Energy Plan Lessons From Customer Mistakes, Part 1
New Post has been published on https://www.paenergyratings.com/blog/2019/02/01/energy-plan-lessons-from-customer-mistakes-part-1/
Energy Plan Lessons From Customer Mistakes, Part 1
Mistakes are often the best way to learn. So, weâre exploring some examples of classic mistakes customers have made with their with their Pennsylvania energy plans to show other how others can avoid problems with their energy suppliers.
Recently, I was reading through some provider reviews and found several classic examples where customers made mistakes with their with their Pennsylvania electricity plansthat wound up costing them more. In the interest of helping our other energy customers Iâm sharing a few edited examples as common mistakes to show how other customers can avoid problems with their energy suppliers.
Late Fees? What Late Fees?
âIâve been with X Company for over ten years. I was satisfied with their rates and I always renewed with them. Last year, I noticed my bills getting bigger and bigger. So I looked them over and found they contained $10 penalties for payments made after the due date and a $10 âdisconnect letter service feeâ! I called them to explain. They listened but didnât offer any explanation except âthereâs nothing they can do.â I AM DONE WITH X Company!â
Read the Terms of Service
As you can see, the frustration and anger of this customer is understandable, especially since they donât see that they did anything wrong. But look closer. The customer complains that late payment penalties and disconnection letter fees suddenly pop out of the wood work when their account wasnât paid by the due date. They infer that these fees are unfairly added on to their monthly bill.
The fact is that Pennsylvania state law requires that all fees and charges be spelled out in each planâs Disclosure Statement. By reading the Disclosure Statement, customers will learn what they can expect if they make late payments. Pennsylvania state lawsays that late fees can only be charged once per amount due on a late bill. The amount can be up to 1.5% interest per month (18% per year) for the amount of the overdue bill and cannot be re-penalized. That means, the fee cannot be charged over and over again. However, note that itâs now very common for companies to include additional fees that can increase customer bills further.
That this customer sought to work out a payment system with their Pennsylvania energy supplieris commendable. But while some energy suppliers are willing to work with customers, some really just want to be paid when the bill comes due:
âWhen it comes to your electricity bill, âX Company is here to help. Your local utility company handles all Customer Assistance Programs. Please contact them to learn about payment options.â
Obviously, some customers having financial troubles might want to avoid signing with a company that thinks this is how to be âhelpfulâ. The best way to learn about the best Pennsylvania electricity providersis to read actual customer reviews.
Always Verify Your Payments
Itâs also important to bear in mind that this customer mainly got into trouble because they didnât check that payments cleared on time before the due date. Sure, itâs also possible the due date came right before the customer received their pay check and they didnât have the money available. However, the customer should have anticipated that and planned ahead.
To be frank, we donât know this customerâs exact circumstance for sure but suffice it to say that you should always make sure your payments get processed in time. If you pay before the due-date and you find a delay in the processing causes you a late fee, get your payment and relevant bank info together and complain to your Pennsylvania retail electricity provider. Youâll have a much stronger case if you can prove itâs their fault.
*Â *Â *
One of lifeâs best ways to learn is to make mistakes. By learning from these examples, Iâm hoping that energy customers will be better able to understand what they can expect and need to do in order to avoid having problems with their energy suppliers.

PA PUC Considering Power Switch Electricity Pricing Change
New Post has been published on https://www.paenergyratings.com/blog/2018/08/10/pa-puc-power-switch-electricity-pricing-change/
PA PUC Considering Power Switch Electricity Pricing Change
Is PA Power Switch costing you more? It leaves out information on electricity prices. The PA PUC wants to fix it but how long will that take? Read who has the most accurate pricing information and best rates right now to help you save money every month!
How do the changes to PA Power Switch electricity pricing affect me?
At the end of July, Dan Mumford, the Director of Pennsylvania PUCâs Office of Competitive Market Oversight (OCMO) announced that the PUC will be discussing changes to the PUCâs Power Switch website and how they display products. There are several issues here affecting customers shopping for a new utility, so letâs take a look at a few.
Smart meter roll out isnât yet complete in PA
One of the proposed rules would require all generation charges on the website to be displayed as actual prices, âper kilowatt-hour.â This has, however, been noted as difficult to implement because of the plan innovations offered by smart meters. Smart meters digitally track usage and provide a more accurate reading than analog meters, and can transmit usage data back to the utility every 15 minutes. Home owners can then track their electricity usage and prices throughout the day and adjust their energy usage accordingly. It becomes easier to use less electricity during expensive periods of the day, and more during less expensive periods.
Smart meters allow suppliers the chance to offer more energy pricing options and plans. The PA PUC is unsure of how to display this information correctly on their website. Meanwhile, smart meter rollout is being further complicated by the fact that not everybody wants a smart meter. There is legislation waiting to be passed that would allow people to opt out of smart meters entirely and allow them to keep their analog meter. All of which further complicates pricing matters.
Uncertainty with how to display incentives and deals
Currently, the PA Power Switch website provides users with an estimated price per month for plans. While the website took steps in December 2017 to start displaying the âper kWhâ price alongside plans and promoting how much âpotentialâ money customers could save, the savings didnât take things such as expensive enrollment fees into account. This meant any potential savings were likely to be far less than advertised. Some fees are not reflected in the âper kWhâ price, making it difficult for customers to know exactly how much theyâll be paying on their electricity bill.
When you bring smart meters to the table, things get even more complicated. Proposed time of use plans change the pricing of electricity during periods of higher demand. For that reason, energy rates may be cheaper or more expensive depending on the time of day, and so potential savings can change depending on when a customer uses their energy. In such cases, how accurate can the âper kWhâ prices be? While the Power Switch website is trying to keep up-to-date with smart meters, a variety of plans and pricing structures, options, and rates, how can customers know what theyâre really getting? How can customers know what theyâre really paying, and how much theyâre really saving?
Stay up-to-date and save with PA Energy Ratings!
With PA Energy Ratings you can easily and accurately compare utility plans and any additional costs that may be involved. Take the confusion out of shopping for a new electricity plan and head over to https://www.paenergyratings.com/electricity-rates to learn more and compare plans right now.

Switch to the Best 12 Month Plans, PPL Shippensburg, PA
High summer temperatures raising your PPL electricity bill? Save money by shopping for a lower fixed rate in Shippensburg, PA!
High Temperatures Making Your Electric Bill Sweat?
Summer is in full swing in Shippensburg, PA, and that means that your electricity bill might be looking a tad more expensive than normal. If your air conditioning is turning the heat up on your finances, it may be time to use PA Energy Ratings.com to shop for a new electricity plan to find the cheapest plans in the Shippensburg area.
Save Money with 12 Month Fixed Rates!
Starting off we have Direct Energyâs Live Brighter 12. Though itâs the most expensive of our three chosen plans at 6.7 cents per kWh, other plans in Shippensburg can go up to as high as 8.9 cents per kWh. Live Brighter 12 is the only plan on our list that does not have a cancellation fee. This means that should you be unhappy with the plan at any time, you can switch without penalty. They also offer online bill pay, paperless billing, and convenient online access.
Our second plan is Sperian Energyâs 12 Month Fixed plan. At 6.6 cents per kWh, this is a great plan for those on a budget who will be pretty secure in their plan choices. The one downside is that this plan comes with a hefty cancellation fee: $75 regardless of how many months you have left in your plan. However if youâre happy with the plan, the low price is a perfect trade off.
Our final plan is Next Eraâs NextEra Saver 12. This plan offers the lowest price available at 6.3 cents per kWh, and a super low cancellation fee: only $10 per month remaining in your plan. This means that you can switch at a fraction of the cost of some other plans. They also offer online bill pay and paperless billing.
How Much Will Electricity Actually Cost Me?
According to the EIA, the average Pennsylvania home uses 10,402kWh per year, which breaks down to 866kWh per month. Setting aside distribution charges, we can estimate about how much each plan will cost monthly and yearly.
With Direct Energy, each month would cost about $58. This means that over the course of your plan you would pay about $696 for your electricity.
If you were to choose Sperian Energyâs plan, each month would cost about $57. This may seem like a negligible difference, but over the course of the year the price gap gets wider, with your yearly total being about $684.
And finally, if you were to go with the Next Era plan, your monthly total would be about $54, and your yearly cost would be about $648. This is where the difference really shows. In comparison to the Direct Energy plan, you save around $48 a year!
Make your Power Switch Today!
If youâre paying more than these, you definitely have the chance to save a bundle by switching your energy provider. You can also increase your savings by looking into how to save energy in your home. Remember that companies can launch new plans and prices at anytime so be sure to check out www.paenergyratings.com to see how you could save more on your Shippensburg electricity rates!

3 Big Ways to Cut Your Duquesne Pittsburgh Electricity Bill

3 Big Ways to Cut Your Duquesne Pittsburgh Electricity Bill
Saving money on your electric bill can be just as easy as making smart energy choices. Find out how the three best ways to reduce your energy usage and cut your costs!
How can I save money on my electricity bill?
Summerâs here and so is the heat. Youâve done your best to conserve electricity and be energy-wise, but when your utility bill comes in itâs still enough to make your wallet cry. Weâve all experienced this before, but it doesnât have to be that way. Here are three big ways you can cut your electricity bill in Duquesne Pittsburgh.
Raise your thermostat at night and when away
You can save as much as 10% a year on your bill by turning your thermostat back a few degrees, and this goes for when you are away during the day or when youâre sleeping at night as well. Keeping your thermostat set as high as possible during the summer when youâre not home or active will lower your energy bill. This is because the smaller the difference between the inside and outside temperatures, the less frequently your air conditioning will run. A programmable thermostat not only makes it easier but also more comfortable and efficient. Itâs also good to keep in mind that setting the thermostat to its coldest setting wonât cool your house any faster either; itâll just run your air conditioner longer and result in making your bill even more expensive.
Insulate your home against air leaks
A great deal of energy is wasted due to air leaks in and out of your home. This can be stopped by caulking the cracks and openings around windows, doors, and places where pipes and wires pass through outside walls. Adding weather stripping to windows and doors also reduces drafts. Another way you can reduce your electricity bill is by adding insulation to your home. Both air sealing and adding insulation offer a quick return on investment. By reducing drafts and leakage you can improve comfort levels and save on your utility bill!
Shop for a new fixed rate plan at PA Energy Ratings!
It goes without saying that even if you adjust your thermostat and insulate your home, these savings mean nothing if youâre still paying too much on your electricity plan. You can shop for a new fixed rate plan at PA Energy Ratings right now and find the best deal for your personal needs. A fixed rate plan will lock in your price for the duration of the contract, protecting you from any external price raises and saving you money.

With these small tips you can save money on your energy bill right now. Donât let your hard-earned money go to waste, and donât forget, you can head over to https://www.paenergyratings.com/electricity-rates to learn more and compare plans.

PowerSwitch To 12 Month Plans PECO Norristown, PA!
New Post has been published on https://www.paenergyratings.com/blog/2018/07/18/powerswitch-12-month-plans-peco-norristown-pa/
PowerSwitch To 12 Month Plans PECO Norristown, PA!
Shopping for the right energy plan in PECO Norristown, PA, can be confusing . Luckily, weâve picked the best electricity rates in top plans that might fit your familyâs needs!
Whatâs The Best 12 Month Plan in Norristown?
Are you moving soon? If youâre like many whose leases are up this summer, you might be looking to switch your electricity plan in Norristown, PA. Weâve used PA Energy Ratings.com to look through and find the best deal on a 12-month fixed rate planÂÂâ perfect for that new apartment or home! Our three best plans offering the best value in the Norristown area are Public Power 12 Month Fixed, Next Era Saver 12, and Frontier Utilityâs Online Premier-12. These plans share a lot of similarities, such as:
None are 100% âgreen power plansâ
All offer free online access, paperless billing, and bill pay
All are fixed rate plans
You may be tempted to look for a variable rate plan to save money, but this leaves you open to drastic rate changes during high-use times of the year such as the deep of winter, or the dog days of summer. While it may offer you a low introductory rate, the following months will often see large spikes in prices based on the wholesale cost of electricityâ spikes that often cost you much, much more than you originally anticipated.
How much will these plans cost me?
Two things are really important while shopping for electricity: the kW/h price, and any fees that come along with it.
Public Power seems to have both the highest customer satisfaction, and the lowest price. Their 12 Month Fixed plan costs only 7¢ per kWh, and doesnât have a cancellation fee.
Next Era also offers a comparably low rate, at 7.1¢ per kWh, but has a $10 per remaining month cancellation fee.
Frontier Utility has the highest rate at 7.4¢ per kWh, and also has a $10 per remaining month cancellation fee. This is still a competitive price though, as some electricity prices in Norristown go up as high as 10.6¢ per kWh!
Price per kWh may look all well and good on the screen, but how much does that really cost you per month? The average Norristown home uses about 841kWh per month. Not including PECOâs distribution charges, these plansâ approximate costs per month and per year break down like this:
With Public Power, you would spend around $59 a month.
With Next Era, you would spend about $60 a month
And with Frontier Utility you would spend about $62 a month.
These minor differences become much more noticeable through the course of a year.
For Public Power your total for the year would be around $708.
With Next Era, your total would be around $720.
Finally, with Frontier Utility you would spend around $744
Make the switch today!
It is important to consider your budget when thinking about which plan to choose. Those with fixed or low incomes should keep the long term costs in mind when picking your power plan, especially with cancellation fees and other potential fees outlined in the terms and conditions of your contract. You can increase your savings by looking up how to save electricity in your home. Head on over to http://www.paenergyratings.com to look into switching your power company today!

Five Easy Ways to Slash Summer Pittsburgh Electric Cooling Bills
New Post has been published on https://www.paenergyratings.com/blog/2018/07/15/easy-ways-slash-summer-pittsburgh-electric-cooling-bills/
Five Easy Ways to Slash Summer Pittsburgh Electric Cooling Bills
Reducing your electricity use in Pittsburgh, PA can reduce your monthly bill. Itâs not that hard to doâsometimes itâs just requires the push of a button!
How can you slash your summer electricity bill in Pittsburgh, PA?
As the summer heat rises, so do your electricity bills. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects a 3% increase on electricity spending this summer compared to 2017. So what can you do to slash your bill and make some savings? Letâs take a look at five ways you can cut down on your energy rates in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
1. Cook outdoors and save money
When you cook inside, the heat puts a large drain on your air-conditioning system as it tries to combat the rise in temperature. A simple solution is to switch to the occasional cold meals, such as sandwiches or salads, and if you need to cook something, head outside! Save money on your energy rates by firing up the grill and enjoying a hot meal in the comfort of your backyard!
2. Wash and dry clothes during off-peak hours
Another way to save money on your electric bills is to run electricity-intensive appliances at night. Electric companies charge lower rates during off-peak hours, so take advantage of this by running the washing machine and dryer during these times. Most of the energy for washing clothes is used to heat the water. You can save even more money washing in cold water and then your hanging clothes out to dry in the sun.
3. Unplug your electronics
Your TV, computer and game consoles go into standby mode when theyâre off so they are still using electricity when theyâre plugged in. Unplug them when youâre not using them, or if thatâs too much hassle, save on your energy bill by plugging them into a power strip that you can turn off with a single switch when you go to bed at night. Less electricity running means less heating up in the house.
4. Turn the AC off and your fans on
Air conditioners are convenient but expensive. Cut your electric bill by running a fan instead. Fans donât reduce room temperature but they help your body cool naturally. If you donât have overhead fans, you can use an oscillating fan with the windows open and start saving money right away.
5. Close the shades and curtains

[caption id="attachment_323" align="alignright" width="365"] Reducing your electricity use in Pittsburgh, PA can reduce your monthly bill. Itâs not that hard to doâsometimes itâs just requires the push of a button! [/caption]
By keeping your shades, blinds or curtains down during the day youâll be keeping the sun from shining through the windows, which heats up the house very quickly. A very simple step, but it can help you make noticeable savings on your summer electricity bills. Â

What is a Pennsylvania Electricity Bill Scam?
New Post has been published on http://www.paenergyratings.com/blog/2018/07/09/pennsylvania-electricity-bill-scam/
What is a Pennsylvania Electricity Bill Scam?
Pennsylvania utility scams are on the rise. Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from being conned and robbed!
How do I avoid being scammed on my electricity bill?
Scams involving utilities are unfortunately becoming increasingly common. But how can you spot them and what can you do to protect yourself from these cons? Letâs take a look at three of the most common utility scams.
How to avoid electric supplier phone scams
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) reminds consumers to be cautious of telephone scams involving energy bills. One particular scam involves scammers calling customers and claiming they are from their electric company. They then inform the customer they have an unpaid bill and if they do not pay immediately, their service will be terminated. It is important to remember that if you are past due, you will always receive a written notice of how to avoid disconnection of service 10 days in advance. Your energy supplier will never demand immediate payment over the phone, and if you receive a suspicious call you should hang up immediately.
Avoiding door to door energy provider scams
Another common scam involves an individual, or individuals, that claim to be from the customerâs utility company or a competitor. They will try to gather personal information or access to the customerâs home, and in many cases while one person distracts the customer, the other robs their home. They may also request to see a copy of your utility bill to see if you are âgetting the lowest rate.â In this situation you should remember that utilities will not usually come to your door unless you have called them. Always ask for ID, and call the company to confirm the salesman, especially if they claim to need access to your home. Supplier representatives must wear photo ID displaying their name and the supplier they work for. If in doubt, always call to confirm.
Electricity supplier email scams and what to do about them
The PUC has warned of an email scam where customers receive an email stating they owe money on their electric bill even when they do not. This scam targets both customers and non-customers who use a different supplier. Another email scam asks recipients to click on a link. This can often lead to a malicious website that will then infect the userâs computer with a virus or malware. Make sure never to click on a link or attachment unless you have verified the sender, and if the email requests personal information, delete it immediately.

What are the Rules for Smart Meters in Pennsylvania?
New Post has been published on https://www.paenergyratings.com/blog/2018/06/29/rules-smart-meters-pennsylvania/
What are the Rules for Smart Meters in Pennsylvania?
The PA Public Utilities Commission requires all home in the commonwealth to have a smart meter installed by 2023. Learn how they can help to modernize the grid and cut your monthly PA electric bill.
What is a Smart Meter?
You can think of a smart meter as a two way communication to your local utility. A smart meter keeps track of your energy usage in 15 minute chunks and keeps your utility alert to the distribution conditions in your area. This means that if they stop recieving a signal from your smart meter, you arenât getting power, and they can respond. They know where energy is going and at what time.
Why do I need a Smart Meter?
The Pennsylvania energy act 129 made in 2008 requires the local utility providers of Pennsylvania to supply customers with smart meters. All seven Pennsylvania local utility companies, PECO, Duquesne, Penn Elec, West Penn, Pennsylvania Power, PPL, and Metropolitan Edison, are required to create energy efficient plans to reduce energy usage. One part of those plans is the use of the Smart Meter.
How Do I Opt Out of Smart Meters.
Unfortunately, your home is required by Pennsylvania law to have a smart meter. The PUC PA specifies that all consumers must have a Smart Meter. As such, a smart meter as a condition of service with your local utility. All PA electricity consumers are also required to pay the Smart Meter surcharge until full smart meter deployment is completed around 2023. The meter surcharge is a pass through fee. Each local utility has its own smart meter cost recovery plan that must be approved by the PA PUC.
PA Smart Meters Benefit You
One of the big problems with sending electricity over wires is âline lossâ. This comes from the wireâs natural resistance to electricity. When wire resists the movement of electricity it gives off heat. The longer the wire, the more electrical resistance, and the more heat it produces. On hot summer days when thereâs high demand for electricity, power lines sag because they are getting hotter and hotter. If they sag low enough to touch a tree, they can short out and cause a blackout.
Another problem with moving electricity during high demand periods is constraint. Because power lines get hot and stretch, they can only handle so much electricity at one time. If a lot of power is routed through one power line that canât handle the load, generators must wait to transmit their electricity âand they get paid thousands of dollars to wait.
Smart meters allow your local utility to track demand and usage of energy. If there is more energy being used in one area, and less in another, they can send electricity the most efficient route to the area that needs it. Because they eliminate the need for people to go house to house to read meters as well as better deter theft of electricity, smart meters help keep electricity rates lower.
Track Your Own Usage and Save!
If youâre trying to cut your electric usage being able to track your electric usage in fifteen minute blocks can be very useful, espcially if youâre using it to eliminate your homeâs energy hogs. Unfortunately, smart meters use a different wireless protocal to communicate with your utilty. Thatâs why you canât communicate directly with yoru smart meter using your smart device or computer. However, many Pennsylvanian electricity suppliers provide up to date information about your usage through your o line account. With the information of your usage, you can use electricity rates to predict how much youâll spend.
For information on energy providers that help you power your home more affordably this way, check out https://www.paenergyratings.com.
