Many of us know Olive Gardenâs slogan When Youâre Here, Youâre Family. Well, I recently put that to the test.
The tables were wooden and nice to sit at. The chairs were also comfortable. The view wasnât anything special, but there was a pretty cool looking van in the Walmart parking lot that had flames on its sides.Â
I was immediately offered wine, and after admitting I was underage, refused wine. If youâre going to offer me wine, please donât rescind your offer. Itâs common courtesy.
The napkins were probably the highlight. They were cloth and worked really well at cleaning the windows. One waiter told me I didnât have to do that, but I insisted. After all, I like a good, clear view of parking lots. Who doesnât.
Finally, it was time to order. I went with the pizza. The menu said I could pick four toppings, so I chose half portions of eight toppings. There were only seven to choose from, though, so I made one up. ââŚand blorgaspork.â
âSorry? What is blorgaspork?â
âThatâs your job to know, now isnât it.â
After a reasonable wait, my food arrived. It was a really good meal, not exactly overpriced, but not exactly underpriced either. It was just priced.
My waiter soon arrived and asked me if I wanted dessert.Â
âSteve,â I said, âHave a seat.â
He did.
âI have this business idea. And while Iâm here, and weâre family, I was hoping you could give me a loan.â
Steve tried to laugh it off. Like it was some kind of joke. I was offended and he could tell. âSteve, this isnât a joke.â
Steve looked a bit nervous. I grabbed his hands and pinned them to the table. âAre we family or not, Steve.â
âNot in the literal senseâŚâ said Steve. I wasnât going to let him reason his way out of this one.Â
âLook, Steve. I cleaned your windows. Family does that for each other. They clean each othersâ windows. Now, donât you think I deserve that loan? Weâre family, Steve, weâre family.â
Steve handed me 13 bucks. âThanks, Steve.â

okay so this really cool thing happened to me today and i thought i should share it with you guys. so there was a stunning sunset tonight, so i thought i should bring my guitar down to the beach and play a little.
when i was down at the beach, there was this older couple, sitting together on on the rocks, holding hands, watching the sunset.
at first i was self conscience to play in front of them, because iâm not very good, so i just played quietly at first.
as i grew accustomed to their presence, i started to play louder and louder. after playing for about 10 minutes, the couple approached me and complimented me on my playing.
i thought they were just making, asking me things like if i took lessons, how long iâd been playing, things like that.Â
then, a little out of nowhere, the man asked me to play a song for them. i wanted to decline because i didnât want to embarrass myself or disapoint the couple, but the way they were looking at me⌠they were so innocent and sincere i couldnât refuse.
so i played them a quick little song. it wasnât anything crazy, just a quick little picking tune.
after i finished playing, the man just broke into tears. i must have looked at him questionably or something because the woman then said to me that she has a brain tumor and she wasnât going to go through with the treatment plan.
she later when on to tell me about how her and the man had met, how they had fallen in love, where their wedding was. they had been together for 67 years.Â
when she started talking about being diagnosed, i couldnât help it; i just broke down into tears. she told me about how she has 2 children and 5 beautiful grandchildren.
then, she just hugged me. i felt so emotionally attached to this person that i didnât even know⌠it was the weirdest sensation.
she told me she was so thankful that i had player for her, and that she will think of me before she goes.
i was honestly at a loss for words⌠i still am sort of. i am so blessed that i was able to play for these peopleâŚÂ
it was just a really inspirational moment. this lady i donât even know⌠who is not going to make it and knows that the time she has left is limited⌠to think that she would spend some of that precious time listening to me?
and even though she knows she is not going to make it, she looked so⌠satisfied. she looked genuinely happy to be sitting at the beach, watching the sunset with the man she loves, and listening to some random teenager play guitar.
i think itâs gonna be one of those things that changes me. i started comparing my own problems to hers⌠and they just donât compare.
sure, there will always be stress and sadness caused by a mulitude of different things, but i know my problems can never even come close to rivalling this womanâs situation.
the couple left before i could even ask for their names. i had planned on sending them flowers or something, but now i canât.
itâs just crazy to think that in one minute, i am listening to this coupleâs life story, and in the next moment, theyâre just gone.
i hope somehow these people really understand how much their story and actions meant to me. it was truly an amazing experience.
I know what it feels like, and it sucks, it really does, when you are up in the middle of the night thinking about the things that youâve suddenly became aware of. The things youâre missing out on right now, and all the people who are not close to you anymore, and all of the good times that will never happen again, and all the people who have meant the world to you who have forgotten about you forever, and you get this awful feeling thatâs kind of like a mix between loneliness and nostalgia.

Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything itâs cracked up to be. Thatâs why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you donât risk anything, you risk even more.

I hope we both find ourselves this summer and I hope the roads lead us back to each other.

You donât know anyone at the party, so you donât want to go. You donât like cottage cheese, so you havenât eaten it in years. This is your choice, of course, but donât kid yourself: itâs also the flinch. Your personality is not set in stone. You may think a morning coffee is the most enjoyable thing in the world, but itâs really just a habit. Thirty days without it, and you would be fine. You think you have a soul mate, but in fact you could have had any number of spouses. You would have evolved differently, but been just as happy. You can change what you want about yourself at any time. You see yourself as someone who canât write or play an instrument, who gives in to temptation or makes bad decisions, but thatâs really not you. Itâs not ingrained. Itâs not your personality. Your personality is something else, something deeper than just preferences, and these details on the surface, you can change anytime you like. If it is useful to do so, you must abandon your identity and start again. Sometimes, itâs the only way. Set fire to your old self. Itâs not needed here. Itâs too busy shopping, gossiping about others, and watching days go by and asking why you havenât gotten as far as youâd like. This old self will die and be forgotten by all but family, and replaced by someone who makes a difference. Your new self is not like that. Your new self is the Great Chicago Fireâoverwhelming, overpowering, and destroying everything that isnât necessary.
Julien Smith, The Flinch (via wordsnquotes)
