The last time I saw Earth.
Levi and his questions đ with a sound (follow me btw đ )
After Reiner returns to Marley a broken man, he tortures himself with the memory of you, wanting nothing more than to touch you again - would you even let him? - to the point that he swears even his skin aches for the need to feel yours, as if letting his body melt into yours would lift the burden of sadness and self hatred, like only you could clean away the tear- and booze-soaked haze he finds himself in so many nights. He tries imagining you're there with him, safe, forgiving, soft against him. Sometimes it helps him feel something for a few minutes; most times the pain is just more raw when he wonders if you even survived the battle at Shiganshina, much less if he'll ever see you again. And once or twice, when he's half numb from drinking, he even finds a girl whose hair looks just like yours, who's receptive to the advances of a grieving man, and in dim, cold rooms, he looks for solace in burying his face in her hair while pretending it's you underneath him, but it only leaves him feeling so much worse that he shies away from human touch entirely.

Reiner was taller now, even if it was hard to believe. Maybe not as tall as Bertholdt was, but taller. Not only that, but while he maintained some of the more prominent muscles in his figure, it was noticeable how much weight he had lost. His hair was slightly longer - maybe he didn't keep up with cutting it as much as before. But to be fair, the change wasn't necessarily drastic. Not like the amount of facial hair he let grow out, which was completely ridiculous but so on brand for him.
But what did you care?
Your gaze lingered on him a moment longer, practically having to force yourself to look away from the man you swore was dead to you. But he wasn't, was he? He was standing right there, talking to Connie and Jean like nothing happened. As if the night prior Jean didn't literally punch him. Did they all just forgive him suddenly? Traitors.
You sighed. Maybe you were being dramatic.
The only thing you wanted to hear now was the sound of the water swishing beneath the boat, maybe even a seagull. But it was like you couldn't drown out his voice. It hadn't changed. It was exactly as you'd remembered it being about four years ago. Though, back then you swore you'd found it charming.
Odiha. That's where you were going, what you were focusing on, in order to service the flying boat that would help you and your fellow scouts reach the Rumbling, you needed to reach Odiha. To stop Eren. So why was Reiner's presence bothering you so much?
Reiner was your best friend at one point. When you first joined the cadet corps, it was obvious you were nervous to anyone who took a second to look. And for that, most people didn't see you as a potential reliable comrade.
Most people.
Reiner liked you. He had once playfully claimed you made funny faces during sparring exercises and took you under his wing, seeing your potential. Back then, Reiner had a talent for making anyone feel seen. Even stubborn cadets like Annie seemed to at least tolerate him, maybe even respect him.
So how could you not fall in love with him?
It was ridiculous how quick it happened. You were sure there were other girls vying for his attention just like you were, but you swore Reiner gave you special treatment. It was stupid.
Reiner would see you entering the mess hall and instantly make sure there was a spot open at his table for you. Bertholdt had typically sat across from him, but most of the time there was a spot directly next to Reiner conveniently available just for you. He'd call you by your last name over to their table, always a smile on his face, always so damn sure of himself.
"Bread?" He had offered, causing you to shake your head with a nervous smile on your face. Nervous. Not nervous enough, apparently. But that didn't matterânot when Reiner was offering you bread, or to train after hours with you, or take you into Stohess one weekend when you mentioned wanting a change of scenery.
"I know you wanted that muffin," Reiner said regretfully as you walked away from the bakery stall at the food market. "Sorry I couldn't get it for you."
You shook your head, mouth full from the cookie he'd already got for you just ten minutes prior. "It's fine, really," you assured him, words slightly muffled from the pastry.
Reiner simply smiled at you, taking a bite of his own cookie.
When you returned to Trost that evening as the sun was just beginning to set, the teasing from your comrades was relentless.
"Woah!" Connie had exclaimed, realization dawning on his face as he looked at you and Reiner entering the mess hall together. "Where've you been all day?" He asked, nosy as ever even if the answer was plain as day.
"A date. Is that really such a foreign concept to you?" Reiner had teased, making Connie grin mischievously.
A date. You had your suspicions that that's what it was, but Reiner hadn't explicitly said it. Not until Connie asked. The straightforward explanation made your heart race, gaze dropping instantly to your shoes as Connie's laughter filled the space.
"So that's why you've been polishing your boots and actually combing your hair. I was wondering what the special occasion was," Jean had said to you, his brow raised and arms crossed in a way that was so distinctly Jean. Despite the words, you were sure it was his own way of approving.
"Oh, my God, is that a hickey?" Sasha suddenly butt in, moving into your personal space. Her hands held your head in place as she stared at the scrape from training on your forehead.
"HickeyâwhatâSasha, that's on my forehead!" You had defended, but it was too late. Multiple other cadets heard the word hickey and ran with it, causing a flurry of gossip surrounding you and Reiner. And Reiner didn't deny it. He just smiled at you, and somehow that made you feel better.
There were plenty of times he'd made you feel better. An embarrassing amount of times. A pathetic amount of times, considering what he might've been comforting you about.
You sniffled, attempting to straighten yourself out before dinner was served in the mess hall as you sat on a log on the outskirts of the training grounds, taking in the yellow and orange blend of sunset before you. Even with the view, your mind was elsewhere.
It hit you every now and then at random. Despite it happening almost five years ago, you had pushed the grief down as far as you could bury it when your family was killed during the breach of Wall Maria. You were so young when it happened, but suddenly you were alone. When the Armored had broken through the inner gate of the wall, your childhood home had been crushed by a stray boulder.
You were lucky. You came to terms with that at a young age. Far too lucky. It chipped away at you everyday since, even without you realizing. What made you so fortunate to have escaped? Avoided certain death like your family couldn't? What made that soldier step in and save you but not them?
The wondering was pointless, though. They died and you didn't. For some reason fate had kept you alive until now. And for that, you had to live with a purpose. Even if now that purpose was wiping your snotty nose and trying to compose yourself enough to go eat with your friends.
"Bread?"
You had looked up to see none other than Reiner holding out a small loaf, a second one for himself in his right hand. Hesitantly, you had taken it, using the moment Reiner sat down beside you to attempt to discreetly wipe at the tears on your cheeks.
He didn't ask. You supposed it wasn't his style, or maybe he just assumed you didn't want to talk about it.
Reiner simply took a bite of his bread next to you, leaning forward as he chewed. After moments of silence, Reiner looked at you for a second and then towards the sunset. The corner of his mouth tugged upwards into a soft, almost wistful smile, but he said nothing.
"What?" You finally asked.
He almost replied with "nothing," you could tell, but he sighed and leaned back, either hands at his sides resting on the log. "You know what I miss most about home?" Reiner asked, his gaze locked with the sky. "The way the sun would rise over the hills," he stated.
You realized you'd never talked about itâwhy you were crying that day. To be honest, you didn't want to. Something about his presence had just put you at ease back then, to the point you forgot all of your troubles.
When graduation drew near, you weren't even sure what Reiner's plan was. Everyone knew his perfect scores got him into the top ten, eligible to enlist as a military police officer in the interior. That would've been great for him, but you weren't sure where that left you.
You weren't with Reiner when the Collosal titan had appeared and breached the wall into Trost. But you were there when Eren was discovered to be a titan himself.
From there, something in Reiner had shifted.
Back then, you figured it was realization of some sort. Realization that things were complicated, things were scary, things were real...
Things got even more real when Marco died. Marco wasn't someone you were close with, but he was always there, always kind. If someone as capable as Marco, as determined, as strong, as kind as Marco could die, what would that mean for you and your friends?
Many cadets dropped out that day, despite graduation being so close. You almost did as well. Especially upon seeing Jean's reaction to Marco's death, you didn't know if you had the guts to continue.
But Reiner always had to step in.
"You're stronger than you give yourself credit for," he said, his strong hand on your shoulder. "Look at me," he commanded softly. You hesitated but met his eyes. They were serious, and almost cold now. Different from how they used to look at you. "I know you've got what it takes."
And that was that. Along with Jean, who was sure he'd join the military police, you joined the Survey Corps, falling under the wing of the Commander Erwin Smith.
You were terrified, but you had Reiner.
Things in your lives seemed to come to a halt when Annie was revealed to be a titan. And then Ymir, along with Krista being some kind of royalty and living with a completely different nameâHistoria.
It was all confusing and overwhelming, and you really wished Reiner was there for you. And he was, physically, always there. But then he was distant. Even when sitting directly beside you during meals like he did before, his focus was obviously elsewhere.
And then it happened.
You revisited that day often. When Reiner and Bertholdt transformed, and everything you thought you knew came crashing down.
You couldn't even cry, or scream, or do much of anything. You'd learned a long time ago to accept these things, but God did it hurt.
Then he was gone. He and Bertholdt, back to wherever they came fromâtheir "hometown" as they so often called it. You didn't know back then, and you'd honestly stopped caring.
When Eren was rescued from them, he tried telling you on the way back what Reiner had said in response to him screaming at them. Eren had brought you up, telling Reiner about all the pain and trauma you endured years ago when the inner gate of Wall Maria was broken and your family was killed.
Sorry. Sorry was what he said, according to Eren.
What a coward.
The next time you saw Reiner was a few months later. But it wasn't really him. It was the Armored titan, the same one you remember from childhood who had breached the wall. And now here you were, back in Shiganshina with your fellow scouts.
The bloodshed was monumental in Shiganshina. Bertholdt had died, but Reiner livedâbarely. You weren't there when Hange and Jean had captured him. And you were grateful you weren't. Just three months after discovering his true self, you knew you'd do something stupid like let him go if you had been there. But that part wasn't really up to you, and he got away regardless.
That's when you discovered the truth of everything. The titans, the walls, Paradis, Eldians.
You wished you could hate him. But everyday you'd hoped for the day you could speak to him again, just once.
Those feelings seemed to have formed into anger as the years passed. And by the time you and your fellow soldiers raided Liberio, you basically lived in a shell. You promised your comrades you weren't going to allow feelings to get in the way, and you delivered.
So much happened in such a short amount of time it was difficult to even remember it properly.
You remembered seeing himâreally himâfor the first time again on Paradis. He was almost pathetic looking now, but a part of your heart still yearned for him.
Were the feelings even the same, though?
You and the rest of the scouts had to compromise and join forces with the Warriors in order to put a stop to Eren's plan to go through with the Rumbling. It was the first night that Jean brutally punched Reiner at the campfire. Years ago, you might've blindly taken the side of Reiner. Hell, if he said a word to you since being back on the island maybe you would've defended him. But he didn't. So you let it happen.
When the kids, Gabi and Falco, rushed to Reiner's side after the altercation, you felt as though you needed to physically drag yourself away to avoid saying anything to him.
Instead, you found Jean, cooling off in the outskirts of the woods. His head was in his hands, leaning against a tree as he shook.
You placed a gentle hand on his arm, causing him to jump. You made eye contact, but he was quick to look away. Though, your small touch grounded him.
"Sorry about that," Jean apologized. "I got carried away." His voice was breaking, you'd noticed, but you shook your head.
"Don't apologize," you replied.
You made a choice that evening. The choice to stay loyal to your comrades instead of blindly following Reiner like you did when you were a dumb kid. But it didn't make it any less difficult when he stood there on the boat looking almost like he had years ago.
The expression on his face was that of determination. And the people at his side were none other than Jean and Connie.
You scoffed, pulling your gaze away from the men and staring off into the vast oceanâthe ocean you didn't even knew existed years ago; the ocean Reiner didn't bother mentioning to you those nights you sat together for hours.
You'd gone over every emotion the past four years. You saw his side as best you could. Even so, it was hard to forgive. Especially when Reiner himself hadn't made an effort to speak to you.
"Hey." You didn't look up, you knew it was Jean.
"You gonna talk to loverboy or what?" He asked after a beat of silence. You finally lifted your head to shoot him a glare. Jean simply smiled, looking back at where Reiner and Connie were still talking and then back to you, sitting beside you on the bench.
You remained quiet for a moment after Jean sat beside you, your fingers absently picking at a loose thread on your sleeve. The gentle rock of the boat beneath you seemed to match the churning in your stomach.
"I'm not talking to him," you finally said, keeping your voice low despite the distance between you and the others.
Jean snorted. "Right. Because ignoring him is working so well for you."
You shot him another glare. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"You've been staring at him every chance you get since yesterday." Jean's knowing smile widened as your cheeks flushed with heat. "Don't worry, he's been doing the same thing."
Something fluttered in your chest at his words, but you quickly tamped it down. "Has he... said anything?" The question slipped out before you could stop it, your voice smaller than you intended.
Jean chuckled, that same knowing look in his eyes that made you want to shove him off the bench and into the sea. But then his expression softened.
"No," he admitted. "But it's getting annoying watching you two dance around each other like this. You look at him when he's not looking, he looks at you when you turn away. It's really embarassing for both of you."
You sighed, turning your gaze back to the endless blue horizon. The vastness of the ocean still amazed you, even now. "Well, if he wanted to talk, he would've said something by now."
"Maybe he's thinking the same thing about you," Jean pointed out.
"That's different," you protested weakly.
"How?"
You opened your mouth to respond but found you didn't have an answer that wouldn't sound childish. Jean was right, and you both knew it.
"Look," Jean said, his voice gentler now, "I'm not exactly Reiner's biggest fan. You were there when I..." He flexed his hand, the same one he'd used to punch Reiner the night before, his knuckles reddened now. "But we're all stuck here together now. And whatever was between you twoâ"
"There was nothing between us," you interrupted, the lie bitter on your tongue.
Jean gave you a flat look. "You're a terrible liar. Always have been."
You looked down at your hands, suddenly finding your fingernails fascinating. "It doesn't matter now anyway."
"Maybe not," Jean agreed. "But you're never going to stop wondering if you don't at least talk to him once. Really talk to him."
The silence between you stretched for several long moments as you considered his words. The rational part of you knew he was right. This tension, this unspoken thing hanging in the air between you and Reiner, it would only continue to distract you. And with what lay aheadâwith Eren and the Rumblingâyou couldn't afford distractions. And more importantly, you didn't want to die with regrets.
"Fine," you muttered, standing up with a resigned sigh.
Without waiting for some type of reaction from Jean, you turned and made your way across the deck toward where Reiner and Connie stood. Your heart hammered against your ribs with each step, and you briefly considered turning back. But Jean's words echoed in your mindâyou would never stop wondering if you didn't at least try.
Connie noticed you first, his animated conversation with Reiner faltering as you approached. Reiner turned, and for a moment, you were transported back to those days in the mess hallâhim turning to call your name, saving you a seat beside him.
But his eyes weren't the same. They carried a weight now, dark shadows beneath them speaking of sleepless nights and unshakable guilt.
"Um, I'll just..." Connie mumbled, already backing away, but you barely registered his departure.
You stopped a few feet from Reiner, suddenly unsure what to say. All the anger, all the hurt, all the things you'd rehearsed in your head over the yearsânone of it seemed right now that he was standing in front of you.
"Can we talk?" The words came out steadier than you felt.
Reiner looked surprised, as if that was the last thing he expected to hear from you. He nodded once, hesitantly. "Yeah. Of course."
You nodded, and without another word, turned to lead the way to the stairs. You could feel his presence behind you as you descended into the dimly lit interior of the ship, the wooden steps creaking beneath your weight. The air was cooler here, tinged with the scent of salt and damp wood.
The sleeping cabins were arranged in a narrow corridor, small compartments with barely enough room for the bunks they contained. Most were empty now, with everyone gathered on the upper deck to watch the endless expanse of ocean passing by. You chose one at random, pushing open the door and stepping inside.
The room was tight, with just enough space for two narrow bunks built into the walls and a small porthole that cast a circle of fading evening light across the wooden floor. You sat on one of the bunks, the thin mattress sinking beneath your weight. Reiner hesitated at the doorway for a moment before entering and sitting on the opposite bunk, the space between you barely more than an arm's length but feeling like an unbridgeable chasm.
Reiner's shoulders hunched slightly, his large frame somehow seeming smaller in the confined space. His eyes darted around the cabin before finally settling on his hands, which were clasped tightly in his lap.
You found yourself remembering another small space you'd shared once, years ago during a thunderstorm. The supply shed had been the closest shelter when the rain had caught you both during evening training. You'd sat side by side on crates of gear, listening to the rain hammer against the roof, shoulders touching as Reiner told stories about his hometown to distract you from the thunder. And you remembered how you felt when he held your hand, the way his touch was so gentle, his fingers lacing with yours. Back then, his voice had been warm, his smile easy, his eyes bright with something that made your heart race.
Now, he sat across from you, silent and tense, his gaze fixed on the floor between your feet. The only sound was the creaking of the ship around you and the distant, muffled voices from above.
The silence between you stretched until it became unbearable. Your fingers dug into the thin mattress beneath you, knuckles turning white with the pressure.
"My family is dead because of you," you finally said, your voice quiet but sharp enough to cut through the heavy air. The words hung there, raw and unavoidable. "Every time I look at you, I see that day. The Armored Titan breaking through the gate. The boulder that crushed our home."
Reiner didn't flinch, didn't look away. He just nodded slowly, his eyes hollow. "I know."
"You know?" A bitter laugh escaped your lips. "That's all you have to say? You know?"
"What do you want me to say?" His voice was flat, resigned. The voice of a man who had already condemned himself a thousand times over.
"I want you to say somethingâanythingâother than 'I know,'" you snapped, the anger you'd been holding back finally beginning to surface. "I want you to explain how you could sit with me that day by the training grounds, offering me bread while I cried about my family, knowing it was you who killed them."
Reiner's gaze dropped to the floor again. "I don't have an explanation that would make any sense to you."
"Try me," you challenged, leaning forward. "I've had four years to think about this, Reiner. Four years to try to understand."
He looked up then, and the defeated emptiness in his eyes almost made you recoil. This wasn't the Reiner you rememberedâthe strong, confident soldier who always seemed to know what to say, what to do. This was a shell of that man, worn down by guilt and grief.
"I compartmentalized," he said after a long moment. "The Warrior and the Soldier. Sometimes, I... I forgot which one was real."
"And which one was it?" you asked. "Which version of you was real, Reiner?"
He shook his head slowly. "I don't know anymore. Maybe neither."
You stood up abruptly, unable to sit still with the storm of emotions churning inside you. The cabin was too small to pace properly, but you moved to the porthole, looking out at the darkening sky without really seeing it.
"Do you have any idea what your betrayal did to me?" Your voice was quieter now, but no less intense. "It wasn't just that you were the Armored Titan. It was that you were you. Someone I..." You swallowed hard, forcing the words out. "Someone I cared about. A lot."
You heard the bunk creak as Reiner shifted his weight but didn't turn to look at him.
"I nearly quit the Scouts after you left," you continued, watching your breath fog the glass of the porthole. "I couldn't understand how I could have been so wrong about someone. How I could have trusted you so completely."
Your fingertips pressed against the cool glass as memories flooded backâtraining together in the rain, his hands adjusting your grip on the ODM gear controls, his laughter at your terrible jokes, the way his eyes would find yours across the mess hall.
"And it wasn't just you," you said, your voice growing thick with unshed tears. "I haven't been able to truly trust anyone since. Not completely. There's always this voice in the back of my mind asking if they're hiding something too. If they'll betray me just like you did."
"I'm sorry," Reiner said, his voice barely audible.
You whirled around to face him, anger flaring hot and bright. "Sorry doesn't bring my family back! Sorry doesn't erase the fact that you lied to me for years! Sorry doesn't change the fact that every memory I have of us is tainted now because I don't even know if any of it was real!"
"It was real," Reiner said, standing up now, something finally sparking in his eyes. "That's what you don't understand. It was all real for me too."
"How could it be real when it was all built on a lie?" Your voice rose, echoing in the small space.
"Because I didn't know how to separate the lie from the truth anymore!" He took a step toward you, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. "Do you think this has been easy for me? Do you think I just walked away and forgot about all of youâforgot about you?"
You stared at him, momentarily stunned by the sudden emotion in his voice.
"I've thought about you every single day since then," he continued, his voice breaking. "I see your face in my dreams. I hear your voice when it's quiet. You've been haunting me for four years, and I deserve it."
The raw pain in his voice knocked the breath from your lungs. Tears spilled down your cheeks as you stared at him, really seeing him for perhaps the first time since you'd learned the truthânot as the Armored Titan, not as the Warrior, not even as the Soldier, but as Reiner. Just Reiner, broken and haunted and so very human.
"I know you hate me," he said, quieter now, his own eyes shining with unshed tears. "You should hate me. If I could go back and change what I did..."
"But you can't," you whispered.
"No," he agreed. "I can't."
The admission hung between you, simple and devastating in its truth. You couldn't change the past. Your family was still gone. The walls were still broken. And Reinerâyour Reinerâhad still been the one to do it.
But the man standing before you now, shoulders slumped under the weight of his actions, eyes filled with a pain that mirrored your ownâhe wasn't the Armored Titan anymore. He was just as broken as you were.
Then suddenly you moved, your arms wrapping around his waist, your face pressed against his chest as sobs wracked your body. You could feel his heartbeat, strong and steady against your cheek, so at odds with the broken man it belonged to.
For a terrible second, he remained frozen, and you thought you'd made a mistake. Then his arms came around you, tight and desperate, one hand cradling the back of your head as he buried his face in your hair. His body trembled against yours, and you realized he was crying tooâsilent, shuddering sobs that seemed to come from somewhere deep inside him.
The stubborn shame that had kept you both at arm's length dissolved in the salt of your mingled tears. There, in the dim light of the cabin, with the gentle rocking of the ship beneath you and the uncertain future ahead, you held each other like the last two survivors of a shipwreckâbroken, exhausted, but somehow still alive.
You weren't sure how long you stayed like that, holding each other in the dim light of the cabin, your tears gradually subsiding into uneven breaths. His arms around you felt both familiar and foreignâthe shape of him changed, but the way he held you still the same.
When you finally pulled back, just enough to look up at him, your faces were inches apart. Your hands had somehow moved to his shoulders, feeling the unfamiliar angles where muscle had once been. His eyes, red-rimmed from crying, searched yours with a question he didn't dare voice.
"I still hate what you did," you whispered, your voice hoarse. "I don't know if I can ever forgive that."
Reiner nodded slightly, accepting your words without defense. One of his hands had found its way to your face, his thumb gently brushing away a tear from your cheek.
"But I don't know how to hate you," you admitted, the confession tearing itself from somewhere deep inside you. "I've tried for four years, and I just... can't."
Something flickered in his eyesâa spark of something you hadn't seen since before everything fell apart. Hope, maybe. Or longing.
You weren't sure who closed the distance. Maybe both of you, drawn together like the inevitable pull of gravity. His lips found yours in a kiss that was hesitant at first, as if he expected you to push him away. When you didn'tâwhen instead you pressed closer, your fingers curling into the fabric of his shirtâthe hesitation gave way to a desperate need that matched your own.
Reiner's arms tightened around you, backing you against the wall beside the porthole. The cool glass pressed against your shoulder, a stark contrast to the heat of his body against yours. His kiss deepened, years of unspoken feelings pouring into it as his tongue met yours.
You gasped against his mouth, your hands sliding up to tangle in his hair, longer now than you remembered. The scrape of his beard against your skin was new, and your heart skipped a beat at the way his breath hitched when you tugged gently at his hair.
When you pulled away again, breathless, his eyes were dark with a mixture of desire and pain. "I shouldn't be doing this," he whispered, even as his thumb traced circles on your hip. "After everything I've done..."
"Shut up," you murmured, pulling him back to you. "Just shut up, Reiner."
He made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob against your lips. "Still stubborn," he breathed.
Your hands tangled in his hair, eyes squeezed shut as you took in the feel of him. You were desperate, you knew. You felt pathetic, but you wanted him. Needed to be close to him.
"It's embarrassing how long I've wanted to do this," you murmured against his lips, your voice barely audible over the sound of your racing hearts.
His forehead pressed against yours, his eyes closed as he took an unsteady breath. "When we were back in training, that day in Stohess..." His voice was rough, trailing off as your lips found the curve of his jaw.
"Why didn't you kiss me then?" you asked, the question muffled against his skin.
Reiner's laugh was soft and broken. "I wanted to. Every second we were together." His hands slid down to your waist, anchoring you against him as if afraid you might disappear. "I told myself it was because of the mission. That I couldn't get distracted."
You pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, your hand coming up to touch his face, feeling the unfamiliar texture of his beard beneath your fingertips. "And the real reason?"
He swallowed hard, his gaze dropping for a moment before meeting yours again. "I was afraid that if I started, I wouldn't be able to stop. That I'd tell you everything." The admission seemed to cost him, his voice barely above a whisper. "And then you'd hate me."
"I did hate you," you said quietly. "When I found out."
His eyes clouded with pain, but he nodded. "I know."
You leaned in, brushing your lips against his again, more gently this time. "But I hated myself more for still wanting this. For still wanting you."
Reiner's response was to kiss you again, deeper this time, his body pressing yours more firmly against the wall. One hand tangled in your hair while the other gripped your hip, his touch both gentle and desperate. You could taste the salt of tearsâwhose, you weren't sure anymoreâand something else, something uniquely him that you had tried so hard to forget.
The ship rocked with a stronger wave, causing you both to sway. Reiner's arm tightened around your waist, steadying you, and for a brief moment, you were back in the training grounds, his arms around you as he corrected your stance, his breath warm against your ear.
"I missed you," he breathed against your mouth, the words so quiet they might have been imagined. "Every day."
You didn't answer with words. You couldn't. The anger was still there, simmering beneath the surface, alongside grief and betrayal and a hundred other emotions you couldn't name. But for now, in the dim light of the cabin with the sea stretching endlessly around you, you let yourself remember what it felt like to be in his arms.
Your lips found his again, harder this time, your teeth catching his lower lip in a way that made him groan. His hands tightened on you in response, lifting you slightly as he pressed you more firmly against the wall. The kiss deepened, grew more urgent, years of longing and hurt and need pouring into it.
The world outsideâEren, the Rumbling, the fate that awaited all of youâseemed distant and unreal compared to the solid warmth of Reiner against you, the familiar-yet-different taste of his mouth, the sound of his ragged breathing mingling with your own.
This wasn't forgiveness. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But as his lips moved from your mouth to your jaw, tracing a path that made your breath catch, you realized it might be something like a beginning. A chance to finally confront all the things left unsaid between you, all the hurt and the betrayal, but also all the moments that had been real.
Reinerâs hands slid down your sides, fingers digging into your hips as he kissed you with a desperation that made your knees weak. The rough scrape of his beard against your skin sent shivers down your spine, and when his teeth grazed your bottom lip, you gaspedâonly for him to swallow the sound with another searing kiss.
This isn't at all how you expected your "talk" to go. Years of rehearsing different scripts in your head about how you'd tell him you hate him when you saw him, how you'd show him how it felt to feel betrayed and alone... All of those came crumbling down when he touched you like this, so gently but also so needy.
Not that the idea in general hadn't crossed your mind an embarrassing and pathetic amount of times. That, you couldn't deny. Since your cadet days you'd wondered what it would feel like with him, hoping he'd make a move. But he never did. Your heart skipped a beat when you felt the sadness well up inside you again, but that feeling quickly went away when he tilted his head to better kiss you.
His body pressed you harder against the wall, the heat of him searing through your clothes. You could feel the evidence of his arousal against your thigh, and the knowledge of how badly he wanted youâafter all this timeâsent a thrill through you.
Then, without warning, he broke the kiss, his breath ragged. His eyes were dark, pupils blown wide, lips swollen from yours.
"Tell me to stop," he murmured, voice rough.
You didnât.
A low sound escaped him, something between a groan and a growl, before his hands tightened on your waistâand then he was lifting you, turning, and depositing you onto the narrow bunk behind you in one swift motion. The thin mattress barely cushioned the impact, but you barely had time to register it before Reiner was on his knees between your legs, his hands sliding up your thighs with a reverence that made your breath hitch.
His gaze flicked up to yours, searching, hesitantâlike he still couldnât believe you were letting him touch you.
"Please," he breathed, fingers curling into the fabric of your pants. "Let me taste you."
The raw need in his voice sent a jolt straight to your core. He was begging. Reinerâthe man who had once been so confident, so sure of himselfâwas now on his knees for you, looking up at you like you were the only thing that could save him.
You swallowed hard, your pulse hammering in your throat. You also didn't expect it to go like this. The Reiner that you knew back then presented himself to be some kind of big leader, something you admired because of how he never seemed to let it go to his head. He was one of the strongest, but he was humble.
So seeing him like this, desperate between your legs, felt almost like culture shock.
But even so, being with him, feeling him, talking to him all felt so good. So good you could cry. "Okay," you breathed, nodding.
His fingers trembled slightly as he undid the fastenings of your pants, tugging them down your legs along with your underwear. Your cunt was already pathetically wet just from making out, and suddenly you just wanted to close your legs so he wouldn't see how much he affected you. Stubborn pride still warred inside you even now. The cool air of the cabin ghosted over your exposed skin, but it was nothing compared to the heat of Reinerâs breath as he leaned in, pressing a slow, open-mouthed kiss to the inside of your thigh.
"You're so beautiful," he whispered, making your heart swell.
Reinerâs hands spread your thighs wider, his thumbs brushing over the damp curls between them. His breath stuttered when he saw how wet you were, his fingers tracing your folds with agonizing slowness.
âFuck,â he muttered, voice wrecked.
He kissed at your inner thighs some more, almost like he just couldn't get enough of the simple action. He'd lick at them, suck them, anything. Reiner was willing to drag this out, it seemed.
"Has anyone ever done this for you before?" Reiner asked, his tone carrying a mix of emotions, staring up at you with his pretty hazel eyes as he kissed at the soft skin of your thighs. Deep down, he selfishly hoped no one else had gotten to see you like thisâfeel you like this.
Your breath hitched at the sight, unable to pull your gaze away and similarly unable to stop your arousal and need as you felt yourself wet the sheets beneath you even further. "I don't see how that's any of your business," you replied stubbornly, wanting to keep the small amount of control you still held.
That gave Reiner all the answer he needed. "Hm," he responded, careful not to anger you, careful not to upset you. but also understanding and seeing just how much you wanted thisâwanted him. And equally he was exceptionally aware of the way his cock twitched in his pants, desperate to make you feel good, desperate to feel your thighs around his head and your fingers against his scalp, desperate to hear you in these moments he's imagined you in so many times.
Reiner didnât wait for another teasing remark from youâhis mouth was on you in an instant, his tongue dragging a slow, filthy stripe up your soaked cunt, groaning against you like heâd been starving for this. The sound alone made your back arch off the bunk, a sharp gasp tearing from your lips as his hands clamped down on your thighs, holding you open for him.
He was messyâno finesse, no practiced rhythm, just pure, desperate hunger. His tongue lapped at you like he was trying to memorize your taste, his nose pressing against your clit as he buried his face between your legs. Every flick of his tongue was sloppy, wet, loud, the obscene sounds of his mouth working you filling the tiny cabin. You could feel his stubble scraping against your sensitive skin, the rough drag only making the pleasure sharper, more overwhelming.
âFuckâReinerââ Your fingers tangled in his blonde hair, gripping hard as his tongue circled your clit before sucking it between his lips. His groan vibrated through you, his hands sliding under your ass to tilt your hips up, giving him better access as he devoured you.
He was relentless, like heâd been waiting years for thisâbecause he had. Every muffled sound he made against your cunt, every time his tongue plunged inside you only to drag back up, every time his lips sealed around your clit to suckâit was all too much, and yet you never wanted it to stop.
His enthusiasm was almost embarrassing, the way he moaned into you like he was the one being pleasured, his hips moving against his hand as he rubbed his cock through his pants. You could feel the wetness of your own arousal smeared across his chin, and the sight alone had your thighs trembling around his head.
Drool mixed with your arousal, dripping down his chin as he ate you out like a man possessed. His hands gripped your thighs, spreading you wider, keeping you open for him as his tongue plunged inside you, fucking into you with rough, eager strokes before retreating to suck your clit again.
"Taste so good," he panted against you, his voice wrecked. "Fuck, fuck, I knew you wouldâ"
His words cut off into a groan as he redoubled his efforts, his tongue flicking rapidly over your clit before he sealed his lips around it again, sucking hard. The wet, filthy sounds of his mouth on you filled the cabin, obscene and perfect, and you could feel the way his hips rocked slightly against the bunk, rutting into nothing as he got off on just tasting you.
"Been thinking about thisâ" he rasped, pulling back just enough to speak before diving back in, his tongue circling your clit in tight, relentless circles. "âevery nightâ"
His fingers dug into your thighs, leaving marks as he held you down, refusing to let you squirm away from the overwhelming pleasure.
"Close," you choked out, your hips jerking against his mouth. "Iâm so closeâ"
Reiner growled, the sound vibrating through you as he sucked your clit into his mouth one last time, his tongue flicking over it rapidlyâ
And then you were coming, your back bowing off the bunk as pleasure crashed through you in waves. He didnât let up, licking you through it, swallowing every drop of you as you shuddered and gasped above him.
When you finally went limp, panting, he pulled back just enough to look up at you.
His chest heaved, his eyes dark with need. But above that, it was like he needed some confirmation he did good.
"Fuck," he breathed. "Are you okay?"
Your fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt, pulling him up your body until his weight settled over you, pressing you deeper into the thin mattress. His skin was fever-hot, his muscles taut with restraint, but his eyesâthose damn hazel eyesâwere soft, almost reverent, as he looked down at you.
You didn't answer, not verbally at least.
Your hand slid into his hair, gripping tight as you dragged his mouth to yours, kissing him deeply, tasting yourself on his tongue. A rough groan tore from his throat, his hips jerking forward instinctively, the hard length of his cock grinding against your still-sensitive clit through his pants.
His groan was muffled against your mouth as you licked into him, your fingers tightening in his hair. You could feel the way his body shuddered when you nipped at his bottom lip, the way his hips jerked forward instinctively, grinding his cockâso fucking hard against your thigh.
âGod, youâreââ His voice broke as you kissed him again, rougher this time, your teeth dragging over his lip. His hands gripped your waist, fingers digging in like he was afraid youâd vanish if he let go. âFuck, I needâpleaseââ
"Reiner," you breathed, pressing a kiss to his jaw. "Please fuck me."
You could feel itâthe way his entire body trembled with the effort of holding back, the way his breath came in ragged bursts against your mouth. His hands fumbled with his belt, his fingers shaking as he undid the buckle, his cock springing free, thick and flushed and aching for you.
Reiner didnât waste another second.
He hooked his hands under your knees, spreading you wider, his gaze locked on where your slick glistened between your thighs. His breath hitched, his cock twitching against your stomach as he lined himself up, the blunt head pressing against your entrance.
âLook at me,â he demanded, his voice rough.
You did.
His eyes burned into yours as he pushed inside, slow, so agonizingly slow, his jaw clenched tight as he fought to keep control. The stretch was delicious, the way your walls fluttered around him making his hips stutter.
âFuck,â he gritted out, his fingers digging into your thighs. âYou feelâChristâyou feel even better than I imagined.â
And then he was seated fully inside you, his hips flush against yours, his cock buried to the hilt. For a moment, neither of you movedâjust breathed, just felt, the weight of years of longing crashing over you both.
Thenâbecause he needed to see it, needed to know this was realâhe leaned back on his heels, pulling out almost all the way just to watch the way your cunt clung to him, glistening and desperate, before slamming back in. His cock disappeared inside you, your wetness coating his dick as your body stretched to take him.
The sound you made was sinful.
Reinerâs hips snapped forward again, harder this time, his cock dragging against your walls in a way that made your toes curl. His grip shifted from your wrist to your hip, holding you in place as he fucked into you with slow, deep strokesâlike he was savoring every second, like he wanted to memorize the way your body took him.
His dick glistened with your arousal, disappearing inside you with each thrust, your cunt gripping him like it was made for him. He couldnât look awayâcouldnât stop the way his breath hitched as he watched himself fuck into you, over and over, your body taking him so perfectly.
Reinerâs rhythm was relentless, each deep stroke dragging a gasp from your lips. His broad palm slid down your stomach, fingers gliding through your slick until his thumb found your clit, rubbing tight, rough circles that made your toes curl.
"There you go," he murmured, voice thick with praise as he watched your face twist in pleasure. "So fucking pretty when you take me like this. Canât believe youâre realâcanât believe I get to have you."
You whimpered, your hips lifting to meet his thrusts, desperate for more, for everything. Reiner moaned at the way your body clenched around him, his thumb pressing harder against your clit.
"Love the way you take me," he panted, his thumb pressing harder against your clit. "Like you were made for me, huh? Made to take my cock just like thisâshitâ"
Then, without warning, he leaned forward, his chest pressing flush against yours, his weight pinning you completely beneath him. The new angle made him sink deeper, his cock hitting a spot inside you that had your vision whiting out for a second.
"There," he rasped, his breath hot against your ear. "Thatâs it, sweetheart. Let me have you just like thisâfuckâ"
His thrusts turned slower but impossibly harder, each one dragging a broken moan from your lips. His fingers tangled in your hair, tilting your head back so he could kiss you again, swallowing your gasps like he needed them to survive.
He braced himself above you, muscles taut, sweat glistening on his skin as he watched your faceâevery flutter of your lashes, every bitten-off moanâlike he was memorizing you all over again.
His hips rolled into yours with a deep, almost reverent grind, pressing so deep you could feel him in your ribs. Your breath hitched as he lingered there, his tip nudging that perfect, aching spot inside you before pulling back with a slow, torturous drag that made your toes curl.
"Feel how deep I am?" he breathed, his fingers tightening on your hip as he rocked into you again, slow and unhurried, as if he had all the time in the world. "Fuck, youâre perfect."
His voice was wrecked, his body trembling with the effort of holding back. But he didnât rushâjust kept moving inside you with that same maddening pace, every thrust a sweet torment.
"Could stay like this forever," he admitted, his lips brushing your jaw. "Just like thisâburied inside you, feeling you clench around me like you never wanna let me go."
"Reiner," you whined.
"I've got you," he responded, hips never stopping.
And when your back arched, your body tightening around him, he didnât speed upâjust kept fucking you through it, his lips pressed to your neck, whispering praise as pleasure washed over you in waves.
Reinerâs thrusts grew more erratic, his control slipping as your walls fluttered around him, pulling him deeper with each desperate clench. His breath came in ragged gasps, his forehead pressed against yours as he fought to hold on just a little longer.
âIâfuckâIâm close,â he groaned, his voice rough with need. His fingers dug into your hips, his rhythm faltering as pleasure coiled tight in his gut.
You arched beneath him, nails scraping down his back as you panted, âInside⌠please, ReinerâI want you to cum inside me.â
His entire body tensed at your words, a shudder running through him. He pulled back just enough to look into your eyes, his own dark with lust and something dangerously close to worship.
âAre youâfuckâare you sure?â he rasped, hips stuttering as he struggled to keep his pace steady.
You nodded, biting your lip as you clenched around him deliberately, drawing a broken groan from his lips.
âYes,â you breathed. âWant to feel youâall of you.â
That was all it took.
Reinerâs restraint shattered.
"Fuckâgonna fill you up so good," he panted, his forehead dropping against yours. "Gonna make sure you feel itâ"
You clenched around him, your own climax building again, and he cursed, his rhythm faltering.
"Come with me," he demanded, his voice wrecked. "Wanna feel you cum on my cock while Iâm deep inside youâfuckâpleaseâ"
His words tipped you over the edge. Pleasure crashed through you, your body tightening around him in waves, and Reiner lost it.
With a growl that was almost feral, he slammed into you one last time, burying himself to the hilt as his cock pulsed inside you, hot and thick. His body shuddered violently, his fingers gripping you like a lifeline as he spilled deep, his release filling you in waves.
You could feel him pulsing inside you, his cock twitching as he rode out his orgasm, his forehead pressed to yours. When he finally stilled, he didnât pull awayâjust stayed there, his body heavy and warm against yours, his breath slowly steadying.
After a long moment, he lifted his head, his gaze soft as he brushed a sweaty strand of hair from your face.
"Okay?" he murmured, his thumb tracing your cheekbone.
You nodded, your fingers lazily tracing the muscles of his back.
Reiner exhaled, something like reliefâor maybe wonderâflickering in his eyes before he leaned down, pressing a slow, lingering kiss to your lips.
"Good," he murmured against your mouth.
You lay in comfortable silence for what felt like hours but was likely only minutes, Reiner's weight pressing you into the thin mattress, his breath warm against your neck. His fingers traced lazy patterns on your skin, as though memorizing the feel of you. Neither of you wanted to break the spell, to acknowledge the world waiting outside this small cabin.
"I love you," you whispered finally, the words escaping before you could think better of them. They hung in the air between you, raw and honest.
Reiner stilled, his breath catching. Slowly, he raised himself up on his elbows to look at you, his hazel eyes searching yours with an intensity that made your heart skip. For a terrible moment, you thought you'd said too much, revealed too much of yourself to someone who had once betrayed you.
But then his expression softened, a genuine smileâone you hadn't seen in yearsâspreading across his face. "I love you too," he said, his voice steady and sure. "I always have."
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against yours. "I know it doesn't change anything," he murmured. "I know it doesn't make up for what I did. But it's true."
His eyes grew serious again. "Whatever happens with Eren, with the Rumbling⌠I'm going to protect you. I promise."
Before you could respond, a sharp knock at the door made you both jump.
"Hey, you two done?" Connie's voice called through the thin wood. "There's food up on the deck if you're interested. Kinda limited, but better than nothing."
You and Reiner exchanged wide-eyed looks before scrambling to get dressed, movements frantic and clumsy in the small space. Your fingers fumbled with buttons and clasps as you tried to make yourselves presentable.
"Uh, yeah," Reiner called back, his voice remarkably steady considering his panicked expression. "We'll be right there."
You could hear the smirk in Connie's voice as he replied, "Take your time. Not like we can hear everything through these paper-thin walls or anything."
Your face burned as you hurriedly tucked in your shirt. Reiner looked equally mortified, though a small, almost boyish grin played at the corners of his mouth when your eyes met.
"Ready?" he asked softly, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear.
You nodded, taking a deep breath before opening the door. Connie was waiting in the narrow corridor, a knowing grin splitting his face. Without a word, he turned and headed up the stairs, gesturing for you both to follow.
Reiner went first, and you couldn't help but notice the way Connie immediately engaged him in animated conversation as they climbed, acting as though nothing unusual had happened at all. Their voices faded slightly as they reached the deck above.
Jean appeared at your side as you finished climbing the stairs.
"So," he said, raising an eyebrow. "I take it the talk went well?"
You felt heat rise to your cheeks. "Yeah, really well," you replied, hoping that Connie was just teasing and no one else heard a thing.
"I just mean," he continued, a stupid and annoying grin on your face, "when I suggested you two clear the air, I didn't necessarily mean you should bring down the whole ship with yourâ"
Your face burned with embarrassment and fury. "I will literally throw you overboard, Jean," you hissed, shoving his shoulder hard enough to make him stumble back. "I swear to Godâ"
Jean laughed, ducking away from your next swing. "Hey, I'm happy for you guys! Honestly!" He held up his hands in surrender, still grinning as he backed up the stairs. "Just doing my part as your friend to give you shit about it."
imposter syndrome is so funny like fuuuuck i hope nobody finds out im tricking people into thinking im competent by knowing things and doing them
Hi all! I post my AOT theories on TikTok, and a commenter recommended sharing them here. Iâm very new to tumbler, sooo sorry???
This theory is that the Ackerman clan has a naming system, each generation moves down the alphabet, that is why Kenny and Kuchel both had K names, and she names Levi with an L name. This would imply Mikasaâs dad was an L name as well (makes sense he would be a similar generation with Levi) and Mikasaâs kids would be N names.
Also implies that maybe this system started when they were enhanced with titan skills, making Levi and Mikasa the 12th/13th generation

do you wanna make out?
plot! jason is busy minding his own businesses, you're not even sure what he's doing, but whatever that is, it's taking a lot of time and you're bored. so you decide to simply ask him "wanna make out?" and you can bet your ass he wants to.
f!reader, implied relationship
a/n: thank you so much for the request sweetie!! i loved writing this because arhh it's so jason
Jason had his boots kicked up on the coffee table, leaning forward with a half-broken gun in his hands, the pieces scattered across a ragged old cloth he used for cleaning. His brow was furrowed, lips pulled into that sharp scowl he got when something wasnât cooperating. The TV was on, some rerun of a crime drama playing in the background, but he wasnât really paying attention.
His focus was all on the weapon and the meticulous work of putting it back together.
You were sprawled across the couch on the other side, legs draped over the armrest, a book open but forgotten in your lap. The apartment smelled faintly like gun oil, leather, and the lingering warmth of coffee from earlier.
Jason was muttering something under his breath, probably cursing at the jammed slide. His hands moved with practiced precision, long fingers glinting with oil and metal.
And for a while, you just watched him.
The way his jaw flexed when he concentrated.
The muscles in his forearms pulling and shifting under his shirt.
That slight crease between his brows like the whole world annoyed him but he was stubborn enough to take it apart piece by piece.
Then, maybe because you were bored. Maybe because you liked messing with him. Or maybe because you just couldnât help yourself, you tilted your head, chewed on your bottom lip, and asked casually, like it was nothing:
âDo you wanna make out?â
Jason froze.
Literally froze, like a video buffering in the middle of a fight scene.
His hands stopped mid motion, the half assembled piece of the gun hovering between his fingers. Slowly, his eyes flicked up to you, sharp blue narrowed at first like he thought he misheard.
ââŚWhat?â His voice was low, gravel-edged, caught somewhere between suspicion and disbelief.
You blinked innocently. âI saidâdo you wanna make out?â
The corner of your mouth tugged upward, watching him sputter.
For a long moment, he just stared. Like his brain was rebooting.
His jaw worked silently, like he wanted to come up with some snarky retort, but nothing was firing. Jason Todd, the guy who always had a comeback, always had a jab, was speechless.
He set the gun down a little too fast, the metal clinking against the table. He wiped his hands on the rag, as if suddenly remembering they were dirty. His eyes darted from your face to your mouth and back again, and then he barked out a laugh, half disbelieving, half hungry.
âYou canât justâsay shit like that when Iâmââ He gestured at the gun parts like they were some sacred duty. âJesus, sweetheart. You tryna give me a heart attack?â
You arched a brow. âSo⌠is that a no?â
Jason groaned, running a hand through his dark hair, messing it up further. He leaned back in his chair like he needed space, but the flush on his neck gave him away.
âHell no, thatâs not a no.â His smirk finally cracked through, sharp and wolfish. âThatâs the biggest damn yes youâre ever gonna get from me.â
You pretended to consider it, tapping your chin. âYou donât sound very convincing.â
That was it.
Jason was out of his chair before you could blink, crossing the small gap in two long strides. He braced his hands on either side of you on the couch, caging you in. His grin was dangerous now, mischief sparking in his eyes.
âNot convincing, huh?â he murmured, leaning down, voice dropping an octave. âSay that again after Iââ
But he didnât even finish the sentence. His mouth was already on yours.
It wasnât tentative. It was Jason, so it was all heat and demand and a little reckless, like heâd been waiting for you to say that forever. His hands slid from the couch cushion to your waist, pulling you closer like he couldnât stand any space between you.
You laughed against his mouth, the sound muffled, and he growled in response, kissing you harder.
When you tugged lightly at the back of his shirt, he groaned like youâd just won a war you didnât know you were fighting.
Pulling back just slightly, his lips hovering over yours, he muttered, breathless: âYou're evil. You know that, right?â
âEvil?â you teased, brushing your nose against his. âFor asking if you wanted to make out?â
âFor distracting me with that mouth when I was trying to be responsibleâ he shot back, though his smirk betrayed how little he cared about the gun parts on the table anymore.
âGuess you werenât that responsibleâ you whispered.
Jason chuckled darkly, thumb brushing your jaw as his eyes softened, still sharp, but with something warmer underneath. âSweetheart⌠with you around? I donât stand a damn chance.â
And then he kissed you again, slower this time, deeper. Like he was making it very, very clear: the answer would always be yes.

Jason hadnât messaged you in days. No âgood morning,â no jokes about how coffee should be federally mandated, not even a dumb meme sent at 3AM. Just silence.
Wellâ Silence and a final message that felt like it had been ripped from a spy thriller. Vague. Ominous. A warning:âGotta ghost for a while. Donât freak. Iâll come back. I promise.â And then nothing.
He disappeared like he said he would. Quiet. Cold. Complete. But promises donât make beds warmer. Or dinner cook itself. Or stop the way the evenings seemed to stretch, long and thin and aching, until you started talking to the shadows like they might talk back.
He didnât tell you why he had to go. Didnât say it was your fault. Didnât give you a list of mistakes to obsess over.
But your brain? It built them anyway. Stacked up every quiet moment and every half-finished sentence, replayed them like a skipping record, and convinced you maybeâ just maybeâ he left because of you.
Because you needed too much. Because you asked him to stay safe. Because you made him feel soft in a world where softness gets you killed.
You tried not to be angry. Really, you did. Because deep down, you knew this wasnât a betrayal. It wasnât abandonment. It was Jasonâbeing Jason.
A man whoâd rather be bleeding in an alley than admit heâs scared. A man raised by grief and war and Gotham, who still somehow made you eggs in the morning like heâd always had a home.
So you stayed quiet. Came back to the same apartment every night. Let the silence keep you company. And pretended you werenât checking your phone every time it buzzed.
But tonight? Tonight the silence broke.
You knew something was different the moment your key turned in the lock. There was lightâsoft and goldenâpouring from the kitchen like it had missed you. And something was humming⌠not a song, not quite. Just⌠warmth.
You froze, halfway in the doorway, fingers brushing the bat by the umbrella stand, just in case. Then a voice⌠gruff, low, familiar. Like someone trying to remember how to speak again.
âHey, mamaâs home.â You dropped the bat before your brain even caught up.
Jason was standing at the stove, back to you, hoodie slung over his broad shoulders, hair still wet from a shower heâd definitely taken in your bathroom. Like heâd never left. Like heâd just gone out for groceries.
âYouâre outta everything,â he said over his shoulder, voice casual but scratchy like he hadnât used it in days. âSeriously. I opened your fridge and it was just⌠sad. Tragic. I donât know how you survived. Chips and spite?â
He laughed, and it hit you like a sucker punch. Because it was him. Because he was here.   And because suddenly, your chest was breaking open and your eyes were already full. Jason mustâve heard your breath hitch. He turned fast, eyes catching yoursâ sharp, blue, always too observant. His expression dropped.
    âHeyâhey, baby, whatâs wrong?â
He was already in front of you, hands on your arms, scanning your face like he could decode it. Like maybe the answer to everything he was afraid of was written in your tears.
You couldnât even answer. Your lip just trembled, and then you were gripping him like he might vanish again if you didnât hold tight enough.    He didnât flinch. Didnât tease. Just wrapped his arms around you like armor, hands running slow circles across your back. Letting you fall apart.
âHey, youâre okay. Iâve got you.â His voice was softer now, buried in your hair. âIâm here. Iâm not goinâ anywhere. You hear me?â
You didnât mean to say it. You didnât even know the words were waiting. But they came out anyway. Small, splintered, terrified.
      âWas it my fault?â
Jason froze for a second. Then pulled back just enough to see your face, his expression softening like melted asphalt.
      âWhat?â
âYou leaving⌠was it because of me?â
His brows pinched. âNo. No, baby. Shitâ no. Never you.â
His thumb brushed away a tear, then another, like each one was something he had to personally undo.
âLook, I know Iâm not great at the whole âcommunicationâ thing. Or the... âtalking about my feelings without making a sarcastic commentâ thing.â You gave a wet laugh. Just barely. âBut it wasnât you. I had to handle something. Couldnât risk it touching you, okay? Youâre the one good thing I got. Iâd never leave because of you.â
You nodded, but didnât let go. Couldnât.
âSay it back to me,â he whispered. âJust once. So I know you know it.â
    âIt wasnât my fault.â
He kissed your temple, slow and certain.
     âThatâs right.â
He let you sit on the counter while he finished cooking, one hand always within reachâ on your knee, your back, your arm. Like he knew the silence he left behind had teeth.
âYou hungry? Itâs just pasta. Iâm outta practice.â
âIâll eat anything you make,â you mumbled, still watching him like he might dissolve into steam.
âDangerous thing to say to a guy raised by Alfred,â he smirked. âI once lit a toaster on fire.â
âYou mean re-lit it,â you said, lips quirking up.
He grinned. âSee? You did miss me.â
You didnât answer. Just slipped off the counter and slid your fingers into his free hand.
     âCan I⌠keep holding you?â
He squeezed your hand. âYou never gotta ask that.â
And for the rest of the night, he didnât let go. His hand stayed in yours through dinner, through the dishes, through the quiet talk on the couch about where he went and why.
He didnât promise the world. Didnât pretend he was fixed. But he looked you in the eyes and promised this: âIf I ever have to disappear again⌠youâll know why. No more vanishing acts. Iâm not gonna leave you wondering. That was the worst part, huh?â
       You nodded.
âIâm sorry. I wonât do that again.â
And for once, you believed him. Not because Jason Todd was good at keeping promises. But because he was learning how to keep you.

Bucky Barnes is not someone youâd call a friend.
Heâs more of a nuisance, really. A fossil, dropped off at your door by one Sam Wilson with a simple request: âCan he crash here for a few days?â
That was four months ago, and Buckyâs still living on your couch.
Which is exactly where heâs sat right now, head buried in a book you barely even remember owning. The pages, so full of neglect, give him hassle as he tries to turn them, catching on one another and refusing to be pried apart by vibranium fingers.
âHow do I look?â You ask as you step out from your bedroom, hands fastening an earring into your right ear.
Unfazed by your appearance, he doesnât bother glancing up from his book as he sardonically replies, âWith your eyes, like the rest of us.â
You contemplate plucking one of your heels off and throwing it at his head. Knowing your luck, it will fly right past him and smash your coffee table into pieces. Just like your roommate, itâs vintage. Unlike your roommate, you willingly brought it into your home.
âHa. Ha.â Rounding the couch, you swat his feet off the table before snapping his book closed. âNow if youâre done playing comedian, would you answer the fucking question?â
âThatâs your generation's problem, you know? You swear more than you breathe.â
âBetter than waging a world war every few years.â
âConsidering the current state of the world, I wouldnât rest too comfortably on that one,â Bucky rises from his seat and squeezes past you, irritatingly close in a way that makes sure you feel each defined muscle in his chest as it brushes against your shoulder. âAnyway, you look fine, as always.â
âI look fine?â You parrot his words and follow his footsteps over to the kitchen. âCareful Barnes, donât get too excited, itâs not healthy for a senior citizenâs heart.â
âYou know what I mean,â a heavy sigh slips out the soldierâs mouth as he busies himself filling the kettle, glancing back at you from over his shoulder as he continues speaking. âI donât understand why you worry so much about all of⌠this.â He gestures at you, water splashing off the tips of his fingers.
âGod forbid a woman cares about looking good on a date,â youâre becoming annoyingly aware of the pout on your lips and try your best to correct it, whilst prying open the fridge door and fishing out a bottle of beer. âGee if only it were still the 40s, then I could slap some mercury on my lips and hit the town with a man ready to buy me off my daddy for the cheap, cheap price of two goats!â
The frustration within you only rises as you struggle with the bottleâs cap, the skin of your hand pinching as you put all your force behind removing it. Since when are twist-tops so damn hard to twist off?
Buckyâs by the kettle, pouring boiling hot water into a mug heâs wrongfully claimed as his and looking irritatingly fine surrounded by steam â which has your mind trailing back to a few weeks ago: an early morning, exiting your bedroom to find your lodger stepping out the bathroom with nothing but a towel around his waist and the remnant dew of a steaming hot shower trailing down his very naked, very defined biceps, and pectorals, and- Heâs not even trying to mask the amusement on his face as he indulges in your failure.
âDonât you think youâre being a little ridiculous?â He asks and pries the bottle out of your hold, effortlessly ripping the cap off with a twist of his left hand. A familiar warmth curls between your legs, awakening a response from you that youâve sworn, under no circumstances, will happen due to Bucky Barnes. You barely want to exchange air with him, nevermind bodily fluids. âThereâs no way youâre worth two goats.â
âEvery day I wake up and resist the urge to smother you in your sleep.â
Your vitriol is met with a smirk taking over his lips. Watching as he brings the beer up to his mouth, you catch yourself forgetting to blink as the soldier engages you both in a staring contest, all the while heâs tilting the bottle up to steal the first sip. He presses the cold glass back into your hand. You try not to focus on his tongue, peeking out to swipe over his bottom lip and clean up a remnant drop of beer.
In a move that puts you even more on edge, Bucky shuffles closer to you. Delirium floods your mind as the smell of smoke, and musk, and a just a twinge of sweat floods your nose, a smell so masculine it has you debating setting feminism and your own self-preservation back hundreds of years by nuzzling your face into the pulse point of his neck, like youâre some damn animal being exposed to pheromones. Meanwhile, he appears none the wiser to the negative effect heâs having on you, too busy reaching his arm behind you and into the fridge.
âThose boys you entertain, do they ever pay you any compliments?â His voice is so gentle, you almost wonder if thatâs how it would sound whispering in your ear. Luckily, you donât actually wonder about that. Not at all, not even a little. âOr is that your job too, like the bill?â
As quickly as he caged you in against the fridge, he moves away and leaves the cool air to rush over your skin, dragging your mind back into reality and away from whatever thoughts it keeps trying to tempt you with. You track his movements towards the island counter as he sets down a glass bowl, marked by condensation and filled with a batter of some sorts.
It's becoming more and more common to catch Bucky pottering around in the kitchen, a recipe on his phone screen and a personalised âKiss the Bakerâ apron â which Sam bought as a joke for his birthday â tied around his waist. Heâll never admit it, but a part of you believes baking helps him relax, to shut off whatever thoughts are floating around in that disturbingly pretty head of his and let him focus solely on measuring, mixing, and making delicious sugary treats. You can hardly complain when heâs gifting you the privilege of an at-home bakery. Fortunately, he gives you plenty of other reasons to complain.Â
âBoys I entertain? Way to make me sound like a stripper,â you huff, sneaking over to dunk a finger into the batter as he turns to grab his coffee. âAnd Iâll have you know, they do pay me compliments.â
Licking your finger clean, you canât fight the humm of approval that creeps up your throat nor the way your eyes slip shut as you savour the cold, tangy sweetness of the cake mix. Something warm presses against your left side as Bucky returns to the island, setting down his mug and a cake tin.
âReally? What kinda things do they say?â Just as you go to double dip, he smacks the top of your hand with a wooden spoon, and you nearly freeze at the contact. For a few short seconds, the factory in your mind goes into lockdown as every single one of your brain cells scramble to not conjure up the image of him smacking that utensil on a very different part of you. âHands off. Itâs a lemon cake, not a lemon and your-dirty-fingers cake.â
You silence your thoughts with a swig of beer before putting a safety distance between Bucky and you, unsure whether to be relieved at his obliviousness to the less than ideal affect heâs having on you, or offended by his complete lack of reaction to being so close to you while youâre all dressed up and waiting for another man to take you out.
Not that you want him to be affected by that, or you in general, though.
Your phone lights up with a text from an unsaved number: im hear, r yu coming down or shuld i com up? You shut it off and stuff it into your purse, deciding it's best to keep a man waiting anyway; heâll appreciate your presence even more once you finally give him it.
Besides, youâve yet to answer Buckyâs question.
âIâd tell you but Iâm too sober to stomach you yelling âHeaven to Betsy!â and giving me a lecture on your medieval dating ethics.â
You earn a genuine laugh, in which his knees bend a little and his head is thrown back, while his vibranium hand winds up splayed across his midriff. The sun is setting beyond the window, lingering shades of orange warmth frame a heavenly glow around Bucky, highlighting a slight curl in his hair and the piercing blue of his eyes. The view is uncomfortably pleasant, so you bring the bottle back to your lips and turn your head away, suddenly utterly fascinated with the eggshell colouring of the kitchen cupboards.
âI think thereâs a leak under the sink,â the comment is absentminded, a meager attempt at steering your mind away from the man and his mixing bowl.
Bucky ignores it and drags you right back to the actual topic at hand.
âThatâs funny,â thereâs a shuffle of tin behind you. You glance back around to find him smoothing batter into the cake mold, wooden spoon clasped in metal fingers spreading the mix evenly. Youâve never noticed how good Bucky is at spreading things. âCause I swear I remember Sam mentioning something about the last guy moaning his own name in your ear.â
Beer shoots to the back of your throat.
In a spurt of coughing, amidst the burning pain of the carbonated liquid dripping out your nose, you hurry over to the sink. Mouth dropped open in a dry heave, you lean into the basin and try to minimize the mess you make in search of a breath. Heat envelops you from behind and a pair of sock-clad feet come into view next to your maroon heels. You briefly register the cool brush of metal against the back of your neck as he tries to tidy back your hair and, while you appreciate the action, you canât help note how completely unnecessary it is. Too distracted to care, your attention shoots straight to the weight of his flesh hand pressing into your lower back. Heavy, warm, large, it pollutes your mind with the knowledge of how it feels to have him soothe your skin â even if there is a layer of silk in the way.
The moment air returns to your lungs, you shoot up straight and ache to step away from him and his wandering-to-all-the-wrong-places hands. The battle against his touch is mute, not even one percent of his strength is put behind the way he grips your forearms and turns you to face him.
Buckyâs eyes scan over you, studying your features. You swallow back whatever feeling brings salivation to your mouth. His thumb reaches towards his own and you watch, transfixed, as a pink tongue darts out to greet it, licking a stripe over the pad of it. A splash of cake batter stains his ring finger. You swallow back more saliva; confusingly, your mouth feels drier than ever. Only when he delicately presses his thumb beneath your eye and swipes over your waterline do you realise youâre teary-eyed.
âSee how clumsy you are?â Thereâs a chastising lilt to his voice that sends blood rushing to your face, and then immediately back down to the overwhelmingly empty space between your legs. âCanât even swallow properly without ruining your mascara.â
You need distance.
You need to move.
You need to leave.
âHeâs here!â The words are almost a gasp as you turn out of his hold. The weight of his gaze trails over your legs as you rush around the kitchen island, fishing your keys out of your purse and rambling out the nerves heâs summoned. âOkay, thereâs some leftover pasta in the fridge if youâre hungry, and youâre welcome to the beers if you get thirsty. Big remote turns on the TV, the little one changes the channel. Behave and take care of the place while Iâm away, okay?â
âQuit talking to me like Iâm some kind of guard dog,â he complains as you pull open the front door and cross one foot over the threshold to safety.
âOh, Iâm sorry!â You cheer back, trailing the door behind you as you go. âI wasnât aware you were going to start contributing rent, Iâll send you my bank details.â
With that, the apartment door slams shut and you head out for a date in which three things will happen: youâll flirt, youâll fuck, and you wonât think about your roommate.
Only one of those things ends up happening.
Itâs not from lack of an offer that you wind up taking a cab back to your apartment. Your date had been nice⌠enough. He complimented your outfit, took a sufficient amount of interest in you, and he even bought you flowers â of course, heâd accidentally left them in his parentâs home. Where he lived. In the basement.
And the thing is, youâre not shallow. Timeâs are tough, the economy sucks, and the world is still adjusting to the sudden return to half its population post-Blip. So you were more than game to play sneak-me-into-your-bed-without-waking-your-parents, but, as the pair of you waited on a taxi to arrive, his hand found your waist and your treacherous mind noticed something it shouldnât.
Buckyâs hand was larger. And warmer. And more welcomed against your skin.
Sick to your stomach by your own thoughts, your night ended with you tip-toeing past the familiar figure sleeping on your couch â definitely not pausing to take in the sheer width of his naked shoulders dangling half-off the cushion â and crawling into bed alone, belly full of Thai and mind full of Winter.
When morning comes, the bedroom door creaks as you pry it open, a fist rubbing sleep out your eye and a yawn announcing your arrival.
âDid you eat my ice cream?â Bucky calls out from somewhere, voice muffled and full of accusation.
Despite barely finishing a glass of wine the night before, thereâs a throbbing pain beginning in your temples and souring your already bitter mood.
âWow, good morning to you too,â you stumble more than walk over to the kitchen, in search of the salvation of ice cold water.
Thatâs where you find him: laid out on his back, grey sweatpants clinging to bent knees, with everything from his shoulders up inside the open cabinet beneath the sink. His arms are inside too, tinkering away at something above his face.
âGood morning. Did you eat my ice cream?â If ever a thing such as a verbal eyeroll were to exist, Bucky would be doing it. From the lack of seeing his eyes, thereâs every chance he is literally rolling them.
Your journey toward the fridge is interrupted by the troubling sight of a glass full of water, a plate hosting a slice of lemon sponge cake, and two miscellaneous white pills that anyone who suffers the unusually cruel punishment of a menstrual cycle is likely familiar with. A post-it note with your name written neatly across it sits next to the unexpected care package.
âSo what if I did?â The painkillers go down effortlessly, though thereâs a lingering chemical taste that has you gulping down an extra sip of water. âWhat are you doing, anyway?â
âI paid for it!â For all his outrage, he doesnât care enough to poke his head out as he chastises you. âYou said there was a leak, so Iâm checking your pipes. Iâm quite good with my hands, you know.â
Is he dense, or is he saying this shit on purpose? The double entendre in his words is glaring, yet you havenât the confidence nor the will-power to address it, to poke the proverbial bear out of fear. Fear of him scolding your dirty mind, or fear of him doubling down on his suggestive wordplay, youâre not quite sure.
You choose to steer clear of the topic and, more importantly, the unexpected twinge in your chest in response to Buckyâs unrequested help.
âAnd I paid for the freezer you left it in, the electricity that kept it frozen, and the apartment you live in,â you donât intend to sound so snappy, like a sulking child fighting against their own self-confessed crimes. âSo I think you can spare me some goddamn ice cream.â
Youâve taken to joining Bucky on the floor, sitting across from him, cross-legged and back pressed against the cabinets that surround the kitchen island. In your lap lies the slice of cake, a mouthful already missing and melting its tangy sweetness onto your tongue. You almost moan, but itâs unclear whether the sugary treat just tastes that good or the visual of the soldier laid out on his back and tinkering away beneath your sink is just so stimulating.
If you mention the strange noise your carâs engine has been making recently, would he fix that too? You can already picture him slicked in sweat and oil, hands on his hips as he stands over the opened hood and assesses whatever the damage is. Youâd have to watch over the whole thing, of course â not out of your own self-interest but on the off chance something goes wrong and Bucky needs help taking off his oil-stained shirt, or pants, or-
âYour date was that good, huh?â You almost jump out of your skin when he speaks.
âHe bragged to me about how he and his college roommates used to play pool,â the pause in your sentences seems to capture Buckyâs attention, coaxing him out from beneath the sink. âUsing a shotgun instead of cues.â
As he sits up, elbows finding rest upon his knees, you canât help but note the five-oâclock shadow heâs sporting. For reasons that have nothing to do with the fraying seams of your sanity, you need him to shave.
To Buckyâs credit, he doesnât laugh. Yes, his lips glitch somewhere between a cheeky grin and a serious frown, but he does not outright laugh like you expect him to. Instead, he nods down at the half-eaten cake and tilts his head â an unspoken question, is it good?, that only weakens his argument about not being a guard-dog. Between the puppy-dog blue eyes and the yearning for approval, you half expect him to sprout a tail and start panting.
Scratch that last thought, actually. Bucky and panting should not coexist in a sentence together, nevermind in your imagination.
âMind feeding me a bite?â Yes, actually, you would mind, but one glance at his fingertips stained in whatever-the-hell is going on with your sink leaves you no choice but to tear off a corner.
Bringing the piece of cake to meet his awaiting mouth, you brace yourself for the tentative scrape of teeth stealing it out of your hold. The delicate brush of his lips enveloping your fingers throws you off your axis, and the challenge in his eyes as they hold contact with your own has your thighs involuntarily squeezing themselves together.
For a moment, you swear you catch him glance down at your lips.
Then you remember the health insurance your job provides does not cover the cost of being institutionalised, so you stop hallucinating and come back to reality where Bucky Barnes is not so much a flirt as he is a pest, a stray animal abandoned at your doorstep by a friend who decided to take advantage of your good-natured heart.
âCan you give me the exact phrasing your date used to describe this shotgun-pool?â The soldier is gone in the blink of an eye, flat on his back again and continuing his attempt to seal the leak.
âWhy?â
âIâm making this list,â he says, and he must shift his hands higher above his head because suddenly the soft cotton of his white shirt has ridden up his torso, presenting your eyes with a golden platter of sun-warmed skin. âIâm calling it âthe manchild filesâ.â
âThatâs not even funny,â neither is the way he inches deeper into the cabinet, exposing not only the glaringly white tan-line delineating where the band of his boxers should be resting but also the beginning dark curls of a happy trail.Â
âWell âthe stupid filesâ sounds so simple, I was worried youâd try to jump into bed with it.â
âAre you seriously about to slut-shame me in my own fucking kitchen?â Whilst slutting yourself out on my floor like your name is Mike and youâre about to show me some magic? is the quiet part you donât say aloud.
âIâm critical but Iâm not hypocritical,â there he does again with that verbal eye-roll. âI wasnât exactly the image of celibacy when I was your age-â
âYay, more grandpa lore!â Your interruption earns you a nudge from his leg, but you know it made him laugh because his shoulders gently shake.
âIâm not slut-shaming you, Iâm taste-shaming. I swear, being useless must be the precursor to having a chance with you.â
âIt is not!â You gasp, yet youâre hardly surprised â Buckyâs not exactly subtle in his disapproval of the men you date.
If there is anything to be thankful for, itâs the alleviation that comes with Bucky shimmying out from the sink again, happy trail redressed and a hand diving into the pocket of his sweatpants. With a dramatic clearing of his throat, he brings his phone up to his face and starts reciting.
âAfter being told you have a nut allergy, Carter B. said Wait, like, youâre allergic to cum?â Youâd always known showing him how to use the notes app would come back to bite you in the ass somehow. âTommy L. walked into a lampost because he got distracted⌠watching a squirrel run up a tree. You almost got stood up by Steve K. because he accidentally locked himself inside his own car. Lee B. asked you-â
âBucky B. is about to lose his other arm if he doesnât shut up.â
âI rest my case,â and he still has the nerve to open his mouth, awaiting another bite of cake.
You cave with no fight and give it to him.
Because youâre a nice person, not because you want to feel his mouth on you again.
Something cool drips onto the bottom of your naked thighs after Bucky reaches over you and grabs at the glass of water, stealing an obnoxiously large gulp; or is it just exaggerated by your stare zeroing in on the way his Adamâs apple bobs as he drinks?
A thought pops into your mind.
âDid you leave these on the counter because you expected me to be hungover?â Your tone is inoffensive, and unoffended, a simple curiosity you need answered.
âYou have a headache, right?â
âUh-huh,â your eyes narrow skeptically.
âYeah, I figured you would,â Bucky takes another sip, more condensation trickling down onto your legs. âYou always have one after eating Thai food.â
Something inside of you stops.
Your heart, or your lungs, or your mind. Your goddamn liver, for all you know.
This is not supposed to be happening. Bucky is not supposed to fix things just because you mentioned it, once in passing and as a scapegoat from focusing too much on him. And he certainly isnât supposed to notice things, useless little factoids that not even you know about yourself until he brings them to light. Hell, heâs not even supposed to still be here, sleeping on your couch and criticising your love life.
When the thing inside of you clicks back into place and starts again, a new weight rests atop your conscience.
Maybe itâs not so bad having a roommate, having Bucky be that roommate. Maybe youâre starting to get used to coming home to the smell of baked vanilla and the signature grouchy look he wears as he asks you about your day, about how your co-worker pissed you off, about why youâre home later than usual and not wearing a jacket out in the cold of winter.
âBy the way,â heâs calling out from beneath the sink again. âYouâll be happy to know Iâm touring an apartment next week.â
âOh.â The bite you just took turns sour in your mouth. You struggle to swallow it down. âThatâs great. Finally! Youâre going, and Iâm staying here, and Iâll have my apartment back to myself. Thatâs⌠Great. Itâs great!â
No, really, itâs great.
âYouâre joking,â a palm on your lower back guides you to the right, just in time to avoid being trampled beneath a cart.
âI wish,â you say, and saunter over to some colourful packaging thatâs captured your eye.
After a moment of inspecting the product in hand from every angle, you put it back on the shelf.
âLet me get this straight,â Bucky pushes the cart along behind you, grabbing that same colourful packaging and dropping it in with the rest of the groceries. âYou lean through his window, kiss him goodbye on the cheek and then he just⌠What, crashed his car?â
âInto a wall with street art of a cliff painted on it,â as you add the most important detail, laughter is already bubbling up your throat. âHe literally crashed his car into a cliff without even getting to switch out of first gear!â
The pair of you make up quite the sight.
An entire morning of tiptoeing through the limbo of delirium, after an entire night spent trying to block out the relentless banging from the upstairs neighbours. The door to your bedroom crawled open some time past four and there was Bucky, head poking through the space and looking rather pleased to find you wide awake â despite his claims of just wanting to make sure you were asleep.
Seated on opposite ends of the couch, both of you found a quiet solace in the otherâs inability to sleep. While a movie marathon played over the TV, the sex marathon above continued. When exhaustion took claim of your body, you drifted off with your arms resting on the armchair and your head resting on your arms. You awoke atop a pillow and beneath a blanket, legs stretched out over the couch and Bucky curled up on the floor by your feet â like any good guard dog would be.
After a botched attempt to sneak past the soldier, only to have him scare the living daylights out of you by grabbing your ankle as you tried to step over him, you both came to the shocking realisation that the fridge was void of any food.
Which brings you to here: standing in aisle 7, laughing an ache into your ribs over yet another one of your failed dates, with a half-filled cart and matching bags forming under your tired eyes.
âI think itâs time we had an intervention about where youâre finding these men,â Bucky says that last word like it's covered in poison, burning his tongue on the way out.
âThey find me!â You say, as he reaches for the box of strawberries you just put down. âAs generous as I am, do you want to maybe slow down on how much shit you load into our cart?â
His hand freezes, the box of red fruit clasped in a confusingly delicate grip of vibranium fingers
âYou picked it up,â his tone is riddled with confusion. âDonât you want them?â
âContrary to popular belief, Iâm not made of money.â
âOkay?â He replies, like itâs the most irrelevant piece of information youâve ever given him â and you once spent an hour ranting to him about the inefficiency of the ink cartridges in your officeâs printer. âIâm paying, so do you want it or not?â
âSince when do you have money? Did your pension finally come through? I mean⌠You are old enough. Also, arenât you literally a vet?â
âYou managed to say all that in one breath, yet you failed to answer a yes or no question.â
A bubble of silence surrounds you both. Bucky blinks, slowly, exaggeratedly. Itâs the perfect opportunity to stare at his face and notice the five o'clock shadow has grown. A gruff âexcuse meâ, followed by a man shoving between you both to grab some strawberries, pops the bubble.
Without a word, you snatch the box and place it in the cart.
Half-way up the fruit aisle, Bucky gets the genius idea to open his mouth again: âYou wanna know what my theory is?â
âNope,â you say, popping the p and glancing back at him over your shoulder. âBut youâre going to tell me anyway.â
He looks vexingly domestic like this, wearing a sweater and pushing your shopping around. Thoughts betray you, wandering off into dangerous territory as they begin to question how others perceive you from the outside.
What do strangers see: two roommates that quarrel like itâs a biological need, or a couple doing their weekly shop? Two strangers forced together by a circumstance named Sam Wilson, or two lovers unwilling to voice that the metal container between them is too much distance?
âI think you date idiots because theyâre idiots.â
âGee whiz, grandpa, thatâs so insightful. I sure do hope Iâm as wise as you when Iâm your age, but Iâll probably just be dead.â You feel the cart meet your back in a gentle bump, a non-verbal warning to cut the teasing.
âDating those incompetent men, itâs likeâŚâ he pauses, searching for the right words, and plucks a bunch of bananas from your hand, dropping them in with your mounting pile of fruit. âJumping out of a plane! You get the thrill of falling but, the moment something a little too real and solid appears on the horizon, you pull out the parachute and, thatâs it, youâre safe. No danger of falling flat on your face and getting your feelings hurt.â
âI donât know when you last jumped out of a plane-â
âRemember that Karli situation a few months ago?â
âBut not ejecting your parachute leads to a little more than just falling flat on your face.â
âSo my metaphor isn't perfect,â Bucky trails off, eyes staring past you and mind lost in thought. You follow his line of sight and find a couple at the end of the aisle, hands intertwined and smiling at each other like theyâre the only two people in the world. An unnamed emotion tugs at the soldierâs lips, but he wonât let it take over his stoic features. âBut you get my point. If you were actually looking for something serious, youâd date someone better than those men.â
Unprompted and unwarranted, his words spear your heart.
Memories replay in your head, a kaleidoscope of the featureless faces you let take you out, dine you, wine you, kiss you. A handful of immeasurables: how many times youâve brushed off mispronounced versions of your name, how many excuses youâve made for the way they talk to you, how many times youâve lowered your own standards to help a man feel desired. In your wake lies a graveyard of failed relationships, with no proper funeral nor mourning.
You swallow back the lump in your throat.
âOkay, psychoanalysing me aside, whatâs left on the list?â You ask, making your way round to Buckyâs side of the cart.
âWell, I still need to write down Jeff G.âs cliff accident.â
âThe other list.â You watch as he struggles to fish out the scrap of paper from his pocket.
âEggs, pasta, feta, toilet roll,â his brows are furled, his eyes are glaring, and with each item he lists off, his words grow more unsure. âGrapefruit? Your handwriting is shit.â
âI was in a rush!â
âAnd sitting on a jack-hammer?â
âGimme that,â you snatch the list, he yields it with no protest. As you scan over the scribbled ink, a frustrating truth comes to light. Buckyâs right, your handwriting is shit. âIs grapefruit even in season?â
âHuh,â itâs the sound of hollow amusement.
âWhat?â
âJustâŚâ His presence looms over you, infecting your senses with the woodsy smell of his cologne and the arduous heat that radiates off of him. When he nods his head to the right, scoffing out a laugh and poking his tongue into his cheek, you find yourself wrestling between temptations of slapping him or pulling him closer. âYou really donât notice whatâs right in front of you, do you?â
Lo and behold, on the right side of the aisle, grapefruits.
You make it through the rest of the shopping list in relative silence, with the occasional side-comment from the super soldier that either rouses a grin onto your lips or has your eyes rolling in faux disagreement. Little by little, you peruse the aisles and fill the cart; and, when Bucky picks out the only ice cream flavour void of nuts, you bite your tongue and choose to say nothing.
âI forgot to ask,â you finally speak, standing in the self-checkout zone and struggling to find something to do with your fidgety hands as Bucky scans each item â you insisted on helping and he insisted heâd get it done quicker alone. âHow did the apartment viewing go?â
âOh. Fine,â you grimace as he says your least favourite f word. âThe current lease isnât up yet, so youâre stuck with me a little longer.â
Are you supposed to feel this relieved?
In theory, you were never supposed to feel anything in regards to Bucky Barnes. In practice, itâs a lot more complicated, a pendulum that seems to swing in constant motion between red hot aggravation and red hot something else you refuse to give a name.
All you know is there are times where you wonder if his back is okay sleeping on the couch, and you contemplate asking him to come meet you during your lunch breaks, and you crave to have the anxious shake in your leg quelled by his daily check-in calls whenever he and Sam go off on another misadventure. Whatever reason lies behind your behaviour, the familiarity of ignorant bliss tempts you away from seeking the answer.
Besides, Bucky will be leaving soon. Heâll no longer be your roommate and youâll both fall out of whatever routine convenience has forced upon you both.
A series of beeps capture your attention.
At the epicentre of the noise stands an elderly woman, grey hair pristinely curled and an outfit that screams Sunday-bests, struggling with the check-out machine. With no employee in sight and no do-gooder fellow customer stepping out of their way to help, the womanâs distress grows with each beep the machine makes at her.
Knuckles brush down your arm, and thereâs Bucky at your side, waiting for you to pay him any mind.
âYou mind handling the rest?â He asks, in that softly-spoken tone of his that would make anyone feel like swooning. Maybe thatâs why it takes you a few moments to notice the wallet heâs holding out to you. âCash is in the back pocket. Iâll be a few minutes, okay? Just finish bagging everything, leave the carrying to me.â
Thereâs no time to get a single word out before youâre staring at the back of his head and watching as he makes his way over to the elderly woman.
For every item you scan, you sneak a glance. The butter beeps onto the screen, and you peek how Bucky has effortlessly become the womanâs personal helper. You pass the strawberries through and reward yourself with the sight of Buckyâs cheeky grin â with the way the elderly lady laughs and swats at his arm, you can only assume heâs made some flirtatious comment. Clicking on the option to pay cash, you nearly give yourself whiplash as you turn to watch them again, Buckyâs just about finishing bagging her groceries while the woman opens her shopping-trolley bag.
Waiting on the receipt to print, your reflection stares back at you on the self-checkout screen: a hue of endearment glowing off your features. The smile quickly melts off your face when you realise that he⌠Oh no.
Bucky is charming.
Part of you has always known he was handsome â youâre stubborn, not blind â yet the sight of him now, all dashing smiles and twinkling eyes playing rescuer to a woman who, despite the difference in their physical ageing, is closer to his own age than you, it troubles you. The acid burn in your throat is not a manifestation of jealousy, no; itâs the queasy feeling of knowing youâve never looked across at a date, caught him in a moment of content, and felt the unyielding desire to be the reason behind it.
Someone clears their throat beside you, a man with a wrinkle in his forehead and an agitated look upon his face, so you quickly excuse yourself and, with plastic handles digging into your fingers, you approach Bucky and the elderly lady.
Upon noticing you, Buckyâs quick to tug the bags out your grip, a scolding already falling off his tongue: âI told you to leave these to me.â
âYeah, well, Mr. Frowny-Magoo over there didnât appreciate me hogging up the cashier,â the comment is meant as nothing more than a lighthearted joke, yet you swear you see something shift in the soldierâs stance, his shoulders tensing and his jaw clenching as he glances back at the stranger.
Fortunately, the elderly woman interrupts whatever heâs contemplating doing to him.
âĐна ŃĐ˛ĐžŃ ĐśĐľĐ˝Đ°?(Is she your wife?)â Sheâs looking between you both expectantly, speaking words you donât understand. âĐŁ ноо НиŃĐž ангоНа. (She has the face of an angel.)â
Whatever she says, it clearly has an effect on Bucky. His head turns to the side, to you, and a visible softness overcomes his gaze as it traces over your face. His shoulders are relaxing, his jaw is unclenching, and heâs switching the bags over to his metal hand, renewing his grip and freeing up the hand that now hangs right by yours, knuckles gracing over your own in a way that feels like a dare, a challenge, a temptation to lace your fingers together.
You clench your fist shut.
âĐŻ СнаŃ. (I know.)â He says, eyes lingering on you a few moments longer than necessary, before heâs back to smiling at the elderly woman.
Halfway home and doubling your pace to keep up with his effortless stroll, curiosity finally gets the better of you.
âWhat did she say back there, that lady you helped?â
A stranger rushes past you both, phone glued to their ear and stressing down the speaker. Bucky takes grip of your arm and tugs you closer to him.
âDo you spend your time getting bumped into when Iâm not around?â His fingers give your arm a squeeze before releasing you. âAnd, if you must know, she said I was the most handsome man sheâs ever seen.â
Little force is put behind the shove you give his shoulder.
Youâre too busy agonising over how much you agree with her.
Bucky leaves.
Not forever, but three weeks away on some stealth mission with Sam sure begins to feel like it.
It happens on a Friday. After the week from hell at work, a friendâs mid-week engagement party, and the unexpected downpour of rain during the journey home, you walk into an unlit apartment and a note stuck to the fridge.
Sam needs me. Be safe, donât bring strangers home. B.Â
The batch of freshly baked cinnamon rolls sweeten your night up, at least.
Thereâs a quiet that always seems to blanket the house whenever you lose Bucky to missions.
Before he was dumped on your front door, youâd been used to living alone and the peaceful silence that came with it. Independence, the ability to need no one and want nothing, a trait of yours that once brought pride, now brings you nothing but the static sound of a muted television and the hum of the microwave spinning a meal fit for one.
Mornings become a ritual of waking later yet leaving earlier, no one is there to distract you from drinking your coffee. Though the workload is the same, somehow the slow drag of hours still finds a way to pass quicker than ever, the revolving doors of the office building spit you back out onto the streets of New York before youâre fully ready. Your evenings waste away, starved of noise and company, while you run out of shows to watch and books to read, and count the hours down until all that silence becomes necessary for your eyes to close and your mind to rest.
Itâs when darkness rules over the sky and the hour is a single digit that the phone finally rings. A blocked number, untraceable, pulling you out the hands of sleep and filling your room with the noise of your ringtone. He never speaks first, not until thereâs an echo down the line of your own sleep stained âhello?â.
âYou can go back to sleep now.â
You never stay on the line long enough to find out how quickly he hangs up after he speaks. Because itâs only ever meant to be a way to let you know heâs safe, alive, somewhere out there doing who-knows-what and stopping who-knows-who. Itâs just an unrequested favour heâs granted you, after the incident in which both he and Sam fell-off the grid for five days and you were nearly rounding up a search party. Heâs not missed a call since, once a day while heâs away.
So, when he doesnât call, itâs only natural that you worry.
The alarm bell rings when you wake up to birds chirping, sun spilling through the crack between the curtains, and not a single missed call nor voicemail awaiting you.
Itâs Saturday and thereâs no work to occupy your mind, so you force down a bagel, toss a tote bag onto your shoulder, and head out to the local market. But thereâs no joy in perusing fruit stands without a six foot soldier trailing your heels and muttering to himself about how exotic fruit has gotten, and how âback in my day you had your apples, your oranges, and your pears.â
You wind up home by noon, and the dwelling begins to grow, still no call.
Thereâs a weight on your chest, and a balloon of anxiety that grows in your throat, and an unwarranted agitation burning at your skin as you read over his note again, still very much stuck to the fridge and taunting you â Be safe, says a man who clearly canât take his own advice.Â
Then, why should you?
You agree to go on a date, one youâve been dancing around agreeing to for a few weeks yet reach for it the moment you decide youâre not pleased with the way Buckyâs lack of a call is ruining your well-earned free time.
And, hey, the guyâs not a complete loser this time. On paper, at least. Heâs handsome, tall, and an athlete â ex-athlete, really, but you donât bother to point that out while he talks about the gymnastic studio he runs. Most importantly, heâs eager to call a cab and get you home, screw Buckyâs warning. If you want to bring a stranger into your home, youâll do it.Â
Brooding, uncalling soldier be damned!
After stumbling through the dark of your apartment into your bedroom, and fumbling with your bra long enough for you to grow tired and just take it off yourself, you and Mister Gymnast tumble into the sheets for a performance so lacklustre, it warrants taking all his medals away. At least your date seems to enjoy himself, spilling onto your stomach and falling asleep the minute his head hits the pillows.
âI finished,â last you checked, he hadn't even started.
You lie awake, staring at the ceiling, and try to will the phone to ring. Encased by a strangerâs snoring and a guilty feeling, you let Lady Sleep whisk you away. When your eyes open next, morning has broken and youâre alone in bed with a remnant trace of warmth on the sheets. But the silence is finally gone.
Beyond your door you hear the faint thud of footsteps, the ding of the fridge being opened, the whistle of the kettle. You almost trip in your rush to get dressed, and nearly rip the hinges off the door as you tear it open. Then the smile falls from your face.
âYouâre up!â Everyoneâs favourite gymnast is there to greet you, a mug in hand as he goes to pull you in for a kiss. The way you swerve is automatic, unplanned, leaving his lips to land on your cheek. âUhh, I was hoping youâd sleep a little longer, I wanted to bring you breakfast in bed but-â
âHe couldnât figure out how to boil the kettle.â
And thereâs Bucky, leaning back against the kitchen counter with his arms crossed over his chest and a smug look on his face. Aside from the butterfly stitches above his left brow, he looks unharmed. Fine, even. Dressed in all black, with a t-shirt thatâs hugging his frame a little too tightly for your liking, the double-combo of his dog-tags and vibranium arm on display. Perfectly safe for a man who couldnât call.
Your date laughs and sheepishly scratches the back of his head before you get the chance to speak.
âYour brother was kind enough to help me.â Itâs unclear who laughs first: Bucky or you. âWhatâs so funny?â
âOh, nothing, nothing, justâŚâ Bucky says, shaking the laughter away with a nod of his head. âIn what world do me and her look related?â
âWait, if youâre not her brother then, are you-â Fifty shades of horror spill over the gymnastâs face, his head darting between looking over at Bucky and back at you. âHoly shit, is he your boyfriend?â
âHusband, actually,â the soldierâs all too quick-witted, pushing off the counter and reaching for a mug of brewing coffee. âBut donât worry, weâre open. What do you think of our kitchen lights, by the way? My wife here likes them dim.â
Dumb as he is, your date tilts his head up to inspect the light fixtures.
âOh, theyâre nice!â
That does it for you.
âBucky, shut up!â You snap, finger pointed over at the menace whoâs biting back a smirk and stirring away at his mug, face as innocent as sin. Is this some twisted version of revenge, a punishment for bringing a stranger home? Youâd prefer the punishment to be a little more⌠hands on. Preferably in the form of your slapping that twinkle out of his eyes. âHe is not my boyfriend, or my husband. He is the bum that lives on my couch.â
âYou see how she treats me, Vince?â
âItâs Lance,â the gymna- Lance corrects him.
Moving towards the kitchen, your eyes check over your roommate once more, as though they expect some previously unseen injury to make an appearance on his skin. Come the end of your search, youâre left looking into a face that is sporting a split brow and a cruel level of entertainment from the situation at hand.
Thereâs a relief to having him back, and itâs wrestling with the exasperating emotions a single missed call conjured up.
âWhat are you doing here, anyway? Arenât you and Sam still meant to be⌠I donât know, on a homoerotic getaway, fighting crime?â The questions fire out of you as you slip into one of the islandâs stools.
âWe finished early,â Bucky appears by your side as though from thin air, hand clasping the back of your seat and pushing you in closer to the counter top.
âAww, donât worry, big boy, it happens to the best of you,â you tease, an empathetic pat against his shoulder.
The mockery backfires when you notice his brows shoot up and his stare shifts towards your date, whoâs too busy trying to open the sugar jar to notice the dig at his own sexual inabilities.
Wait, when exactly did Bucky get home?
âHow do you take your coffee?â One-Thrust-Lance asks you over his shoulder.
Before you can answer, a cup is nudged into your grasp and Bucky looks over you with triumph, metal fingers reaching out to drag over a plate of freshly-baked cookies. The smell of warm vanilla pairs well with the soft musk of his cologne, your eyes nearly roll back inhaling it.
âMmm,â one sip of your coffee is all you need to know itâs perfect, made exactly to your taste. âCoffee and baked goods⌠I knew I kept you around for a reason.â
In lieu of any verbal response, the soldier takes to dunking one of the cookies into your mug before stealing a bite out of it. You watch as he chews on the sweet treat, head nodding in approval at his own skills. After he dips a second time, you expect him to take another bite, only to find him offering the chocolate chip goodness up to your mouth. Two eyes, blue as any winter, stare encouragingly while you sink your teeth into the cookie.
Heaven couldnât taste any sweeter, you think, as the perfect blend of coffee stained dough and the sharpness of the dark chips flood your tastebuds.Â
âSo messy,â Bucky tuts quietly, his right hand grabbing a steady hold of your chin while his thumb swipes away the crumbs dusting the corner of your mouth.
That thing inside of you stops again as you watch him bring his hand up to his own mouth, a pink tongue poking out to lick his thumb clean.
Arousal thrums through your blood, a pulsing rhythm that spreads straight to your clit. A squeeze of your thighs brings momentary reprieve, yet the ache fights back with renewed force, drying up your throat and knocking the sense right out of you.
Squirming where you sit, your legs switch position until one foot finds itself tucked beneath the opposite thigh, the heel of it sitting perfectly against your clothed core. You find no mercy, no chance to roll your hips forward in search of the balm only friction will bring to your burning skin. Instead thereâs simply Bucky, eyes trailing down the length of you and settling on your short-clad legs. As though his behaviour is not cruel enough, he wets his bottom lip with his tongue
âYou like that?â More than youâll ever know, you almost scream until the logical side of your brain takes the wheel again and you notice him pointing down at the half-eaten cookie. Of course heâs enquiring about his baking skills, what else would this scrambled-egg-for-brains senior citizen be talking about? âAre you gonna make me wait all day for an answer?â
Something smashes behind Bucky, just in time to startle away the racy thoughts from your mind.
âMy bad!â Your date â who you damn near forgot was even here â is apologising, bending at the waist and trying his best to collect the fractured pieces of a mug off the floor. âWhere do you guys keep your dustpan?âÂ
Bucky pushes away from the island counter, taking the smell of his cologne with him; if you werenât fully back to your rational senses, youâd miss it.
âIâll get it, Vince, you just stand there and look pretty.â
âOkay!â Lance, it seems, is just as eager to please the ex-assassin as you almost were a moment ago.
You decide you need to move, to stand up, to stretch your legs. This has nothing to do with the lingering effect of Buckyâs antics, nor the damp patch gathering against your panties.
Slipping off the kitchen stool, you work on chugging down gulps of coffee with every intention of dumping the empty mug into the sink, dashing to your bedroom, and conjuring up the best plan you can come up with to get not only yourself, but also the trash you brought in with you last night out of the apartment and away from an infuriating roommate.
Something on the floor derails you, however, dragging you away from the path to sanctuary. The tiniest red petal, lonesome and neglected upon the cold tile. Three steps over, and thereâs another petal. One step until the next petal. You follow the breadcrumb trail all the way over to the garbage can where, with one gentle push of a button, the lid opens up to reveal the unexpected, thrown away like a dirty secret.
A crumpled bouquet of roses.
Everywhere you turn, thereâs tension.
In your neck, from sleeping at an unfavourable angle. Within your stomach, where a queasy feeling keeps threatening to spew your guts out onto the bathroom floor. Between you and Bucky, a foreign energy thatâs grown over the course of this last week, during which youâve been avoiding eye contact and his stare is full of accusation.
Retracing your steps, they take you back to the moment Lance left the apartment and you found yourself drowning in Buckyâs company for the first time in weeks. He was barely half-way through poking fun at the choices you made in his absence â most of his focus being on the blubbering fool you brought into your bed â when your patience ran thin and snapped.
Now here you are, bearing the consequence of your own short temper, wiping lipstick off your teeth whilst mentally preparing yourself to go on a second date, planned sheerly out of spite and the need to prove a point.
Poor Lance is none the wiser to his role as pawn in your game of âScrew You, Barnes!â.
âEverything okay in there?â Think of the devil and he shall knock on the bathroom door, apparently. âThought you had your big date at seven.â
The gymnastâs text thread stares back at you, a wall of grey bubbles. You have to swallow down the lump in your throat to speak, âHeâs not answering my calls.â
âYouâve been stood up? By that loser?â Thereâs every chance your storm of emotions is impeding you from thinking straight, but you swear you almost hear a hint of disbelief in Buckyâs voice. Disgust, even.
Thereâs no point dwelling on the thought.
After a quick wash of your hands, you pry the door open and watch as the soldier leaning against it nearly topples forward before catching himself against the frame. Heâs entirely too close for comfort, close enough for you to notice the different shades of blue in his eyes.
âMaybe he broke his phone?â The lack of assurance in your voice has you cringing, the fear of being called out suddenly doubling.
Bucky scoffs, arms crossing over his chest.
âMore likely he forgot to charge it.â
Is that what happened to him? Is that why he left you to dwell in the dark over his whereabouts and wellbeing, rendering the usual distraction of a night-time companion useless? Only for you to find him the following morning, right as rain and as annoying as ever, standing in the kitchen and casting judgement-filled glances at your overnight guest?
Thinking about it, about him, brings on an onslaught of anger youâre not willing to address. Not right now.
âShut up!â It comes across as less independent girlboss and more petulant child, but youâre too busy noticing how firm his chest feels under your palms as you push past him out of the bathroom to care.
Prying open the freezer, you hear the soft click of the toilet door closing. Good, you think, heâs gone away. Out of sight, out of mind. Even if it is only for the short time it takes him to do his business.
That time ends up being even shorter than expected, for only minutes after youâve dug your spoon into the creamy, frozen goodness of vanilla fudge, the object of both your fascination and your torture is making his way towards the kitchen.
âDidnât I tell you to stop eating my ice cream?â
âDidnât I tell you to move out?â Mouth full of vanilla, you shoot him a toothy grin and relish in the grimace it earns you.
Satisfaction melts away when Bucky invades your personal space, metal arm reaching over head and pulling open a cupboard.
âDonât do that,â you swat at the vibranium bicep, a futile fight that simply makes you all too aware of how smooth it feels beneath your fingertips.
âDo what?â Brain of a caveman, Bucky continues his rustling through the cabinet behind you, features as stoic as a rock as though heâs none the wiser to how your chests brush against one another with each exhale.
âThat,â another swat at his arm, though this time he yields. The space between you doesnât grow, however. It worsens, his attention fully falling onto you now. âReaching over me like you canât just ask me to move.â
âFine, if it really bothers you that much,â are the last words you hear before youâre airborne, two hands squeezing at your hips and moving you two steps over and out of the way.
The soldier doesnât struggle, not even for a moment, the serum thatâs altered his DNA leaving him primed and ready to manoeuvre the most steadfast of objects. Manhandle them, too. Pick them up, turn them over, pin them down, make them scream⌠Objects, of course, or those big, bad guys he and Sam are always chasing after.
The anger in you is renewed, burning brighter than a star ready to die. You shove his hands off of you and secure another step of distance between you.
âWell arenât you a ray of sunshine today.â With the rate heâs going at, one would think the soldier makes a living out of deepening the frown on your face. âIs this princessâ first time being stood up?â
Youâd slap him, right here and now, if it didnât mean moving closer and touching his skin; the current top two of your âThings To Not Doâ list.
Luckily, the tub of ice cream sits just within reach and your eager fingers take grip of it, sliding it over the counter towards yourself. A mouthful of coolness precedes the burning question on your tongue, âWhy didnât you call?â
âAre you serious?â Now heâs the one scowling and taking a step closer.
âDeadly,â you dig the spoon back into the carton. âNow answer the question.â
âYouâre pissy with me for not calling, meanwhile Iâm the one who came home to some asshole in your bed?â
Heâs moving closer. You try to step backwards.
âYeah, well, if youâd called like you were supposed to, I wouldnât have ended up with said asshole.â
Buckyâs eyes narrow, âOh, so now itâs my fault that you date degenerates?â
The cackle that escapes you could break the soundbarrier.
âWow! Everybody, give it up for another original dig at my love-life from James Buchanan Barnes!â Voice dripping with seven layers of venomous sarcasm, you give three slow claps of your hands. The cynical smile that overcomes your face feels borderline deranged, something plucked right out of a horror movie. âOkay, yeah, I date losers! Happy? Jesus Christ, Bucky, what do you expect me to do? Itâs not exactly like thereâs anyone else lining up to date me.â
âI am!â His voice is raised, his eyes are wide, his chest is heaving. âMaybe Iâm the biggest idiot, rushing home last week to surprise you. Even brought you flowers. I just⌠Fuck!â
You donât move, donât blink, donât breathe.
Bucky runs a hand through his hair, knuckles going white as he pulls on the tresses.
There it is again in his eyes, the accusation.
Even though heâs shaking his head, he steps closer.
The kitchen counter is right behind you, thereâs nowhere for you to run.
The heels on your feet almost give out beneath you, you try to steady yourself with your hands.
Bucky has other plans and grips both your forearms.
âI am,â he repeats, softer. Slower. The icy exterior of accusation melts away to reveal vulnerability.
A hand meets your cheek and holds you like you are glass, breakable beneath his touch. Your heartâs in your throat, and thereâs a current of electricity running down to your toes, and that neglected hunger in your loins creeps in again. His eyes search your face, while his thumb gently swipes over your bottom lip, prying it out an involuntary capture from your teeth.
Itâs unclear who reaches for who first, whether he dips and takes possession of your mouth, or you grab him by the collar of his shirt and lay your claim over him. In a matter of seconds, a tentative press of lips against lips divulges into loss of breath, tongues in mouths, and fevered kisses.
The soldier kisses with starvation, like he has walked through the desert of loneliness and at last stumbled upon an oasis, like a bee seeking every last drop of nectar from a flower dying off with the spring, like a body clings to sleep in the throes of exhaustion. Itâs a necessity, a human need, a matter of survival to keep your lips interlocked.
The hand on your face holds you steady as he tilts himself deeper into the kiss. Noses brush against the swells of cheeks, eyelids rest close, feet shuffle closer in search of eradicating the crevice of distance between you two. Metal fingers curl around the nape of your neck, a gesture you reciprocate while your spare hand lays flat-palmed against his beating chest. One of his legs winds up between yours and, as he shifts weight from one foot to another, thereâs the faintest relief of friction against your cunt and a whine gets caught between your throat and Buckyâs eager mouth.
Despite how you chase his lips, he pulls back and grants you the sight of pure endearment.
âLook at you, whining already. Whereâs all that fire gone?â Itâs practically a whisper, spoken with fascination. âOr were you just needing Old Bucky to touch you, huh?â
Second-hand embarrassment burns the tips of your ears, while your own unspoken agreement to his question has your stomach twisting up. Survival instincts, that have never been much of a friend, scream at you to flee this feeling, to throw away Pandoraâs box before you risk fully opening it and having it consume you.
Bucky intercepts your attempt to push out of his arms.
âAh, ah, get back here. Not done kissing you,â his words divulge into a barely coherent mumble as he reconnects your lips.
Beneath the heat of his kiss, the discomfort in your chest turns to ashes. Because, while instinct tells you to run from danger, this is Bucky.
Bucky who fixes cupboard hinges, and sleeps with both eyes on the door. Bucky who carries all the shopping, and holds every door. Bucky who calls to hear your voice while heâs away endangering his life, and brings home the silliest trinkets he finds on missions. Bucky who wakes you when you miss your alarm, and knows if youâve had a bad day simply from looking at your face.
How could you possibly be in danger when it comes to him?
While youâre overcome with epiphany, heâs taken to tracing his lips over the slope of your jaw and mouthing at the skin of your neck. Itâs when he lifts you up onto the kitchen counter that your wandering mind is reeled back in, to the physical present where your legs rest on either side of the soldier and the prized possession of vanilla fudge once again sits within reaching distance.
âAre you stealing my ice cream right now?â His lips tickle your collarbone as he speaks, barely a moment after youâve scooped the spoon into your mouth.
âIâm warm, and it's melting,â his head pops up just in time to accept the spoonful of vanilla you deliver. Thereâs a glow in his eyes, one that has you questioning if it's been there all along or if it's a consequence of touching your skin. âDonât want it to go to waste.â
His mouth is on yours again, a rush of three chaste kisses seared against you before he replies, âThen letâs cool you down.â
At a teasingly slow pace, you feel his fingers tug down your dressâ straps, leaving the silky fabric to slip down your frame and pool around your hips. Under the golden hue of the kitchen lights, his gaze studies your bare skin like it's a work of art, an eighth wonder of the world, the greatest poem never written woven into it. Yet it still manages to pale against the face that overcomes him as he removes a final layer of lace.
Unlike Vince, he has no trouble removing your bra.
âSo responsive,â he talks as though only his ears are meant to hear it, his vibranium palm gently taking hold of your left breast and rolling the hardening nipple between two fingers.Â
Heâs studying your reaction, bewildered by the goosebumps spreading over your flesh.
When was the last time he truly touched another person? Weeks, months, years, decades? The thought of his hands on a faceless shape makes you sick. First with envy, and then with hypocrisy, an amalgamation of all the men youâve taken to bed flashing before your eyes. But none of them ever touched you like you were porcelain, and none of them looked at you like you held the key to eternal pleasure. None of them were Bucky.
A chill runs down your spine and a gasp rips out your chest as Bucky swipes the spoon over your skin, leaving a trail of ice cream atop your right breast for his tongue to follow. He plants a garden of kisses along the swell of your chest before pulling away to give the left side equal treatment, another creamy river along your skin for him to clean up.
Moving at their own volition, your hips grind gently against his steady figure as Bucky coats your nipple in vanilla, moaning into your chest as he lays claim over you with his mouth. Spoiling you in his kisses, the soldier begins to yearn for friction, meeting the careful roll of your hips with his own.
Your hand finds his hair and his stare meets yours, intense and all-consuming as he releases your nipple with a scrape of his teeth. You want to soothe his kiss-swollen lips but theyâre already wrapping themselves around your other breast, not even patient enough to lather you in the vanilla goodness this time.
Instead, the coldness on your skin stems from metal fingers, perched on your thigh and creeping up the length of it, inch by tormenting inch. A hesitant hand wraps around a vibranium wrist, tightening its grip before you begin guiding his touch inwards, upwards, to where you need it most. Bucky's stronger, more resistant, and holds off your interceptance, left hand continuing its intended path beneath the skirt of your dress and grabbing hold of your naked waist.
Heâs everywhere, all over you. Mouthing at your chest, gripping at your hip, rutting into your pussy. The sweet drag of his bulge over your clothed core sires a wet patch against your thong and has your fingers tugging on the roots of his hair, winning you the hair-raising hum of a groan against your breast.
Desperate to feel more, you renew your efforts to lead his hand to the space between your legs and are met with a shake of his head.
âNo,â he mutters, and robs you of a hand beneath your dress, using it instead to cradle your jaw while his lips skim over the shell of your ear. âWanna feel you.â
The warmth of flesh brands your thigh, Buckyâs right arm now leading the charge beneath the silky fabric. With bated breath, you brace yourself against his strong chest and try not to squirm in anticipation of his touch. With one final squeeze at your inner thigh, the soldierâs hand engulfs your clothed cunt and his breath cracks in your ear, a strangled out, feral noise that has your toes curling.
âSheâs so wet, darling,â his voice has you delirious, breathy against your ear. His fingers flex against your pussy and a moan catches in your throat. âYou gonna let me touch her?â
Something about the way heâs speaking to you, the words heâs choosing, makes you want to fall apart. Your sex-life has always been liberal, you know what it is to have a manâs hands all over you, trying to take ownership of parts of you he thinks belong to him. Men who take, and take, and take, until there is nothing left of you to give, and not once do they care to win your favour, to plead for permission. But BuckyâŚ
âPlease, say I can touch her, wanna give her what she needs,â heâs pleading for it, begging for you â wrecked and desperate, breath run ragged from no more than the relief of rolling his groin against your thigh. âPromise Iâll be real sweat, make you feel good.â
Too caught up in his own head, he doesnât notice you nodding, until youâre granting him salvation verbally, âTouch me, Bucky.â
He doesnât hesitate, doesnât waste time on taking off your underwear, just moves it to the side and drags the tip of his fingers down the inseam of your pussy. You hear it, more than you feel it, the moment he touches your opening, a sharp inhale at your ear telling you heâs exactly where he wants to be.
As his middle finger slips in, itâs hard to tell which of you reacts louder, both a mess of guttural moans. Once it's fully sheathed within you, he curls it and presses against your soaked walls, grinning against your skin at the reaction it coaxes out of you.
âDonât hold back,â he chastises you as you bite back another pathetic whimper, a second finger slipping into you. âLet me hear what Iâm doing to you.â
He must have a magic touch, youâre sure of it. Thick fingers that fuck into you at a steady pace, curling and teasing at that world-bending spot inside you, while his thumb makes itself useful against your clit, a firm force for your bucking hips to grind up into while you chase the pleasure heâs unleashing on you. In a matter of minutes, the room is alive with your melodic moans, Buckyâs endless hums of approval, and the damn-right embarrassingly loud squelch of him fingering your drooling cunt.
You make the mistake of letting your eyes slip shut, relinquishing yourself to the way he touches you with the rough hands of a soldier yet the delicate stroke of a musician playing his favourite instrument. He must feel the shift in you, for heâs instantly prying his face away from your neck and tightening the metal grip on your jaw, fingertips digging into squished cheeks.
âLook at me,â his words are both a command and a plea. An order you follow and a prayer you answer, eyelashes fluttering open to find his face in front of your own. His lips are a hard line, his brows furrowed in disapproval, and thereâs a vein threatening to split down the middle of his forehead, but his eyes. His eyes are affection incarnate, two pools of lust and worship that pose no threat of drowning. âDo you want to cum?â
Never has a more needless question been asked.Â
You nod into the force of his vibranium hand, but thatâs not what he wants, frown deepening.
âSay it,â needy, helpless, spoken like heâs the one on the brink of ecstasy. âPlease.â
âBucky,â it feels good to say his name like this, brain melting into mush and heart racing in your chest. âI want you to let me cum.â
âLet you?â Heâs offended by the word, fingers burying impossibly deeper inside of you while he continues to stare you down. âI beg of you.â
No warning precedes the coil in you snapping. The muscles in your core tense, your back arches into his broad figure, your pussy squeezes at Buckyâs fingers with a death grip. He guides you through it, ignoring the cramp in his wrist in favour of continuing to fuck his hand into you, a smile finally cracking over his face as he watches you fall apart atop the counter, nothing but Bucky, Bucky, Bucky surrounding you.
He tries to give you reprieve, a moment to breathe and savour the buzz in your veins, the hand around your jaw shifting to stroke at your cheek while the hand between your legs soothes you with featherlight touches.
You donât let him, hand pawing down his torso and gripping at the belt of his jeans, delighting in the familiar clang of a buckle being undone, nimble digits that tear leather out its loop and tug down his zipper. Buckyâs bringing his lips back against yours just as you palm at his bulge, his tongue licking into your mouth when you finally release him from the confines of his boxers.
Fingers coated in your own slick grip at your thigh while the soldier makes it his mission to steal your breath, rendering you blind to the sight of his cock. But you can feel it. The weight of it in your hand, the burn of want ingrained in his skin. The width of it, and the length of it, and the perfectly mushroomed tip that has him keening into your touch as your pointer finger drags over the head.
âIs this what I do to you?â Still lost in the maze of your orgasm, you manage to gain back crumbs of your usual confidence watching Bucky fall mute. When he merely nods, you play him at his own game, fingers back in his hair and forcing him to look you in the eye. âSay it.â
He doesnât.
He says something much better.
âDâyou even realise how many nights Iâve laid on that fucking couch, hard as a rock and willing you to come out your room?â
âThatâs your generation's problem, you know?â You whisper teasingly, incapable of fighting off your own laughter. âYou swear more than you breathe.â
âCâmere,â heâs rolling his eyes and pulling you in, kissing you like itâs been a milenia and not a minute, hand nudging yours out the way to take a hold of himself.
Your teeth graze over his tongue as he drags the head of his cock through your folds, and he groans into your mouth before pulling back. Resting his forehead against yours, heâs teasing you both as his tip brushes over your hole before continuing its rutt up, bumping against your sensitive clit.
A wicked voice takes control of your mouth.
âLance would have fucked me by now.â
âVince would have cum by now, too,â heâs still rocking his hips, no sense of urgency behind the way he soaks himself in you.
Meanwhile, youâre a handful of seconds away from screaming at him to just stick it in already.
âYou- Oh!â Prayers answered, hallelujah, his cock finally sinks into you. Itâs a shallow thrust, barely more than the tip before heâs retreating, yet it's enough to mess with your head. âYou heard us?â
âUnfortunately,â and he means it, the most subtle of pouts forming on his lips before he feeds himself a little deeper into your pussy. âIâm not great when it comes to timing.â
âI only slept with Lance because you-â Right on cue, he fucks into you even deeper and your words dissappear before they can reach your tongue.
âNew rule,â a hand rests on your knee and encourages you to spread your legs wider. âNo speaking another manâs name when youâre in bed with me.â
âTechnically, this is the kitchen counter-â The bastard does it again, cuts you off with his dick â if it didnât feel so damn good, youâd slap him.
Heâs bottomed out at last, buried himself fully in your cunt. Hands snake around your waist, one palm flattening against your lower back while the other rests a little further up and guides your spine to arch into him, closer, like thereâs anymore space left between you to devour.
His pace is still slow, teasing. A toe-curling drag of his cock out of you, letting you feel every ridge and vein before his hips promptly snap back into you and send your eyes rolling back, your head falling back â and smacking loudly against the cupboard door behind you.
Bucky freezes, one hand quick to cradle the back of your skull while his eyes scan over you.
âJesus, doll, you okay?âÂ
âPlease donât stop,â you plead, ridiculously unfazed by the faint ache when youâve got him inside of you.
Even though he rolls his eyes, he complies.
âMight have just given you a concussion and all you care about is getting fucked?â He asks, like you could possibly care about anything else when his arms are hooking themselves under your knees and rucking you up off the counter, away from any rogue cupboard that means you harm.
If anything, youâll gladly shoulder the burden of any possible injury, if it means being granted the sight of his biceps tensing as he effortlessly stands there and fucks you down onto him. Were you in any sane state of mind, you wouldnât think it, but god bless that super soldier serum.
âYou can give me a cockcussion for all I care,â head perched on his shoulder, you watch your nails sink into the fabric of his shirt and wish it would disappear and gift you the naked view of his back.
âAdding that to the list,â he whispers against your forehead, pressing a kiss against it.
Legs bent at the knee, you watch how, with one particularly deep thrust, they bounce at either side of him and one of your heels clatters to the floor.
The room pivots as Bucky turns, you still in his arms and your ankles locked behind his back. At first, you believe heâs aiming to move things into the bedroom, where the only thing your head will be hitting is the mattress when he lays you down. He proves you wrong, however, the cold press of marble against you once more as he settles you down onto the kitchen island.
Much to your chagrin, he slips out of you, cock now sitting pretty against his clothed abdomen and glistening with the sheen of your essence. In the blink of an eye, the soldier is sinking to his knees, metal finger reaching back for your fallen shoe.
The scene plays out like something stripped right out of a morally dubious, low quality pornography retelling of Cinderella, in which Prince Charming has his dick out, Cinderellaâs gown is half-way off, and the infamous glass slipper is just a pair of heels you bought on sale.
Bucky is delicate and slow, mouth tickling at your inner knee as he secures the shoe in place. He rests back on his haunches and fully takes in the sight of you, perched upon the counter, hands splayed out on marble, a tangle of silk around your waist, lips parted in search of steady breathing.
Thereâs an intensity to his gaze, burrowing itself beneath your skin and becoming part of your bloodstream, spreading throughout your body. It makes you want to hide, flee like you do best, but Bucky has other plans.
âThe shoes stay on, but this,â Buckyâs fingertips tug lightly on the hem of your dress, exposing a sliver of new skin. âI need this gone. Am I allowed to take it off?â
There he goes again, face the model of innocence while he asks for permission to your body. If you werenât already dripping against your panties, you would be now. Luckily, he doesnât push you to verbalise your agreement this time, more than eager to comply the moment you nod your head.
You wiggle your hips as he pulls the fabric out from beneath you, his grip snagging on the waistband of your thong and dragging it away alongside the dress. When your ass cheeks press back down onto the cool of the counter, reality hits you like a freight-train: youâre completely nude, with Bucky on his knees before you, in the middle of the kitchen.
âBuck,â the y of his nickname disappears as you feel him peppering kisses of your leg, inching that little bit higher each press of his mouth. Squeezing your eyes shut, you try to remember where your rational thoughts are stored, conjuring up images of friends, of Sam sitting at this very surface. âI donât think we should⌠I mean, people eat off this counter!â
âDonât worry,â reaching the threshold of your thigh, his kisses seem to speed up, that sauve and composed exterior chipping away to reveal a man who no longer wants to take his time with you. âI intend to eat.â
No sooner than the words reach your ears, Bucky swipes his tongue up your pussy and any fight left in you melts away as you turn to putty beneath his touch, soft and malleable, willing to sit there and take whatever he wants to give.
Give, he most certainly does. Lips latch onto your clit, hands hold your squirming hips in place, tongue dances over your most delicate areas before dipping into your entrance. He drinks from you like youâre the sweetest honey, the richest of red wines, the Holy Grail promising an eternal youth to a man whose time was stolen from him.
âYou should see her, doll,â thereâs a rasp in Buckyâs voice, a feral undertone to the growl that rests in the back of his throat. One hand tugs his shirt off while the other snakes between your legs, two fingers spreading your lips open in an obscene gesture that has you clamping down on your bottom lip. âSheâs drooling for me, all pretty and wet.â
Dropping both your legs over his shoulders, he tugs you right to the edge of the counter and dives back in. You feel his nose bump against your clit and your hand grabs onto your thigh, nails piercing into flesh as your mouth sings a whined symphony.
Vibranium curls around your wrist, prying harm away from your own skin and silently imploring you to hurt him instead, nestling your fingers back into his hair. Heâs renewing his effort, a touch thatâs more determined than ever to make you fall apart, on his knees and worshipping the altar of your body â fealty and devotion seared into each lap of his tongue, each brush of his lips, each stroke of his fingers.
Who are you to reject his piety? You welcome it, with closed fist and glassy eyes. The soldier shudders â a full-body shiver that shakes down his spine â as the point of your heel digs into his back and your fingers squeeze at his scalp, no mercy shown as you lose yourself in the throes of lust.
When you cum, a silent scream rips through your chest and a burning-too-bright white light turns you blind. He doesnât let up, tongue still buried in your convulsing walls as your thighs clamp around his head and your feet kick at his back, shoes flying elsewhere into the kitchen. He pays none of it any mind, content to prolong your orgasm for as long as youâll allow him, slowly rising off his knees with two hands pinning you back against the counter while he continues to feast on your pleasure.
âJa-mes,â a fractured call of his name is all it takes for him to stop, pupils more black than blue as they stare down at the picture you paint atop the counter: teary-eyes, swollen lips, heaving chest.
Heâs hardly the image of composure either, red lines along the expanse of his back, hair a tousled mess, the scruff on his face covered in a sheen of your juices. And, yet, never have you wanted to kiss him so bad.
All you manage, after minutes of floating atop the cloud of your peak, is a cheeky grin and a comment that makes him roll his eyes: âFor a fossil, youâre pretty kinky.â
âWar camps arenât exactly known for being fun,â as he speaks, he slowly lowers your legs off his shoulder. âYou find ways to keep yourself entertained.â
âBet you were quite the pleaser, huh?â Trying your best to play it cool, you lay your head fully back on the counter and stare up at the ceiling, praying he doesnât notice the hypocritical pit forming in your stomach as you listen to your own words. âProbably had all the prettiest nurses fighting over who gets to tend to your poor, aching, throbbing co-â
âJealousy looks cute on you,â he interrupts, amused, as his hands soothe over your hips.
âIâm not jealous!â You exclaim, barely believing yourself.
One hand reaching out for him, you watch your fingers intertwine with the prosthetic digits and let him tug you back up, chest to chest when his hand finds your cheek.
âI was,â his confession is crooned whilst staring right into your eyes, the tiniest up-turn to his mouth. âEverytime you walked out the door to go date a new loser.â
âWho knew,â your voice is as gentle as his own, nonchalant as a finger dances down the well-defined muscles of his abdomen and elicits a groan out of him. âAll along I had my own loser at home.â
Bucky opts for silence as your hand reaches his groin and pays no mind to his cock, red-tipped and leaking, flushed against his stomach. Youâre more interested in his jeans â in removing them, to be exact. It doesnât take much, a sharp tug at the hem before theyâre slipping off, meeting restraint as they cling to his muscled thighs and implore him to finish the job on your behalf, shucking them off blindly to where the rest of your clothes lie.
You must have saved a village in a past life to be rewarded with the view of a completely nude Bucky Barnes, skin stained by lust and laced with gold beneath the kitchen light. You must have saved the rest of the world, too, to watch how his eyes roll back and his mouth falls slack when you take his length in hand and give one slow pump of your wrist, releasing it just to watch it slap back against his abdomen.
As you reach for his dick again, his hand secures itself around your own and guides it up and down the length of it. Once, twice, thrice, till heâs breathing heavily and dripping in pre-cum.
âYou must be close,â a statement you make with his own bodily reaction as evidence to back it up, yet thereâs still room for doubt â to what extent does that soldier serum interfere with him?
âPut me back down on my knees and Iâll cum to the taste of you,â the soldier certainly makes a tempting offer, one that it almost pains you to refuse.
Almost, if you hadnât already felt the sweet stretch of him inside you.
âPretty sure putting you back down on your knees might be considered elder abuse, ole buddy.â
âMy age may be a hundred and six but-â
âExactly my point.â
âBut my body isnât,â heâs using that stare of his, the one Sam always warns you about, while youâre full-on cheesing, a rush of adrenaline shooting through your veins as you wind him up.
âRemind me, who threw their back out a few weeks ago pulling a tray of muffins out the oven?â
His flesh hand grips behind one of your knees and tugs you right to the edge of the counter, while his left one, still clasped over your own, drags his tip over your folds.
âI donât remember hearing you complain when you drunkenly ate half the tray and then threw up over the rest,â admittedly, not one of your proudest moments.
âShut up and fuck me, Barnes.â
âYes maâam.â
Just like that, youâre drowning in him again, gasping for breath as you lose yourself in a flood of lust. Bottomed out, stuffing you full, Bucky barely graces your pussy with the chance to adjust to his stretch once more before heâs moving, the sweet graze of every inch being dragged along your sensitive walls.
Your nerves are still reeling from his mouth, a quiet hum of electric pleasure reawakened by his throbbing cock and his vulgar mouth.
âShe fits me like a fucking glove,â his hands are pawing at your waist, your breast, your face, never in one place for too long as he begins to settle into a rhythm of thrusts. âDoing so good for me, darling.â
The softness put into his term of endearment births an ache in your chest, one that will accept no medicine other than your arms around his neck and his lips on yours. Mouths tangled in kisses and sweat dripping down your skin, Bucky halts â your hips pressed together, the swell of his balls resting right against your swollen cunt, the head of his cock resting right against your sweet spot â and grinds.
Slow, deliberate, delicious. You whine into his mouth and feel how he swallows it, feasts on your ecstasy with a willing tongue, and a smiling mouth, and possessive teeth that tug at your lip as he pulls back. He stretches out the feeling, grinding a second time as your noses bump against one another.
âBucky,â his name is an anchor, a paperweight, something to ground you amidst the floaty feeling of being two orgasms deep with a third approaching any time now.
âI know,â he says, and you believe him. Believe that he knows, that heâs known, that he always knows when it comes to you.
You lay your head to rest upon on his left shoulder when he returns to chasing a high between your thighs, a renewed vigor behind each thrust that has your hips rolling to meet his and your nails raking over the straining muscles of his back.
âI lied,â an unprompted confession stumbles out his mouth, fingers flexing into their grip on your waist. âAbout the apartment viewing. I didnât go.â
âBucky,â is all you can manage, branded into his skin with a kiss along his neck.
âIs that all you can say? Huh?â His voice carries a teasing lilt, paired to perfection with the pad of his thumb rubbing at your clit. âIâm giving pivotal revelations here, and youâre just gonna reply with that?â
Another echo of his name, walls fluttering around his dick.
âBucky, Bucky,â heâs mocking you, a torturerâs laugh as he moans his name into your ear. âKeep going, you sound so pathetic itâs almost cute.â
Beyond words and beyond sense, you give in to the weight of his palm splaying against your stomach and guiding your back down onto the island. The soldier hooks your legs over his elbows, deepening the angle that his cock fucks into you, and you swear you see stars dance along the kitchen ceiling.
A hand smooths over your gut and you look back at Bucky to find adoration in his eyes.
âYou see that?â You almost want to cry when his movement switches back to a slow drag â innnnn and outtttt â until you notice it: the smallest hint of movement beneath your flesh, a subtle visual of the outline of his tip bulging against your skin from inside you. âSee how full she is, how good Iâm making her feel?â
Pressing your hand against it, you canât help but giggle as you feel him poke at your palm, only to fall back into a puddle of incoherent noises when he keeps pushing at that sweet spot, over and over. Harder and faster with each draw back of his hips, you feel rivulets of your own arousal roll down your ass and onto the marble, tainting the counter forevermore in the sins the soldier commits against you, the sins you welcome with open legs.
Youâre near the edge again, and he feels it, pushing you closer and closer as he slowly spirals into a mess of phrases that barely begin before heâs cutting them off with something new.
âDonât deserve this-â He catches himself, rips the insecurity in his voice out by the roots. âCâmon, let me see it one more time. Need to see you fall apart.â
âWant you to fall apart too,â you manage to beg, unwilling to watch him hold back or pull out before he finishes. âPlease!â
Like any good soldier, he obeys.
Crashing over you like a wave, heâs doubled-over by the waist and sandwiching you between the counter and him. You feel him spill into you, hot ropes of cum painting your walls white as a third crescendo washes over your body.
Both of you seek out the other as his thrusts grow languid and your walls spasm, milking him for every last drop heâs got. When your mouths meet, itâs less of a kiss and more of you simply breathing into the other, exchanging air and body heat.
âSo,â you croak eventually, exhausted and spent atop the counter yet completely unwilling to relinquish him from blanketing you. âAre you gonna do that every time I steal your ice cream?
Somewhere between jello-ed legs and cold compresses, you wind up in bed.
Skin clammy, lips swollen, lust satiated, you practically melt into the buttery softness of your bed sheets as Bucky lays you down. Despite how youâre still basking in the glow of your third and final orgasm, the soldier seems to think, for a second, you can handle another.
With gentle hands prying open your thighs and a curious tongue diving in for a second helping, licking up the dribble of his own cum spilling out your hole, heâs quick to be corrected when you roll away from his touch with a whine and a plea, âthink I might actually die if you make me cum again, Buck.â
Heâs unbothered by the rejection, wholly embracing it as he curls up behind you and snakes his arms over your naked skin. Itâs you who drags the sheet up and over you both, turning in his arms to plant your head on his chest. His heart races beneath it, but you hold off on teasing â your own isn't any better.
âSamâs going to kill me,â you whisper out into the room, when moonlight is peeking through your curtains and both of your heartbeats have calmed down.
âIâm sorry,â you feel him shift beneath your head and, though you canât fully see him, you feel that blue gaze land on you. âHave I not made it clear enough what name you should be saying in bed?â
âThereâs a serious chance Iâll die and youâre thinking with your dick,â he squirms as you pinch at his nipple. âYouâre no better than the men on your list, Barnes.â
Silence floats back in between you for a moment, peaceful as the slow stroke of his fingers dancing up your spine.
âWhy would Sam kill you?â He pauses, hand pressing a little harder down against a knot in your shoulder. âHe knows you have a crazy guard dog.â
Your crazy guard dog just pressed a kiss against your forehead, how frightening.
âHe made me swear I wouldnât get involved with you. He said you werenât in the headspace for a relationship, that you needed to focus on inner peace first.â
âTurns out inner peace is being inside of you,â you pinch at his nipple again. This time, he doesnât run from it. This time, you almost swear you hear a little moan creep up his throat. âSo, Wilsonâs to blame? I can get behind that.â
âTo blame for what?â
His handâs now running up and down the back of your arm, leaving goosebumps wherever its tender touch goes.Â
âWhy it took you so long to jump my bones.â
âYou think I jumped your-â Your head rises off his chest and you stare into the navy darkness of the room, trying to make a concrete shape out where you see shadows of his face. âWait, so these past few weeks, Iâve not been hallucinating? Youâve been⌠flirting?â
âItâs been more than a couple weeks, sweetheart,â Bucky seems to have no problem finding you in the dark, hand cupping your cheek and dragging you up to press a chaste kiss against your mouth. âYou donât seriously think I waited until morning to check that sink without hoping to be caught, do you?â
âSo you were slutting yourself out on the kitchen floor!â
âThink the kitchenâs seen worse,â worse might be the understatement of the century.
Clothes still lay discarded, counters unwiped, ice cream completely melted. Cleaning you up had been the soldierâs only priority, and you werenât in the mood or the mindstate to argue with him on that.
A fingertip tickles down the slope of your nose.
âStop fighting it, youâre tired,â you hear him whisper.
âI want to hear more about your desperate efforts to get my attention,â itâs nothing but a weak protest.
âWe have all the time in the world for that. Sleep,â you donât hesitate to comply when Buckyâs hand presses you back down against the warmth of his chest. âYouâre going to need it. Our upstairs neighbours still need a taste of their own medicine.â

"yay monsters with body hair" but more than just werewolves and other lycanthropes. what about hairy vampires. i'm tired of seeing vampires be smooth as butter and flat as a washboard. just imagine.
vampires with beards, mustaches, trimmed and well-kept, stained red with blood as they finish drinking from you.
vampires with body hair, thick and dark, all over - chest hair you can run your fingers over, arm and leg hair coating their limbs, swaths of hair on their back, like a bat.
vampires with dark hair, vampires with curly hair, that doesn't glow ethereally in the moonlight but you find yourself cording your fingers through and catching the tangles.
vampires with ruffs and manes, like bats, wooly and thick and coarse. vampires with full bush, unashamedly there.
vampires with hair everywhere. vampires as natural, animal sort of beings, vampires that don't have to be clean shaven to be gorgeous and hot and desirable.

"comms are live. hello, can you hear me?"
a pause.
there's a static crackling that rings through your headset before bucky's voice comes in, low and gruff, "yeah, unfortunately."
"good morning to you too, barnes." you smirk as you lean back in your chair, the screens in front of you flickering to life one-by-one. "it's nice to hear that your sunshine and optimism lived to see another day."
"play nice, you two." sam warns, "we haven't even gotten inside."
"i am playing nice." you retort, "that was me being sweet."
"define sweet..." bucky grumbles. you're not sure whether he's forgotten you can hear everything he's saying or if he's doing it just to spite youâ but you let it slide.
you glance over to a screen where you can see joaquin's bootsâ and only his bootsâ thanks to his poorly angled body cam. it's shaking like he's struggling with something.
"joaquin, you there? i think your mic's off."
"yeah, he's here. he just can't figure out his ear piece." sam sighs. you watch him step into joaquin's screen and grab something from his hands, "you just have to click the button, man. it's not that hardâ"
there's an awful screeching noise that pulses through your headset. it sounds like someone had just murdered a sentient robot and then fed its screams through a megaphone.
you pull it off in a hurry, waiting until it goes silent, and then place it back onto your headset with a huff. "everybody just... stop touching things."
another screen immediately catches your eye. blotches of red and orange pop out amongst a deep blue backgroundâ heat signatures patrolling the perimeter of the building that sam, bucky, and joaquin are in. you watch as a handful of them enter the warehouse.
"we've got movement." you still up in your chair, zooming in as the thermal overlay focuses, "there's about four patrolling the west perimeter. there's fiveâ noâ seven of them have just entered through the east side of the first floor."
sam peaks around the corner, but he can't see much unless he wants to compromise their position. he pulls back, "super soldiers?"
"i can't tell. they move like it, but nothingâs confirmed." you narrow your eyes. your eyes flicker to a smaller screen and a controller that sits beside it, "i'm sending scout. incoming!"
from somewhere in the sky, a grey blur cuts across the roof of the warehouse. bucky rolls his eyes as he watches it zoom past.
on your screen, scout's POV snaps into focusâ clear, high-res, infrared, and absolutely glorious. itâs practically your child. you guide the bot with a simple flick of your wrist.
a small drone no bigger than a tennis ball and stamped with a white 'S' on its side zips through the air like a wasp on a mission. it's virtually silent, zipping low as it peaks around the corner of the east wall.
"okay, they aren't armed, butâ" you pause as you rotate scout, "wait, there's a truck pulling up on the east loading dock."
sam furrows his brows. they didn't plan for anything other than a simple surveillance and a couple catch and arrests. "can you see what's inside?"
you turn to another screenâ a thermal drone that's zoomed into the truck. "one driver and one passenger. there's a few crates in the back, but i can't see what's in them. they must have some sort of cooling system because they're freezing."
joaquin glances between sam and bucky, "that has to be the serum, right?"
"this must be one of the meeting points for their buyers." sam says, "they're gonna be here any second."
"don't worry. i've got eyes on them." you cut in, fingers flicking across your keyboard as another feed pops up, "i'm guessing it's the four black range rovers approaching from the south along franklin street."
there's a pause, then bucky asks, "what's our game plan?"
he's not looking at sam or joaquin. he hasn't moved a muscle. his voice is low and steady, his eyes fixed straight aheadâ like he's waiting for your voice to tell him what to do next.
and you don't hesitate.
"we need to seperate them from the buyers. if this is an exchange, they're going to have bodyguards. we can't have thirty armed criminals in one warehouse. can you handle that, torres?"
joaquin nods, "loud and clear."
without another word, he takes a running step off of the warehouse's broken wall. his wings snap out from his jet pack with a hiss, catching the wind as he flies south along franklin street. you watch his tracker blip across another screen, already zeroing in on the buyers.
"and you two have to take these guys out." you continue, focus turned on sam and bucky, "there's five on the perimeter, all armed. there's two that have just wandered off towards you guys. pick them off."
sam's voice crackles in, "i'll take the guys with the guns."
there's a pauseâ
"we can take the guys with the guns." he corrects himself a moment laterâ probably after a look from bucky.
"they're unloading the crates now. the truck is electric, so i think can stall it long enough for you guys to get closeâ maybe cut off their exit entirely. we still don't know if they're enhanced, so be careful and don't be stupid."
you watch sam's body cam as bucky turns to him, his voice flat through the comms, "yeah, sam."
sam scoffs and waved him off as he readjusts his shield, "i think she means you, man."
"i was just throwing it out there." you roll your eyes, fingers flying across your keyboard as you send joaquin backup, "torres has already contained the buyers, so you're upâ go."
bucky's already moving before you can even finish your sentence, heavy boots almost silent against the concrete floor. sam vaults the barrier to his left, moving fast and low.
sam closes in. a pacing guard turns just a moment too lateâ sam drives his fist into the side of his face. he drives into another guard, sending him tumbling into a wall with a dull thud. another one spins around with a gasp. he fumbles for his weaponâ
crack.
a metal fist drops him before he can even point it. bucky steps over the guy, barely slowing his pace or breaking a sweat. but then another guard rounds the cornerâ one who doesn't fumble with his gunâ and shoots.
you look over to another screen. the thermal camera shows more figures closing in on sam and bucky, clearly on high alert. the tension in their movements show that they're panicked. the four crates that had been unloaded were now being covered back up.
"you've got six of them heading your way, and fast." you scramble. the truck's screen is visible on your screen, but your software is still trying to figure out the password, "they're unarmed, but be careful."
sam's wing fans out in a practiced motion and shields them both from the bullets. the shots ping right off of the reinforced metal. his wing retreats, and the guard looks terrified. he tries to reload the gun, but he's struggling.
sam's voice comes through, dry but amused, "i guess we're past the stealth phase."
"i didnt like that phase anyways." bucky grunts as he shoves the guard against a wall. he makes a point by grabbing his gun and snapping it in half like a twig, tossing it out reach. he knocks the guy out with one swift punch to the jaw.
they're doing goodâ clearing the path with ease and making sure to be vigilantâ but then they walk into the main area of the warehouse. it's wide open and humming with the sound of the truck and trailers shoving the crates back into the back, and there's at least a handful of masked figures standing there.
the six figures you had seen nearing sam and bucky are already stepping into the light of the warehouses main floorâ calm, coordinated, and slightly intimidating.
each one is broad-shouldered and looks battle-worn. their body temperatures come up significantly warmer than both sam and bucky's, and you can tell something is wrong.
"you think they've taken the serum?" bucky shifts his stance, fists already clenched.
you watch as one of the men lurches forwardsâ blindingly fastâ and throws sam across the room, far too fast for sam to catch himself. he hits a pillar, sliding down it with a groan.
"shit." you inhale.
"i think so!" sam yells, voice strained.
the rest of them charge. bucky's the first to meet them head-on. he lands a solid punch to one of their jawsâ and it should've dropped himâ but the guy just snarls, barely flinching, and drives his knee into bucky's stomach.
sam's back up, his shield snapping into place just quick enough to block a hit. he's fighting hard and moving fast, wings flicking around for balance and defence, but for every hit he dodges, there's another one right after.
you're watching the fight from a drone overhead like a game you can't control. youre working on trying to stall the truck, but it's difficult when youre also watching your friends get their asses beat.
sam takes out one guy with a swing of his wing and a nasty uppercut, but two more corner him. bucky slams a guy through a metal beamâ literally through itâ but it only buys him a second before another super soldier grabs him by his jacket and tosses him across the room, back slamming into a shelving unit.
thenâ like a miracleâ a screen on your right starts beeping. a red dot farts across the radar, closing in on the warehouse. you spin in your chair to check the corresponding feed just as a figure cuts through the sky.
you grin, "torres incoming!"
not even a second later, joaquin bursts through one of the warehouse windows, wings flaring wide. his visor glints as he absolutely bodies two super soldiers like bowling pins just as one of them winds up to hit bucky again.
he lands with a thud, wings retracting quickly as he jogs up to sam. bucky is close behind, but he's still fighting off two super soldiers.
"about damn time." sam huffs.
bucky wipes the blood leaking from his nose, taking a moment to catch his breath, "what the hell took you so long?"
"traffic." he grins and holds his hand out for sam, who's literally holding on by a thread, trying to prop himself up with his shield, "was getting your asses kicked a part of the plan?"
sam groans as joaquin pulls him up, "don't push it, joaquin."
you're still watching the fight through various monitors. the comms are full of grunts and sharp breathes, but now that joaquin's there, they're struggling a little less.
and then there's a beepâ a small, sad beepâ and a window that says 'OVERRIDE FAILED' in big red letters. you freeze.
"they've locked me out of the truck's system. they're overriding my remote access." you scramble to restart the process, but it doesn't let you.
you glance at another screen. the camera feed confirms your worst fearâ they're escaping. one of the super soldiers is climbing into the driver's seat, the rear doors slamming shut as the engine hums to life.
"they're taking offâ" you panic as you watch the truck pull out of the warehouse driveway, "shit, someone stop that truck!"
before anyone can respond, bucky takes off in a full sprintâ no hesitation, no plan, and clearly no intention of letting that truck get away or waiting for anyone. his boots pound against the asphalt as he trails it.
"barnesâ" you call through the comms, stressed out of your mind.
you hadn't expected him to chase after it. he was the only one without wings or a jet pack, yet you watched him run after that truck like he was chasing all he's ever wanted. the panic in your voice doesn't help. if anything, it only pushes bucky harder.
he barrels out onto the street, only a few metres from the truck. you send a drone up ahead, the camera feed glitching as it races to keep up. you're trying to calculate every route the truck could take to evade captureâ until your eyes land on a large clearing.
there's a river glittering under the sun, splitting the city in half. a large drawbridge stretches over it, connecting the two sides of land. just next to it, there's an enormous cargo ship waiting to crossâ and your heart stops when you notice the bridge is already at a 70 degree angle.
"they're gonna jump the bridge, barnes." you quickly warn, "if they make it across before the splitâ"
"they're gone." he finishes, breathless but ready. you can hear his sharp breathes through your headset, "i'm not letting it get away. 'gonna jump it."
"fall back, barnes, you're not going to make it." you bark through the comms, trying to keep your voice steady. you watch as he speeds up, running faster than you've ever seen him run.
"you better listen to the lady, bucky." sam adds, wings slicing through the air as he tries to catch up.
you watch as the truck barrels forwards, climbing up the incline of the rising drawbridge like it's easy work. bucky's closeâ too close to stop. he digs his feet into the ground harder as he launches himself up the incline.
you can see it all through a droneâ the truck about to leap, bucky on its tail, the bridge yawning wide open underneath them, and the water far below shining like teeth. the cargo ship blares its horn as it draws closer to the bridge, wary of what's happening.
it happens too fastâ
the truck leaps across the gap. its front wheels leave the ground for just a split second before the back wheels follow, and then its airborne. behind it, bucky jumps too.
you're on your feet now, eyes locked onto the drone feed. your hands are braced on either side of the desk and your knuckles have gone bone-white. you're not breathing or thinking. you're not even sure if your heart is beating.
for a moment, he's airborne. then just as quickly, he's falling straight through the gap and into open air. the wind catches in his jacket, gravity yanking him down towards the water and the cargo ship below.
just before he hits the ship deck, a blur of red, white, and blue zips pastâ sam.
his wings flare as he dives, hooking one arm around bucky with precision, the two of them twisting mid-air as the momentum nearly sends them spiralling. they hover under the bridge for a moment before sam takes off towards solid ground.
you collapse in your chair and yank the joystick for scout, who zooms towards bucky and sam. its camera focuses, cutting through the haze of the sun to check on them.
"jesus christ, buck, are you okay?" you panic into your mic, already trying to see if he needs medical attention.
"i've caught the princess, he's safe." sam replies, smug as ever.
you lean in closer to the screen as scout zips around him, "are you injured? you might need to take your vest off so i can assess it and let medical know."
"take me to dinner first." he doesn't look thrilled about the rescue. he brushes off his jacket with a clenched jaw, then narrows in on scout, who's circling him. he flings his hand at it like a fly, "and get that stupid drone out of my face. it's ugly."
"rude." you frown, "he just risked his tiny propellor life to check up on you."
"yeah?" bucky asks flatly.
you narrow your eyes, "yeah."
bucky gives scout a fake smile and says an insincere 'thanks buddy'. thenâ without hesitationâ bucky grabs scout mid-hover. you barely have time to shout at him before he launches scout straight up into the sky, spinning wildly and almost vanishing.
the feed spins out of control as the stabilisers struggle to compensate with the speed it'd been hurled at.
sam clicks his tongue and shakes his head, "ooooh, she's gonna kill you."
bucky shrugs, utterly unfazed, but there's a shadow of a smile sitting on his lips, "i didn't like the way it was looking at me."
"you better pray he still works when you get back or else i'll murder you in your sleep." there's a lowness in your voice that should be intimidating, but bucky doesn't falter.
"i'd like to see you try." he retorts, his tone bordering amused.
"you've never seen me." you reply matter-of-factly, "you wouldn't even see me coming.â
"oh, trust me, the moment i hear nasally breathing, i'd know exactly who was about about to beat my ass."
"that sounded like a compliment, barnes." you roll your eyes, ignoring the insult and simply smirk, putting on your best mock-sultry tone, "are you complimenting me?"
"don't flatter yourself. i've just taken too many hits to the head."
he hears you scoff, and it makes his grin widen. he can almost imagine you in your little computer room at the base, sitting in front of your set-up with an unimpressed look on your face, or even pacing back and forth muttering about how annoying he is.
it's weird how he knows so much about you, but still can't really picture what you look like. he's tried, but it's mostly just a blurâ almost like a familiar face from a dream.
sam stops walking and turns to bucky with his hands on his hands, "are you guys done flirting or do you want me to circle back in a couple of hours?"
"you should've just let him fall into the river, sam." you grumble through the comms.
"hey guys?" joaquin's voice comes in clear and troubled.
sam pauses, his eyebrow furrowing, "what's up, torres?"
"you might wanna come and check this out."
it's later in the day. the team had gathered back at the base to debrief, worn out and trying to gather themselves after the failed mission.
sam is slouched on a chair, eyeing the information on the screen to figure out what went wrong, bucky's leaning against the wall with a towel around his neck and a band-aid above his brow, and joaquin's icing his shoulder and holding up his phone, where your voice comes through the speaker.
"so youre telling me that they just abandoned two entire crates full of super soldier serum and then just dipped?" you spokeâ sharp and unmistakably done with everything.
"uhhhhhhhh... yeah." joaquin blinks, then tilts his head in confusion, "i thought you were already caught up with this?"
"do i sound caught up, joaquin?" you roll your eyes and take a deep breath, "it just doesn't make any sense. they went through all that effort to keep up busy, only to leave the serum behind like its nothing?"
"you think it was a decoy?" joaquin asks.
"i don't know." you half-shrug, "they've barely touched it, and i just got a message that they want me to check it out before they log it and send it into evidence."
sam straightens in his chair, "you want backup?"
"it's sitting in the middle of an air-force base, sam. if someone pops out, they've got bigger things to worry about than meâ like the twenty armed guards surrounding it or the drone that's been circling it for the past hour."
"you're actually leaving your cave?" bucky jokes.
"yeah, barnes, i am." you deadpan, hand already on your 'caves' door handle, "since you threw scout into orbit, i'll have to use my eyes like a normal person. he's fine, by the way. just a bit of whiplash."
sam huffs out a laugh, but his shoulders are still visibly tense, "hey, just be careful, okay?"
"always. i'll call back in ten." you say, more to yourself than anyone else, then hang up.
the room is silent for a few seconds. the low him from computer monitors fills the space, punctuated by the slow ticking of a clock nearby.
joaquin sighs, then mutters, "can't believe they left the crates behind." he shifts the ice pack on his shoulder, "feels... off."
sam leans back in his chair with a tired sigh, "if anyone's gonna spot something we missed, it's her."
then another moment of silence stretches through the team. outside the window, the airfield lights burn against the dusk. the base is usually quiet at this time of day.
bucky stares out of the window. then he asks, "is she always like that when she's out in the field?" he doesn't clarify what he means by that, but the others seem to understand what he means.
"what, annoyingly confident?" sam lets a small smile wander onto his face as he thinks about you, "she's about ten times worse when she's not behind those screens. but it's good. she doesn't miss much. and when she's got a gut feeling..."
sam doesn't finish his sentence. he doesn't need to.
"you should see her during intel briefings." joaquin adds with a goofy grin, "she'll shred a guy's whole thesis with like... three words. it's brutal."
"and that weird 'incoming' thing she does?" bucky frowns, like he's genuinely confused, "what is that?"
joaquin laughs under his breath, "she's been doing that since we were recruited. it's like... her thing."
bucky's quiet for a moment. his eyes glance at joaquin's phone where your voice had just crackled through not even a minute ago. it sat idly on the table. there's a weird feeling in his chestâ almost embarrassment. he'd known you for two years and was only just now asking questions.
"is she tall?" bucky blurts out.
joaquin blinks, caught off guard, "what?"
there's another beat of silence. sam turns his head away slowly from the monitor, clearly unimpressed, and gestures vaguely to bucky. he deadpans, "he's never seen her."
"seriously?" joaquin raises his brows, "you've been working with her for two years, and you've never ever seen her face?"
bucky runs his tongue against the inside of his cheek. he wants to just get over the subject, but he's brought it onto himself. he shrugs like it's nothing as he pulls the towel from around his neck, but the pink tips of his ears say the opposite.
"she's always behind a screen or..." bucky runs his hand over his face, exhaling like he already regrets having this conversation, "or on encrypted phone calls, or in a control room in some random part of this place. she's not exactly the easiest person to bump into."
"you've never looked her up? never seen a photo?" joaquin still looks utterly amused, inching ever so slightly across the table, "you haven't even stalked her, just a little bit?"
bucky looks at him like he's spewed gibberish, "no."
"she was standing right next to you last week." joaquin exclaims incredulously, "at the debrief? she was standing next to you with her arms crossed? we could go check out to the crates right now. she'd be there."
bucky furrows his brows, completely silent.
sam leans back with a knowing smirk, "trust me, if he'd seen her, he'd remember her."
"what's that supposed to mean?" bucky frowns, unsure if he should be offended or if he actually has a point to make.
"it means she's memorable, man." sam says like it's the most obvious thing in the world, "voice like that? brain like that? you think the looks don't match? sheâd have you thinking about her 24/7.â
joaquin raises his brows in agreement, "he's got a point."
bucky doesn't respond, and his silence says more than any smartass comeback ever could. he's just sitting there, absentmindedly playing with the towel in his hands and staring at nothing in particular, his gaze far offâ maybe trying to picture you again. maybe trying to figure out if he should go out and see youâ but it feels wrong.
sam watches him for barely a second and has already read him like a book. he rolls his eyes and leans forwards with intent, like he's seen this before. and he has. "don't go getting all obsessed, buck."
that snaps bucky out of his head. he scoffs, "i'm notâ"
"she called you buck and you didn't say anything about it."
joaquin watches the exchange like its an intense tennis match.
"i've known you for, like... ten years. i called you buck last year and you didn't like it." sam points out, gesturing emphatically, "and you just asked if she was tall like you were filling out your dating profile preferences."
"it was a question." bucky defends.
"a weird question." sam retorts.
"oh, give me a break." bucky clenches his jaw, "you're telling me that if you there was a voice in your ear 24/7 for two years, you wouldn't be going insane?"
and he meant insane. you were everywhere. in his ear during missions, on his phone when you need to let him know important intel at ungodly hours, in briefing folders where half of the intel had come straight from you, and even in conversations he overhears whenever he walks through the base.
youâ the genius air-force captain who works directly for the new captain america.
no one really knew how you ended up running tactical for sam, but no one had questioned it either. you were just good. scary good. the kind of smart that made people shut up and listen, and the kind of precise that made bucky trust your voice more than his own gut.
bucky had fought his entire lifeâ in wars, for and against hydra, stared down gods and aliens and wizardsâ but somehow, it was you, the staticky voice in his ear, that kept him on edge.
how can someone be everywhere, but nowhere to be seen?
but then there's a loud bangâ loud enough to jolt sam and joaquin out of their chairs. its sharp and feels wrong in their guts, the kind of sound that doesn't belong in a secure military base.
"what the hell was that?" sam shouts.
an alarm starts blaring in the main sector of the air baseâ where you are.
the three of them were already sprinting down the hallway before they had even registered that they'd moved. the smell of smoke hits their noses before they even make it out of the doorsâ acrid, bitter, and smelling off chemicals.
outside, the air is thick of it. it sticks low to the ground, a handful of military personnel already corralling debris and shouting orders at each other amongst the wreckage. something had definitely exploded.
"jesusâ" sam mutters with his mouth shielding his face from the smoke, "isn't that where the crates were?"
bucky's jaw tightens. there's a crunch under his boot, and when he lifts it, a tiny vial with blue liquid stares back at him. his eyes sweep through the smoke, but he's not sure he could even recognise you. a figure in fatigues passes by and bucky's wastes no time in stomping towards them.
"heyâ" he calls, voice rough with urgency. your name slips from his mouth, "was she here? was she hurt?"
the figure turns and points to the other side of the base, "they took her to medical." they quickly reply.
joaquin wastes no time and bolts in your direction, not bothering to ask any questions or where you areâ he'd find you.
sam is already stepping over the debris to try to figure out what had happened. when they'd transported it back to the base, there had been no signs that anything was wrong. and now, after hours of silence, one had detonated after you had checked on it.
"she said she felt something was off." sam stiffens, "and she was right."
bucky rounds the edge of the blast zone, his eyes scanning the ground. bits of scorched wood and metal are strewn everywhere with dark smoke still curling upwards like it's taunting them. his boot kicks something small and metallic, half buried in the dust.
"sam." he calls, crouching down.
sam looks over. his eyes narrow as bucky reaches for a small warped disc. it's blackened, but not completely unrecognisableâ a thin casing, circuit etching, and what looks like melted adhesive around the edges.
"they were never gonna come back for it." bucky turns over the deflated bomb, "wanted to cause serious damage to whoever took it."
"yeah, and it worked. they've put our man in the chair in hospital."
bucky rips off a flailing piece of plastic from the bomb. underneath, there's writing writing in minuscule block letters and unintelligible to him at first glance. its not english or in any language he recognises.
he squints, turning it slightly, "you seeing this?"
sam leans over and brushes soot off of the surface, "some kind of... manufacturing tag?"
"could be a location." bucky matters, pointing at a short line of text half-buried under the sticky residue, "this part here looks like latitude and longitude."
sam exchanges a stumped look with bucky, "so what, they booby-trap the crates, nearly kill our comms specialist, and then give us a return address?"
"looks like it."
they both fall silent. there's still a hum of chaos and confusion in the air with military personnel running back and forth to figure out what's happening, and joaquin's still in medical trying to find you. sam's jaw ticks.
"you thinking what i'm thinking?" he asks.
bucky nods once, "yeah. time to pay 'em a visit."
the moon hangs heavy over the towering complex. the building hangs on the edge of a tree line, swallowed by both nature and time. what used to be a lavish apartment complex in the 70s was now home to spiders, rats, and bird nests, the crumbling skeleton of concrete and steel forgotten, but not untouched.
joaquin frowns, craning his neck just to look up at the building, "you guys sure this is the place?"
before he can even finish his sentence, a slow gust of wind passes through. it whistles through the exposed windows and cracked walls, groaning like its alive. the metal structure groans under its own weight and it sways.
"that cannot be good." sam audibly winces.
they shake it off, moving without speaking. joaquin checks his wings and weapons, bucky is staring up at the windows like he's trying to see something through them, and sam is trying to get redwing to scout the areaâ a poor substitute for the tech they had gotten used to.
there's a silence surrounding them that crawls under their skin. no crackling in their ear pieces, no humming from drones zipping around in the air, and certainly no voice in their ears telling them what to do next. all that accompanies them is the sound of wind and the thud of concrete as chunks occasionally fall from the building.
then joaquin exhales through his nose and shifts uncomfortably like your lack of presence is physically effecting him, "yeah, this feels weird."
"right?" sam lets out a relieved laugh like he's been thinking the same exact thing, "it's almost too quiet. i dont know what to do with myself without someone yappin' in my ear."
he glances sideways at bucky, who looks like he's thinking the same, but is keeping his mouth shut about it. "you miss her too, don't you, buck?"
bucky pauses like he's about to say something witty that'll get sam off of his back, but he lets out a small breath in amusement and nods once instead, "yeah. i guess i got used to her bossing us around all day."
then, as if summoned by pure magic, there's a crackle that hits all three of their ear pieces.
"you guys can't get rid of me that easily." your voice slips in, smug and unhurriedâ like you'd been listening the whole time and were just waiting for the perfect moment to turn your mic on.
sam jumps so high that he nearly flies redwing straight into a power line, "jesus christâ"
bucky's head snaps straight up. his hand flies to his ear piece like he can't believe that your voice is actually there. "what the hell are you doing on comms?" he asks sharply, but he can't hide the hint of relief he feels.
"it's nice to hear you too, barnes." your roll your eyes, amused.
"they cleared her." joaquin laughs, answering the question before they could ask.
"yup." you nod and gesture to your face as if they can see you, "i'm a little burnt and they had to remove a piece of metal from my cheek, but other than that, i'm fit as a fiddle."
your monitor flickers to life. in one of them, you can see the tips of bucky's fingers pressing against the lens of the small camera he usually wears on missions.
"what are you doing, barnes?" you deadpan as you watch one of your screen flip back and forth.
"i'm trying to putâ" bucky sighs as he tries to jam the camera into a small hole in his vest, but it twists and turns and wont stick. "this camera's broken."
"it isn't broken. you're just putting it in upside down."
"... didnt the nurse tell you to stop talking?" bucky grumbles as he messes with the small camera. he flips it around and scoffs when it sticks on with ease, "y'know, to preserve your vocal chords and prevent any more damage or whatever?"
"a bomb exploded in my face, barnes, not in my throat." you roll your eyes, "and lookâ it's in now. see what listening to me does?"
"i thought i was... zooming in."
joaquin snorts, "dude's out here trying to fight super soldiers with the tech literacy of a toaster."
"i've killed people with a toasterâ"
"love the attitude today, guys. very inspiring." sam grumbles. redwing flies back into their radius and clicks back into sam's pack, "now that you're here, you mind checking out the perimeter?
"whatever. scout is inâ"
"incoming." the three of them chime in unison, perfectly timed and perfectly familiar. there's a silence before you laugh.
"wow, you guys." you sigh with dramatic flair, a mix of both sarcasm and genuine amusement, "i've babied you guys for so long that you're finally taking after me. wanna call me mama next?"
you can hear joaquin snicker loud and clear through the mic, and you watch through sam's body cam as bucky scoffs, rolling his eyes like he's annoyed with your antics.
sam gives the camera a flat look, knowing that you were probably laughing at their faces, "this is what happens when they let her out of medical early."
scout zips into the scene, a quiet mechanical sound whirring past the team. it flies high up into the abandoned apartment complex, small enough to squeeze into the cracks of broken windows and rusted beams like a bird, scanning the surroundings and mapping them out on sam's tablet.
"scout's in." you announce, weaving scout through dusty cloth and abandoned furniture.
from outside, the guys glance up, watching as scout disappears for a moment before darting back inside.
"i'll never get used to how fast that thing moves." sam mutters as he watches scout zip through the top floor.
"he's faster than redwing." you simply reply, but sam doesn't miss the slight edge of challenge in your voice.
"excuse me?" he scoffs, glancing at bucky's body cam like it's you and you're actually there, "trust meâ if your tiny little tennis ball goes down, you're gonna be begging to use redwing."
"i'm not touching your freaky little robot bird. i have standards."
"hey, i met your ex. don't you talk to me about standardsâ"
there's a sharp bark of laughter from joaquin, but bucky cuts in before you and sam's banter can escalate. "can we focus?"
you roll your eyes, but narrow in on scout's POV.
"something moved on the fifth floor. it could've been the wind and some tarps, but it could've also beenâ woah."
that gets their attention.
"what is it?" bucky asks, immediately alert.
you zoom in slowly. "there's... something big in here. looks like machineryâ lots of it. the whole setup looks old, but it doesn't look abandoned."
"what kind of machinery?" sam asks.
"hang on." scout scoots a little closer, and your eyes widen. "it's a production labâ specialised injectors, gene sequencers, stabilisersâ i think this is where they were were making the serum."
joaquin narrowed his eyes in confusion, "they used this place as a super soldier factory?"
you shook your head, "no, not anymore. looks like it's been stripped clean, but the setup's still here. they didn't even bother hiding what it was and just left it to... rot. scout's picking up residual heat signatures, so whoever was here cleared out recentlyâ maybe a few hours ago, maybe less. it should be safe."
âshould be." sam mutters under his breath, but he's already pulling his shield to his chest and heading towards the door, "never feels comforting when you say that."
the team fans out as they enter the apartment buildingâ or what's left of it.
sam sticks to the lower floors, descending down stairs leading to a basement. the flashlight on his vest isn't bright enough to cut through the vastness of it.
bucky decides to check out the machinery to see if they left anything of importance behind. he mutters something about it smelling like a meth lab as he heads upstairs.
joaquin jets to the rooftop. he wants elevation, to see the layout of the place and the potential leads that could find the group behind thisâ but he also wants to avoid being on the ground floor if the building decides to give way.
"scout's overhead if you need backup. keep your comms clear and open. let me know if you find anything." you tell them before turning your microphone off.
"wouldn't dream of ignoring you." joaquin teases.
and then you're alone in the silence of your command room. you lean closer to your monitors, hands intertwined against your mouth as you watch your boys disappear one by one into the dingy bowels of the apartment complex.
it's dark, and even with scout's night vision, you can barely see ahead. the hallways look more like underground tunnels, and you can only imagine how cramped it must feel. the camera stutters with static as scout floats ahead, probably from the lack of service. you're almost afraid you might lose contact with them.
scout rounds a corner. you dont necessarily know where you've guided himâ it's too dark to seeâ but you know you're somewhere down below. you're half-focused, watching bucky's body cam and keeping tabs on joaquin's feedâ until something jolts scout off course.
the small drone clips the corner of a wall and bumps into sam's shoulder, startling him.
"what the hell?" he whips around, staring down at scout like he'd just punched sam in the face, "don't sneak up on me like that."
you click your mic on with an apologetic smile, "sorry. wasn't looking where i was going."
sam rolls his eyes and turns back to the basement. it's almost a labyrinth with how many empty boxes and crates are stuffed down there, and it smells of mold and rot. sam scans the room, and you do too. there's an old supply crate shoved into the corner of a hallway, covered by a measly and moth-eaten tarp.
"hang on..." sam mutters as he nears it.
"sam, wait, don't touch itâ" you warn, but it's too late. sam nudges the tarp aside, and what's underneath sends your stomach plummeting.
"it's a bomb." you breathe, "get out, sam, nowâ"
"shâ"
the comms explode with staticâ not just sam's, but bucky's and joaquin's too. there's a high pitched ringing noise piercing through your headset and sam's screen goes white, then black.
your hands fly to your keyboard, pulling up scout's emergency override system. he's still functionalâ wobbly and a bit glitchy, but functionalâ and through his lens, you see smoke and chunks of plaster. there's a section of collapsed ceiling sitting beside scout's whirring body.
before the smoke even clears, another explosion rings outâ louder and closer, and then there's another. for a split second, all you can see is light, your screens showering you in a horrible, horrible feeling of dread. for a second, you think you've lost all of them.
"sam!" you yell, "sam, can you hear me? sam?"
there's movementâ and then there's a groan.
"still alive." he coughs through the dust, his voice strained, "think i caught the edge of it. damn shield saved me."
"okay. you're okayâ" you let out a horribly shaky breath, "just... hold still. i still need toâ joaquin? bucky? someone, come in."
there's nothing but static, and then one of your screens flashes back to life. it's joaquin's, who's outside and on flat ground.
"i'm fineâ jesus, i barely made it out of there." joaquin pants, doubled-over with his hands on his knees, "the roof's collapsed. i managed to fly out just before it gave out."
you close your eyes for a split second, relief washing over youâ but then it's gone just as fast as it came. you whip your head towards the last monitor, the screen still static and your heart clawing in your throat.
"what the hell happened?" sam grunts as he pushes a chunk of concrete off of his chest.
"i don't know, man." joaquin replies, still catching his breath, "i was heading down and there was a POP, and then the whole building blew up like a chain reaction."
"it was a chain reaction. they must've known we were coming." your voice is low, urgent, "one in the basement near sam, one on the roof, andâ" you pause as you glance at bucky's feed, "one near the lab."
sam presses his hand to his ear, trying to filter out the crumbling concrete from the static in this ear piece, "bucky, do you copy?"
"barnes?" you call again, leaning over your console like it'll bring you any closer to him, "barnes, can you hear me?"
"come on, buck, say something." sam mutters, pacing through the wreckage, "try bouncing the signal again."
"i am." you snap, more out of fear than anger, "i've already rerouted twice. there's justâ there's nothing." then, more quietly you add, "he was right by the lab. that blast radiusâ" you swallow hard.
"i'm going after him." sam says immediately, already pushing his way out of his entrapment.
"noâ no, wait, sam. the buildings not stable. i have to run a structural integrity scan before you can move." you pause, frantically typing, "follow scoutâ he'll find a way out. i'll find barnes."
sam clenches his jaw, but he listens.
"i'm going to try switching stations. maybe in the explosion he accidentally hit a button. maybe he just lost signalâ a tech issue, maybe. either way, i can fix it."
you try reasoning out loudâ trying to stay calmâ but you're not convincing anyone, least of all yourself.
from the middle floor, bucky lets out a wrangled soundâ half-cough, half-groan.
he doesnt know where he is. everything's dark and dusty, choking him every time he takes a breath. his ears are ringing, and the ground is cold and damp beneath him, and it even takes him a moment to register that heâs on the ground.
and there's a throbbing pain in his legâ dull at first, but then sharp, like someone lit a fire in the muscle just below his knee. he tries to shift it, but the pressure doesn't give.
"shit.."
its hard to focus. he can't remember where he was or how he had gotten there. he blinks, once, then twice. it's silent, and he's alone. he can tell before the thought even forms, and a deep unsettling feeling forms in his stomach.
there's no chatter or humming of a drone. there's no voice telling him where to go or what to doâ there's no you.
bucky clenches his jaw as he pulls himself up on one elbow. he grits his teeth as he shifts, enough to look down. there's a large metal beam pinning him down just across his shin. he exhales, trying not to move too muchâ trying not to panic.
he reaches up to his ear, pressing against it just to see if there was anything at all. his fingers press the buttons, trying to switch the dialsâ anything to get a hold of someoneâ but there's static.
"sam?â he rasps, "sam, come in.â
a shifting groan in the walls answers him.
"torres?" his voice cracks, "joaqâ joaquin, come on. heyâ"
the metal beam pinning him down just creaks under pressure.
panic starts to creep into his minds, replacing all logic. the pressure on his leg is sharp now, his side aches, and the silence is starting to weigh on him.
and thenâ barely a whisperâ your name slips from his mouth. once, twice, and then once more, calling for you like you'd appear and rip the rubble from off of his body yourself.
"c'mon, talk to me." he pants, "tell me that i'm holding the camera upside down, or... or that scout's incoming. anythingâ justâ say something."
he waits, and waits, and waits, but only static answers.
bucky doesn't know what to do. if he moves, he's afraid the rubble around him will crush him. if he doesn't, he'll never get out.
he squeezes his eyes shut, his forehead pressing against the dusty concrete as his breath stutters. his heart is pounding in his chest and he can hear it in his ears, unsure if it's from fear or the lack of oxygen.
he doesnt want to die. at least not like this. not alone.
a sharp, dry laugh escapes himâ bitter and breathless.
"shouldve told you i missed your voice before i got crushed by a goddamn support beam." he mutters to no one, "that would've been smart."
his hand slips from his ear and falls to the floor. he's tired.
thenâ
"barnes? barnes?"
his earpiece glitches as he turns his head, looking around like the voice might be there. there's a sputter, and another glitchâ but the voice in his ear is unmistakably you.
"bucky, can you hear me?"
your voice cuts through the static like a blade of light in the dark. youre clearer now, sharperâ desperate.
and bucky laughs. its all he can do. a soft, disbelieving laugh into the stagnant air, his chest stuttering with pure, aching relief. its the sound of someone trying not to fall apart.
"youâ" he coughs, dragging a shaky breath into his lungs, "you dont know how happy i am to hear your voice. where's sam and joaquin?"
he can hear a loud breathy laugh and then a thud, almost like you just collapsed at your desk from sheer joy, "they're fine. they're out. you just... you scared the hell out of me, barnesâ"
"call me buckyâ."
there's a silence on your endâ like you're letting his words find their way into your brain. like maybe you needed to hear that.
then softer, you smile. "okay. bucky."
he closes his eyes again. he lets the sound of his name in your voice carry him through the weight pressing down on your leg.
"can you move? are you bleeding? are youâ"
"i'm trapped." he cuts you off. he knows you're stressing yourself out far too much, "there's a support beam pinning my leg down, but otherwise, i think i'm fine. i can't get a hold of sam or joaquin, so... you're all i've got now."
"good. i've got you all to myself now." you try to jokeâ trying to keep bucky from panickingâ but he can hear the quiver in your voice and the way your words wobble just enough to betray you.
"hey." he softens, "you don't need to worry. i'm okay. i'm alive."
"right. sorry, i'm justâ" you swallow, eyes boring holes into bucky's monitor, "i was scared."
there's a silence, and for a moment, you're afraid bucky's been knocked outâ but then he laughs. with his usual calm certainty you're so used to nowâ
"takes a little more than bombing a building to get rid of me."
you smileâ watery and breathlessâ even if he can't see it. but he can hear you, and that helps with his pain. bucky huffs out a soft laugh, but it catches in his throat when the rubble around him shifts against his chest.
you catch the sound immediately. "what was that?"
"i'm under five hundred pounds of concrete and steel." bucky grunts under his breath, "i don't think it likes me moving."
"okay, okay. hold on. i'm pulling up scout's last scan of your level." you're already typing, eyes darting between monitors. "there's a structural weakness about two feet to your left. if you can push against it, i think i can guide you out."
"you think?" he mutters.
"barnesâ"
"bucky."
you sigh, "i'm going to get you out, bucky. just.. trust me."
"i do." he says without hesitation.
you breathe in. "alrightâ now lean over and try to pull out your leg out from under that beam. it's cracked and scout thinks you can snap it. from there, you should be able to push some of the concrete away on your left and climb out."
"i'll try."
there's a deep rumbling sound coming from bucky's mic, and it was now more than ever that you wished his body cam had worked. there's a sharp grunt from bucky, and thenâ
there's a metallic groan, and then a cracking noise.
"bucky?"
"i'm out."
"jesus christ, bucky, don't ever do that again. i thought you broke your leg or something."
"you just told me to do it."
"that's not the point. i justâ" you stop yourself and place a restless hand against your forehead like you can scrub the panic away, "i'm re-routing scout to find you. sam and joaquin are moving to help you from the outside.
there's a pauseâ just the low hum of your tech and the faint hiss of static in bucky's ear.
"you're doing great." bucky says gently as he pulls away a handful of debris, "seriously. you've got me halfway out already."
"halfway doesn't count." you mutter. youre focused on scout's monitor as it zooms up multiple levels towards bucky. you're barely blinking, and you're thumbnail is torn up from where you've been nervously chewing on it.
he smiles faintlyâ dusty, tired, but honest. "it counts to me."
scout clears the floorsâ each level scanned and discardedâ and then, like a light in the dark, you can spot the unmistakable glimmer of bucky's vibranium arm under the rubble.
you switch back to sam and joaquin's channel, your voice breaking through the comms, "bucky's on the sixth level's east corridor. he's trapped, but he's okay."
"copy that!" joaquin responds instantly.
before long, bucky can hear two pairs of boots thudding against the ground. he blinks slowly as a flashlight burns into his face. he turns his head just enough to see them through the hazeâ sam on the left and joaquin on the right.
"took you long enough." bucky jokes as he shoves another piece of debris out of the way.
"oh, he's alive." joaquin exhales as he grabs at chunks of metals, "i thought we were gonna be digging out a corpse."
bucky rolls his eyes, holding out an arm, "love the optimism."
sam practically leaps forwards, crouching beside him, "you're a damn cockroach, you know that? an explosion, six floors of concrete, and you're still alive." he says, grabbing bucky's arm and slinging it over his shoulder, "can you walk?"
"i'll manage." bucky leans on sam and joaquin more than he wants, but at least he's upright.
as they make it out, scout trails behind them like a loyal shadow. your voice crackles through, but not in their ear piecesâ through scout. "you've got a clear past east. the stairwell's stable, but don't waste time."
bucky glances up, and although he can't see you, there's a softness in his expression as he limps down the hallway, "still with me?"
you smile, "still with you."
joaquin glances awkwardly at sam, then rolls his eyes, "alright, you can flirt later. let's just get out of here."
the hangar is dim, lit only by overhead lights that flicker slightly and the occasional sensors that turn on when a janitor walks by. sam, bucky, and joaquin stand in a semi-circle staring down at atleast ten full crates of super soldier serum, the lids pried open and the vials staringâ almost mockinglyâ back at them.
no one speaks for a while.
"so you're telling me..." sam pauses as he holds his hand to his mouth, trying to make sense of the unbelievable situation in front of him, "we almost died... and the serum was in john walker's hands?"
joaquin tilts his head, "hell of a sentence."
bucky leans over and plucks a vial from it's foam confine. it's heavier than he expected. he tilts the vial, watching the blue liquid slink to its side, an inkling of suspicion growing in his chest.
"who's to say this isn't a trap?" he places it back into the crate and crosses his arms against his chest, "walker drops off ten crates of serum and walks off, no questions asked? i mean... how'd he even manage to take these guys down? he doesn't have the shield or the government's support."
sam turns around and shakes his head, too stressed out of his mind to even think about it anymore, "i don't even wanna know, man."
behind them, a door opens with the familiar hiss of hydraulics. and then there's footstepsâ soft, but certain.
"what are you guys looking at?"
bucky freezes.
it hits him like a punch in the chestâ he knows that voice. he hears it in his sleep. in the quiet between missions. in the static of a dead ear piece. and now itâs just hereâ fast approaching.
itâs you. he knows itâs you.
he doesnt want to turn aroundâ not yetâ because turning around would make it real, and if itâs notâ if its just his mind trying to comfort him with something familiar in a world that keeps pulling itself from under his feetâ then heâs not sure he can handle it.
but thenâ
âwhy do you all look like someone died?â
and something breaks lose in him. bucky turnsâ he canât stop himselfâ and there you are. youâre walking towards them, headset around your neck and your sleeves rolled up, clearly just finished with reports, debriefing and damage control. you look tired, but so alive that it almost knocks the air out of his lungs.
he doesnt know what he expected, but you look better than anything he could have possibly conjured up in his mind.
itâs instant, like something short circuits in him. youâre safe. youâre here. thereâs no more static through a headset, no dust, and no explosions. youâre real and youâre standing ten feet away, completely unaware of the fact that he hasnât stopped thinking about you since you said his name over comms.
you walk closer, hands on your hips as you peer into one of the crates. you speak, but bucky barely hears you over the roaring in his ears.
sheâs fine. sheâs fine. sheâs fine.
he swallows hard. his metal hand twitches. you feel his stare before you see it. you glance over.
there's dust still smudged along the side of his jaw, and a faint scrape just above his eyebrow. but he's standing there and breathing, watching you like he can't believe you're real.
âhi, bucky.â the corner of your mouth twists up into a warm smile as you give him a proper once-over, âyou look good.â
you say it like itâs the most normal thing in the world.
as you walk up to them, your shoulder brushes his for a fraction of a second. you just stand beside him like it's nothingâ like this isn't some world-shattering event for bucky and that you werenât a disembodied voice talking in his ear less than an hour ago.
even sam and joaquin are surprised, side-eyeing each other over the crates with identical expressions of is this really happening right now? and why is he just staring?
he's trying to play it cool, but he can'tâ he just can't keep his eyes off of you.
"holy shit, is thatâ" your jaw almost goes slack as you peer into the crates, eyes glazing over the glass vials in their foam casings, "where the hell did these come from?"
joaquin lets out an exasperated laugh, "you'll never guess."
you blink, "john walker?â
sam snorts, âokay, maybe youâll guess.â
"i heard you say his name before i came in, i just didnât think he was the one who dropped these off." you exclaim. youâre sort of impressed, "are you kidding me? how'd he even manage to get in here?â
your voice pitches with incredulity, the question half-rhetorical, half pure disbelief. youâre already running through possibilities in your head, and none of them are good.
youâre still peering into the crates, but buckyâs barely processed a single word since you walked in. his brain short circuits a little, and he speaks before he can stop himself.
âyouâve got⌠pen on your cheek.â
you blink, caught off guard, âwhat?â
bucky gestures vaguely to his own face, like his hand can explain for him, âright there. blue. itâs⌠smudged under your eye. mustâve been from the, uh⌠debrief reports or something.â
thereâs a pause.
"seriously?â sam turns to face buckyâs, his brows raised so high that theyâre practically part of his hairline, âyou see the lady's face for the first time and that's what you say?
joaquin chokes on a laugh. you stare at bucky with an amused grin. he looks absolutely mortified.
âwhâ it was distracting.â bucky waves sam off, trying to get him off of his back.
but you only laugh as you watch bucky scoff, "two years and you still don't know how to greet me. you could at least tell me i look good.â
he furrows his brows, caught somewhere between embarrassed and flustered âthatâs a bit egotistical, donât you think?â
you shrug, âoh, my bad. i forgot that you were the only one whoâs allowed to be a little full of yourself around here.â
joaquin sucks in a breath through his teeth, âsheâs got you there, man.â
bucky rolls his eyes and sighs. he opens his mouth, then closes it, and then he just shrugs, âyou look good. really good.â
its awkward and a little stiff, but something about the way he says it makes it feel realâ a little vulnerableâ like he means it more than he knows how to physically express it.
you soften, just a little, âthanks, bucky.â
a short silence passes again, more comfortable now.
âokay, but seriously, what the hell are we gonna do with these?â you nod towards the crates, nudging one with the toe of your shoe.
sam blows out a breath, âi donât know, but i do know one thing.â
you, bucky, and joaquin all look at him as he claps his hands together like heâs had a brilliant idea.
âi think we deserve a drinkâ yâknow, to celebrate not dying.â
joaquin raises his hand, âi second that.â
âbest idea youâve had all day, sammy.â you grin, âiâll go grab the good stuff.â
bucky watches as you turn and leave, something unreadable in his eyes. he stays frozen as he watches you disappear behind a door.
once youâre out of earshot, sam turns to bucky and pats him firmly on the shoulderâ
âdonât worry.â he says with a knowing grin, âiâll make sure you get another chance to say something better.â
bucky doesnât reply, but the faintest smile pulls at the corner of his mouth.
General HCâs for Jacob Alpha Black
â.ŕłŕż A/n - so this definitely took longer then expected and I apologize, but I had an unfortunate loss over the 4th of July weekend, not that any of yall care but Iâm here to tell you:
write that fic, join that fandom, and above all, live without hesitationâtime isnât guaranteed.
â.ŕłŕż Warnings - some NSFW HCâs at the bottom <3
â.ŕłŕż WC - 1.3K
P.S. - this is for @sapphic-seraphim222 (ty for interacting with my first twilight hcs, it meant a lot<33!!
â.ŕłŕż :シ°⧠â°ď¸ Ë*ŕź â.ŕłŕż
â°ď¸ So warm
â°ď¸ Thatâs the first thing you notice about Jacob: this insane heat he has rolling off of him, even before the first phase. He was always warm, the underlying genetics always lingering along with those that came with evolution. After his phase, it became more than just an underlying heat; it has a way of flowing out like it was boiling over, begging to encompass others.
â°ď¸ On the hotter days in Forks, you could almost see it, rolling off, blurring and glistening, like watching heat rise from a long paved road. On cooler days, like most days, it was most welcoming to him and those around him.Â
â°ď¸ Iâm serious, he is a literal space heaterâif you are in a small room (or tent ;), after sometime, the room will get noticeably warmer, especially if there is no airflow/breeze coming through.
â°ď¸ He doesnât always notice it, but others do. Youâll catch people subtly leaning closer to him without realizing, soaking it in like sunlight.
â°ď¸ While he had always been awkward-ish as a kid and as a teenager, growing up on the rez meant he still had to speak and know everyone, especially being the son of a tribe elder. So he is sociable, a little mischievous when comfortable, and a total know-it-all, both funnily and irritatingly.
â°ď¸ If you just give him the time of day, and heâll get you to smile, chuckle, and have you laughing hard within an hour.Â
â°ď¸ But he still has his moments, his fumbles, and his ultimate apologetic, cheeky smiles. Heâll tell a dumb joke with too much confidence, stumble over his words, then laugh it off in a way that makes you laugh too. He charms easily without even tryingâbecause itâs real. Heâs not putting on a show, just being.
â°ď¸ Of course heâs very handy, always tinkering with something, metal or otherwise. Itâs calming to him; he can press pause on his brain and just lock into something that creates silence. Heâll spend hours working on an old motorbike, or a rusted part, with music playing softly in the background, sleeves pushed up and grease on his fingers.
â°ď¸ Itâs his favorite kind of alone timeâquiet and productive.
â°ď¸ It was hard when he phased for the first time. Everyone was so loud in the hive mind, it was hard to have a quiet head without running hundreds of miles away, and even then, he could still hear distant whispers licking at his ears.
â°ď¸ But being able to have something to lock into, it helped a lot, and made the voices quieter without having to go so far. It was nice, and heâd find himself too often in his garage, working on something, anything.
â°ď¸ He wonât say it out loud, but it kept him sane. Some nights, it was the only thing that helped.
â°ď¸ Especially when he is thinking a lotâhurtful things, and sometimes things that just happenâhe was tired from the back and forth with Bella, and itâs easy to just drive into something (besides you ;) ). Heâs not great at talking about his feelings, but you can tell when heâs hurting.Â
â°ď¸ He gets quiet. Withdrawn. Doesnât meet your eyes. And thatâs usually when youâll find him covered in metal shavings and oil, too deep in his distraction to answer the phone.
â°ď¸ But he can also appreciate a good hunt.Â
â°ď¸ Even before his phasing, he liked to huntânot in a sadistic way, he always thanked the animal, regardless of what they were, for being here and giving him sustenance, especially for his loved ones and pack members. It's just another thing he can focus on when things get crazy. It brings him a certain groundingâthereâs no noise, no pressure, just instinct, silence, and respect.Â
â°ď¸ He always buries something. Always gives appreciation.
â°ď¸ After his sisters left, he often found himself being alone a lot. He always had his dad and his friends, sure, but it was common that he found himself alone at times and⌠it didnât bother him too much. â°ď¸ He liked being alone. It gave him space to breathe, to think, to just be. But as he got older, that loneliness started to feel heavier, like something was missing. He wouldnât say it out loud, but the ache was there. Always.
â°ď¸ Loves a good campfire. The fire always brings a strange comfortâwarmth on the outside and a way to fight the cold on the inside.
â°ď¸ When it's not too wet or rainy outside, he stacks up some wood from the garage and starts a bonfire with some leaves and old shrubs. Sometimes his dad is with him, sometimes some pack members, and sometimes it's just him. He doesnât seem to mind either way, although the yearning for that someone to be with him is always there, yipping in the back of his head like a wounded puppy.
â°ď¸ Heâs usually seen in just shorts when on patrol, but when keeping appearances and occasional outings, youâll find him in tight-fitting jeans and t-shirts, maybe a jacket or flannel here and there, but not too often.
â°ď¸ He finds he gets too hot in places where the heater is turned upâliterally will start sweating, dare I say he gets a tickle in his tongue to pant.
â°ď¸ Even when he showers up to go outside into society, he somehow still smells like pine needles, cedar, and something like firewood. People notice.
â°ď¸ When he is caught inside like this, heâll take a moment to stand outside in the rain/fog just to breathe. Someone might ask if heâs cold, and heâll blink like they just asked if the sky was green.
â°ď¸ âNah,â heâll shrug, cheeks pink but completely unbothered. âIt feels nice.â
â°ď¸ And itâs not even to look coolâhe genuinely prefers it, especially after phasing. Too much heat made him restless, makes his skin itch in a way he canât explain. Heâs most at ease when the air bites a little, when everything is crisp and quiet.Â
â.ŕłŕż :シ°⧠NSFW HCâs Ë*ŕź â.ŕłŕż
â°ď¸ Heâs got big, calloused hands from building bikes and fixing carsârough, strong, and capableâbut the way he touches you is the softest thing in the world. He trails them slowly over your skin like heâs memorizing every curve, brushing your hair away so he can kiss that spot behind your ear.Â
â°ď¸ Thereâs a delicious contrast in how strong he is and how tenderly he handles you. His grip on your hips might bruise, but the way he brushes your hair from your face as he rocks into you is gentle enough to make you tear up.
â°ď¸ He grips your thighs like he owns themâbut always looks at you like you own him.
â°ď¸ âYou okay?â he whispers, voice shaking. âNeed me to slow down?ââeven when youâre already crying his name.
â°ď¸ His voice drops an octave when heâs turned onâgruff, husky, and something dangerous. Sometimes itâs just a low, âYou sure?â in your ear. Other times, he mutters in Quileute under his breath, growling your name as he presses open-mouthed kisses down your stomach. He doesnât even realize heâs doing it half the timeâitâs the wolf in him, the instinct to claim.
â°ď¸ Sex with Jacob isnât just physicalâitâs emotional. He touches you like youâre precious, looks at you like he canât believe youâre real. Heâll start slow, tease you for minutes with just fingers and lips, whispering the sweetest things in your ear.Â
â°ď¸ When heâs been gone for even a dayâpack business, errands, whateverâhe comes back needing to feel you. He lifts you, walks you to the nearest surface, and kisses you like heâs starving.
â°ď¸ Sometimes when he just phases back, all his emotions are raw. He canât stop pacing, his body twitching from leftover adrenaline. The only thing that grounds him is you. The way you soothe him. The way your body calms him.
â°ď¸ He doesnât even undress youâjust kisses you, needy and rough, like youâre the only thing keeping him human.
â°ď¸ But once the tension snaps and the haze clears, he turns into the softest man alive. Heâll hold you for hours, pressing kisses to your temple, whispering, âYou okay, baby?â over and over. Heâll wipe you down gently, help you into comfy clothes, and get water without you even asking.
â°ď¸ Then he pulls you against his chest and tucks your legs over his, murmuring a sleepy âI love you.â into your hair until you both doze off.
