I see very few blogs out here teaching the basic principles of magic, so I wanted to provide a guide to what I’ve found are the important principles. (with gifs!) I divided things that I think will be helpful when creating or altering spells and things that are helpful when figuring out if a spell will succeed or why it failed.

SPELL CREATING PRINCIPLES

Law of Similarity

These first two principles are from James Frazer’s The Golden Bough and are fundamental to all of magic. Frazer describes this law as “like produces like.” This law says that manipulation of an image or likeness yields manipulation of the thing itself. Here’s some examples of the Law of Similarity in Graeco-Egyptian magic:

Stabbing a human figure with nails to cause pain to the person

Drawing the caster holding their love interest on a leash in a “love leash” spell

Writing a spell in a circle around someone’s name to encircle them and restrain them

Putting a love spell that aims to have the target “burn with love” into a lit oil lamp

Walking on a written spell to have the target “underfoot” and under your control

Similarity isn’t restricted by literal similarity, it extends to metaphorical similarity as well. Idioms and puns were widely used in Egyptian myth and magic

Law of Contagion

Frazer puts this one quite well: things which have once been in contact with each other continue to act on each other. I will extend this law to say that magical energy can be transferred or shared between objects by contact and that transferal is strongest if they are in contact or very close. Examples in Graeco-Egyptian magic include:

Using the hair of the target of a love spell in an oil lamp

Writing a spell to Seth on a donkey hide (an animal of Seth)

Burying a separation spell at the home of the couple to affect them

Hair is super useful (and sometimes required) for any spell targeted at someone. I know people who keep or trade hair as collateral.

MAGIC TIP: If you need to perform substitutions in a spell, use the Law of Similarity and Law of Contagion for selecting the substitution (ex: use red wine mixed with an animal’s hair instead of blood from that animal)

Law of Durability

This law basically is covered by the Law of Similarity, but, because it’s so important for picking items, I’m including it separately. Magic done with more durable items will yield a longer lasting effect. For example, a spoken spell will be weaker than a spell written on paper. A written spell will be weaker than a spell carved into stone. This law applies to enchanting as well: more durable items will stay enchanted for long.

Law of Layering

The law of layering must be applied carefully because it is about complementary layers, not throwing as many things at a wall as possible. 

The principle is the more layers that are used in magic, the stronger the magic will be. More layers build more power. Some ways to add layers are:

Have a pre-spell ritual, like bathing and meditating

Cast spells in a designated space for casting with items designated for magic

Make motions that mirror the words you’re saying

Add objects to a spell via the Law of Similarity, the Law of Contagion, or objects along your correspondence

Perform a spell in a group instead of solo

Reinforce a spell by doing it for multiple days in a row or once every week, month, etc.

Perform several different types of spells with the same aim, or perform multiple spells with complementary aims

These are examples to give you an idea of what I mean by “layers”. All of these actions work to build or reinforce the energy of a spell.

SPELL SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

Law of Likeliness

My mentor compares magic to stacking a deck: you’re manipulating chance to get circumstances in your favor. This means two things. The first is magic cannot make the impossible happen. Magic will not cause things to levitate, or conjure fire from nowhere, or anything else that is not possible in our universe. The second is if an outcome is less likely, stronger magic will be required to achieve it. Some decks are easier to stack. Take a money-drawing spell used on someone who makes commission versus a salary worker. The same spell will be far more effective for the salesperson, whose income is highly dependent on chance, than the salary worker.

Law of Agency

No magic short of possession can rob a human of their free will. For example, if you do a love spell on someone whose sexuality doesn’t align with yours, it will have no effect. If a person is resistant to a certain energy in their day-to-day life, they will similarly be resistant to that energy when sent via magic.

SPELL SAFETY PRINCIPLES

Law of Risky Immorality

I will preface this by saying there is no “white magic” or “black magic” as firm categories. Sorting spells into “white” or “black” would be like sorting cutlery into “good” and “evil.” All of the cutlery can be used morally and while yes, it’s far easier to injure someone with a knife, forks and spoons can be used to harm. Remember that magic is a tool and it’s how you use it that defines its morality.

The more counter-moral a spell is, the more likely the caster is to invite harm on themself. I say “counter-moral” here to mean “going against morals,” where these are the caster’s morals, the morals of their magical practice, and the morals of the spirits they work with. These spells are more likely to backfire or cause adverse affects down the road. Many attribute this to karma, but sometimes the cause is quite obvious. If you try to force a spirit or deity to do something against their morals, they won’t be happy with you. 

I am by no means anti-curse, but, from my own experience, I highly urge people who wish to cast them to aim for well-justified revenge or something with a moral backing and to use a lot of magical protection when casting.

When it comes down to spellcasting, I’ve seen a vast number of ways. There are as many types of witchcraft as there are witches, and there are twice as many ways to cast a spell as there are types of witchcraft. Which means a lot. 

So when I wanted to write it down into my Book, I knew I had to find some common ground. I am not going to write a book on it, I just want a note in my journal! That is how I came down to the very basics behind building spells, the very fundaments, the bare bones. The anatomy of a spell.

It does not only help those who write their own spells, but also those who use shared spells - you will be able to know exactly what to expect, what you can alter, and most importantly, how to alter it so it meets your needs.

Because a spell is made out of three things: the what, the how and the who.

What you need to figure out before even starting to think about a spell is what you need it for. Just a “prosperity spell” doesn’t mean too much, does it? Yes, you can make general spells, but the more general it is, the more fuzzy the effect will be.

The what is the intent, and it will determine the ingredients. That’s where correspondences come in, because correspondences are like spirit pictograms, metaphysical sign language. By pulling out cinnamon, basil and pennies, you’re telling the world “I’m going to be talking about prosperity, wealth and success here”. Be mindful that many ingredients have a certain feel next to their correspondence. Both black pepper and eggshells are corresponding with protection, but black pepper is also used in banishings and energy spells - it’s more of a “I’m punching you so go away” protection, while eggshells are more like saying “stay away”. Keep in mind what exactly  you want the world to hear when you communicate in witch-speak.

Then you need to know how you want it to happen. What is it that needs to be done, what kind of spell it’s gonna be. “Prosperity spell” usually means “dragging in prosperity”, but you could also drive prosperity away and the “what” of the spell would still be prosperity.

That’s where you choose how you’re going to speak about things, because just as a question mark at the end of a sentence and intonation can make or break communication (”You’re sure.” vs “You’re sure?”) , so can the way you deal with a spell. Here’s some witchy punctation I’ve gathered so far:

candles-> invoking, releasing (activating/setting free), banishing

jars-> containing/restraining, prolonging and keeping, attracting continuoesly (better for things that run out and you need to replenish them)

charms/enchantments-> invoking, conjuring, keeping (better as gifts, because portable)

sigils-> marking as/with, attracting, invoking

knots-> binding and uncrossing, attracting and keeping (better for things that are stable and don’t need ‘recharging’)

potions/oils-> (type of charm, really)  invoking, conjuring, keeping

Then there is the who, meaning the target. usually spells are either general in target (to whoever stumbles upon the spell), personal, or targeted - that’s where taglocks like poppets, photos or belongings. 

So, back to the example I made. After re-inspecting, it’s not a “prosperity spell” that I need, it’s a “spell to attract money to my home". You choose a jar spell, because you need to attract and keep attracting, because money runs out, and gather the proper ingredients: pennies, green aventurine and some cedar. The spell will be in your home, so no need for a taglock. But how do you put it together now?

Actions that make a spell out of all the parts are also important, because they’re the tonation of the witch speak, and they go hand-in-hand with the type of the spell.

To ADD what you speak of-> carve, bathe in, mix, rub, fill

To REMOVE-> cut, rip, burn, throw away, sweep

To KEEP-> bury, hide, seal, burn (activate), use as intended

So since I want to “ADD AND KEEP” money in my house, I can mix the ingredients, fill the jar with the ingredients, and then seal it and hide in a cabinet. Or I could anoint a candle with cedar oil (rub) and carve a prosperity sigil on it, then burn it to activate the intention, then bury the remains in my yard (keep). Or maybe I could make a potion out of the ingredients (mix), and then drink it (use as intended).

And it took forever. I compiled information from articles, books and tumblr and created a monster of 108 pages TYPED.

I’ll be physically making the Grimoire from thick paper and faux leather (basically making a large journal, but it’ll look rad!), as well as writing all the info in it by hand and decorating it with watercolors.

easy spells where only rose water is needed

🌹 a drop of rose water on each eyelid to enhance clarity

side note: these are just my personal correspondences

the basic correspondences:

dark chocolate:  protection, cursing, sex and fertility, power, healing

milk chocolate: love, friendship, comfort, (basically the rose quartz of food)

white chocolate: luck, joy, glamours

common chocolate flavours flavours:

orange: love, sex

coconut: healing, glamours

nuts: motivation, productivity

toffee/caramel: home, comfort

raisins/sultanas: creativity, fertility

snap a KitKat in half to break a bond between two people

share a Terry’s Orange with your partner to strengthen your love

eat a Snickers to Get Shit Done

As a chef-in-training I love to use flowers in my cooking so why not witchcraft too! Flowers add a splash of colour, taste, and a little bit of whimsy. People have been using flowers in cooking all the way back to the Romans and ancient Greeks. Many cultures today still use them too; Indians use roses and Italians use artichoke flowers. The tastes also vary! Some add spice and others a sweetness.

Eating Flowers Safely

Eat flowers you know are definitely edible - if you’re uncertain look in a reference book.

Eat flowers you have grown your self or are consumption grade. Nurseries and florists commonly use pesticides on the flowers.

Do not use flowers you have found at a park or near the edge of a road as they may be contaminated by car pollution and pesticides.

Only eat the petals and remove the pistols and stamens before eating.

To keep the flowers fresh place them on a wet paper towel and keep them in the fridge for up to 10 days.

If your flowers wilt put in some ice water.

Flowers and Their Properties

Allium - Depends on which variety but means the same as the herb- All the flowers in the allium family (leeks, chives, garlic, garlic chives) are edible. Flavours go from leek to garlic. All parts of these plants are edible.

Angelica - Inspiration/protection - The colours of the flowers range from lavender all the way to a deep rose and have a licorice flavour.

Bachelor’s button -  Love - Grassy flavour. Dont eat calyx as it is very bitter.

Basil - Success/banishing - Very similar in taste to the basil leaf but milder in taste.

Borage - Courage - flowers are a lovely blue colour and they taste like cucumber.

Calendula - Love/joy - They taste spicy and have a vibrant golden colour.

Carnations - depends on colour but usually healing - Petals taste sweet but the base is very bitter.

Chamomile -  Peace - They have a sweet flavour much like the tea.

Chervil - Joy - The flowers are very delicate and have a slight anise flavour.

Chicory - Success - Slightly bitter and good for pickling.

Chrysanthemum - Relaxation - Come in a variety of colours and flavours which range from peppery to pungent. Use fresh.

Citrus - Depends which type of citrus but generally joy - Some of the flowers in the citrus family are edible (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, kumquat). They have a sweet flavour and have a very strong taste.

Clove - Protection/Manifestation - They are sweet with a touch of licorice.

Dill - Protection -  The lovely yellow flowers taste like the leaves.

English daisy - Luck - They are very bitter.

Fennel - Confidence/Protection - Beautiful yellow flowers with a licorice taste much like the herb.

Fuchsia - Love - They have a lovely tangy taste.

Gladiolus -  Strength/Beauty - Quite bland actually.

Hibiscus - Beauty -  Tastes like the tea with an interesting tart cranberry flavour.

Hollyhock - Ambition - Bland but are very pretty.

Impatiens - Motherly love - Dont have much flavour but are nice for decoration.

Jasmine - Romance - Have a nice sweet taste so they’re nice in sweet dishes.

Lavender - Relaxation - They are sweet and spicy and are great for both sweet and savoury dishes.

Lemon verbena - Beauty - The small white flowers taste like lemon.

Lilac - Beauty - They have a strong citrus flavour.

Mint - Protection - They taste minty.

Nasturtium - Victory - Very popular in cusine. They have a sweet, floral flavour and are also spicy.

Oregano - Protection - Same taste as the leaves but more subtle.

Pansy - Joy - Bland.

Radish - Protection - Very peppery.

Rose - Love - Very floral in taste which gets stronger the darker the flower is.

Rosemary - Memory - Milder rosemary taste.

Sage - Clearing - Taste similar to leaves.

Sunflower - Happiness - Dont really have a taste.

Violets - Happiness/Love - Floral taste.

As I am a baby witch all the correspondences might be wrong so please tell me if you would change anything.

You can also create simple syrup and extracts with the flowers.

Try making tea, lemon verbena, lavender, and roses are great for tea
