#MountainBikepackingKiwiland: Highlight#6- More often than not, for hours on end, the only creatures made of flesh and bones we came across were farm animals. Thousands and thousands of them. Sheep, cattle, horses, goats, deer or ostriches. They would stop grazing whenever they heard our bikes rattling by in the gravel roads. Some would get back to their task immediately, or would flee across their pasture out of surprise. Others would gaze at us as if spellbound, or would start galloping and cavorting along the fence until we rode past their field. I caught myself talking to them more and more often, and as days went by I developed that habit of smiling to them, cheering at their antics or, believe it or not, laughing with them. Most of them are livestock, fated to become food for humans one day or another. In the meantime they are wonderfully alive in the hilly or mountainous wide spaces of New Zealand, the country whose landscapes, and so much more, have been modelled by them all. We were so lucky to have them for companions during our trip. And i so love to visualize them out there still, busy grazing and taking everything in their stride.
