It will be good to see the old sign back up again. The new sign was fine and the former owners felt the change was necessary for the image they wanted to create for the pub. However, the original sign was unusual and distinctive. Like the stone carvings in the archway between the Guildhall and St Nicholas' Church, the sign aroused curiosity for its story, adding to the mythology that makes a town more attractive to its townspeople and to visitors.
