They’re soon back to their usual ways. Even so, as they continue to bite, snark, and even fight each other, they become a bit remorseful about it. After a conflict, both parties will quietly withdraw from each other. When they rejoin, they hesitate to speak on the matter or bring it up again. They are not apologising (yet).

They begin to ease up on each other. Prolonged fights don’t happen; one enemy hits the other for whatever reason, the other hits back, they scowl at each other, then they drop the matter. Discussions are the same; one party makes a scathing remark, the other responds with an equally scathing remark, then they drop it and it doesn’t devolve into a fight.

Another act of kindness occurs. One of them gives the other a sort of back-handed compliment. Not because they need it or the situation depends on the compliment; they just do it since they’re in a good mood.

The back-handed compliment from before is returned. This time, it’s not particularly jarring; it just feels a bit natural. The other party simply shrugs, hums, and goes about their business, which is very normal by now.

The attacks become simple soft slaps that go without retaliation. They are still intended to degrade and insult, though.

They start sharing supplies rather than going “Everyone for themselves.” Neither of them are kind about it; they just see the pooling of resources to be more efficient. At least neither of them suspects the other of waiting to steal stuff and run off anymore.

The small dialogues from before become full conversations where they talk in depth to each other about their worries and feelings, and how the other hurt them before when this all began. They apologise to each other.

One of the now friends gets the other a present out of nowhere. It’s food, like a treat rather than a charitable gift. It is appreciated.
