"Wait I thought that it was you who decided if a piece of land was decided to become a land of heritage, not the city...?" Esme questioned. 'Did he do this.. For me...?' she wondered.
Keith thought for a moment. She could be really sharp, sometimes. āSometimes,ā he said, adjusting his tie. āIn this case, it was decided that this particular park was an important part of the city and that it required restoration and commemoration. Itās the only one large enough to hold our festivals so itās an important piece of Libertyās history.ā They were strolling along, hand in hand. He had brought her to a fountain in the middle of the park and smiled, sitting on the edge. It was his favourite part of the restoration and he wondered what she would think of it.

Keith felt conflicted. More than anything he wanted to know, but at the same time, he didnāt want her to be reliving any pain. Esme asked him outright if he wanted to know and he very nearly lost his nerve, turning away and looking at the floor anxiously. When he turned back his eyes were wide and glassy, his brow furrowed. With a sigh, the Prince came and sat beside her, not really taking much notice of his state of undress.

Still blushing furiously, she rested her head on his bare shoulder. āWell, the woman that adopted me and my sister had two daughters already, and they hated us. Especially me. Whenever Iād sing or play something, theyād always tell me how I should just give up on my dreams. When I became a teenager, I started to take better care of my appearance, but they always said how I was ugly and how no one would ever love me.. I didnāt tell anyone what happened. Th-thenā¦ā Esme took a deep breath and moved her shirt down to show her upper arm. āI started cutting. I knew if I had cut my wrists theyād be easily seen, so I cut on my upper arms, thighs, and hips. I even cut my sides a few times.ā By this time, and she didnāt realize it, tears were streaming down. āJonathan had been my friend for years, and I knew he had a major crush on me. I felt lonely and wanted to be loved so my brain forced itself to think that there was something between us. I donāt consider a single one of his kisses real, there was nothing there. No chemistry. Unlike with you, thereās passion and love and warmth⦠Anyway, a month or so after we started dating, he started to become violent⦠Heād hit, kick, slap, claw, he came at me with a knife one time a-and⦠I didnāt say anything before because I was afraid for some reason⦠And I donāt know why. I trust you with my life but I was so ashamed of my actions back then that I-I just couldnātā¦ā She finally broke down and pulled her knees up and hid her face. The scars that she had from her cuts were big and the possibly couldāve been really deep. She didnāt know why she beat herself up like this. Sometimes when she gets so upset sheāll clench down on her arms so she doesnāt think about it. āWhy am I so weakā¦?ā Esme said, her voice sounded like it was dying and had sadness all through it.

He listened. He didn't dare to interrupt, because he was afraid he might say the wrong thing. Every portion of her story contained hurt and pain unlike anything he could possibly know. The frustration was severe but the aching in his chest built as she told him more and more. And then... the scars. He couldn't believe that she would do such a thing to herself. He couldn't believe that she had ever been treated so badly. Keith's eyes remained wide and full of question and incredulity. He turned his head to the side and looked down at her arm when it was bared to him. He drew a sharp breath and began to reach out but stopped himself, resolving to continue listening. When she spoke of her trust in him and their passion his heart clenched hard in his chest. It was so hard to imagine her so sad, so devoid of hope or love as she had always been so loving towards him. Sure, they had their moments. All couples did. He would always be arrogant and pigheaded to some extent but most of the time, he was only protesting so loudly because he didn't actually know how strongly he felt about it. She had taught him that about himself. How strong he could be without shouting, the difference he coud actively make with his country. All because of her influence. He was blessed to know her. How could she think so little of herself? "Weak?" he replied, lifting her head to look her in the eyes. "Are you kidding me? You've lived through *all* of that and think yourself weak?" He shook his head and smiled at her, placing himself on his knees in front of her. "It's more the opposite." He took Esme's hands in his and spoke carefully. "You... are so strong. *So* strong. You've made me strong, too. You don't need to be, any more. I want to protect you." His grip tightened as the emotions locked in his body came forth. "Let me be strong *for* you." One of his hands loosened and moved towards the hem of her nightgown. "Show me..." redninjakitty14rp
