Serena and Lawrence: white, wealthy, and they both played a very significant role in the creation of Gilead.

Serena: benefits from pretty privilege

Lawrence: benefits from likability

Nick: blue-collar, low class, poorly educated, disfunctional family, mixed-race (although the show likes to pretend he’s white because they didn’t know how to handle race)

Regardless of whether Bradley pushed for Lawrence’s redemption or not, it’s baffling that people don’t see the problem with the message this sends. ET, YC and EM can justify however they want the decision to throw Nick under the bus, but the truth is that it wasn’t an intelectual, well-considered decision. You can’t intellectualize a creative decision, saying that it’s based on elements that happened off-screen but that were nonetheless omnipresent since the beginning, while the other big redemptions in the show are based on completely shallow considerations. And still, the message it sends is just as dangerous. It doesn’t send a message of hope. It sends a message that everyone can play the role of judicial system and decide, based on factors like race, appearance and wealth, wether someone is worthy of a second chance or not.

It’s baffling to me how everyone on this show always got to be a morally grey character BUT Nick for some reason. it feels like the writers never once extended some of the grace they’re so graciously offering everyone else despite everyone else’s actions being comparatively worse.
