I’m getting back into miniature painting, but slowly. I don’t game much these days, as I’ve said in the past, so painting armies/boardgames has only really the appeal of painting, and I’m a project-driven person. So I’ve been thinking how to kickstart my interest in minis again, and struck upon the idea of translating MtG art/creatures that grab my attention into miniature form. It’d give me a big conversion challenge, and also a clear endgoal & inspiration. And I do love translating things from concept into a tangible form. Currently (because I’m a sucker for Shadows Over Innistrad/New Phyrexia), my frontrunners are: Unimpeded Trespasser

But with so many, it’s just a drop in the water of potential ideas. Still.. I like this idea. I may run with it.
Some Reaper Bones critters in various states of not-yet-completion. The yetis will be excellent for Frostgrave, though I think I need a few more washes to get the fur right. The River Troll I went for a more jungle look. Not sure if the palette will work out there, but time will tell. It’s always hard getting past that WIP mid-stage of “God this paint job looks ugly I’ve ruined it haven’t I” to actually seeing what the end result looks like (usually: not ruined). Put some green stuff around the troll’s base, planning on giving them a swampy, wetlands/jungle/bayou-looking base. The yetis will have snow, of course.
Favorite part of my trip to Minneapolis:
Asking the GW employee, in front of my tiny mother-in-law, if they had a box of skulls. They didn’t. :(
The best part, though, was the poor employee, who didn’t know what to make of us both. He just sort of gingerly (but kindly!) said, “do you.. know what we do here?”

After a period of “I never play tabletop games, so why am I doing this” I’m back in the saddle. I enjoy painting miniatures- having a goal in sight, a reason, is often a prime motivator for me creatively, but it doesn’t mean I should give up on something I enjoy when I lack a Grand Project or end goal past the activity itself. So have some scenery from the Reaper Miniatures graveyard set, along with Shanys the Shadow from Rackham’s short-lived but wonderfully crafted Confrontation game. All are WIP at the moment, but.. It feels good to be back.
So here we are, my first try at a Sylvaneth “4 seasons” army is over ! It’s been over for a few months now… assembling and painting these models took me roughly 2 months, each time a new league phase (lasting 2 weeks) started I did a new seasonal batch, typically with 1 hero, 1 unit of dryad and one extra… here are a few close-ups of my seasonal Sylvaneth.

As you can see, the Winter season is only one unit : the league pewtered out in the end and I jumped onto another project rather than painting a last piece that wouldn’t see table time. I’m nevertheless amazed by the fact that I cleared all my backlog of Sylvaneth, except for 1 Treelord and 1 Spirit of Durthu !
I admit that I’m really proud of myself, not only by its look but also by the time it took me to complete this task. These models are gorgeous and easy to paint. Even if having that many models seems daunting at first, breaking it down into four quarters with different color schemes really helped to avoid boredom.
On top of being pleasant to the eye, this army is a lot of fun to play with very specific ways to move across the board, and jump at the enemy from (almost) unexpected angles. They are on my shelves for now, but I’ll get them back onto the battlefield as soon as possible !
Skill, dedication & an incredible theme all coming together in harmony. That’s something truly special.
Primaris and the Space Wolves Update
Well that answers that then…
So why can’t Space Wolf sergeants take a power sword or better yet a frost sword..?
Also… There are no power swords OR Chainswords on the sprues for the Intercessor squads..?

The Power Sword is but no Chainsword… Also again not feeling good about the options on the datasheet not being available in the kit box…

Personally, I’m happy Deathwatch has the option to put either one on there.
That’s true, I just think that if a datasheet has the option to equip a model in a certain way, those parts should be on the sprues for that kit…
I’m still grumpy about not being able to build my 30k Space Wolves with their stock wargear.
Same feeling here, if models have options available then they should be present in the kits. I’m still a bit put off that the Kharadron Overlords Arkonaut Company sprues give you enough pieces to arm the models with either 10 swords or 10 axes, but only 1 of each special weapon. Which is weird because they do not have close combat weapon options, its purely aesthetic, whereas they do have the ability to have 3 of the same special weapon. Could have fit a bunch more special weapons in the kit instead of having 10 unnecessary hand weapons on the sprue.
I had a similar problem with tyranids. Like 3 units literally had no model! The mycetic spore (which gws was so salty about losing a court case against a third party company making a stand in that they quickly dropped a new codex removing the mycetic spore entirely (because punishing your loyal customers because you couldnt be assed to release a model you have rules for, which is LITERALLY the EXACT OPPOSITE of how you veiw your company, is a winning buisness model)) and the tervigon spring to mind, i think harpies where never really released either, and where so poorly explained that no one knew if they where warriors with wings, raveners with wings, both, or neither.
Ugh yes, I totally remember that codex. Tervigon, Tyrannofex, Harpy, Parasite of Mortrex, Doom of Malantai, Mycetic Spores, etc… Everyone spent so much time trying to make/find custom versions of these models because about 30% of units in the codex didn’t actually have a GW kit. Then GW decided to fix it by just demolishing the Tyranid army into uselessness, removing a ton of units and options with zero benefits. Sure they tried to bring out a bunch of expansions books and extra models later on (Toxicrene/Maleceptor, actual Mycetic spore kit), but they were ultimately just too little to really help mitigate the limiting rules and options.
I could probably write a full encyclopedia on how badly I think GW handled Tyranids for the past few years :\ Anyways, at least now my Hive Tyrants and Genestealers have a 5++ save, my Trygon’s special rules are actually use able, and my troops units wont LITERALLY KILL THEMSELVES FOR NO REASON when out of synapse range!
Ohgosh I remember all this. I’ve still got my custom Tervigon sat in a box somewhere. It’s a bit.. Geiger-ish? But we were already dead-set on a locust/desert theme for our army, so the bright colours don’t really accent the design well.

Aaand here’s the first stage of Spitfire-Biker-Mook, with the jewelry thread and blister-pack plastic (unfortunately made a bit matte by mess with the superglue, but it’ll be hidden in the end).
Thinking this will work out fine, but for later plastic ‘spray’ cutouts I’ll cut a slit in the cork and use PVA.
Next, to repaint in where the brown of the cork shows, and start layering in the heavy gel.

Aha, thankyou. It’s good for a very sillhouette-based anime effect, but I didn’t like it so it got ripped off of this particular model. ;w;
I’m gonna go with more + longer jewellry thread (always. always more thread) around that area instead and use the stalks as basic-structure for the heavy gel to hold onto, possibly with some basic-triangle-stalks of blister plastic mixed in. Painting gel onto these either made the ‘splash out’ parts too thick & unweildy looking, or stayed as a very “I was a cut-out piece of plastic once.” look. TLDR: It doesn’t look.. Liquidy enough for me? But if you’re going for a stylized look I can totally see it working. Let me know if you use it, I’d love to see. ^^

And here's how the heavy-gel rain dries 24 hours later- crystal clear. As you can see, the rings would've needed more layering up to be distinctive (there wouldn't be rings on such a rugged surface as this anyway, but certainly on the city bases), but this feels like a solid foundation to move forward on.
Another layer in, and I can start playing about a bit more rather than laying down foundation.Top left & middle are what I’m focusing on: attempts at splashes, One without extra thread for structure (left) and one with (middle). Despite supergluing tiny bits of thread to the base of other tiny bits of thread being Unfun, “With” won hugely- takes way less time/layers, and able to be much more intricate/accurate; more structure means you need less mass to hold it together, so can work thinner. Also easier to maintain that hollow space inside the splash.
This is useful! I think I’ll stop here and start working on it for real on one of the bikers soon- I’m confident I know I can get the results I wanted with the techniques I had in mind now.
Speaking of the JSA Bikers, how’re they doing? They’re coming along fine, though my particular method of getting high-sheen without metallics/gloss for it takes an age. It’s relaxing in a way, though, so I don’t mind. The real trick is getting the contrast high while keeping enough cherry red on teh model to make it clear that’s the colour of the vehicle/armour. (What I do mind is my past self layering on the basecoat with quite so much, er, wanton enthusiasm- Thin your paints, folks!)
There are others, but these two are the furthest-along; bottom dude is prettymuch done paintwise (see previous post for what comes next), he just needs some shading/highlighting on his black under-armour leather stuff, and some sharper highlights on his gun.
Okay, so here’s the part where my JSA biker warband project gets super ambitious. I think(?) I’ve mentioned this before, but the plan has always been to give this warband the rainy neon cyberpunk night-city the minis so clearly deserve. The roads/pavements/gutters/etc are a start, and making the lighting/shadows (contrast) on the shiny, shiny motorcycles as stark as possible has been good for further giving the look, but the major hurdle and biggest visual effect has always been this: Getting the rain right. I don’t just want them wet; I want big, anime raindrops plopping down around them. I want their souped-up motorbikes sending plumes of water up around them as they speed through the city’s highways. I want raindrops pattering in sleets across an oblivious spider tank as it sits, silently monitoring a neon lit market square. So this post is me documenting my process of trying to get that effect.

Another absolutely epic battle with the Hobbit SBG campaign. The final battle where the armies of Middle Earth attack Gondor to capture Arwen. The terrain was custom built by a friend of the campaign owners and made this battlefield one of the coolest I’ve ever played on!
