugh, ignoring the questionably loud bumping going on in your chest.

"these magazines are so ridiculous." you say amused. "choose your hair color based on your type of guy? men are superficial, they wouldn't see it more than just a color." the Honor Student lets out a giggle as she continues to flip through her own magazine. earlier, she had shyly asked if you could hangout with her at her dorm since you both finished class earlier and were free in the afternoon. being the only girl in her circle, you accepted. you found her quite endearing, immediately understanding why some of the other ghouls were fond of her. also, her dorm is men-free. an extremely nice contrast to your own dormitory.
you both hurriedly purchased some snacks and magazines to pass the time. she had considered renting a film, but you stopped her when you mentioned that Ed had a subscription for every streaming service that has ever existed.
it's only been a month since you were enrolled at darkwick and a month since you've known the Honor Student, having met on a mission she and some of the other ghouls were on for another anomaly. once it was over, she had asked you to come with her to the academy and enroll. considering that you quite literally had no where else to go and the anomaly in question was also something you were tracking down for years before defeating it, you easily accepted.
though, seeing how shady the academy and the institute is as a whole, you somewhat regret it. but that's something for you to keep to yourself.
"i don't know," she begins to say. "i think Ed would be able to look past it as more than a hair color." you snort.
"that's because my dear, extremely old captain is a vampire. whether it's his age or his powers, he knows how to get into your head."
she laughs. "like you have room to talk, you're just as, if not, older than him, no?"
"when i was with Big G, yes. but it's only been a couple of years since i've been on earth so technically i am younger than Ed in that sense." she looks at you, curiosity swirling around her eyes and you're very tempted to read her mind, but you need permission first. you suppose that's the downside of being an angel, so you simply wait for her to ask you instead.
"Big G... to think you used to be a being of higher power... do you regret it? do you miss heaven?"
you pause for a moment. there was a moment of silence between you two as you get your thoughts in check. she was ready to apologize in case it was something you didn't want to talk about, but you simply put your hand up and smiled. shutting your magazine, you lay comfortably on the floor. her ceiling wasn't in the best of conditions, but you see that she tried to make it work with the stickers littering across like a starry sky. she shuts her own magazine and climbs down her bed to join you on the floor.
"i do. sometimes."
"regret?"
"no. the missing part."
she stays silent.
"i was selfish back then... before i was banished, i mean. i had a high position, and was considered one of the best. i was praised for my voice and my skills. i was comfortable. i saw myself as too good to be worrying over humans, especially when most of the world's problems were caused by humans."
you were an angel far longer than you were a ghoul, not to mention, you spent longer time in the sky than on earth.
"the day i was banished, i felt my world literally collapse. i had lost everything. i wanted nothing to do with humans, and yet, i was punished by being sent to earth. everything i knew, gone in an instant. i thought it was ridiculous that human beings were more important than me. i still had that mindset once sent down here. i didn't care about human lives at all." she hums beside you.
"was there a way to go back into heaven?"
you let out an amused laugh.
"yeah, and it's something i realized way after i turned into a ghoul. but i was so frustrated at the time. i desperately wanted to go back that i was willing to do anything, including making a deal with a demon. that got me banished for good." you cringe just thinking about it. "i was definitely granted mercy though, as i still have my abilities and my wings. so in a way, not everything was taken."
you were still learning the ropes of humanity. living among them has changed your perspective quite a bit, and though you don't necessarily like every person, there are individuals like the Honor Student who stand out and have helped change your way of thinking.
"i learned my lesson the hard way. over time, i saw that humans are not all that bad. some pray to have something stable in their lives. they hold onto their beliefs because it helps them keep living. to keep going."
you look at her.
"i think that's why i took a liking towards you. you've been faced with so many difficulties, but you've refused to back down. you still believe that there's a way to cure your curse. had we met at the beginning stages of your curse, i would've been able to cure you no problem."
another pause. the silence around you isn't necessarily unpleasant, but it solidifies the ticking clock of her fate. maybe that's why you had agreed to hang out, because she needed—no, deserved—some peace every now and then.
"but i won't stop. i'll help you. so, no. i don't regret anything. because i realized that my calling was to help people near me."
a few seconds passed between you before she leans over and presses onto your side. you accept her affection, and you can't help but wonder how worried her family and friends must be. how long it's been since she's last seen them.
"even though you've been banished from heaven, you're still an angel through and through." she kisses your cheek. "thank you."

though, seeing how shady the academy and the institute is as a whole, you somewhat regret it. but that's something for you to keep to yourself.
"i don't know," she begins to say. "i think Ed would be able to look past it as more than a hair color." you snort.
"that's because my dear, extremely old captain is a vampire. whether it's his age or his powers, he knows how to get into your head."
she laughs. "like you have room to talk, you're just as, if not, older than him, no?"

you pause for a moment. there was a moment of silence between you two as you get your thoughts in check. she was ready to apologize in case it was something you didn't want to talk about, but you simply put your hand up and smiled. shutting your magazine, you lay comfortably on the floor. her ceiling wasn't in the best of conditions, but you see that she tried to make it work with the stickers littering across like a starry sky. she shuts her own magazine and climbs down her bed to join you on the floor.

"i was definitely granted mercy though, as i still have my abilities and my wings. so in a way, not everything was taken."
you were still learning the ropes of humanity. living among them has changed your perspective quite a bit, and though you don't necessarily like every person, there are individuals like the Honor Student who stand out and have helped change your way of thinking.
"i learned my lesson the hard way. over time, i saw that humans are not all that bad. some pray to have something stable in their lives. they hold onto their beliefs because it helps them keep living. to keep going."
you look at her.
"i think that's why i took a liking towards you. you've been faced with so many difficulties, but you've refused to back down. you still believe that there's a way to cure your curse. had we met at the beginning stages of your curse, i would've been able to cure you no problem."
another pause. the silence around you isn't necessarily unpleasant, but it solidifies the ticking clock of her fate. maybe that's why you had agreed to hang out, because she needed—no, deserved—some peace every now and then.

It doesn't seem like the most pressing of questions. You're on a limited time, Yunho doesn't take very long in the shower. But it's the only question that your tongue decides to articulate.
"I don't know." Comes his immediate response. No gap to even think of a lie. Truth wired in his shaky voice as he reaches and slowly cups your heated cheek. "I swore to God I'd never tell a soul..."
His touch, as always, is unfortunately comforting. Grounding.
"Promise me you won't tell him. Promise this slip-up is between us and next time we have some time alone, I'll answer any questions you have."
His eyes are the same ones that shone in the summer sun all those months ago when you met. Same ones that held empathy as he handed you a Plan B and a pair of pajamas after that morning which you have so much trouble remembering.
The words, like so many other things, happen without your permission.
