Today we got to meet Tank up on the South Hill just relaxing enjoying the sun. We were installing attic insulation in his parents house, a 1960 rancher that had its original insulation! Energy costs have changed in 63 years so adding insulation will help keep those power bills at bay. If you are on Avista electric or gas to run your furnace and your insulation is an R11 or less then you are eligible for the rebate from Avista which typically foots about 75% of the bill. Blown in Cellulose in an attic is prescribed to be roughly 14” deep to reach the current energy code of an R49 for our climate code. We just brought the attic up to an R49 by blowing roughly 10” of 100% Green Fiber Sanctuary cellulose over about 5” of old blow in fiberglass. Bryce and Johnny just finishing up a job for another Inland Power member taking advantage of the incredible rebates currently being offered. We brought the home up to an R49 (14.3”) with blown cellulose after baffling and a thorough inspection. There a few things to look for during an attic insulation inspection and most of them have to do with ventilation. Bathroom fans need to be vented outside the home so that the heat and moisture don’t end up in the attic. Additionally soffit vents need to be clear so that air can move through the soffit vent and up through roof cans or a ridge vent. When roof cans and the ridge vent are buried under a foot of snow (like right now) excess heat from an under insulated attic transfers from the living space below up into the attic and with the upper vents being blocked it prevents the air movement is stagnant so heat builds up and causes snow melt. The snow melt then runs down the roof and refreezes once it gets to frozen gutters. Consequently the additional moisture in the attic makes the roof sheeting prone to mold or mildew and eventually rot. Typically, if you have cellulose, you don’t need to worry about mold or moisture because it contains a detergent that makes it mold, mildew, fire, and pest resistant. In some instances water is actually added to cellulose to do a wet blow for walls in new construction. The same is not true for fiberglass and because of the porous nature of fiberglass, mold spores actually spread quicker. If your fiberglass get wet it needs to be removed and replaced. Today we had the pleasure of insulating the attic of an Inland Power customer out in Newman Lake. She had a little less than 4” of cellulose and unfortunately her ductwork was strapped up in the rafters so we weren’t able to bury it in cellulose. Unfortunately this means that the heat loss through the ductwork will continue to heat that attic space above the insulation because the ductwork isn’t typically rated very high so she will probably continue to see snowmelt and icicles/ice dams. Fortunately the house will be comfortable now and she should see a 20-30% decrease in her energy consumption. Today we got to meet Darwin, a friendly golden retriever with a heart of gold while we were at his parents house to do the attic. The home was built in 1990 and started with an R24 which is pretty common for that year of home. We got to meet this angel of a border collie on a job we were doing for an Inland Power customer out about 10 miles south of Cheney. The home was built in 1947 and like most homes built in the time period it had just under 3” of fiberglass batt. We installed an additional 11” of Green Fiber blow in Sanctuary cellulose to just above an R49. Eligible Inland Power, Avista, Modern, Vera and Kootenai Electric Cooperative customers receive a rebate up to $2.30/sq ft so in some cases the insulation project is completely paid for by the power company.
