Unpopular opinion maybe but I don't actually hate Val?????
Like she wasn't my favorite character in the show but like I don't understand the hate she's gotten from the majority of the fandom.
I don't know if it's because Mindy Kaling voices her and I know she is not everyone's favorite person (*cough*Velma*cough*). Yeah she can be insufferable irl and I wish they casted someone else to play Val. Mindy is not NOT funny and he has a controversial history of perpetuating stereotypes, racial insensitivity, transphobia and a list too long to name here. Like.... why they picked HER of all people i will never know....
HOWEVER, voice acting aside, Val as a character is not that bad.
Maybe the writers tried too hard to make her awkward and adorkable instead of letting her comedy come more natural... it seemed they were kind of going for the buddy comedy dynamic Dory and Marlin have in Finding Nemo. But maybe it just felt a little forced at times?
But honestly even if she comes off slightly annoying at times she didn't bother me that much as a character. Her upbeat positivity is a perfect foil to Tylor, who's the straight man in the cast (comedy wise that is).
Also I don't know why some were saying she acted ''immature'' when Tylor didn't give her the same level of respect she was giving him... like I really felt she wasn't wrong????? I love Tylor but Tylor was a selfish jerk tbh-- he was always making everything about himself and Val always went out of her way to listen to his concerns.... but he never once listened to her. Like during the Baseball game she kept trying to talk to him about moving from being his assistant to actually being a Jokester... making kids laugh comes more natural to her and she found her true calling. I was kind of sensing a parallel here with Mike and Sulley... how Mike wanted to be the Top Scarer, but obviously, Sulley had the natural ability for Scaring that Mike did not.
Tylor was a lousy Jokester because he was clearly born to be a Scarer, and he was probably jealous that Val had the talent he lacked but he should have been more supportive of her decision to do something for herself.
I can almost imagine this is maybe what broke the friendship between Mike and Randy in Monsters University even if we didn't see it happen on screen. They both started out with the same dream of becoming a Scarer but of course Mike got kicked out of the program and then he and Randy quietly went their separate ways. It's possible Mike was so self-absorbed in his own ambitions that he wasn't always there for Randy the same way Randy was there for him... we see Randy constantly supporting Mike as his loyal sidekick... he could have chosen ROR over Mike's friendship because he needed to do something for himself. Maybe Mike was holding him back from achieving his own dreams and ambitions.
Anyway, Tylor and Val do have a brief falling out but thankfully they make up. Maybe that's something Mike and Randy lacked was communication. Tylor and Val at least tried to communicate.
But yeah it seems the fandom places a lot of the blame on Val for this friendship being ''toxic'' but I don't see it that way. Tylor is just as much to blame... and this seems to be common with female characters in general, they seem to be more harshly criticized for doing the same actions that the male characters do. Like if the roles were reversed and Tylor acted like Val, the fandom would be more forgiving of him. Like I said, Tylor can be immature at times too but no one's calling him out for it the same way they do with Val. I don't think Val and Tylor are toxic or that Val is ''to controlling''--they have their disagreements like any friends do. Neither of them are perfect but they're working on being better people. I'm sure their friendship will develop more in Season 3.
Tylor was an asshole to MIFT in the beginning, calling them weirdos and doubting that they can do anything, but you guys get mad when Val isn’t nice to him 24/7 365? Interesting 🤨

Barley has grown up surrounded by love, not only he loves and is loved by his family but his parents always had a loving relationship, even after losing his father Laurel made sure her beloved sons never forgot their father, to remember them with love, she continued with her life and found love again eventually, Barley has always been surrounded by love, pure and gentle love
Still, that it is just one of the reasons why he goes over board when he finally found someone to love and that loved him back, he hasn't grown to be such a yearner because someone taught him, he is extrovert and affectionate, it is in him to be so expressive and open with his love, the fact that he has grown up surrounded by love only makes him think that loving so openly and sincerely it is how it should be, that it is right to be so loving
Of course, his love for fantasy only gives him an even bigger boost to express his love with grand gestures, things that may look exaggerated or overly cheesy but that comes out of nothing but love. It isn't Barley’s fault that you are so beautiful! so lovable! He sometimes wonder if you have casted some kind of spell on him because loving someone so much feel forbidden, and yet, if that was the case he would simply happily accept his fate of forever loving you
Barley may look overly cheesy whenever he offers his arm for you to take before start walking, why his eyes are glued to you whenever you talk, by how he always holds the doors open for you, holding your hand to help you get in and out of his van, sometimes even leaving a kiss in your knuckles before letting go of your hand, but heavens, if it means that he will make you smile, perhaps even laugh a bit then he will do it over and over again, without even a second of hesitation or embarrassment, because your smile makes his cheeks burn and makes his heart flutter, because just being able to make you smile makes his life brighter
With how energetic and extrovert Barley is there is no doubt that you two never get bored, he always has something to say, something silly to make you laugh or finding a way to relate whatever you were talking about/what was happening with something in his favorite game or even with mages
Of course, Barley never does it with bad intention and if he ends up talking so much at your side it is because you are willing to listen, he has always been someone talkative but the fact that you don't make faces or try to cut the conversation always encourages him to continue talking, even if he doesn't realize it he feels more and more attracted by you, becoming used to always think on you whenever he learns something new or has something to share and not only because you are his beloved partner
Bit by bit Barley starts to become more aware of the fact that you actually listen, you not just let him rant, you pay attention, you ask for him to clarify something you didn't fully understood and ask him to tell you more when something caught your attention, you even bring up a fact he told you once randomly in your conversation or with others like he normally does
It takes time but eventually he gets to realize how much attention you actually pay to him, he becomes more aware and start paying attention to those little hints you give that you are actually paying attention, getting stuck in his mind for a long time, replaying over and over again in his mind until he ask his mother if it isn't too strange for him to feel like you are the only one he could ever love like this and to wish to spend the rest of his days with

When your boyfriend first told you he’s leaving to seek for magic left in the world, you thought he was crazy. Magic was extinct, it had been searched in large numbers before, but nobody ever found it. Finding magic was just as unlikely as finding a treasure chest full of gold and diamonds in the front of your house one morning — no, the chances were even worse than that. You weren’t sure what you could compare it to, but everything would lead to the same conclusion. Magic no longer existed, and Barley was wasting his time.
But now, when you stood at that field… you realised you were wrong. You could just feel magic in the air, whispering into your ear, caressing your arms. Spirits were with you there, ready to guide you forward and, eventually, hopefully, get enough magic for the brothers to spend just a few moments with their father.
You looked at the magic dust floating in the air with sparkling eyes, and Barley chuckled from behind you. “Well, do you believe in magic now?”
You turned to look at him with the biggest smile he had ever seen. “This is magnificent.”
He hummed in agreement, looking at the magic particles, before glancing at the campfire where Ian and his father’s legs sat, Ian warming his hands up. “We should reach the source tomorrow.”
You laid a hand on top of his, intertwining your fingers. “Your father doesn’t have much time left.”
He sighed, looking at your joined hands. “Just thirty seconds would be enough, just so we can tell him we love him and I can tell him I’m sorry. I want him to pass knowing none of us is angry about him leaving.”
You were quiet for a moment, looking at the specks of light floating in the air, before you blurted out, “Do you want to dance?”
He frowned. “Dance?”
You grabbed his other hand, keeping them in front of you. “Yeah. This place can’t get more romantic.”
He let out a little laugh, trying to wipe out how he was about to cry just a moment ago. “You know I can’t dance.”
“Then just sway with me,” you muttered. “I’d really like to feel your arms around me right now, and you look like you need a hug too.”
He considered it for a moment, before stepping forward, letting go of your hands and instead wrapping his arms around you. “Like this?”
“Yeah,” you sighed, a soft smile on your face as you wrapped your own arms around him, and started to sway. “Exactly like that.”
