Personally, I kind of hate that most of the negative responses mainly come from people who are essentially writing social justice blogs and trying to apply this to Game of Thrones. I dont really understand how anyone can apply social justice on a show like this or a book series like this where classism and racism seem pretty prevalent and there isnt any sense of any of this being corrected in the long run.

You might have a point if you were talking about something written in the Bronze Age or the actual Middle Ages. “A Song of Ice and Fire”, however, is a work written in the 20th and 21st centuries for 20th and 21st  century readers. 

If you compare “A Song of Ice and Fire” to, say, “The Iliad” or actual medieval romances, you’ll see how incredibly modern it is. For example, compare the story of Petyr and Catelyn in “A Song of Ice and  Fire” to the story of Sir Pelleas and Lady Ettard in “La Morte d’Arthur.” The similarities between the two are considerable, but “La Morte d’Arthur” takes the man’s side and portrays the woman as a cold and haughty and  carries the underlying message that Sir Pelleas deserved Lady Ettard, her feelings in the matter be damned. But “A Song of Ice and Fire” tells a very similar story from the woman’s point-of-view and despite what  dudebros say, I came away with the feeling that the underlying message was that Catelyn was under no obligation to love Petyr in return and that Petyr’s love is destructive and shallow. 

You can say much the same for Robert’s treatment of Cersei. “A Feast for Crows” was published in 2005 in a country where marital rape is a crime. Spin it however you like, but I believe we were supposed to infer from Cersei’s chapters that Robert beat and raped her.

What makes this odder, is that a lot of people tend to turn a blind eye on the Dothraki in which they are described as pedophiles and rapists and there isnt much that says otherwise.  No one tries to describe the Ghisarci not white either which is slightly interesting.

But here is something more interesting when I went to a Comic Con. Everyone that is a main character in game of thrones, including Tyrion, would completely  make fun of anyone that is involved in the nerd/science fiction/fantasy fandom. Funny compared to how devout a fandom that asoiaf is. 

Yes, Game of Thrones is written with somewhat of a modern appeal but not what you thought I meant. There isnt an omniscient voice that says women should be put in their place. We get a perspective from women from their thoughts; there isnt any voice of authority to decide on their actions.  We make our own conclusions on their actions and feelings. 

When Victarion kills a man for only laughing at him, there isnt a voice saying, "bad Victarion".  You infer and make that decision on your own.

If we are going to say this story has a modern perspective, then I do not assume that Cersei woud not have been forced to walk naked through the streets.

She’s taking it on her self to take over a whole city state, run it, and at the same time try to completely change the culture of the city. Lets just state how well Dany predicted how things were totally, totally going to get better for everyone after sacking 3 cities and then trying to rule one of them.

Guyz, by liking Dragons you are supporting slavery and uncompromising power. You are supporting nuclear weapons in a medieval world.

 I like to think about her dragons whom were all breed for war and to enslave people and then said people will then  die in a fiery volcano filled with “liquid hot magma.”  And everyone who is a freemen and even a lot of slaves in the free cities(ex braavos) are seen as Westerosi looking or Valyrian in appearance-possibly result of big scary overpowered Sorcerers dragonlords with silver hair and purple eyes going on rampage for thoasandz of yearz….(why couldn’t twilight vamps be like this?) Guyz, its world building…. we have to take that in considerizationzzz…. IN all for casting equality, guyz, I honestly believe they should cast more sweet elven women. They never get any roles because of shows like Keeping up with the Kardashians and Real housewives. Even in fantasy shows they are undercasted. Its just totally not socially acceptable at all.. YOu here me.

1) Re: casting. Culturally, the Free Cities seem heavily inspired by Greece, Asia Minor, and Italy with Qohor being something of a hybrid between Hungary, Romania, and Russia. Most of the Lysene are blond, most of the Myrish are dark, the elite Volantenes are probably white-haired and purple-eyed, and everyone else seeems to a mixture. So I don’t really have a problem with characters from the Free Cities being played by White actors. On the other hand, I think Lindaaa’s tantrum about the casting of Salladhor Saan was much ado about nothing: Saan is a mercenary and a pirate, so he’s probably not going to be an elite member of Lysene society anyway. As for Talisa Maegyr, well, I’m not a fan. That has nothing to do with the casting, though, and everything to do with the writing. It’s a shame that Oona Chaplin was wasted in such a thankless role. 

2) Linda is a Big Name Fan. The fact that she responds to any and all criticism by calling her detractors “cunts” and “whores” makes her look childish and thin-skinned. If she’s so above lowly tumblr trolls, then why does she write umpteen blog posts about how much she doesn’t care about our opinions?

So I’m new to tumblr and if you’re reading this you have the privilege to witness my first post.

I’m a massive fan of A Song of Ice and Fire. Huge. Not a week goes by where I don’t read the books, peruse the websites, or listen to the audiobooks. I enjoy the TV show, but not nearly as much. Anyway, I’ll get to the point…

Listening to the most recent episode of A Podcast of Ice and Fire, featuring Elio and Linda from westeros.org, I was made aware of the current shitstorm that has surfaced around Linda and people’s attitude towards her, notably on tumblr. Having nothing but time on my hands at the moment I decided to read up on this “conflict” and piece together the reasons for this sudden hatred towards her, with accusations of sexism, bullying and even racism being thrown around. There’s even a petition to try and make GRRM cut all ties with her. After spending a few hours reading through her posts on hippoiathanatoi, the various negative comments people have made, and then her reactions on tumblr I quickly came to my own conclusion…

A lot of you are fucking sad, pathetic assholes.

Firstly let’s put to bed these accusations of racism and sexism. Are you fucking serious? Calling somebody a cunt does not make you sexist, especially if the person saying it is a woman. Is that ignorant? No, it’s logical. I’m from the UK so maybe my attitude towards the word is different, but here it’s no big deal, at least where I live. It’s only a word, and if you can be so easily offended by it then what are you doing reading A Song of Ice and Fire where it’s used frequently…by a man. Is calling someone a dick as offensive as calling someone a cunt? Apparantly not, when in reality it should be. But that’s just my point.

The racism thing is even more laughable. A lot of people are really trying hard to find something they can use against her, the best I could find was her being upset with the ethnicities of the people cast in Qarth for the TV show. I didn’t find a single “nigger” or “spic” or “cracker” at all. See I’m using racist language but I’m not being racist, weird huh?

Her coming down on fac-fic is entirely in her right. Lets be honest, most of it is complete horseshit and the people who write it should be embarrassed. Even if there’s a disclaimer saying there’s no affiliation with GRRM it’s still a representation of his work, and the standard is sorely lacking in pretty much all of it.

As for her harassing people on tumblr, well maybe some of you should just ignore her posts and stop commenting. If you write horrible shit accusing her of being racist and sexist don’t be suprised if she sees red and attacks you. A lot of you appear to be doing your best to piss her off. There was somebody who thought it would be funny to rag on her mush prose. Right, that’s just mean and unnecessary. Role play is different to fan-fic and if you don’t understand that well…I just don’t know.

A lot of this obviously stems from jealousy. They’re jealous of Linda and her involvement with GRRM. They’re jealous she gets to read samples first. They’re jealous she knows him. They’re jealous she was thanked in ADWD. They think “all she did was create a website with all the stuff in Westeros written down. I could have done that.” But you didn’t, SHE did. You’re jealous. Well guess what? So am I. That doesn’t mean I spit venom and find every available opportunity to shit all over her posts and her as a person. Get over it. If you don’t like her then don’t read her blog. It’s not hard.

You might think it’s weird I’m defending someone I have zero connection with but I get really pissed off when people go on fucking witch hunts and start bending the truth and warping reality to try and fit the world they want. If you have actual proof of Linda Antonsson being a racist or being a bully, i.e using racist language towards someone of ethnicity or harassing someone who has not provoked her, I’d love to see it. I’m doubtful it exists.
