this! very, very valid. no workplace is truly a safe space, no matter how much they tell you it is (i’m talking about corporations, i don’t know how it is in non-corporate or non-business settings). and that is the truth.
“they don’t need to know”… the scary thing is nowadays employers already know or have the power to know anything that you do not tell them. they want to remove the lines between personal and professional, ugh
so true! in my corporate days I only showed the parts of myself that were good for the job, and because those were a pretty good match, managers believed my (revealed) hobbies and side gigs only benefited the business
in some ways it's worse in academia, where your passions and hobbies and work all sort of intermingle, so there's no hiding that stuff. plus you actually need to care about how the workplace is doing, but most of your colleagues put their interests over the needs of the customers students, without whom they wouldn't have a job. so because you care, it's constant unhappiness and dissatisfaction
privacy matters, especially at work
Speaking as a manager: while I do like knowing a little bit about the special interests and hobbies of my team and coworkers, I DO NOT ASK FOR THIS INFORMATION. Everyone deserves to be private about their lives, especially at work.
(Also, this is a lost cause for me, because my online life is very easy to uncover.)
