Iâm a feminist, I love women, but Iâm really disturbed by stuff Iâve read lately about how women, womenâs relationships, womenâs spaces, are all magically naturally pure and free of oppression from violence.
The thing about feminist analysis we need to remember is that when we talk about men and women, weâre talking about statistical probability thatâs not able to accurately predict life every time.
A randomly-selected man is more likely to be taller than a randomly-selected woman. A randomly-selected man is more likely to earn more money than a randomly-selected woman. That does not mean that any man is taller or richer than any woman, or that every man is richer or taller than every woman.
So many times in debates about sex and gender, these probabilities get hammered out into flat declarative sentences. We know itâs wrong when sexists say, âMen are stronger than women, so women could never play sports against men,â but somehow give it a pass when a feminist says âWomen are less violent than men, so itâs not in a womanâs nature to be abusive.â
And as a feminist whoâs worked in womenâs shelters, Iâm beyond disturbed by how feminists twist statistics about violence into the claim that women just donât have the capacity to be violent or cruel.
Because what that really says is: Women arenât fully human. We donât fully exist in the world; our womanhood renders our anger and our aggression invalid. Weâre not capable of the kind of moral choices men are.
That isnât just bullshit, thatâs dangerous bullshit. You know who makes that kind of argument?
A woman who wants to hurt other people and get away with it.
Understanding this is also a good way to spot whoâs interested in breaking down the social hierarchy that hurts all of us, and whoâs just interested in building a new social hierarchy that benefits them instead.
We canât liberate everyone just by reversing the axis of oppression. If your goal is to hurt other people and get away with it, you arenât really fighting to end things, youâre just fighting to take control.
âI never paid any attention to people who told me to go out and live. I belonged always to whatever was far from me and to whatever I could never be. Anything that was not mine, however base, always seemed to be full of poetry. The only thing I ever loved was pure nothingness.â
â Fernando Pessoa, The Book of DisquietÂ
Iâm at the âweâll seeâ stage in my life. With everything and everyone. We will see.
Iâm outgrowing things and itâs making me really sad

i donât think native english speakers can ever fully appreciate the emotion i felt when i first found out that the vulnerable spot on the side of your forehead which is arguably the best spot to be kissed is called your templeÂ

âwalking aroundâ can be one of your hobbies
The Welsh language has a unique character which reminds me of the countryâs landscapes and history. For example, the Welsh version of describing something as âmusic to my earsâ is âmĂȘl ar fy mysedd,â or âhoney on my fingersâ. To me thatâs so much more poetic and sensual than the English idiom, and it reminds me of Walesâ history of poetry and song, and the fact that living in Wales â with its huge mountains, long beaches and 365-day rain cycle â is often a very sensory experience. There is something ancient about that phrase: when I say it I can almost feel how old the Welsh language is. Perhaps the fact that languages are embodied with so much culture and history is why it feels so poignant to forget them, and so painful.

Connie Post, from âHow to Sort the Living from the Deadâ
i just think itâs kind of funny how dark academia romanticizes the idea of academics being really out of touch and cut off from modernity and stuck in like the 80s or the 40s or something when in reality nearly every classics professor i follow on twitter has been talking about the hades game nonstop for days now
