In my AU world, the writers made Liz more rational and sensible, where she didn’t give a fuck that Red killed “Katarina” in front of her, because she knows to choose the man who’s been there for her since day 1 rather than a sketchy woman who claims to be her mother yet constantly manipulated her and put her daughter in danger.

In my AU world, the writers still gave us the Red/Anne scenes—but without Anne. They gave us Liz and Red in love and enjoying domestic bliss, being happy together, spending relatively normal days after all the years of death and chaos and destruction.

In my AU world, that’s how the show ended:

With no more lies and secrets, but whole truths revealed. With love declared and expressed and shared. With both being each other’s second chance, each other’s future, each other’s light. With them maybe not having bigger lives, but them having each other in their own little world.

The immediate question I had after watching the finale was: what the hell was it all for then?

It’s such a dark and cynical message to send. We get glimpses of her fantasy coming true, we get glimpses of a return to normalcy, we get glimpses of what even could have been a redemption arc.

And then, when it’s made clear that she can’t do what Red has asked of her because after all these years he still means too much to her, then they kill her. And Red gets to watch her die in his arms for a second (!!!) time. How in the world, as a writer, do you not turn the I can’t do it/that’s alright exchange into something hopeful? A setup like that? How do you make Liz’s character suffer for that too?

And cursed, broken Red gets to grieve again because he has ultimately failed his mission of protecting her. She was his whole life. It was all for her. And he failed. And Agnes in the midst of it all is turned into an orphan.
