Do you remember the magic of falling in love for the first time? The first girl I ever really, truly, fully loved still holds a kind of fondness I afford no other. We texted nonstop, and I remember distinctly the panic I felt on days spent away from home in areas with bad cell service, and how I would run about trying to find a strong enough signal for just a moment so I could respond to her never-failing “goodnight.” I remember the texture of her hair, the sound of her laugh, the swing of her feet. I remember the bad parts, too- the confusion, the pining, the internalized homophobia, the awkward questions, the final, violent heartbreak- but mostly I remember her sweetly, little associations that surface with dreamlike clarity: fresh cucumbers, four-leaf clovers, newly-sprung grass, silver bangles, and most of all, her smile: again, and again, and again, and again.
