Visualising Sound
This was mine and @sophiehulfillustrationâs response to a brief asking us to visualise some music of our choice. We stumbled across this piece by artist Bruce McLean which was interesting as his work is primarily painting and our initial ideas were focused hugely on his own concepts within his work, such as impermanence. We later changed direction and focussed our ideas on what the music evoked, and there we found this idea of a back and fourth scenario with me and Sophie playing two characters who reflect the high and low pitched voices in the music.
Quora brief
The brief was to respond to a question found on Quora.com, an open website for people to post questions on anything.
I selected this one, âWhat image should I use for the wallpaper in a restaurant?â
Although I haven't taken it completely literally, I stuck with the image making aspect of it, starting by making some collaged tiles as an alternative, then feeling that it was unsuccessful, I changed to creating something interactive, and made this set of lino stamps from which my intention was to offer this way of visualising recipes, possibly as an alternative to sets of crayons in restaurants as a way of engaging kids with cookery.

Test Prints
Some prints from my time in the âfactoryâ (my bedroom).
To make these I digitalised my handwriting on Illustrator by tracing the letters, creating slightly softer edges, then transferred the words and arranged them on photoshop, before transferring them onto lino. I aimed to use a more analog process (which would have been much quicker) by using a bigger pen and writing straight onto the lino but it meant my handwriting changed and didnât look as natural.Â
Lino Factory
Printing linos in my room to really get that feeling of being a political activist back in the 60s. Part of my 'Manifesto' project.Â
I genuinely felt like a rogue propaganda printer for an activist group.
Huw's Story Commentary
A clip from me and @huwrobertsillustration2 recording a spoof livestock olympics broadcast which he wrote for project on peoples attitude towards meat consumption. We also recorded another of his stories for another project at another time, where the story was intended to be read like a radio show or audiobook, soft voiced.
Manifesto - âFor those who wish to have my handwritingâ
This project went a bit wayward but I finally settled on using my own handwriting to create a manifesto. To start with, I wanted to focus on the parts of my handwriting that I appreciate, like the abstractness and ambiguity of each letter and even some words when they arenât written perfectly. Soon I had to figure out how to make this into a visually intriguing subject.
I took inspiration from the political activist group âLâAtelier Populaireâ which sprouted up in May 1968 who created a huge amount of silk screen prints as propaganda against the rising levels of unemployment and poverty. I liked how they were using their prints as guerilla warfare in the city, making the Ecole des Beaux Arts into a factory to base themselves from. To start with the connection with this group came from the fact that I wanted to create my own idea of what a manifesto is, an easily reproducible, compact piece of literature which has clear aims.Â
My idea was to create a manifesto for people who would want to have handwriting like mine. This became a slightly egotistical project , just showing people what I love about my own handwriting and how and why they could have it too.Â
Really, I think the process of creating some form of literature came over the aims within the manifesto itself. In the end the links between my project and LâAtelier Populaire became closer, as I decided to linocut my manifesto and make a zine. Slowly but surely my bedroom began to look more like a factory for propaganda as I was making these zines.

A Dadaist Romeo and Juliet - Text/Context
This concept arrived after a coincidental timing of projects. After creating nonsensical poetry in the Dada workshop we did recently, we were then set a project to reinterpret a play of 4 choices, Romeo and Juliet being one. I decided to read the original script as it was something I had never seemed to grasp in Baz Luhrmannâs remake.
I began to see this connection between the way in which the original play relies on the intonation of delivery of dialogue to understand it and the same in the delivery of Dadaist performance. It is intended to be nonsensical, but is delivered in such a way that we want there to be meaning in it.
I thought that combining these two very different concepts, an art movement, and an almost antiquated love story, could come together quite cleverly and create something satirical too by filming it in the style of a modern day documentary.
MotionÂ
Unfortunately I thought I would learn more about cinematography and direction but I still learnt the basics of an entirely new program at the end of this module. This was made using After Effects to showcase what I had learnt, it may not look like much but I utilised almost all the skills I had been taught in session and learned a few myself to get my head round it. I hope to be able to showcase my skills in Premiere when I have completed filming my Text/Context project.
