I usually keep these things short, but thought this was worth sharing. Especially with our current state of affairs. We've been doing adaptive clinics for the VA hospital and I had the pleasure of meeting this man. I've been asked to not use his name, but he couldn't lift his left hand over his head to start pulling himself up on the rig we set up. It was obvious on the ground he wasn't going to make it all the way up. I didn't really think about it, but I wasn't going to let quitting be an option for him, so I ran to the back and grabbed some extra equipment so I could rig a line, redirect, and haul myself alongside him and help him pull himself up. We chatted about everything he's been through and even about barbecue. As exhausting as it was, and with all the medication he was on, he had an amazing spirit about it the whole time. Lately I've been rather introspective about how I act and react to certain situations. We're all broken people, and we have our own worlds to deal with, but sometimes we need to drop what we're doing and help someone out. And sometimes we need to step up and do A LOT of work to help someone out. But most importantly we need to not think about it. Just do it. It should be a reaction. It's a process, and it takes practice. A lot of practice. Keep trying. Keep helping. We'll be okay. (at Stanford Univ. Rock Climbing Wall)
