What’s Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS), and why do so many autistic people have it?
I learned about this the other day, when I posted about palinopsia (visual trailing/afterimages) being common in autistic people, and a couple of our followers told me about their VSS. I did some more research, and discovered that I also have it.
Visual Snow Syndrome is a neurological condition that interferes with visual processing. It’s caused by hyperactivity and hyper-excitability of nerves in certain areas of the brain that process visual information.
The core feature of VSS is constantly seeing tiny, fuzzy “feedback” in the environment. It’s kind of like seeing the world through a staticky TV screen. Some people’s visual static is larger than others. Mine is relatively fine-grained, but it gets bigger and more obvious in low lighting.
Some of the other symptoms of VSS include:
Palinopsia (visual trailing/afterimages)
Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
Increased and enhanced ectopic phenomenon, such as floaters, phosphenes, and Scheerer’s phenomenon
Seeing glare, starbursts, and halos around lights
Difficulty seeing at night/in the dark
Seeing random flashes of light and/or color, without cause from the environment
It’s common for people with VSS to experience comorbid migraines, but VSS is not the same thing as migraine aura.
So, why do autistic people often have VSS?
It comes down to the fact that VSS is caused by the hyper-excitability of neurons in areas of the brain that process visual information. A core feature of autism is hyper-excitable neurons, especially in areas of the brain that have to do with sensory processing. So it makes sense that autism would often inadvertently cause VSS.

“Wait you’re serious?” Tanaka asked dumbfounded, subsequently slapping a hand to his mouth to muffle his laughter.
Nishinoya frowned as his ears burned, “W-well It’s- I’ve a-always wanted t-to try it but-“ he sighed, “just- never mind.”
The libero walked away from his friend in complete and utter embarrassment. Who was he kidding? All of his friends would tell him no or make fun of him, just like Tanaka and Hinata did. He plugged his earbuds into his iPod and played the music that always makes him happy.
He trudged outward with his hands, and iPod, in his pockets. Tears of frustration pricked the corners of his eyes as he remembered the mocking words of his “friends”. Nishinoya paced down the sidewalk toward the empty gym. They don’t have practice today, so it should be empty. When he finally reached the spacious room, he buried his head in his hands and sighed heavily.
“Yeah sure, I’ll be quick I just have to grab my bag.“ the gym doors opened to reveal Karasuno’s ace with a grin spreading from his lips to his eyes.
Nishinoya hastily wiped his leaking eyes and turned his back to hide from Asahi.
“Uh actually Daichi, I’m gonna be a little bit. Coach wants to talk to me. Let’s all just meet at his store when we finish up.” The ace shut the door behind him and immediately sat down next to his best friend.
“Ah. S-sorry, Asahi. Didn’t t-think anyone would be here.” Noya blinked his eyes to let the welling tears fall from them.
The spiker smiled sympathetically as he reached up to dry his buddy’s eyes, “What’s goin’ on, Noya?”
“Nothin’. “Nishinoya mumbled, “Is’stupid.”
“Clearly not if you’re this upset.” Asahi placed a reassuring hand on his friend’s shoulder, “You know that I’ll never judge you. You just have to open up.”
The libero sighed, “Hinata and Tanaka think I’m some kind of girly kid now.” he spoke softly as he sniffled.
“What?” Asahi’s eyebrows furrowed in anger and confusion, “Why is that?”
“You promise you won’t laugh at me?” The second year asked as he looked at his best friend.
“I promise you, Nishinoya.” The spiker replied in a serious tone.
“Y’know that movie called Dirty Dancing?...” Nishinoya asked as his gaze trailed away from Asahi’s.
“Yep. I’ve seen it quite a few times.” Asahi replies, “Keep going. What’s going on?”
“T-the dance scene at the end...” Noya took a deep breath.
Now or never.
“I-I really wanna t-try it.” He replied in a soft, squeaky voice.
“And that’s why they made fun of you...” Asahi concluded aloud.
The ace sighed as Nishinoya nodded sadly and started to trail on about how it “didn’t matter”, and how he’d “get over it”. He jumped up to his feet suddenly and offered a hand for the libero.
The younger of the two took it hesitantly, immediately being pulled into a ballroom dancing position.
“Whaaa? Asahi you know how to dance?!” Nishinoya’s frown practically evaporated.
“Don’t tell the guys. Mom made me take lessons for a middle school cotillion and I just kept going with it.” Asahi replied with a kind smile, “Play the song.”
“You know the dance too??”
“Recitals.” Asahi replied dryly, “Again not a word to the guys.”
Nishinoya let out a loose chuckle as he unplugged his earbuds and began to play The Time of My Life. The two volleyball players glided through the dance efficiently; shock was a common feeling for both parties, wondering why the other knew the dance so well.
Noya was enjoying himself wholly. It felt so good to be able to embrace a passion, without being belittled or picked on for it. Even better is that his partner is Asahi: his best friend, his favorite person, his idol, his ace.
The apex of the song came close and the second year was completely lost in the sound. Before he knew it, he was running toward Asahi, ready to fly. The ace hoisted him in the air effortlessly, and he giggled madly at the sudden change in height... or so Asahi thought.
“Why are you laughing so much?” Asahi questioned as his own features upturned.
“Y-your hahahand!” Nishinoya replied with his eyes screwed shut, struggling to keep still, “Ihihihit tihihickles!”
Asahi’s eyes illuminated as he discovered the icing on the cake to make his buddy feel better. “Oh yeah?” The ace bear hugged the smaller boy and prodded at his sides.
“Ahahasahahihihi! Nohohoho!” The libero cried as he gripped the spiker’s head lightly.
“I’m not Asahi anymore! I’m Patrick Swayze!” He cooed, digging in a little more earnestly.
“Shuhuhut uhuhuhup!”
The ace gasped dramatically as he looked at the crumbling second year in his tickly clutches. “How dare you tell the great Patrick Swayze to shut up?!”
“ ‘Msahahaharry!” Noya replied while giggling furiously, not at all ready for the spiker’s next attack.
Asahi nudged Nishinoya’s shirt up to his ribs with his wrist. “Behold my true might!”
“Asahi what’re you gonna- dNGH AHAHAHSAHAHAHIHIHIHI!” The libero’s eyes widened, and he jolted, as he felt a pair of lips connect with his bare stomach and vibrate, “NAHAHAHA! NAHAHAT THAHAHAHAT!”
The ace’s lips upturned as he took in a breath for another raspberry.
“ASAHI! WAIT!”
“What?” The spiker asked innocently, looking up at the breathless second year and squeezing at his bare sides.
“IHIHIT TIHIHICKLEHEHES!”
“I’ve noticed.”
“YOHOHOHOU DOHOHOHONT GEHEHET IHIHIT!”
“What don’t I get?”
The ace brought his lips down for yet another torturous raspberry.
“Y-YOHOHOHOUR BEHEHEHEARD!!” The libero finally sputtered as he felt lips meet his stomach once again, “SOHOHOHO BAHAHAHAD!”
Ah finally Asahi understood. The spiker sucked in a huge breath and blew with all of his might.
The scream of sheer horror, that emitted from Nishinoya, was arguably Asahi’s most favorite sound in the world.
“OKAHAHAHAY! THAHAHAHATS ENOHOHOHOUGH!” Nishinoya gripped the hair on the crown of Asahi’s head as he laughed uncontrollably.
“Ahh.” Asahi said as he pulled back to let the little libero breathe.
“You- why- whawasthafor??”
“Noooooya...?”
“Don’t dodge my question!” The second year now had his wind back.
“But Nooooyaaaa!”
“What?!”
“One more?” Asahi asked as his eyes sparkled, grip tightening around the libero’s waist.
“I-“ Nishinoya sighed as a wobbly smile came onto his face, “o-one more.” He replied sheepishly as his ears burned.
“Woo!” Asahi cheered as he sucked in a huge breath.
Noya screwed his eyes shut and waited for the raspberry to come...
“Wh-“ Nishinoya looked down to see the spiker smiling up at him, “I thought you were gonna do an- AH!”
The libero was cut off by the ace dipping him down to the floor and ruthlessly digging into his sides and stomach.
