Color is an essential element of Gilbert & George’s artistic style. The duo, who have been making art together since 1967, use bold, saturated colors expressively or symbolically to set the mood of their pictures. In Sting-Land, the artistic collaborators and life partners are shown gazing across radiant verdure under a blood-red, tumultuous sky. Gilbert & George developed their unique technique in the 1980s, which enabled them to create grander, more complex works like Sting-Land. Based on detailed sketches, the artists arrange negatives and expose them onto photographic papers mounted together.
