anyone can make a zine, regardless of skill level or access to materials or design programs. all you need is paper, scissors and drawing utensils (although many people enjoy collaging!) web search "8 page 1 sheet zine how to".
everyone SHOULD make a zine too, you will feel so good about it ♡ it's about putting the power of production into the hands of the people! also you don't have to sell it or anything, you can just make one for yourself or trade/give some to friends!
i really love julia grofrer's guide to analogue self publishing aka making zines on 8.5x11 paper
and jaydragon/jdragsky's thread on staple's self serve print centres (if you're area does not have a local print shop, they probably have a staples or fedex print centre)
if you can't draw, here is twitter thread for public domain art and also a mini summary of when thing enter creative commons (generally 70 years after artist death in the US and CAD)
i also have a DIY zine page on my art blog that i am dedicated to updating as i find more resources! (not accessible through tumblr mobile app, mobile friendly, just open the link in a browser)
go make some zines!!!

Swim Thru Fire, written by Annie Mok and drawn by me, has finished its run on Hazlitt. You can now read the entire comic:
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8.
Huge thanks to Annie of course for her story, script, research, and feedback, and our AD Anshuman for all his support… and thanks also to everyone who reached out with nice tweets, emails, and fanart while the comic was ongoing, that was wonderful to see. The comic is complete but stay tuned for more STF news eventually :>

Something Bigger
A quick little comic I did as part of The Response, a group of cartoonists talking about and making work about various social issues. This time, it was Charleston.

Here’s my entry for Gamera vs. Zine-Ra, the 50th Anniversary Gamera zine. You still have time to submit - submissions close on July 1st! See the full details here!
I think the comic mostly speaks for itself. Last year I wanted to start a kaiju-based webcomic called The Heavenly Hendrix but was too scared as drawing monster fights among buildings seemed far too difficult. So this was an experiment to see if it was possible and I really enjoyed doing it! Some perhaps more of this stuff in the future.
some photos of the interior of Weeping Flower, Grows in Darkness
Weeping Flower can be purchased on my Bigcartel! I’m mailing out any outstanding orders on Thursday :)
I created this short narrative a couple months ago, but I finally feel ready to share it with you. Despite its length, making this was a laborious process and took me quite some time to put together.
(media: charcoal, graphite and digital)
This story is personal to me, but you can interpret it whatever way you please.
Bernadette the Brave
Bernadette gets lost and scared in a crowd when life is too much. She imagines that the swarms of people around are a forest of trees to cope.
As she walks through the imagined trees, she sees they all have unique faces like the people in the crowd.
Bernadette comes across one in particular with a doorknob. It beacons to her with a golden light. She opens the face and climbs inside.
There she finds a golden world.
This world is wonderous, as if it was made just for Bernadette. It is a place of serenity, safety curiosity, and beauty.
However, back in the forest of faces, danger awaits. Another has found his way into Bernadette’s mind. The danger wields an axe and finds the tree with the golden world.
As he takes his axe to Bernadette’s tree, everything within her world splits, including her body. But from her body comes the source of the golden light. Bernadette holds the power to fight back.
This is your world. You may be small, and It’s okay to be afraid. But know that when fear is crippling and invades your heart, you hold the ultimate power to fight back and conquer.

A new comic from Emily. :)
Ah, Halloween is just around the corner! Once you are stuffed with treats, hunker down on the couch with a blanket, dim the lights and scroll into the haunting work of Emily Carroll.
Check out the longer comic 'The Darkness Presses' for a psychological horror or any of her shorter comics for a quick trick fix. My personal favorite is 'His Face All Red', a spooky story sure keep you up all night.
enjoy.

Let’s get naked!
“We need women’s bodies in our stories, having sex and getting our periods and eating food and doing whatever bodies do, so that the things our bodies do are normalized and present — so that boys don’t grow up thinking women are gross or whores or pigs or any other horrible epithet.” —Lucy Knisley
Some ladies said some really fascinating things about presenting female bodies in comics! I am so proud to be among these artists.
I had no idea who was going to be included in this buzzfeed article about women’s portrayal of their own bodies in autobio comics when I was asked to contribute; turns out it’s all superstars and me mucking up the place! I found everyone’s statements to be inspiring and interesting: finally a buzzfeed piece that isn’t just banal minutiae like “20 things only a 90’s kid born during ABC’s TGIF during the Clinton sex scandal will understand”.
