In solidarity with economic refugees!
Art work by @nicolaslampert.
“Media attention on immigration issues rarely, if ever, discusses with any sort of depth the economic, political, and social factors that propel people to risk their lives to travel north across the border,” Lampert said. “Instead, individuals are blamed and a complex issue is reduced to a few soundbites – national security, terrorism, illegal immigrants, etc.” Lampert’s image frames the discussion from the other side of the fence and looks at the systemic reasons for migration. The small text of the print reads, “Since the passing of NAFTA, U.S. subsidized corn has flooded Mexico resulting in the unemployment of 20 percent of Mexico’s small scale corn producers - many of whom head North in search of work.”

Migration - Gravity Model
The Gravity Model of Migration shows how larger settlements have more to offer and are therefore more attractive to migrants. If two settlements are equidistant from an origin, more migrants are likely to travel to the larger settlement (B in the top diagram).
The model also shows that a greater distance between the origin and a possible destination equals more effort to get there. This results in fewer migrants being inclined to travel there. Therefore, despite settlement B in the second diagram being bigger, the origin is closer to A and therefore the migrants are equally distributed between the two settlements.
A non-map graphic for today.
Geography graduate student Derek Watkins has some fun with population densities in an interactive version of William Bunge’s The Continents and Islands of Mankind. The above shows areas in the world where there are at least 15 people per square mile. In the interactive, a slider lets you shift that number up to 500 where only a few spots in the world remain.
