Becoming strong is my goal. I want to be strong!! Mentally, physically, financially, reliably. I want people to look at me and be like she's strong. I want my brain to be energised. I want to take life and make it mine.
Finding a form or no form at all
It's time to return to writing again as a way to process my thoughts. I think writing functions for me as self-interrogation. I've kind of ummed and ahhed over what kind of writing I want to produce. Sometimes I think poetry is the higher form to strive for. I went through a phase of thinking that writing about the self is no longer needed, the personal essay is everywhere and puts myself at the centre of the universe, inflates the ego, tries to dissect the self until it is entirely separate from the world, takes us further from being a collective etc. I thought that writing fiction or poetry would be the only way to meaningfully write anymore. So I wrote a short story and it was ok. It was about a girl going home for her mother's wedding in rural NZ and the local men that flirt with her. It really wasn't anything ground-breaking, and certainly didn't do anything to help form a collective. So then I realised that writing for me has never been about purity of form. It's a way for me to process my thoughts. A way for me to put my learning to the test. A way to develop as a person. I have so many thoughts throughout the day, both low and high-brow, that get lost if I don't write them down. And this immediate writing helps me develop to become a fully-fledged person who is interested and curious about the world. If I take away the personal essay (however informal it may appear in form) then there isn't really a person left over. If I take away the personal essay I lose both my interests and interest in writing itself.
So basically I'm now just like I will write about anything ok!!!
Back in Melbourne again and nothing has changed. I have, of course, for the better but at the expense of enjoying this city. This is based on first impressions (or as it's my second time living here does this become my second impressions or a second go at first??) as it's only been a few weeks, but now after years of travel and work and exposure to alternative ways of living I look around this city as if it exists outside of reality. Conor and I literally moved here for the better work/life balance - after acknowledging that we do in fact have to work for the rest of our lives as neither of us have the financial backing of family, we decide on a city that will not grind us to a pulp like London or one being drained of external pleasures like Wellington. And so, walking around, it's jarring to see people rich enough to dine at wine bars and drink $15 pints and curate the perfect life. I just get the feeling that life is too perfect here, which is why we moved, but there's a certain level of indulgence being the standard and I can't help but want to distant myself from the exact reason I moved here for. I mean, if you can access a higher standard of living, you should go for it, right? But after living in a grimy warehouse in London and fucking toiling with eight other housemates for whatever scraps of disposable income you can gather I'm struggling to let myself off the leash. Looks like I've got this sucker for punishment vibe going. Anyway life is struggling for a large portion of the population and to put myself within a little bubble of those who are thriving in the fire just seems wrong.
Famous Bagels and Judith Butler to cure depression
Here's another one despite the ever present doom of what tf to do with my life. Another one because I quit my job and can't find a new one. Another one because my money is running out and I just really need a new email in my inbox so I can go out and buy a croissant. Another one because otherwise I will doom scroll until I need to pee.
Yesterday I went down a rabbit hole of looking into Judith Butler and now I need to loan Gender Trouble from the library because that is apparently my current obsession. The other four books I currently have on loan will not suffice, it must be this specific book on gender theory. Anything else I simply cannot give my attention to. I've tried - I started reading Hurricane Season and got absolutely fucked by the first four pages that now I need to wait until I'm feeling intelligent enough to reattempt. That book is not for the person who is stressing about their upcoming job interview. It will not crush that anxiety, the premise is too outrageous from the start. Then as I was waiting for the train I began to read Caleb Femi's poetry collection Poor and absolutely ripped through that to the point where nothing has remained in my brain. That was post-interview and I was too busy thinking about how I bombed in my nerves and how fucked the STAR method is. I am not hopeful but know that manifesting does work so should cheer tf up. The only thing that I believe can truly distract me from the growing depression (there, I admit it) I feel at the moment is Gender Trouble because I have always been good at creating new areas of interest not maintaining them. Things that I already like, put them in the trash. They are not enough for the coming storm, if previous experience is anything to go by.
I was waiting for the train to take me to Liverpool Street because I wanted to visit Brick Lane and treat myself after the interview. It ended up being nothing short of an unfocused, lonely outing where I couldn't afford anything and all the cafe's were too busy because it was 12pm and all the office and retail folk of E1 were eating. As if to remind me the only people who can afford to eat in this city are the employed, Matisse, the employed. I literally just interviewed for a job with a food rescue charity though so surely there's some connection there that gets me a seat at (one of) the table(s) (in your fine establishment)!!! Surely the attempt is enough. So I got a famous bagel and leaned against a closed shopfront and devoured it like a famished retail worker on their break (appearances matter in London). I browsed some stores but had no luck finding anything that fit, and so just found myself becoming really lonely. I haven't been proper lonely in a while, have had the pleasure of having a boyfriend for the past 7 years and we spend so much time together. I used to grow annoyed at not having as much alone time, thought I was the kind of recluse introvert destined for the cabins and mountains and isolated coastlines. But turns out I'm an extrovert too and need interaction with people to have a life worth living. And need even more so when I'm sad. This, while also having the complete delusion at the start of the day that maybe I'll just spend the whole day inside because that's what I feel like doing. No girl, you're wilfully deluded get up. So yeah, I'm proper getting sad and need a job so I can fill the hole with external pleasures. I've had enough of myself, the only thing I wanna do with myself now is read Gender Trouble and be better company when I am blessed enough to be in the presence of others.

Yikes!
I just read Alien Daughters Walk into the Sun by Jackie Wang and it made me so happy to see posts from Tumblr put into a book. Like it's something that I've always thought worthy of doing, but to actually see it done and popped up in the windows of my local bookshops is another thing. I think the immediacy of writing for Tumblr is something that we're told as writers to avoid. That is, you should instead take time to dwell and edit and construct a text. And yes, I know that largely this is how good novels and collections are made, but sometimes I think my best work comes from just dumping my thoughts all out onto a page. Because that's what I think. That's who I am. For me, that exactly summarises how I think. I'm tryna write some kind of novella/story atm and I am struggling. So maybe that's why I'm now like y'know what FUCK intention what comes out is what comes out. There has always been this thought that exists inside of me that is like I'll never be able to construct a piece of writing that I've planned. I'll never be able to plan what I write. I'll never be able to properly finish a piece of writing because before halfway I'll be like this is hot rubbish. Or I'll literally just start thinking I'm not gonna finish this and I won't. That is the practise though, pushing through despite every outward and inward signal telling you to stop and do something else. Which is also why I'm here, writing this down in the first place because I'm avoiding what I'm actually meant to working on. Yikes!
Plummeting down the text box though is a different feeling in entirety. This sudden, immediate writing fuels me, makes me feel unstoppable that I can just spill myself out here without knowing what the result will be. Looking back at the end of the paragraph being like these are the things that are actually on my mind. Sometimes Conor can pick up on a mood and ask what's up and I literally don't know how to say it because I don't know what it is. Sometimes my thoughts just float around my head and I try and try to grasp onto them, to turn them into something tangible that I can work with or ask others to help with, but I can never. They leave and I'm left with a head full of nothing, embarrassed that I'm so low without a way to communicate this without sounding like I'm turning into my Mother. Because that's where I've seen this vacant behaviour before, in my Mother as I'm talking to her in the passenger seat while she drives me to school, and she's nodding at the correct times but she's miles and miles away. She'll eventually admit she's thinking about something else. But more importantly there's incidents where she's in the middle of talking and will lose it, will lose the thought and it's impossible to get back. There's a few seconds of an attempt to remember, an embarrassed shake of the head, then finally an immediate task to distract herself from the idea that she's lost that thought. She'll usually go back to folding washing or reading a cookbook or leave the room entirely. It happens to me too, and it happens to my Mother, and it happened to her Mother. My Nana so bright and full of love but without her thoughts. I don't remember much of her when she was my Mother's age, but towards the end of her life she was without them entirely. What do dementia patients think about when they're alone? Do they reflect on their own lives or somebody else's? Do their thoughts become more external than internal? I worry my Mother is headed for this, and I worry that I am too.
So these posts are important because they are how I think. They document my thoughts, and I look back each time a couple of years later and go oh, I guess I did feel that way, because sometimes I genuinely do not remember. And without this form of writing, I would not remember. I'll have moved through it all without knowing how, without knowing where it is I have moved from, without remembering how to connect the dots.
If there ever was a way to say it it would go like this: I don’t know what to do with my life. At one point I asked myself if people ever leave everything behind because they don’t want to deal with their problems. Isn’t that what I did though? I’m standing at the counter, scanning brands of yoghurt I’ve never seen before because I didn’t grow up here. Yoghurt brands are the kind of thing you are only familiar with in your country of origin. Someone asks me whether or not this brand of sheep milk yoghurt is any good - I haven’t a clue. I moved here three weeks ago and these unfamiliar brands are being passed through my hands and suddenly I found myself in another country and nothing looks familiar here. I’m disassociating while holding the guy who owns the neighbourhood wine shop’s yoghurt being like how the actual fuck did I get here. I look at him doing the most natural thing in the world and I’m on the verge of tears because I’ve got no way to tell what yoghurt I should buy in this country. But he’s just doing his groceries, and I’ll get to know him in time, he’ll become a regular of mine and be a marker of consistency that is hard to come by in this city. I guess I did run away though. I only know this in hindsight, as I’m writing this, rather than in the moment. Didn’t have that idea active as I was booking the flights. Nor in the small aisles of the shop as I was sorting through bruised fruit. When I landed I handed out my CV in a fever-state, fueled by the depleting state of my bank account to just make something happen. I turned down a cafe job after they offered me the same amount of money that I was paid in New Zealand. They told me it was the best trial they’ve ever had. I thought about the way I wrote down the orders on all those coffee cups and agreed that it was my finest work.
My face glows green from the new sweatshirt I bought. I didn’t realise it was going to be this bright - have the deceptive shades of online stores to thank for the green light shining on the underside of my chin. I spent the summer working in an organic food store where Julia Jacklin would play each day. I felt bad for the day I thumbsed down Pressure to Party in an impulsive attempt to diversify the playlist. So I bought her sweatshirt to return the positivity to my relationship with Julia. To thank her for making my face glow despite my best efforts to remain moody and shallow.
I've gotta read more about the history of portraiture if I'm gonna name this project after it. I've gotta hold a mirror up to myself if I'm gonna turn inward. I've gotta write what is actually there rather than what I think is there. Or maybe that's where any content worthy of documenting is drawn from...found the crux to this piece in the space between me and what everybody else sees.
