Despite there not being a ray of sun shining, Couriway wakes up. Blinking in confusion, he reaches for his glasses. His internal alarm clock is never wrong. He has his bird genes to thank for that. However, for this time of year, it would at least be a little bright outside. Couriway rubs his eyes, before quietly stepping out of bed, careful not to disturb his partner who slumbers beside him.

As his feet hit the ground, Couriway hears a light pattering on the roof. Oh, he thinks.

Couriway pads to the window to confirm his suspicions. Sure enough, dark, angry rainclouds stretch across the horizon. He runs his palm along it, not caring about the mark his hand will make later. The roof over his head protects him, yet he still feels chilled to the bone.

Couriway rests his forehead on the glass, watching as his breath fogs up the window pane. He hates the rain. He hates how his feathers absorb every drop of water like a sponge. It takes more than a day for his wings to dry. This period leaves him flightless, with nothing to do other than to wait. He needs to fly like humans need water to live. Maybe that analogy is a little extreme, but Couriway functions his best when he's in the air. He needs to perform at his best always.

A memory flits before him. The sun beams down on the open land. Feinberg's hand clutches his. Fireworks whizz and propel him forward to keep up with Couriway, who is beating his wings hard. They're both breathless from laughter as they fly. Couriway's cheeks hurt from smiling. He wishes, for a selfish moment, that they could do this everyday for the rest of their lives.

Couriway turns around, looking back at Feinberg. One day, the rain will be accompanied by thunder, and Feinberg will take his loyal, seagreen trident to the nearby village. It's too far to go on foot. He will fly alone, his elytra unfazed by the downpour. Couriway balls his fists until his nails dig into his palms enough to hurt.
