this is the only community that doesnt tell me who i have to be. especially in regards to my own mental health. everyone understands what its like to be sick here.

i actually dont think hantavirus will cause anything, and any hope is just fearmongering.

ive studied up on the virological components of hantavirus, but in short, there are a few reasons it isnt optimized for pandemic potential.

the way it replicates isnt optimized (it's a -ssRNA virus, +ssRNA viruses replicate faster.)

transmission requires sustained contact with the infected individual.

its TOO deadly. viruses with a 1-5% mortality rate are in the sweet spot, as any higher will usually result in the virus killing itself out. the best example i have for this is COVID vs. SARS, which are the same species of virus (SARS-CoV) and share 80% of their genome. SARS had a mortality rate of 10-15%, which meant with human involvement, it could easily be contained. COVID has a mortality rate of 1%, meaning its much harder to contain.
