Cons .:

very slow drying time. this can still be a con because if you’re going to paint with oil paints be sure to have a specific place for it to reduce any disturbances during drying times or excess dust sticking to your painting.

also; if you value time when it comes to commissioned pieces, keep the drying time in mind. not just for the end of the piece but during. layering oil paints takes time and patience to perfect. if you plan to use them like any other paint, you will need several hours or days of time to wait for certain layers to dry within your art piece as they blend very easily and can destroy the overall look of a color.

another thing to consider is the smell. certain oil paints have been described to have heavy oil and/or chemical odors. which if sensitive to smells, may induce headaches.

when using brushes or any other tool, be sure to have a cleaning agent on hand. allowing the oil paints to dry; even a little, in your brushes, can seriously damage them and cannot be washed out with water alone.

the price . due to the many additives, one may need in order to successfully do an oil painting, you will need extra ‘ingredients’ such as brush cleaners and paint thinners and sealers and solvents. oil paint being more a expensive paint to begin with, it may be a cause for concern in beginners or those on a budget. 

another thing to consider is fat content in paints. what is known as ‘Fat Over Lean’ ,

" In order to make sure the paint adheres properly in layers, and will dry at appropriate times (and your painting doesn’t become cracked or damaged), it is very important to paint Fat over Lean. It does not refer to thickness of paint, but instead to amount of oil: paint with more oil content (Fat) over paint with less oil content (Lean).

Fat over Lean refers to the oil painting principle that applying paint with a higher ratio of oil to color pigments OVER paint with a lower ratio of oil to color pigments can ensure a more flexible paint film that will not crack later on down the road when the paint dries and ages. Since the drying time of various oil paints varies, making sure that your upper layers of paint dry slower than the lower layers is vital to the longevity of your painting." Source

and of course, when everything’s said and done, overtime if the Art wasn’t done in the most correct manner, you may risk cracks in your paintings. {which can be good or bad.}

NOTE .: this information is not to deter you from using oil paints. it’s a very beautiful medium that can be mastered with research, time and patience. if you notice, many oil painters start off with splotches of paint layers before blending and use various other techniques unique to them that makes the experience the best for them. take heed to this. as well as with any other method of arting.

Texture .:

very smooth and rich in pigments.

some are thick and may require oil solvents to dilute which may or may not increase or decrease drying times. 

Effects .:

most oil paints dry with a decent glossy sheen. however depending on how much they’re diluted, they can be more matte.

Pigment Strength. Color and when dried .:

the colors in oil paintings are almost always absolutely stunning, even through time. both wet and dried. they have a tendency to have this alluring sheen to them that captivates you and ultimately dry hard. 

Price .:

the price for oil paints vary . the lowest price; for beginners especially, is around 5-ish dollars. great price to at-least experiment. unknown; the quality, however.

Waterproof .:

oil paints are typically resistant to water …I mean, it is oil. however, for good measure, use a good sealant and try not to submerge your paintings in water.

Best Surfaces .:

canvas . easily ‘stickable’. nuff said. 

Best application method .:

palette knives, fingers, and brushes with quick cleaning sessions.

Blendability .:

when blending oil paint, you want to make sure the paint mesh well together {lean over fat} and wait between drying times if not meshing well. other than that, they blend beautifully.

Cons .: 

There is one con, it is surface sensitive. You can use it on almost any surface with decent opaque-ness. However, because it is a sort of plastic; non-porous surfaces will make the paint easily peel able. {think satisfying videos of people peeling paint off their paint trays.} just something to think about.

Besides messiness, everything that is does can be used for great art.

Just to add some details before you consider buying…here’s some important factors to consider

Texture .:

Typically smooth. Easily spread . Some paints; depending on brand; are thicker than others. The ones in regular squeeze bottles have a tendency to be less thicker than the paints in tottle bottles {the ones that are usually hanging}.

Effects .:

You can find a range of effects with acrylic paint, but for the most part it dries hard but pliable {if you like thick coats}.

Some drying effect names to look out for : Gloss . Super Gloss . Satin Finish {think, wicker chairs} . Matte {dry} . Crackle {gives an old and distressed look} . Metallic . Shimmer or Glittery . Color shifting . Outdoor {water and weather resistant} . Chalky {chalkboard-like finish}, etc.

Pigment Strength {wet/dry}  .:

Consider that, some paints can become darker with drying and lose color over time .

Depending on the brand, the color strength may vary.

Price .:

The price range for acrylic paints vary brand to brand . A good estimate would be 50¢ - $50.00.

Best Surfaces .:

The best surfaces for acrylic paint is probably a regular canvas . But you can paint on cardboard, laminated furniture, glass, plastic, paper, etc. Depending on how thick the paint is, you may need multiple coats for different surfaces.

Best application method .:

The best way to use acrylic paint is with regular brushes. No need to get fancy . You can also use fingers, sponges, sticks, paper of whatever else you see fit.

A quick tip to make blending and spreading easier . Wet you brush.

Blendability .:

With a good brush, the blending power of acrylic paints is very good. May take a while, especially if you dislike brush strokes. Experiment with different dilutions, application thickness or coats and brushes for the best type of finish you want. In my own experience, allowing the paint to cover the brush very well gets rid of any leftover brush lines, also makes blending a lot easier.
