Summary:

After a minor injury, Eddie learns that for years Buck - who was lost in an accident years before - is his guardian angel. Now able to see and interact with Buck, the two develop an unusual and deep bond. One Eddie doesn't want to let go of.

Snippet:

“How are you real?” He whispers.

Buck whips back around to look at him. His eyes are wide with concern.

“You’ve never been able to see me before,” Buck says. “Why can you see me now?”

“What are you?” Eddie asks.

“Oh, honestly,” Buck looks himself over. “I don’t know, man. I’m just kind of stuck with you. I think I’m your guardian angel.”

“My… My what?” Eddie asks.

“You know… You’re about to get shot, I push you out of the way. That sort of thing.”

Wait… All the injuries Eddie has miraculously avoided. They all happened after Buck’s accident. They were all so unlikely. So lucky.

He's on the phone with Buck lamenting about how both he and Chris want to come back to L.A. but he just can't afford that, not with a mortgage on a house that no one in their right mind would buy.

Then on his next 48 off there's a knock at his door. He isn't expecting anyone, Chris is spending the day with Sophia, Eddie was planning on making a go at replacing the floorboards that are literally rotting in his room, but that can wait. He answers the door and Buck, Bobby, Hen, and Chim are all standing there. Buck's got his hands tucked into his pockets and a bashful smile on his face when he says, "Seemed like you could use some backup."

Eddie just kind of stare at them. but mostly at Buck. Because he's 800 miles away from L.A., from his family that he built there, and instead of letting him suffer and try to dig himself out on his own, they're all here.

Bobby smiles and holds up his tool box, Chim shrugs and says, "Just make sure there's no flying rebar and put me to work." and Hen smiles at him and says she's got dibs on anything that needs to be hit with a sledge hammer.

So they all come in and Bobby and Hen get working on the rotten floorboards and Chimney takes one look at the state of the bookshelves (shelves still broken, books still in boxes on the floor) and decides that's his project.

Then it's just Buck and Eddie standing there in the living room and Buck's getting a little fidgety so he says, "I-I know this is probably a lot, b-but I mentioned that you and Chris miss L.A. and the reason you can't move back is this stupid house and they all asked when we could come help get you home."

It hits Eddie right there in the living room of this house that will never be his home. He loves this man. He loves all of the 118, loves them like they're family, but Buck is different. Buck is – Buck is Buck. And what's he supposed to do except kiss him?

Chim lets them have their moment but then he says, "Pretty sure the faster we work the faster you two will be able to do that all the time."

And they both laugh and smile and Buck kisses Eddie again just because he can. And then Eddie grabs his to do list and hands it to Buck (must to Bobby, Hen, and Chim's chagrin).

A little bit of angst for your Sunday. :) I'm proud of this one!

Summary:

Just as Eddie is planning to move to El Paso, Chris gets into a fight at school, and Helena and Ramon decide they've had enough, sending Chris home.

Snippet:

Christopher eavesdrops. 

Of course he does. For one thing, she’s shouting, so it’s not even hard. For another thing, she’s shouting about him, so it’s only fair that he listens. He stands in his cracked open doorway and listens. 

“...Your father and I are getting too old for this, Eddie. We can’t do this,” she’s saying. 

So she called his dad. He figured she would. He’s not sure how that makes him feel. On the one hand, who cares? Dad’s not here to get him in trouble. Dad’s not the one making the rules. But on the other hand… He’s mad at his father. He really is. Nevertheless, the idea that he’s out there in Los Angeles disappointed in Chris? It still stings. 

“We tried to fix this for you, Eddie,” his grandmother continues. “We really did. But he’s beyond our help. You have to take him back.”

Christopher goes rigid. They’re… They’re sending him back? They’re done with him? They told him. When they came here, they told him this was always a safe place for him. That he didn’t have to go back if he didn’t want to. That his dad couldn’t make him. What happened to that?

We literally start off with the ghost of Shannon reading Christopher the letter she left for him. A letter Eddie gave to his son in hopes to somehow reunite them. The ghost itself doesn’t appear to Eddie, just to Chris, and we – the audience – can tell it’s her voice that they’re trying to emulate, considering that ‘I can’t remember her voice anymore.’

On that same episode we see the ghost of Athena’s and Bobby’s fears. I know it sounds like I’m reaching but think about it. Athena’s haunted by the fear of having made a mistake by marrying, while Bobby’s afraid he pressured her into it. It looms over them like some kind of shadow, pushing them apart.

Later, with the bi Buck’s arc, we see the ghost of Buck himself. Not the same way we did in the coma dream, though, rather like a devil on his shoulder. A ‘ghost’ in the way of a metaphorical reflection of his inner struggles to finally free himself. It looks for a while there like he’s haunted by the expectations of others and the weight of societal norms, all of which return to him, considering no one else is imposing them (and that’s literally what Tommy tells him: ‘no one’s looking at us, Evan.’).

By the wedding ep, the concept of ghost gets more literal. We see Chimney struggle between his life and his death, represented by Kevin and Doug, respectively. This is insane, actually, because it happens in so little time, but it’s so intense. Doug tries to drag him into the abysm, threatening him with the pain of the woman he can’t remember just yet, but loves to bits. His brother, on the other hand, leads him back home; their home.

Finally, we have Eddie literally hallucinating the ghost of his dead wife and projecting her onto another woman — whilst cheating on his current girlfriend btw. This one’s bonkers actually and it’s so clear to me that Eddie’s not well and that he’s living a delusion that’s gonna come back to bite him in the ass eventually. But alas, it’s the clearest form of ghost we’ve seen so far.
