“ there’s, uh… been a change of plans.”
Savannah’s never been punched in the gut, but she imagines seeing Ava walk into the bar with her fiancée has got to be close to the feeling. It’s far too loud, Savannah’s not planned on drinking, but as she sees them walk in, she has to stop herself from ordering the strongest liquor the bartender will serve. She feels her phone buzz, and having seen Ava fiddling with her phone, she can only assume it’s a text with her name on it. A picture flashes through her mind – changing her name to Ava ❤ instead of the formal name, surname format she usually sticks to – and it makes her sick now.
The text tells her to meet Ava in the bathroom, and Savannah wishes she could walk out of the bar without a second thought, but she needs an explanation. With the worst luck all at once, she runs into Ava’s fiancée on her way, fumbling to apologize and help her pick up her bag. She’s smiling, but she’s also pretty confident everyone in a two-mile radius can see that it’s fake.
When she walks into the bathroom, she doesn’t even look if there’s anyone besides her and Ava there; Savannah keeps a safe distance, and hears Ava telling her there’s been a change of plans. She closes her eyes for just a second, shakes her head. “Oh, no kidding, and here I thought we’d agreed on going out with your girlfriend in the first place.”
Savannah’s hands are shaking, she tries to lace them together to stop it, but it doesn’t help all that much. “Did you not even think to warn me before coming, or is this just some sick game you want to play?” Sick comes out spiteful, mean, and thoroughly honest. She doesn’t know which part of it is making her feel like she’ll vomit any second – seeing Ava walk into the bar with someone else in tow, or not leaving immediately. “This is just about as much as I can deal with. I’m not going to make you choose, I think you’ve already done that by bringing her here. I hope you have a wonderful marriage.”
It’s nothing but honesty, though the hurt is evident in Savannah’s tone. She’s reached her boiling point.
