Tony stared at him blankly, probably for too long, trying to find the answer that would be the most appropriate to this situation. Heād imagined countless scenarios about their reunion, that damn flip phone in his hands, his engineer mind once again trying to solve the problem as if it was a simple mechanical issue. And heād spent nights thinking, about what he would say, what he would do and how annoyingly tragic it would be despite all his efforts to try and keep it as casual as possible.
But with Steve finally in front of him, looking at him the way he did, with pleading eyes that were glistening with tears, everything he ever thouht of felt improper, unfittingā¦
Completely wrong, in fact.
āI did.ā Was all he could think of that wasnāt too heartfelt and that sort of suited. Only at first, though, because soon enough, he judged his tone too cold and shit, this wasnāt what he wanted to sound like. āThe thing is I-ā
No, too peronnal, too sincere, there was no āIā in this, he wasnāt doing it for himself, not at all, he had to say something else.
āTruth is we need you, Cap.ā
Yes, that was more like it. āWeā, the Avengers, the world, they needed Steve, not Tony. But then Steve kept silent, eyes even blurrier, his mouth agape and it was as if he couldnāt talk, as if what Tony said wasnāt what he expected to hear. Or wanted to hear, maybe, which made Tonyās heart wrench and goddammit he didnāt want to get emotional but here they were, and it was too hard, too painful.
Tony lifted his gaze to the man standing in front of him, a little closer than before it seemed. And he saw the suffering, the profound sorrow that darkened Steveās eyes, twisted his expression and strained his body and he wanted to make it better but nothing would come out.
āIām so sorry,ā Steve repeated, hoping to get even just a word from Tony, probably. But what was he supposed to answer after what happened between them ? āI am, I truly am, and if you could just-ā
He let it out. Just like that. And before he could even realise what he had said, Steveās arms were around him. And what a relief it was to feel Steve holding him close, pressing his body against him so tight, as if heād never let go, afraid that Tony would escape his embrace at any given chance. But then again why would he do that, this felt so real, so true and Tony hadnāt realised heād been desperate for Steveās touch this whole time, but now, even through his suit, he could feel the manās muscles twitch under his hands, his heat all around him, his heart beating against his, his warm breath against his ear and god it just felt so good.
Steveās pants filled the air and Tony knew he could also hear the relieved whimpers he was trying to muffle in the manās shoulder but it didnāt matter because after some time, he felt Steveās torso widen against his as he was taking a deep breath, letting out a long and satisfied sigh.
āYou were right when you said I was gonna miss youā he then said, voice shaky and even breaking on the last word. āAnd that there would be a lot of tearsā, he puffed, somehow amused despite the earnestness of the situation, as his right hand pressed Tonyās head against his chest, fingers gripping at dark hair with despair.
Tony couldnāt help chuckling and closed his eyes tight against Steve, once again feeling every bit of his warmth against him, thriving with his every touch. And for he had been keeping it all in since they came apart almost two years ago, two years that had felt like eternity, he just decided to let go .
āOh how Iāve missed you, Steve.ā
So, as you all can see, I am still enjoying my new tablet ! Gotta say, writing this little ficlet felt harder than drawing those twoās reunion but hey, not complaining, I kinda like it in the end. Anyway, I am kind of in a love-hate relationship with Steveās suit, wich is a pain in the ass to draw and will probably hate Tonyās armor even more so Iām keeping it as far away as possible from me for now. Also, tears are hard and I canāt seem to do justice to Evansā bubble butt but I feel like itās a nice try, at least so I hope you guys enjoy it ! If you have any advice or any comment for me, Iāll take it gladly :)
And if thereās a huge probability for us Stony shippers not to get such a heartfelt and dramatically clichĆ© reunion in Infinity War, might as well picture it ourself !
