A painting of a woman who, out of spite from a broken heart, turns her romantic rival into a monster.

"Retrato de la esposa del artista con sombrero" (1909), pintado por el artista alemán August Macke. La protagonista del cuadro es Elisabeth Erdmann-Macke, la esposa del artista y su musa frecuente, a quien retrató más de 200 veces durante su matrimonio.

Creada el mismo año en que se casaron, la obra destaca el interés temprano de Macke por el color audaz y expresivo y la intensidad emocional, influenciado por sus viajes y admiración por artistas como Matisse y VanGogh.

Giorgione never finished “The Sleeping Venus”. After his death around 1510, Titian completed the painting, and scholars still debate which parts belong to each artist.

What is certain is its influence. The relaxed, reclining pose became one of the most famous in Western art, inspiring artists from Titian to Velázquez, Goya and Manet. More than 500 years later, the painting still feels remarkably calm and modern. Today, “The Sleeping Venus” is in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
