vivienne mercer was born to a working-class family in chicago in 1908. much of her youth was spent drifting between factory jobs, speakeasies, and underground queer spaces during the height of the prohibition era. in 1939, she fell in love with a woman named clara who failed to mention her vampiric nature. their fast-paced romance barely lasted six months before clara turned her. not only did clara fail to mention being a vampire, she also failed to mention she had enemies among vampire society. one evening, the two were attacked and when vivienne awoke, she was alone and immortal.
the next few decades were spent searching for her maker, unable to locate her. the trail eventually led south to new orleans. she arrived expecting to only stay a few weeks. weeks turned to decades and new orleans became the closest thing vivienne has ever had to a home. she was quick to learn of the city's hidden supernatural politics and the feuds between ancient vampires. over time, she had cultivated a reputation as someone who refused to bow to covens or anyone else who thought immortality entitled them to obedience.
these days, vivienne owns a tattoo shop tucked between a jazz bar and a crumbling historic building in the french quarter. she tells everyone she's stopped looking for clara years ago, but it was a lie. she still finds herself keeping an eye on every unfamiliar vampire who passes through the city ā and she still wonders why the woman who claimed to love her disappeared without a trace.
