When I first moved to this neighborhood I got off on the wrong foot with this one old man that lives at the end of the street. It started when I had a small house warming party. He complained about the noise even though it wasn’t that loud and ended pretty early. On a different occasion he yelled at me because he smelled weed outside and swore it was me. If I smoke it’s always indoors because of the amount of kids that live near me so it most definitely wasn’t but alas. He said if he smelled it again he would call the police, demanded I show him I have a medical card for it, and then called me a weed head when I refused. Also for like the first two months I lived here I forgot that they did street cleaning the first of every month and he would bang on my door at the crack of dawn to tell me to move my car out of the street and would say stuff like “why have a garage if you aren’t going to use it?” but that’s when I knew he was just a lil grouchy and not actually a bad person. He could’ve easily let them give me a ticket instead but didn’t. I always smiled and said hi to him if I ever saw him during a walk/run and he completely ignored me the first few times but he eventually warmed up to me and would say hi back. Sometimes I’d get a half smile. As I walked past his house today I waved like I always do and he called me over and I was like. Sigh. What’d I do now. But instead he asked if I wanted to clip a couple magnolias from his tree that’s in full bloom. We then had an actual cordial conversation for once. He told me his name is Scott and that he lives alone because his kids are grown and his wife passed away 8 years ago. Her name was Joyce. Before I left he told me that once the magnolias dried up that instead of throwing them away I could boil the petals and make tea and that’d I’d sleep like a baby. He said he learned that from her. They are the size of my head and smell divine btw. I think I’ll arrange them in an ikebana vase my first gifted me at said house warming party. Full circle moment!
