Make Picnic Table Seat Covers
Sew a seat cover for a picnic table to protect your clothing.
A picnic table seat cover will protect your clothing from a dirty surface and add visual appeal to a picnic seating area. A little simple sewing is required for the seat covers, and it's a suitable project for any sewing skill level. A medium-weight upholstery or canvas fabric is a durable, low-maintenance option that stands up to machine washing.
Instructions
1. Measure the length of the picnic table seat and write it down. Measure the width of the seat and write it down. Add 4 inches to both measurements.
2. Cut a piece a piece of fabric to the size you've calculated and lay it out on a flat surface with the right side facing down. Set a glass on one of the corners and trace around it as a guide for rounding the corner to remove the sharp corner. Repeat this with each corner, and then cut the fabric so each corner is rounded.
3. Turn under the raw edge 1/4 inch and iron or pin it to hold in place. Turn the edge until another 3/4 inch and iron the fold into place.
4. Sew about 1/8 inch from the inside folded edge, leaving a 1-inch opening at the end to feed elastic through.
5. Determine the circumference of the picnic table seat and divide the number by 0.75 to calculate the length of elastic you need to hold the cover on the seat. Cut a piece of elastic to this length.
6. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and push it through the 1-inch opening along the edge of the cover. Push the safety pin and elastic through the casing using a push and pull method. Pin the end of elastic to the casing edge by the hole so it does not go though the casing while you are pushing and pulling.
7. Grab both ends of elastic after feeding the entire length through the casing and sew them together to secure. Push the elastic into the casing and sew the opening closed with a straight stitch. Smooth the seat cover and casing edge to even the puckers made by the elastic.
