The sun filters through the tent window, painting the seat in warm, golden streaks. I glance at him, my boy, sitting there in his colorful onesie, the soft crinkle of his fresh diaper barely audible. His fingers trace the fuzzy ear of his teddy, his lips moving in a silent conversation only the two of them understand. A pacifier bobs gently between his teeth, and his eyes are bright, alive in a way I’ve never seen them when he was buried in spreadsheets or lost in the weight of adult expectations.
For a second, my chest tightens. Did I take too much from him? The thought slithers in, unwelcome but persistent. His books, his job, his sharp mind... all of it traded for the simplicity of stuffed animals and the security of a thick, snug diaper. I stole his maturity, his independence, his potty training, even his ability to fall asleep without his plush bear tucked under his arm. Was it fair? Was it right?
I watch his thumb press into the teddy’s paw, his other hand patting his padded bottom absently, as if reassuring himself it’s still there. The guilt coils tighter. Maybe I should have let him choose. Maybe I should have given him a chance to find happiness on his own terms, as a "big boy."
But then he giggles. A real, unguarded sound, so pure it makes my throat ache. His whole body wiggles with delight as he points at something outside the window, his voice muffled around the pacifier. And just like that, the doubt dissolves.
I know, deep down, that he never would have found this joy on his own. Not like this. Not with the same unshakable, childlike wonder. The world was too heavy for him before, too full of expectations and exhaustion. And now? Now he’s light. Free. Happy in a way that feels almost sacred.
My fingers twitch toward him, itching to ruffle his hair, to pull him closer. This is where he belongs. This is where he’s meant to be. And if that makes me the villain in someone else’s story? So be it. Because in this moment, with the sun on his face and his heart so full it’s practically glowing, I know I made the right choice.
