In elementary school and middle school, my sister, a few other kids down the road, and I explored through the woods so thoroughly that we found a pretty, shaded clearing (judging by the dip of the ground, in retrospect, I suspect it might have been a young sinkhole in the works).

There was a tree that had somehow grown horizontally, and we used the limbs as coat racks, hooks for our backpacks, and there was a large oak tree along the perimeter that I'd built a ladder solely from smaller trees I'd cut down myself beyond our clearing. It was like a hideout from a children's book, only rivaled in coolness by the boxcar that the Boxcar Children lived in, and it became my retreat from the silly things that made me angry. I'd pack my backpack full of books and drawing materials, grab my cassette player, and hike out to the hideout with my old cat Snowflake following close behind, and there I would spend hours in the breezy quiet of my woodsy isolation, reading, drawing, or napping with Snowflake.

A little odd, but hardly a terrible thing. I don't mind having someone beaming with pride in my corner; support's support, you know?
