"but the text never explicitly stated it!!!" hey, so that's actually what they tried to teach you in those english classes you barely passed 😁
I gave her a textbook so I'm not studying alone
Instead of doomscrolling lately I have been reading my PDFs and it turns out if you do this you learn a whole bunch of stuff. I’m afraid I must recommend it
classical studies have ruined my ability to see the word 'acc' as short for 'account'. i will sit there like an idiot trying to understand what a roleplay accusative is for an embarrassing amount of time

everything in this world is about hector and andromache, except for hector and andromache, which are about achilles and patroclus

it kind of fucks me up having an interest in the roman republic sometimes because like. yeah. people have been doing this for two thousand years. people have been drawing fanart and writing fic about those guys for two thousand years. granted they probably haven't been writing romegaverse fic for two thousand years, but still,
i hate plautus so fucking much why did i take TWO modules on him when will i be free.

the thing about nonfiction is you come out of it with several more books to put on your to be read list and it's only gonna branch out from there so really the only solution is to read every book in human history starting at the beginning

Literary equivalent of novelty-flavored Doritos (affectionate)
I'm so conflicted about Wolf Hall.
Emglish is my second language and for some reason this specific book slows my reading to a snail's pace. I started it February 10th and I'm only 220 pages in (out of 650).
It seems to me you're expected to come into this book being familiar with who Thomas Cromwell is, his life and influence in court, which I unfortunately was not. Things seem to just happen: suddenly the king likes him! Why? I don't know. Sort of evolved off-page.
Am I missing something? Is it the language? I'm so frustrated.
I'm so tired of publishers and bookshops promoting books by just listing the tropes. That's FINE for fan fic where you're working from the assumption that people reading the fic are already familiar with the characters and looking for specific Scenarios to rotate their blorbos in. But for original fiction? I have no fucking clue what your book is about or why I should care about it.
at least i can take comfort knowing that my favorite ancient roman statesmen are absolutely furious in hell that they cast damn celts n britons to play them in adaptations
caesar in hell finding out they cast an islander to play him on rome hbo

You don’t develop good, individual taste in anything (art, literature, fashion) by relying on other people’s taste. You develop it through trial and error, by reading widely within and across genres, and by exposing yourself to a wide variety of professional literary criticism you may or may not agree with. Read enough bad books that you’ll recognise them from the cover blurb in the future. Dig into niches that interest you. There is no universally accepted canon of Good Books. There is only the difference between well-informed and uninformed literary opinions.
