Eloquent Fumbling

Error's parents are named Ambrose and Glitz. I keep referring to them by "father" and "mother" in the flashbacks because I began those scenes that way and it kinda feels really... limiting, in a way. It forces you inside Error's head and not keeping you as much of an outside spectator in my opinion

As what can be gathered from the flashback scenes, Ambrose held a really high-ranking political position in the town they used to live in. He was a really respected member of society and government, so was sort of the person you couldn't really say "no" to

Glitz's magical ability made her a sort of "black sheep" who people didn't believe or trust. Ambrose saved her from her abysmal reputation and made her more trustworthy. But this newfound stable life became more like a prison the longer time went on

Ambrose had a horrific childhood. If you looked in a dictionary for the definition of "religious trauma," his face would be there. Sadly though, the scars of the past will catch up to you and you can inevitably end up repeating the cycle of abuse; even if you successfully buried and left behind some of the trauma inflicted on you

From the same perspective, Glitz didn't really have a good childhood either... Let's just assume everyone in the Couloir family is thoroughly traumatized

Glitz tended to see the best in people to her detriment. That made Ambrose's love bombing really effective

Fresh almost didn't get adopted, but because of Glitz's soft spot for children, she was able to convince Ambrose to take in a disabled toddler

Ambrose followed traditional gender roles and "societal etiquette" to a toxic degree. If you strayed or deviated from these rules, he looked down on you

Glitz wasn't originally from Ambrose's town. She sort of "ended up" there as a child

O k a y, so like. If you're for real, then... it's like the heart on tumblr. You smack the heart to show the creator that you liked their thing. It's literally the exact same thing on ao3. You know, the place where I and so many other people post their fics. You scroll down to the end, hit the heart kudos button, and there you go, you showed the creator you liked their fic

Of course, not all abusers are this way. Some really lack this sort of charisma and people can sort of see them for the jerk they are? This explains their complete lack of friends and why the thought process of "I can change him" fundamentally does not work. This still doesn't make you immune to people not believing you though or dismissing your pain when you say your abuser sucks, because even the obvious jerks get excused like "Well, at least you have a dad" or "You're lucky though because you actually have a husband; I can't get a single date."

H m m. What to say about them. I don't have much, since they're background characters who weren't ever planned to be super fleshed out or anything. But I can give fun little tidbits about them!

First, I imagine the two of them essentially being childhood sweethearts. Met each other really young because they lived down the road from each other, went to school together, and did all the cute "aww, they like each other so much" little kid things like hold each other's hands, give each other flowers, etc. Then, they just like. Stayed together. They were the sweet but kinda annoying couple in high school where you were happy for them, but them being so in love was a little bit obnoxious. It all worked out okay though 'cus they're still married today! :D

I imagine Reverie's family owned the Sunny Hill Bakery and he inherited it. So it's like a family business

Dawn came from a long lineage of artisans. They specialized in pottery painting. So, that's why they have fine china in their house; she helps make those and takes a special interest in them

I also imagine Dream looks a lot like Dawn, just Dawn has more pink tones than orange. Therefore, Nightmare is like. The spitting image of Reverie. Like, literally copy and paste, only one looks older. Same amount of tired and fed up with the world though lmao (In earlier chapters, I mentioned them having white eyes?? It was because I forgot Nightmare's passive self was more commonly depicted with purple. Nowadays, I imagine him with purple eyes, so by extension, Reverie would have purple eyes too)

Reverie is infamously stingy about money. He's essentially the "we have that at home" parent. Dawn is the really optimistic, big ideas parent, but she isn't as great at follow through and tends to get burned out easily. Literally will start a home renovation project because "it sounded fun" then abandon it halfway through because boy howdy, was that more work than she thought

Dawn has a competitive streak. She and her friends (who are often moms like her) would notoriously get into annual cooking competitions every Summer Celebration. She noticed Blue took an interest in cooking and likes to help him learn. She kinda took him under her wing and watches over him and Paps with other neighborhood moms after their parents died

I like to imagine Reverie has his own group of middle-aged dad friends and they go down to the tavern for a round of drinks every other week lmao

Although Dawn was not raised a baker, she got influenced by Reverie, and now both of them are very sensitive to food crimes

Aside from knowing they were good people and had kids close to the same age as Ink, Asgore also chose them to be Ink's adoptive parents because Asgore's actually a regular at their bakery and sends Royal Guards to pick up sweets all the time. So, he knew at least Ink wouldn't go hungry living there lmao
