Warnings: Ainât nothing but fluff, but Ellieâs here so thereâs an f-bomb in there. And a bit of making out. (No use of gendered pronouns; no Y/N; Joel calls Reader âhoneyâ. Reader is suggested to be slightly shorter than Joel, but itâs not definitive.)
Notes: Written in aboutâŚten minutes, just inspired by that photo up there. Itâs what Joel and Ellie deserve, not what they actually get. Completely un-betaed and honestlyâŚI didnât even reread it after writing it. This is about as stream-of-consciousness as something could be.

Youâve never seen Joel look simultaneously so relaxed and so terrified.
Heâs been your neighbor since he and Ellie moved to Jackson; the little yard shared between the backs of your houses a space where you slowly learned about the man and his girl that otherwise mostly kept to themselves. Conversations over garden work turned to nights over drinks; Ellieâs presence faded a bit as she made friends, leaving you and Joel alone under the stars more often than not.
Now, though, he sits across the room from you, eyes reflecting the little fairy lights strung overhead. His hair is longer than it had been when you met, despite his sister-in-lawâs best attempts to convince him to let her cut it; his clothes fit a bit better now that heâs eating more regularly.
His gaze is trained on his daughter â not his by birth, heâd informed you one late night, but his daughter nonetheless â as she laughs and dances with Dina in the middle of the floor. âI think sheâs in love,â heâd told you a few days earlier. âI hope sheâll tell me.â
âShe will,â youâd replied. âAt her own pace.â
You can empathize with Ellie.
Something drives you to stand up, to move across the room and drop a hand gently on Joelâs shoulder. âHey.â
âHiya,â he says, lifting his eyes from Ellie to you. Thereâs the ghost of a smile on his lips. (Ellie once told you youâre the only person sheâs ever seen him smile at besides herself and Tommy. You feel blessed.) âWas wondering when youâd come say hi.â
âYou could have done it,â you tease, your fingers playing at the collar of his jacket.
âNow whereâs the fun in that?â
You grin brightly. âCâmon, Mr. Miller. I want to dance.â
Joelâs dark eyes narrow. âI donât dance, honey.â
âIâll show you how,â you reply. Youâre not taking ânoâ for an answer. You slip your hand down his arm a little and tug him upright. âLetâs go show Ellie and Dina how itâs done.â
He hesitates, but slowly, he follows you as you lead him out, your fingers around the meat of his palm. Ellie meets you, then looks at Joel, her own softer brown eyes shining.
Theyâve been fighting more. You assume itâs the normal teenage thing; Ellie is sixteen now, making friends, falling in love, discovering herself â you remember what it was like with your own parents when you were her age.
But thereâs still love in both of their faces, regardless of disagreements. Itâs undeniable.
Joel nods, just slightly, to his daughter as Ellie does the same. Theyâre so alike, you think.
The music changes to something slower, easier, and Dina immediately wraps her arms around Ellie, who looks shocked for only a split second before easing right into it. Thereâs another glance at Joel, who finally offers a real smile, and theyâre off, spinning into the night.
You slip your hands up and lock your wrists behind Joelâs neck as his broad hands fall to your waist. He doesnât need any guidance, it turns out â heâs got an easy, natural rhythm and you keep in time with his movements without a thought.
âFeels weird being able to do this, doesnât it?â you say softly.
Joel looks into your eyes. âA little.â He glances towards Ellie and Dina before meeting your gaze again. âIâm glad she gets to have it, though.â
âWhat about you?â
He shrugs, his fingers pressing a little harder into your body.
âIâm glad you get to have it,â you offer instead. âI think maybe⌠You need this kind of normalcy.â
âDonât know if I deserve it, though.â
Joelâs always like this. Believes his past defines who he should be now; even though heâs never gone into too much detail, youâre willing to believe he didnât do anything worse than most of the people living in Jackson now.
âWe all deserve this, Joel.â You catch your fingers in the curls over his collar. âEven you.â
The music swells and in turn, he spins you slightly, making you giggle. For the moment, heâs completely focused on you â not Ellie and Dina, not Tommy and Maria who have joined in a few feet away.
Just you.
âYouâre too kind to me, honey.â
You shake your head. âNo, I think Iâm just the right amount.â
Joelâs lips curve again, and he pulls you just a bit tighter against him. You take the opportunity and rest your cheek against his heart, listening to the strong, steady beat as he sways you around. You donât miss the wink from Tommy as you pass by, or the way Ellieâs eyes shimmer as she swings past you.
Youâve always liked the Miller family, and it seems like the feeling is mutual.
Youâre even more sure of it when Joelâs got you pressed against the front of his house, his lips on your throat and his hands under the hem of your shirt.
âGet a fuckinâ room!â
Ellieâs laugh echoes across the front yard as you feel your face get hot. Joel, on the other hand, simply laughs into your skin and his fingers press a little harder against your spine.
EXCUSE ME?! Dropping this on me in the middle of a sweltering Dublin⌠frankly rude.
But if this isnât the perfect response to that image, despite all the pain and sadness we know is associated with it in canon. It takes a special kind of talent to conjure up a whole moment, a whole mood like this, in just a couple of hundred words.

Title: I Could Find My Way Back (Marcus Pike/f!Reader)
Rating:Â Mature
Word count:Â 3590

Reader is unnamed; Marcus (and other characters) uses nicknames (i.e.: âSunnyâ, âsweetheartâ, âchicaâ). Reader identifies as female but is otherwise unspecific and undescribed.
Notes:Â In the interest of standing by my belief that fiction can be used to Work Through It, this is a very personal one. And as such, it is maybe not applicable to everyone, but I attempted to approach it with respect and kindness and I hope it rings true enough for someone else.

The last time you saw Marcus, you were both eighteen, both stupid kids in love but with no idea how to handle it. Youâd been preparing for your trip west for college; he was headed south. Daily phone calls turned into weekly letters, into bi-monthly check-ins, into Christmas and birthday cards.
You lost touch soon before it happened, and in more than one therapy session youâd openly wondered if that was to blame for your stupid choices. (Your doctor insisted that was normal but very, very untrue.)
And, nearly twenty-five years later, when you walk into the bar and hear a familiar, long-ago guffaw, your heart skips a beat and your breath catches in your throat.
The laugh causes him to toss his head back, and as he lifts it to normal height again, his eyes slide past you â and then back to you.
âHoly fucking shit.â
Despite your nostalgic shock, you grin brightly. âHeya, Marc.â
Heâs off his stool and wrapped around you before you can say any more. âJesus, Sunny, are you real?â he murmurs against your ear. âIâve only had two beers so you have to be.â
âIâm real, Marcus,â you giggle, hugging him back. His patchy facial hair is thicker than when he was a stubbly kid, his hair a little longer, a little curlier, and a little greyer, but deep in the recesses of your memory he smells and feels and energizes the exact same as your high school sweetheart. The fact that he immediately falls back on your nickname from the old days makes the nostalgia even stronger.
His friends all but abandoned at the bar after a quick explanation, the two of you settle at a small table towards the back of the pub, Marcusâ beer now sitting opposite your Jack and Coke.
âIâm guessing youâre back for the reunion?â he asks, his thumb and index finger stroking and pulling lightly on your pinky.
Itâs as if no time has passed, the comfort is so easy.
You nod, taking a sip of your slightly-too-strong drink. âYeah. Wasnât gonna, but had someâŚunexpected time off work,â you explain. (He doesnât need to know that you were forced into taking your two-week vacation because your entire department was worried you were about five minutes from a burnout breakdown.) âFigured it couldnât hurt to come back and see some folks.â
âLike me?â His voice is airy, teasing.
âNo. Like Kevin.â
Marcus groans. âOh, god, heâs gonna try to steal you away from me again, just like in school.â
You laugh. âIsnât he married now?â
âYeah,â he replies. âA really nice woman named Lily. Never thought Kev would be the settling down kind, but theyâre happy. Expecting a little boy soon, too.â
You remember something else youâd heard. âYouâre married, too, no?â
âNo,â he replies, and the sadness passes quickly. âI was, for a little while. It didnât work out so Iâm on my own again.â
âIâm sorry, Marc. That sucks.â
âMm, itâs alright. Iâve moved on.â Marcus takes a swig of his drink and eyes you. âWhat about you? Husband? Boyfriend? Kids?â
You bite the inside of your cheek. âNone of the above.â
âGirlfriend?â
âMarcus!â
âJust checking.â He grins, eyes sparkling. âHas it been a long time?â
Pretty much since right after you, you think. But this isnât the time.
âA while, yeah.â
He takes another mouthful. âA shame,â he mutters when he can speak again.
You almost think you misheard.
âSo that settles it. Youâre my date to the reunion.â
âWhat?â
Marcus pinches the skin of your hand. âYou heard me. You and me, just like old times. That sound okay?â
You feel like you donât have much of a choice, but youâre also pretty okay with that. âUh, yeah. Sure, I guess?â
âGood. Where are you staying?â
You give him the address of the Airbnb youâre in, and he nods. âAlright. Iâll pick you up at five tomorrow, okay?â
âY-yeah, okay.â
He finishes his beer, then watches â somewhat impressed â as you down the remainder of your own drink. âIâm really glad youâre back, Sunny.â
âMe, too, Marc.â
You arenât lying.
After several different outfit choices, youâre finally settled and smoothing your striped sweater over the top of your slim black pants, your shoes cute but practical for a night thatâll probably involve far more standing than sitting. You fix your hair quickly as you hear the beep of the horn outside, and grab your phone and purse before running out and locking the door behind you.
Marcus isnât dressed that much differently than he was at the bar, though now his button down is secured under a blue polka-dotted tie and his jeans have been replaced with a pair of grey slacks. Heâs also combed his hair a bit more neatly, though the breeze blowing through the truckâs window has some softly-curly strands falling over his forehead.
You step up to the driverâs seat and rest an elbow on the frame as you lean in to kiss his cheek. âYou ready for this? We can still skip out if you want.â
He smiles. âHow about we go, and if, after an hour, itâs boring as shit, we sneak out and go to Johnnyâs instead?â
Itâs the same plan as when you were in school. Johnnyâs is the diner on the edge of town â you were shocked to see it was still open when your cab passed it on the way in â and the best place to be a little private and a lot out of the way. You and Marcus had always had a code: if you were at a party or an event or a school thing and you wanted out, it was as simple as a little, âHey, arenât we supposed to meet John?â and you knew it was time to go.
âSounds like a plan,â you reply, winking as you walk around the front of the truck and climbing into the passengerâs seat beside him.
The drive to the high school isnât long, and the silence between you â punctuated by Springsteenâs greatest hits â is light and breezy. Marcus has always been a careful driver, and youâre happy enough to just watch the old haunts go by out your window as you both breathe-sing to âThunder Roadâ.
When he parks in the lot, heâs actually at your door before you can get out, and he offers his arm. âCâmon, just like when we were kids,â he reminds you. You roll your eyes but accept, your hand gripping his bicep as you head into the gymnasium.
âPike, that cannot be who I think it is!â
Youâd recognize Kevin Garciaâs voice anywhere. Marcusâs best friend since childhood, heâs always been loud and boisterous and probably a little more trouble than anyone should be, but youâd always really liked him like a brother.
âKev, be nice,â Marcus warns, but itâs too late â Kevin has you up in his strong arms, spinning you despite the height and weight you have on him.
âHoly shit, chica, youâre prettier than you were in high school.â
You roll your eyes, hiding your embarrassment. âCould say the same, Kev.â Heâs gorgeous â chiseled from marble, you and your girlfriends had always joked. His brown eyes are lighter than Marcusâ, but just as easy to lose yourself in; his features are gruffer; his hair more tightly curled. If you hadnât been spoken for all through high school you might have given him a fair shot. (His friendship with Marcus hadnât stopped the occasional flirtation from him, anyway.)
Kevin introduces you to Lily, a statuesque redhead with more freckles than youâve ever seen and a belly that seems to threaten to topple her with one wrong move. Kevinâs palm stays right on it, cautious and protective the whole time the four of you talk, and you canât help but smile.
You break away from the Garcias after a bit, promising to catch up more before you head home, and you find yourself heading to the catering tables while Marcus stops to chat with a group of people you donât know very well.
âHey, you.â
You freeze in place as youâre filling your plate, your blood running cold. Despite every single instinct in your entire being telling you to just drop it and run, you donât â instead you take a single, deep breath and look up.
It canât be him. It canât. Last youâd heard from your lawyers, he had moved out to Arkansas once he was released, and youâd figured that was the end of it.
But it is him. The same sharp, ice-blue eyes. The same swoop of auburn hair, though artificial now.
That same shark-toothed grin.
âI⌠Iâve gotta â â The words donât come, but you run, your plate finally discarded on the table.
You hear him calling out for you but you refuse to turn, your heart pounding in your ears as you desperately look for Marcus.
âHey, hey, slow down.â Itâs Kevinâs voice, his hand on your arm gently. âYou alright?â
âI â I need to find Marcus,â you breathe, and youâre annoyed to realize there are tears clogging your throat. âHave you seen him?â
Kevin gestures over his shoulder. âBack by the hoop talking to one of the teachers,â he said. âWhatâs wrong? Are you okay?â
You wish you could answer but youâre just not ready. Instead, you fake a smile and hurry off, leaving him confused as you beeline towards Marcus.
âJohn just called,â you manage as soon as youâre in earshot. Marcus turns to you, eyebrow lifted, but when he sees your expression, he adjusts. âWeâve gotta go.â
âOkay.â Thereâs no question. He says his goodbye to Mr. Williams, his arm snaking around your waist. You know youâre shaking, you can feel it yourself, but you hope he wonât ask â at least, not now. With a little wave to Kevin and Lily who are not far from the door youâre headed towards, you keep close to Marcusâ body and keep your head down.
He doesnât ask questions, doesnât say a word until youâre in the car and about fifteen blocks from the school. Itâs only then that he pulls into the empty parking lot of a local bank and puts the car in park.
âHey. Sunny, are you okay? What happened? Whatâs wrong?â
âNo, itâs nothing, itâsâŚâ
You lose control when his hand comes to rest on your knee. Two decades of tears stream from your eyes as you gasp for air, and Marcus jumps out of the car to come to your door and pull you into his arms. Youâre still in your seat, but tucked tightly against his chest, your body racked with sobs and your chest burning as you struggle to regain control.
To his credit, Marcus doesnât push. He holds you, one hand cupping the back of your head, the other stroking gentle lines up your back. You know youâre staining his sweater with your tears, but he gives no indication that it bothers him. Instead, he murmurs in your ear, âItâs alright, itâs okayâ over and over.
âI â â You try to speak, and itâs difficult, but you know you need to get the words out. âI canât â I canât tell you here,â you finally manage. âSomeone might hear.â
Thereâs some kind of fear in Marcusâ eyes when he pulls back to meet yours. âOh, sweetheart,â he breathes. âAlright. Do you want to go back to the apartment, or do you want to come to mine?â
An irrational thought comes into your head: What if he knows where Iâm staying?
âCan we go to yours?â
âOf course.â He brushes your cheeks with his palms. âAre you okay? Do you want to wait a few more minutes?â
You shake your head. âNo. I donât want to⌠I want to get out of here.â
Marcus smiles comfortingly and presses a kiss to your forehead. âIâve got you, Sunny.â
It isnât until youâre settled on the couch, your still-shaking hands wrapped around a mug of tea, that Marcus joins you, his dark eyes soft and concerned.
âDo you want to talk?â
You nod, and Marcus shifts closer, his knee bumping against yours as he rests an arm across the back of the sofa, right along your shoulders.
âI was at the catering table,â you start. âAnd Mr. Mason came up to me.â
âThe chemistry teacher?â
You nod. Marcus doesnât pry, letting you tell the story on your own time, but his thumb strokes over the back of your neck gently.
âEveryone knows he was a bit of a weirdo, right?â
âI never had him as a teacher, but yeah, I heard he was a littleâŚoff.â
You take a deep breath. âHe wasnât just off, Marc.â A pause. âAfter we graduated, I ran into him at the movies one night. My friends wanted to go to a club after, and I didnât, so Mr. Mason offered to drive me home.â
Your heart is racing, and youâre not sure the words will come out, but you close your eyes and force them past your lips. âWe never made it to my house. HeâŚhe raped me and left me on the street a mile from home.â
When you manage to look up again, Marcusâ handsome face is white with rage. His hand has stilled behind you, his thumb against the bend of your shoulder.
âAnd he justâŚshowed up today?â Thereâs something new to his voice, something dark and sinister in it. Youâre moved to put your cup down and press your palms to his thigh.
âHe went to jail for five years,â you explain. âIt was a miracle he even got that.â This part feels easier, somehow. âThey tried toâŚsay it was my fault, that Iâd enticed him. But he had bruises from where I fought back. It was enough, I guess.â You sigh. âWhen he got out, my lawyers told me they said heâd beenâŚrehabilitated. He registered and moved away. IâŚdidnât think Iâd ever see him again, but today⌠He was right there. Marc, I could feel him, he was so close.â
You can feel his body trembling under your hands, and you wonder if telling him was the right thing to do. Marcus is in the FBI. Youâve known this for years, been aware of his career, and telling him about your assault and the fact that the man who did it is still around might not be the best move on your part. He may be your sweet, kind, loving friend â but heâs also a trained law enforcement agent.
âDid he touch you tonight?â
Youâre startled back to the moment. âN-no. He just said hi, really casual. I couldnât even reply. I panicked and ran to you.â
âIâll fucking kill him.â
You tighten your fingers on his leg, shaking your head viciously. âNo. Marcus, no. I donât even know if he wanted anything other than to say hiâŚâ
âHe has no right!â He pushes off the couch, away from you. âHe hurt you. And then he gets to come back and pretend heâs just your old teacher? Who the hell let him back into that school?â
You can feel tears pricking at your eyelashes again and you drop your hands into your own lap. âItâs been twenty-four years, Marc,â you whisper. âHeâs been out longer than he was in. It doesnât mean much to anyone anymore, so long as heâs not back to teaching. Iâm an adult â they canât legally make him stay away from me after all this time, not unless he does something again.â
âThis is insane,â Marcus roars. âIâm going back. Iâm going to confront him.â
âMarcus, no.â You climb to your feet, this time catching his face in your hands. âI wanted you to know but I donât want you to do anything stupid.â
âHe hurt you, Sunny,â he says, gripping your forearms lightly. âShit, I should have taken you with me when I left that summer.â
âItâs not your fault,â you reply. âOr mine. Legally, he got his punishment. It doesnât matter how I feel about it now â heâs done his time.â
âBut youâŚâ
âI survived, Marc,â you say, the tears falling again. âItâs been hell, but Iâm here. And I found you again, so that tells me I did something right.â
âI should have stayed with you. Or taken you with me,â he repeats, and you see his eyes shimmering just the same. âI wish Iâd have been here to protect you.â
âYou protected me tonight, Marc.â You take a tiny step closer, your body up against his. âGod, Iâm sorry. I should never have told you.â Letting your hands fall slack, they end up on his shoulders as you press your forehead to his chest. âItâs not on you, at all. I just⌠I donât know why, but I needed you to know. Selfishly.â
You feel Marcusâ arms slip around you, careful, like youâre made of porcelain. His lips press to the top of your head, his breath shaky as he holds you again. âNot selfish,â he murmurs. âIâm so sorry, sweetheart. Iâm sorry it happened. Iâm sorry I wasnât there for you after. Iâm sorry youâre still so scared now.â He tightens his grip, just a little. âI never stopped loving you,â he admits, and your heart skips several beats. âAnd now I wish Iâd have told you that before, because maybe things would have been different.â
You lift your eyes to meet his again, and his face is so stained with tears your own threaten to increase tenfold. âIâm sad you left, but Iâm glad you didnât know me right after,â you say honestly. âI wish no one did.â
âAnd now?â
You sigh, bringing a hand to your face to wipe your cheeks. âNot perfect, but getting better.â
Marcusâ fingers flex against your spine. âCould say the same about me, in some ways.â You giggle despite yourself, and he closes his eyes. âSorry. Very different scenarios.â
âDonât apologize.â You drag a line over his collarbone with your fingertips. âWhat a fucking pair we are, huh?â
His lips quirk a bit. âChaos as always,â he replies. He lifts your right hand, pressing his lips to your palm. âDo you want to go back? I wonât leave your side for a moment.â
You shake your head. âNo. Iâm sorry to miss seeing people, and weâll have to call Kevin and apologize, but I canât go back there, Marc.â
âYouâre right,â he says. âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have suggested it.â
âI need you to stop saying sorry,â you urge. âAnd I need one more thing from you.â
âWhatâs that?â
You smile softly for the first time in hours; you know, for the first time since leaving the reunion, that it isnât the trauma speaking. âKiss me.â
Shock crosses Marcusâ features, but theyâre gone almost instantly and instead, he leans in and captures your mouth with his own, his fingers tilting your chin up to give him better access. In the moment, nothing matters anymore â the past, the trauma, the fear and the pain is all gone as the present takes control and your body reacts to Marcus, back in your arms where he belongs and holding you like youâll disappear if he lets go.
You wake to the sunlight on your face and the feel of Marcusâ arm around your waist, his breath against your forehead. Youâd spent the rest of the night making up for lost time, the conversation between kisses moving from careers to families to life in general. Youâd fallen asleep first, barely waking up when Marcus helped you from the couch to his bed, only just aware enough to curl into him as he climbed in behind you.
Peeling yourself out of his grip, you slip out of his bed and down the hallway to the bathroom. In the mirrorâs reflection, you see your eyes are still somewhat puffy from crying; your lips are slightly chapped from Marcusâ facial hair. Your makeup is smudged and you groan, grabbing the bar soap on the sink to wash your face best as you can, grateful when you spot a bottle of lotion that will at least somewhat make up for the harsh scrub.
Your sweater smells a bit stale, and you slip it off, grateful for the black tank youâd worn underneath it. You peek into Marcusâ medicine cabinet and find his deodorant, using just enough to make yourself feel just a little better and revelling in the spicy scent you know from him now on your own skin.
When you get back to the bedroom, Marcus is stretching, his eyes bleary as he looks down the bed towards you. âI thought youâd left,â he says, his voice thick with sleep.
You climb in beside him again, sliding your arms around him and pressing a kiss to his patchy beard. âI wouldnât do that,â you reply. âNot without telling you.â
He strokes a line along your cheek. âDo you wanna get breakfast at Johnnyâs before I take you back to your Airbnb?â
âMm, thatâd be nice,â you reply. I donât want to go back, though. I want to stay here.
As if he can read your mind, he smiles. âYou can bring stuff here if you wanna stay a few more days. Iâll pay off your room fees.â He kisses your nose. âActually, Iâd really like it if you would stay.â
âI think Iâd like that too.â You hold his gaze. âMarc?â
âMm?â
âIâm glad I came home.â
He grins, this time kissing you deeply. âMe, too, Sunny. Me, too.â
