"I dare you to try."
"Do you always get close?"
"You’re pushing my limits."
"Stop looking at me like that."
"I’m losing control here."
"You have no idea, do you?"
"I can’t resist you anymore."
"Stay back, or don’t."
"I know what you want."
"This is getting dangerous now."
"You’re too tempting for me."
"I shouldn’t want this, but…"
"I don’t play fair, remember?"
"Careful, you’re testing me."
"You’re just making it worse."
"You’re too close for comfort."
"Do you always push buttons?"
"Stop before I kiss you."
"You’re making it too hard."
"I can’t stop thinking about you."
"I want you too much."
"You know exactly what you’re doing."
"I’m not playing games here."
"You’ve crossed the line now."
"Keep pushing, and you’ll regret it."
"This is dangerous, isn’t it?"
"I’m trying not to care."
"Don’t make me regret this."
"You’re playing with fire."
"You don’t know what’s coming."
"I shouldn’t be this close."
"We’re getting dangerously close now."
"I can feel the heat."
"Don’t test me right now."
"I want you too badly."
"Don’t make me chase you."
"You’re distracting me, you know."
"I won’t fall for this."
"I want you, but…"
"What do you want from me?"
"I’ll never give in."
"I’m trying not to care."
"You’re playing with my patience."
"Don’t make this harder, please."
"I can’t stop this feeling."
"I’m already in too deep."
"You won’t walk away unscathed."
"You’re walking a fine line."
"I’m trying to stay calm."
"What are you doing to me?"

Peter Birkhäuser, Moira, 1965
“Give the old sod a hug?” //fatherxfear
"Oh, fine."
She disguises her delight by preemptively squashing her face, fully anticipating being crushed into his ribcage.
"Just mind the hem on this. The village children recruited me for dressup."
"You look like some sort of long-lost princess," Kozmotis chuckles, striding forward to draw Katherine tightly against his chest; her prognosis was pretty accurate. "C'mere, Anastasia....!"
His sharp chin rests on the nest of her ruddy curls.
"...d'you think they'll ever understand me as a different being from the one that....hurt their bear, terrorized them, gave them their first taste of anything other than wonder and happiness...? I stay out of sight for a reason, but I suppose I dare hope."
Katherine frowns into his sternum.
"In fact?"
She wondered... Only, he seemed so sane, now. Did he really not know how much time had passed?
"They kept you up as a story. To their children, and their children's children. I know, it comes as a shock, doesn't it? That even people in Santoff Claussen do it, die," she said.
"But! But I got a handle on how. Everyone knew who you were before the fearlings."
Before Pitch, you mean, said her brain. Idiot. Why not? Just hand him the crisis of self and tell him to call you when it's over, why don't you.
That's what you'd do, if you were him.
Katherine shoved that line of thought violently into a metaphysical box, ignoring its cries for mercy.
"You know," she said, "Dress-up time could use someone with a talent for shapeshifting. Throw around some shadows, make someone's hair look like a crown, and you've got yourself the beginnings of a loyal band of scallawags. They'll want swords," she added, "but I encourage you to make them in silly shapes. Kids these days love a silly shape.
"What do you say, Da? Wanna play?"
Sketchbook Log: Years later I will return the favor.
❛ what do you want? ❜

In theory, two people with so much in common should have been friends. The Muse and Mother Goose. The goddess of inspiration and the devotee. The headwaters and the tributary. The spigot and the bucket beneath it. The company founder, and the middle manager of whom they were always reminded of some better-performing predecessor.
'Well,' Katherine thought, 'Polite colleagues, at least.'
Most colleagues didn't share custody of a father figure, and family drama didn't belong in the office.
Katherine, brave Katherine, shuffled the deck of possible answers crowding the front of her brain.
"I think I'm lost," she said at last. "Perhaps you could tell me the way out of your realm, so I might not impose upon more of my lady's time."
'Very professional, not cowardly at all.'

Mother Goose, nose bent an unhealthy dearth of inches from her page, lifts her head. She smiles softly, and unbends herself, joints creaking in chorus with her antique chair.
"I hope," she says, rolling her shoulders, then her neck, extending her arms forward and bending out her fingers with a chorus of sickening pops. "Yikes, that one hurt." She shakes out the hand with spidery black tattoos on the fingers, lines of black ink intertwined with silvery-white scars.
"I should probably hope that what you say next goes something like," Katherine puts one hand over her heart, the other on her spine, and frowns with all her might, "'But it does my old, feeble heart good to see how you've grown out of that.'"
Chuckling, she bends forward and makes a wailing moan.
"'I cAHn't take it, Kitty! Won't you consider my poor nerves!'"
She grins toothily at him. Leaning back, she lets her gaze wander over the homey clutter of her parlor, at the maps, and trinkets, and glowing objects of ambiguous utility.
"The office of the Main Character really is best reserved for the young and tragic. Which makes it such a shame," she crinkles her eyes at him, "that we're both such terrible examples in that department."
