Moses Sumney

Moses Sumney is perhaps the most public and well known aro person out there. He create a whole album (yes! a whole album) titled Aromanticism that was released in 2017. Not only is the album stunningly gorgeous it features very aro lines such as “Am I vital/ If my heart is idle/ Am I doomed?“ and “If lovelessness is godlessness/ Will you cast me to the wayside?”

He has a deeply anti-opression and anti-capitalist perspective that informs and is informed by his aromanticism. 

“I think that romance is very obviously a political tool, and a capitalist device. I’ve even thought recently, it’s quite good for the economy: the amount people spend on weddings and gifts. Also, [romance] just can’t be separated from a patriarchal structure — like the idea that in a homosexual couple, one person is the masculine, and the other is the feminine. Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel is a writer, actor, poet and director. She wrote and stars in Chewing Gum, acted in an episode of Black Mirror and plays the lead character in Black Earth Rising. 

She came out as aro on twitter in 2017. She hasn’t talked about it much since then but it looks like she learned about aromanticism through Moses Sumney. 

Here’s a quote of her talking about seeing his concert. 

“He’s a beautiful artist and I’ve read some interviews of his about romanticism and capitalism, and it was really refreshing to see views that I share but are also very taboo. Just about what exactly is romance, aside from lust and love, what is this other thing and do I really have that? She’s an alternative aroace model and activist that’s very outspoken about asexuality but also aromanticism. She was featured in a BBC3 documentary about asexuality although BBC got most of it wrong so she’s working on her own documentary to set things right, she’s also in a Sky News documentary where she talks about asexuality and aromanticism and I recommend everyone follow her on insta because she’s very, very outspoken about it and her pics and outfits are 🔥

Technophilia: A Transhumanist Zine // Call For Submissions! Issue #4

Transhumanism (H+) a movement aiming to transform the human condition by utilizing technology to enhance intellectual, physical, or psychological capabilities.

What does this mean in the context of humanity’s future? Is transhumanism “gentrification of the human body”? What type of enhancements will be available or mandated to the disabled and disenfranchised? What does this mean for the definition of gender, sexuality, or queerness? What repercussions will this have on mental health? What ways might new advancements serve to enforce, or deconstruct, power? How will this adversely or positively affect social norms and the politically oppressed? What will be the environmental impact or economic effects?

Submissions accepted in the form of poetry, short story, comic, & images.

There are no limits in subject matter; as long as it can be tied to the idea of transhumanism.

Think radical and creative! We’re looking for diverse views; beyond typical anarcho-capitalist techno-libertarianism transhumanism.

Overall, queer was approved of by 72.9% of respondents, with 37.2% of respondents specifying queer was their preferred umbrella term.

Queer is the most widely preferred umbrella term, and the 3rd most approved of umbrella term, behind LGBT+ and LGBTQ+.

Groups that do not prefer the use of queer as an umbrella are: straight respondents, exclusionst-identifying respondents, transmedicalists, truscum, sex-negative respondents, and sex work critical respondents.

Queer as an umbrella was preferred above other umbrella terms by all gender identities, and by all orientation groups other than straight.

Check it out! The zine fest I’ve been trying to start for a year is finally going to be a thing! The link takes you to the Facebook event, which has more info! The fest will be taking place at the Kent Community House in Kent, Connecticut. The date will probably be May 26th. I’ve soft-reserved the date with the venue, and this will be finalized when the grant money from the state of Connecticut is disbursed.
