âhey you know, your blocking might actually be getting better, surprisinglyâ you joke in a playful tone. the two of you are walking home after his practice because for as long as youâve been alive, youâre neighbors.
âas if you could ever play a sport. shut up, stinky.â he retorts in true tsukishima fashion. to outsiders, your friendship with this mean, monotone giant makes no sense. youâre charismatic and charming, and part of the fibre arts club while heâs irritable, unfriendly and a volleyball player. honestly you donât really know why youâve stayed friends for so long but surprisingly it works. the two of you have always clicked in a way thatâs different from anyone else, despite your distinct personalities.
âhey, iâm not the one that just had practice though, am i? i know youâre not calling me stinky you pool of sweatâ you chuckle and continue on the route when you hear someone call out from behind you. oh, itâs a classmate! you dash over to her to chat, ignoring tsukishimaâs groan from behind you. he hates when you do this, always stopping to talk to a classmate he couldnât care less about. he really wishes you werenât so popular and you would just focus on him for once⊠he shakes his head in disgust at that last thought and starts stalking away.
you donât notice until itâs been a few minutes and tsukiâs already a few blocks away. you quickly say your goodbyes and try your best to sprint and catch up to him. bad idea. thereâs a reason you donât play any sports. you can see tsukishima walking, not to far away from you, when your legs give out and you trip, right onto your stomach. ouch! you sit up and assess the damage, which is pretty minimal but youâre still bleeding. your knees and hands are scratched up pretty bad and it stings but otherwise youâre okay.
you look up and thereâs a rocket coming right at you. oh wait, no thatâs just tsukishima. heâs running right at you, faster than youâve ever seen him run in games? he reaches you and crouches down and looks at you with the most urgency heâs ever had in his life.
âare you okay? why the hell were you running, you know you canât run!â he scolds you in the way a loving father would. itâs weird. has he always been this concerned about you? you donât realize how long youâve been staring at him for until he looks up at you and stares back. tsuki has really pretty eyes, you note, like a warm, golden, sunset-like brown. why havenât you noticed them before?
eventually tsukishima is the one to end it by clearing his throat,
âclimb on, iâll get you home.â
he kneels in front of you, obviously intending for you to get on his back. you silently climb on, not quite sure why youâre suddenly feeling shy around your best friend of over a decade and a half. he grips your thighs and hoists you up a little higher on his back and silently starts walking. slowly but surely, the two of you are walking down the same path youâve taken hundreds of times before but today feels different.
for some reason youâre unable to open your mouth and talk tsukiâs ear off about the most irrelevant thing that happened to you today, and the warm blush creeping up on your face is confusing you even more. tsukishima used to carry you all the time like this when you were younger, why does this feel different now? not knowing what to say, for the first time ever, you rest your head down on tsukishimaâs shoulder. he lets out a quiet sigh and doesnât utter a word either. the two of you walk together in an unfamiliar yet comfortable silence all the way home âĄ
