In light of the latest release of the live-action Moana remake (which has since been out for a week-), I rewatched the real and true peak that is the original animated film last Thursday, and this led me to draw Tamatoa for the first time in years (...and even have my crush on him being reignited uwu) - overall, I hope you enjoy!! Please be kind to each other and have an amazing weekend~ β‘β‘β‘

An attempt at drawing this guy again after almost ten years, because the only good thing the remake is doing for me is making me want to revisit Moana stuff again.

Fanfic! Mostly about a giant monster crab, but also have an old OUAT story in there, too.

Life's been busy with work and horses and other projects, so it's been a while since I've posted any fresh ones, but I still do work on new stories and will eventually post some of them. I mostly still just write about Tamatoa, but I have a couple ideas for a few oddball one-off stories for FNV and Andor that have been started, but may not ever actually get beyond the conceptual/beginning phase.
I've also given some public talks on Hawaiian bird conservation and wildlife photography, though those aren't available online. (My wildlife photography is, though! At @jadewolf-photography )
Ahh! Iβm once again super late on Jemaine Clemonday but I just saw this on Instagram and found it interesting! This man, heβs funny and brilliant. π¦πΆβοΈ

Things that happen in the 2026 version of 'Shiny.' (For those who choose not to see the Moana remake).
(I didn't watch the remake. Someone uploaded the clip on youtube and it was taken down, but I remembered a few things.)
-Tamatoa apparently has crab (lobster?) henchmen now who live in the cave with him. Not sure if they are there willingly or not. They are in charge of the lighting effects and serve as the chorus.
-Tamatoa copies the voice of Grandma Tala as a further attempt to mock Moana.
-Maui's attempt to get the hook during the first half is shown more.
-Moana is shown to be screaming and freaking out more.
-Despite what he sings, the fish don't come to Tamatoa. He hits a clam and some stuff flies out for him to eat (huh?)
-Tamatoa screams this time when he first sees Maui.
-Maui screws up a very specific transformation that seems to foreshadow the sharkhead transformation. Tamatoa's joke at this is actually as funny as it is cringe-inducing. (It was something like "I didn't order Cala-Maui.")
-Tamatoa traps Moana in a giant skull this time.
-Tamatoa's beat down of Maui isn't as shot for shot, but it is timed to the music a few times, like in the original.
-Maui has the Heart of Te Fiti at this point (to keep Tamatoa from getting it from Moana?) But he loses it during the fight.
-Moana still sees the impirtant back tattoo, but I dont' think Tamatoa reveals it on purpose like in the original.
-Tamatoa ACTUALLY GETS TO USE THE HEART OF TE FITI! Holy crap, I admit that change was pretty interesting.
-In fact, the heart is how Tamatoa turns bioluminescent, but unfortunately he's not in this iconic form for very long. (So sadly, I don't think we have a live action version of a certain youtuber's icon image).
EDIT: Actually no, Tamatoa just threw Maui to the ground hard enough for it to crack and reveal the green bioluminscent algae. That makes way more sense.
-The crab henchmen let out fireworks for the final chorus. This is probably why the bioluminescent doesn't last long.
-Moana is seen picking the heart back up. She probably isn't going to do the switcheroo since we dont' see any similar glowing algae in the cavern.
-Maui is last seen spinning toward the open mouth of Tamatoa. Not sure how else this moment will change because the video was cut off.
Is the "realistic" design a little unnerving? Yes. Could the bioluminescence have been a little more showy like in the original? Also yes. But I stand by the opinion that Tamatoa was the only best part of the live action Moana. Not to mention the background visuals of his undersea cave. Gorgeous. Though honestly the entire scene could have been slowed down, it felt pretty rushed the entire interaction.
