Dad: Havent heard from u in 2 wks, dont know what u r doing, so FYI your cell phone service ends 6/18, u need to make arrangements to continue it or it gets shut off
Me: I miss you. I've been distracting myself with whatever I can to try not to feel useless. Allison isn't even here anymore. I don't know what to do and I'm terrified you won't take me back. I've been staring at my phone the last few days, trying to think of what to say. So, that's what I'm doing.
Dad: You've hurt a lot of people who have done nothing but support you, I've asked you to come back and you said you wouldn't because you're 18 now. You can always come back, but life as you knew it is forever changed and if you decide to come back there are a whole new set of rules that will be followed daily and you won't be sitting around doing nothing, you have to grow up fast and get your life back on track, change your attitude and start mending fences and taking responsibility for yourself
Me: Dad, I don't want a "you can always come back". I want to know whether you want me back. I feel like shit, and I don't want to go somewhere that'll make me feel worse because I'm unwanted. I understand that everything's going to change, and I hope it's a way that's good for everyone. I have no problem with a new set of reasonable rules, as long as you stop calling us bad stuff when you're mad. I understand you're angry, but I don't think that makes it ok. It hurts more than you mean it to. I know i won't be doing nothing - I want to get a job, bank account, and license. I hate being helpless like this.
Dad: Your reply sounds like your not taking any accountability, you're making some bad wrong assumptions, over dramatizing and creating problems that don't exist, a very immature attitude towards the situation and life in general.
Me: Which problems don't exist? I'm not shirking responsibility, but it kind of sounded like you were putting all of it on me. Can't we just compromise?
Dad: For you to say that you are unwanted is a huge problem because I'm the only one who has willingly taken care of you your whole life and pushed you to get prepared to better handle your future, have a great life and avoid the pitfalls that trap others
Me: Yeah, it IS a problem that I feel that way. So what am I making up? I don't understand.
Dad: Just because you feel unwanted doesn't mean your are unwanted especially since no one is telling you that. You are confusing frustration over your lack of contributions and motivation as being unwanted rather than understanding the frustration is driven by your actions or lack of them. You need to start with believing that your patent knows more about life than you do and then start believing and following the direction and advise you ate given.
