"Ancient mariners would, doubtless, say the same about crustaceans which live in the void of space, and yet... they exist," T'yel pointed out.
At the explanation, she stared at him, processing that slowly. "Do not... press... your buttons?" Another pause. "is that not the purpose of buttons? To be pressed? If I understand, would the better phrasing not be... 'do not press my buttons at the incorrect time'...?"
No. This was not relevant. She forced herself to no be distracted by idioms, as interesting as that line of thought was. She turned back to the case and declared, "It is clever, however."
She considered the method of eating... thought about it longer... Compared it the animals she knew, which were admittedly restricted to Ni'Var. But two obvious parallels presented themselves.
"There is an insect on Ni'Var, the a'lazb, which resembles a tiny glass spider. It drains the blood from its victims with its fangs, but it is a silicate creature and subsists on the copper it extracts from it." She looked back at him uncertainly. "There are also photonic insects which subsist on energy... in a similar way as Button did to your station. Perhaps this creature, like the a'lazb, only incidentally drains its victims, and actually survives on cellular energy."
