As some of you might know, the morning of Monday September 8th, my best friend Erica died of a massive blood clot. She was best known as aformerweapon, tookuptheshield, and brooklynbornwinter, but she also held a number of blogs with me as various other characters and OCs ( thewinterschill, prettymuchablur, crossofselfdenial, tellmewasitreal, and others). She was my mainverse, and the entire reason I even have a Steve muse in the first place. She brought me into the Marvel fandom and I canât imagine losing this community, but if Iâm going to move forward at all I donât want everything Erica meant to me to be pushed aside or forgotten at all. Iâll be keeping the url because she helped me come up with it, but Iâll e archiving this blog and continuing elsewhere. The only threads continued here are directly pertaining to mems and things I owed her, or single-verse reactions to the loss (mentions of death), because I think it might be therapeutic and I really dislike leaving things without closure. That said, ALL THREADS ARE CONSIDERED DROPPED UNTIL YOU TALK TO ME. I will pick up any thread, but you must discuss it with me first. Iâve had Steve for nearly two years and I have many threads going, so itâs hard for me to keep track on my own. I have a couple of asks that Iâll answer on the rebooted blog as a post tagged with your url. If any of you would like to make a clean break with me for any reason, thatâs perfectly fine. Or if youâd like to drop the threads and start fresh thatâs okay with me as well! Thank you all so much for a great nearly-two years, and youâre welcome to follow the new blog.

   â fight. âÂ
â- their past together is lined with scraped knuckles, pinched noses with red smeared back for a cheek, bruises spreading like water colors under ruddy jaws not yet prickled with the threads of a manâs beard. Â
buckyâs laugh stalls, chokes on the last time theyâd come to blows. the scars of his own shouts vine up to block his throat.  his lips flatten.  he dislodges the old, heavy guilt sticking behind his tongue like a scrape of cotton with a forced chuckle.  the engine sputters along with him, shields the strain in the sound. Â
   itâs takenâŚÂ      â- time â-Â
but with a loose throw of his shoulders and the steady sink of steveâs weight behind him, heâs traded mission back for friend. Â so he hoists a smile to fit across his features with teeth shining in the first silver kiss of moonlight. Â and he knocks the motorcycle into gear. Â
âiâd like to see you try,â chuffs out over the growl he nudges from the motor.Â
his ribs fill and bow atop the broad span of hands carved at once from both a stick of charcoal and a shield.  he drops his eyes to where they sit, shoves away the way he remembers them bestâÂ
( outstretched, off the ledge of a train,           through eyes streaked with wind-drawn           tears.  )Â
â- and nips the kickstand with a lift from his heel.Â
âsince youâre ridinâ bitch, iâll let you choose our first stop,â bucky shouts out, weaving them away from the curb.  âwonder if coneyâs got anything left open from back in our day.âÂ
ââsteve laughs because it's really too soon to laugh, the sort of unsteady sound to make a stomach churn because he can still feel the heat of the fire at his back. he remembers waking up cold and alone on the shore with three bullets lodged into his body from the man he called out to across a chasm of memory, his body fighting to heal itself and refusing to let him pass out and escape. ââthey've come far from that place, but sometimes it only feels like a few yards with every inch hard-won ââââbut that doesn't mean steve will ever stop fighting. ââbucky doesn't need to shout, aside from force of habit. not only does his enhanced hearing come in handy, but something inside him is attuned to bucky in a way that makes steve snap to attention every time he speaks. this time, it brings him a smile.
ââ"call me that one more time, see if you ever get the keys again," he says into bucky's ear, the few inches of height advantage he has putting him in the perfect position when he leans close enough. ââhe knows this bike as well as anything, has long become harmonized to the melody of motion only motorcycles can offer. the sway and shift of weight, the rumble under thighs, even the heat radiating from somewhere besides steve for a change, it's all comforting as a lullaby and worrying about the destination no longer occurs to him. ââthe throwback flips his stomach, but not on a sour note. maybe this is a chance to reclaim something once lost. if old memories can be painful and stifling, there's always a breath of clean sea air in making new ones. ââââ"i'm game if you are, buck."
âWhen have you ever known me to give you what you ask for?                          Itâs a whole different game now, Steve.â
ââ"What if I say pretty please? âââââCome on, Barnes. Show me what you've got."
"And what if I don't?"
{ Place one in my inbox - Questions Edition }
âWell then I donât know, Steve.â
ââ"What if I don't want to correct the media? I mean, I understand if you don't like the idea those pictures sent, we can tell them that we're just friends, but I'm not going to apologize for it! The paparazzi stalked us. We didn't ask to be photographed."

âThe disheveled state in which Steve appeared caused Bucky to arch a brow. With tie askew and hair damp, he seemed very much not like Steve, even as the barista found himself wanting to smile at how the man who was always so put together now seemed less than so. His smirk did not falter at the surprise, however minute. If anything, it grew.
âOf course, it took a conscious effort to refrain from beckoning his customer ( he must remind himself ) to lean forward so he might straighten the tie around his neck. He would blame his former experience in the army for such an urge, if only the former sergeant was less aware of how he, himself, stopped following such regulations a few months before being discharged.
âIt was when Steve planted a smile on his face and the purple beneath his eyes became more obvious that Bucky realized how the grin was forced as compared to the one heâs used to seeing. âDo I have to guess or would you care to enlighten me over a cup of coffee?â Itâs asked with a grin, hoping to inspire a genuine smile in turn.
ââHow about a shot of espresso with your regular then?â He transitions smoothly, hardly giving Steve the chance to answer his previous question ( definitely not flirting ). âTrust me on this one, it wonât muddle the tasteâŚÂ Iâd suggest a pastry too, if you want to avoid a headache later on.â Bucky paused then, looking to Steve, a breathless laugh passing through his lips. âThink of it like alcohol. Never drink on empty stomach. â Unless youâre in good company that is.â
ââBucky's smile tugged at his heart the way it always did, so adorably crooked and teasingly genuine it made Steve warm from the inside out even on a day like today. Still, he was a little startled at Bucky's concern, color rising in his cheeks from something other than windchill. He was unused to being looked after in any way, and it was both a little embarrassing and incredibly heartwarming to receive that kind of consideration from Bucky. ââThe reply was swiftly cut off by Bucky's suggestion, but all of his suggestions received a warm, slowly genuine smile. He wasn't sure if Bucky meant while he was handing Steve his usual coffee, or if he was actually suggesting sitting down together and talking over coffeeâjust the thought of getting to talk to Bucky without the counter separating them flushed the back of his neck. ââThere, that was two times in the space of a minute Bucky mentionedâwhat? It wasn't an invitation by any means. It could certainly just be friendly, well-meant advice. Generic concern for a loyal customer. Maybe it only felt like Bucky was trying to get to know him. Steve's hands tucked shyly into his pockets and he took a step closer to the counter, considering. His eyes roamed over Bucky's face a moment, briefly seeing him from the long-buried artist's standpoint. He was gorgeous, with classical features and a sinfully curved mouth. A strong jawline, eyes to die forâthis is exactly why Steve didn't do that in public without the defense of a sketchbook. It simply wasn't polite to get lost in other people's features while they were waiting for a response. ââDarting his gaze away, Steve's eyes lighted on the clock mounted on the wall behind the counter. Cursing inwardly, he shook his head and gave Bucky an apologetic smile. "I'd love to stay, but I'm already running behind when I should've left here. As much as I need it, I'll never make my meeting if I say for coffee now. Iâshit. I'm sorry." His face lit up briefly, hope flashing across it. "I'll come back at my lunch break. Will you still be here at eleven thirty?"

He wasnât sure how long they sat there. When Steve had moved to lean against the wall, Bucky had tensed up but when no harm fell upon him, he settled once more and kept staring. Even when Steve closed his eyes, Bucky just kept staring at him, waiting for something to happen but nothing did. There was no movement, no one came in and shot him with anything, no one tried to pin him down; nothing. Just Steve.Â
The scent was the one thing that was keeping his calm. It felt⌠like he knew it, even if he couldnât place where heâd smelt it before or why it made him feel like he would be safe no matter what. Hours they just sat there, Bucky detailing everything about the soldier before finally, after a lot of internal confusion and debate, he made a move.Â
It was slow, untucking himself from the corner and moving. Each movement was calculated and almost didnât feel like his own doing. But never had  he felt a stronger need to be close to something than he did right now. He was too tired, much too tired to fight what his body was telling him and he just went with it, sliding over until he was inches away.
ââHe didn't drift off, but the quiet let him fall into a trance-like state where he could sift through all the memories he had of himself and Bucky to share when the time was right. He decided on small happy things, like going to the pictures together, the birthday Bucky surprised him with art pencils and the Christmas after where he got a sketchbook. The time they went to the Dodgers game together. Getting drunk on the roof of their building and ending up curled together in a sleepy pile, noses pressed to each other's necks. ââAll this he could offer up, their life together bit by bit for Bucky to pick through and hold up to himself to see where it fit. ââHe only noticed Bucky moving because the room was dead silent, but he chose not to react until it stopped. Slowly turning his head towards Bucky, he blinked open his warm blue eyes and offered a soft smile. ââ"Hey, pal," he murmured, hope dancing in his eyes.

[ a sigh catches in buckyâs throat, just snagged before  it  can  flee.  even  after  most  of  their childhood  had  been  spent  scuffling in  dusty alleyways,  picking fights that ruth charged into pigtails first, bucky couldnât tame the frustration at that recklessness.Â
this isnât a back alley, ruth; itâs war. ]
âPair up with Morita. Create chaos;                    disorder in their plans. Anything to give us time.â
[ her eyes burn low with determination, a vow to be useful this time, to bring back the fond smile that used to so often be thrown her way. she won't repent, can't be sorry for helping the mission, but she's slowly starting to feel like bucky's annoying little sister, always tripping after him trying to get his attention. ââââhe has a way of looking at her when ââââshe's done something reckless that ââââcuts through her like it never used to. ââââit finds all the cracks in her artificial ââââarmor and makes her feel smaller ââââthan she ever did back in brooklyn. she can't catch his eye, but she sure as hell can be a good soldier. ]
ââ"Yes, sir. ââââWe'll wait on your command to move out."
