JIM:
THERE IS THAT FEAR AND TREPIDATIONĀ settlingĀ overĀ jimĀ likeĀ aĀ stormyĀ cloud .Ā nowĀ wouldnātĀ beĀ aĀ goodĀ timeĀ toĀ voiceĀ allĀ thatĀ heĀ hasĀ beenĀ goingĀ throughĀ since ,Ā Ā Ā theĀ incident .Ā Ā Ā mainlyĀ becauseĀ bonesĀ isĀ alreadyĀ pissedĀ offĀ atĀ theĀ situation .Ā findingĀ outĀ jimĀ hadĀ beenĀ keepingĀ informationĀ formĀ him ,Ā wellĀ thatādĀ beĀ theĀ icingĀ onĀ theĀ cake .Ā theĀ captainĀ isĀ caughtĀ betweenĀ aĀ rockĀ andĀ aĀ hardĀ place .Ā damnedĀ ifĀ youĀ do .Ā damnedĀ ifĀ youĀ donāt .Ā Ā Ā āĀ okay . āĀ Ā heĀ muttersĀ softly ,Ā scootingĀ backĀ alongĀ theĀ bioĀ bedĀ soĀ itĀ holdsĀ hisĀ fullĀ weight .Ā itĀ isnātĀ goingĀ toĀ beĀ fun ,Ā butĀ theĀ captainĀ canĀ alreadyĀ predictĀ whatĀ mccoyĀ willĀ find .
āBEFORE I DO THISā¦ā teeth sink into his bottom lip, a slightly trembling hand ( steadiest hands in the galaxy, ha ) runs through hair damp with sweat. he needs a shower, he needs sleep, he needs out of sickbay right now. but he canāt. itās gonna be hours yet before he can leave. ābefore I do this, jim,ā he tries again, he has to try again, āI need to know what youāve been keepinā from me---and donāt tell me itās nothinā, cus you donāt seem awful surprised by all this.ā lenās not⦠it isnāt anger. heās just tired, heartsick for his friend, for what heās done.

THE GREEK GOD / GODDESS YOU REFLECT MOST
BONES GOT: ARES
ares is the greek god of WAR, and often represents the physical or violent and untamed aspect of war. an association with ares endows places and objects with a savage, dangerous, or militarised quality. when ares does appear in myths, he typically faces humiliation. despite negative context, ares is strong and fearless in the face of danger, and fights for himself and those he loves.
TAGGED BY: @diedsaving TAGGING: uhhhh, anyone who hasnāt done this yet!Ā
CRAZY GIRL:
Ā Ā He was right ā she didnātĀ know. What the word meant, what that feeling was like ā being afraid of falling? No. It wasnāt scary to be flying ā to be in the open ā to be free.Ā
Ā Ā It was the opposite that was fucking mortifying, so much so that sheād fight with every tooth and nail she had to escape it, no matter how much it hurt herĀ ā no matter how much it hurt anyone!Ā
Ā Ā Sheād never get being afraid to be free.Ā
Ā Ā Well. At least not for very many years. At least not until after Tallow was back, and then gone again, for good. At least not until after Akan. At least not until after seeing Len happy, with his own family ā without her.Ā
Ā Ā At least not for very, very many more years.Ā
Ā Ā Tonight, she was still laying under a canopy of stars and staring into soft, gentle eyes. Tonight, she was smiling hard, but somewhat sad, as she turned closer to him. The curve of her body was resting against his.Ā
Ā Ā āItās not just Tallow. Itās everyone. Iām not āā Sheās searching for the right words. Theyāll never come to her. āIām a fuck-up, dude. Iām just⦠fucked up. So like⦠maybe I am different, but⦠not in a good way. A bad kind of special, yāknow? A sad-special.āĀ
He was as hesitant as he would be dealing with a skittish colt as he lifted an arm, let it rest across Willowās shoulders. Len tucked her in against his side, cheek resting against her hair with a sigh. This was⦠it was nice. Simple. Easy. But there was sadness tainting his contentment, seeping in beneath his skin like a poison. He liked to consider himself a generally happy person, if not slightly hot-headed and cynical. Misery wasnāt his style. Ā
āForget him. Forget all them ā anyone who thinks youāre a screw-up. Youāre a kid, Willow. Same as me.ā At least, he thought she was. He didnāt actually know how old Willow was. But his point still stood. āThatās what beinā young is about ā messinā up, learninā from it.ā He squeezed her shoulders gently, letting out another breezy sigh. āYouāre not a bad special, Willow. I donāt care how many times you tryān tell me you are ā I know youāre a good kinda special.ā
Len lifted his gaze from the shingles on the roof to the stars just starting to wink into existence on the inky background of the night sky. The view from the McCoysā roof was a spectacular one, even he had to admit that. It was why he and his dad climbed up there as often as they did, after all. āā¦whatās it like? Up there? Runninā through the stars⦠must be quite a timeā¦ā
JIM:
Jim had the glass up to his lips when Bones issued his warning, and the blond sighed softly and took a rather small sip instead of downing it like heād originally planned. Bones knew him too well, and Jim had to be thankful for that, at least ā being a captain meant he couldnāt really afford to go on bendersĀ whenever he got upset. Not that he didnāt WANT to because goddamn, he really wanted to.Ā āLeave it to McCoy to be the voice of reason while Iām drowning in thoughts and feelings.ā
Jim managed to laugh a little, his gaze drifting toward the window again ā he was dead tired, overworked and wishing shore leave was in his near future. Or at least, something slightlyĀ more interesting than the emptiness that deep space had offered them in the past few weeks.Ā āI donāt need sleep, Iām fine.ā A badĀ lie, Jim. Youāve never been good at lying to your best friend.Ā āI mean, unless you wanted to keep me company⦠my bed is big enough for two and, I wonāt lie⦠I always sleep better when youāre nearby.ā
Maybe, if youāre there, I wonāt have nightmares.
āYou know all you gotta do is ask if you want company, Jim.ā Len set his glass down, moved around the bar so he could drop onto the stool next to the other man, their knees bumping together in a fond, familiar way. āAnd youāre a bad liar, Jim-boy. You know you canāt get anythinā by me.ā It was a finely-honed skill of his, being able to catch Jim in a lie, even when he was in top form. Not to say his best friend was dishonest with him all that much, but Jim seemed to have a certain⦠disregard, for his own health and wellbeing, which meant he heard āIām fineā with disturbing frequency.
It wasnāt as though theyād never shared a bed before, he pondered to himself, that had just been something theyād done at the academy, and on the ship when things got bad. It was⦠comforting, being able to hold Jim and know he was there, know he was safe. Seemed to keep the nightmares at bay, too, which was just an added bonus. āCāmon, finish your drink. ām tired.ā He nudged Jim with his elbow, slipping down from his stool and wandering around the bar again to clear up. The bourbon was returned to its shelf, where it was gonna sit until the next time they needed it ā hopefully that wouldnāt be for a while.
ELMIRA:
It didnāt take her by surpriseāLen had made his intentions very clearābut still El managed to be shocked. She all but forgot about the key in her hand; her free hand coming up to the back of his neck just to keep him there. Like in a moment El would come to her senses and Len would disappear in a puff of smoke. She pulled back, not out of any fault of either of them, but rather necessity on Elās life. She kissed the corner of his mouth, trying to regain her composure so she wouldnāt buckle. It had been too long since sheād been this giddy. El let her hand trace his cheek, her eyes dancing over Lenās face. Sheād always admired it, but to see it this up close⦠She felt like a teen again, only this time she wasnāt afraid. She had no reason to be. He was Len and he was safe. She gave in, closing the gap between them and savouring the moment.
It was easy, to lose himself in how warm she was, pressed against him like she was, and it was easier still to get a gentle grip on her waist, shuffle them around until he could back her up against the door. She tasted of the bourbon theyād been drinking and something else he couldnāt identify, wasnāt interested in identifying at the moment. She was so beautiful, how had he never noticed how beautiful she was? It was taking his breath away ā or that might just have been the fact that they hadnāt parted for air in too long. He managed to pull away with a gasp, breathless like he hadnāt been in⦠quite some time. He didnāt go far, pressing their foreheads together to keep them close. A gentle squeeze of her hips, a quiet sigh⦠this night had definitely taken a turn he hadnāt expected. āā¦We should⦠probāly⦠head inā¦ā But he didnāt move, and he wasnāt about to let her go anywhere either.Ā

ELMIRA:
Elmira hadnāt meant to fall asleep, it was just supposed to be a stop over to calm her down, and then sheād go back to Lenās room. But when she woke up she was still in the guest bed, and despite her painkillers having (noticeably) worn off she was inexplicably happy. And, to the best of her knowledge, she had no reason to be. She rolled out of the bed, wrapping her arms around her middle. She shuffled out to the kitchen where she could hear Len, running her hands through her hair so it wasnāt sticking up at strange angles. āHey,ā El smiled, and for a moment she had to frown at how natural it all felt. There wasnāt a part of her that was thinking hey, this is weird, āsorry about crawling into bed with you; I didnātāā Mean to? Yeah, she did. So she just shrugged, there was a vague memory of Len pulling her in when she really wasnāt okay. āThank-you. For last night.ā
āYouāre welcome, darlinā.ā The petname rolled off his tongue without thought, and he paused for a moment to marvel over how natural it felt, applying it to Elmira. Alright, it was his go-to, but still⦠thereād never been so much warm affection in it before when heād jokingly thrown it Elmiraās way. Apparently, the world had decided it wanted to go all topsy-turvy on him today and he was honestly too tired to fight that. āYou got any requests for breakfast? Iām makinā bacon, eggs and hash browns.ā Classic post-night shift staples. āI can do pancakes if you wantā¦? Theyāll take a little longer, but Jo swears by Mommaās recipe.ā As well she should, his mommaās recipes were the best around, if he did say so himself. He mighta been biased, though. Shaking his head with a chuckle, Len busied himself collecting his ingredients, dropping an absentminded kiss to the top of Elās head as he went by.

<< TOLD THEM I WAS GOING TO THINK ABOUT IT. >> but he knew he wouldnāt be taking the position, no matter how much the head of surgery at med hq begged, cajoled or bargained. heād follow jim, wherever the other wanted to lead him. a roll of his shoulders served as a shrug and he let his eyes wander over the other patrons in the restaurant for a few long moments before returning his attention to the other man. << you know Iām not going to take it. I just wanted to know what youād think about it. me staying on earth. >> no, his future was already playing out differently in his head; danger and disease, wrapped in darkness and silence.Ā

JIM:
really, he wants to hash it out right here & now.Ā push bones the subject past the point of no return, to the point itād be a fight.Ā itād be easier that way ( part of him always knew itād only be a matter of time until THIS happened.Ā ), but jim only watches him go.Ā sometimes space, isolation,Ā is good too.Ā thereās a wall to build ā bullshit, but old habits are hard to shake.Ā he blames the morbid curiosity ( & guilt, maybe? ) that makes him stop by bonesā quarters as heās finishing up his morning run.
he shrugs.Ā howās he supposed to know how long, EXACTLY, the otherās been out?Ā the computerād probably have a better answer than he did.Ā āyou stumbled out of my office about fourteen hours ago.Ā iām only guessing that you came straight here, bones.āĀ a fair guess.Ā the right one, he knows.Ā ābelieve it or not, my schedule doesnātĀ revolve around hounding you.āĀ that last bit isnāt fair, but since when has he EVER been able to stop himself while heās ahead?Ā kirk breaks his gaze briefly, long enough to lick at chapped lips, to reset.Ā āiāll let you get back to it.Ā i just wanted to make sure you hadnāt āāĀ hadnāt what?Ā if itād been him, heādāve done something stupid; ignored his basic needs in favor of alcohol, as per usual, ( sans thrown punches, obviously ) probably.Ā but, similar as they are, bones as always seemed a little more RATIONAL in his coping mechanisms.Ā ā ā drowned in your own drool or something.āĀ jim swallows then, takes a deep breath.Ā Ā āi gotta get showered & up to the bridge so, um, whenever you want to talk, let me know.ā
he wants to talk about it NOW, because he doesnāt want this hanging over their heads the way it obviously is. lenās tempted to ask jim if heās bullshitting him about having a shift, but he already knows the answer. alpha doesnāt start for almost five hours, unless jimās decided he wanted to jog in the middle of gamma. heās not in the headspace for this conversation, though, and the other man probably isnāt either. ājust⦠just swing by after your shiftās done. you know where Iāll be.ā here, in his quarters. in bed, probably. heās still exhausted. āā¦we gotta deal with this one, jim. you know we canāt just⦠put it away for another day. not this. this is too big.ā
too big. TOO MUCH. thatās the whole problem. he misses earth; he misses georgia; he misses his mama; he misses his little girl, more than anything else. but if he leaves⦠if he transfers off of enterprise⦠heās gonna miss his family. heās gonna miss the ship. len knows himself well enough to know that. heās honest enough to admit ā to himself if no one else ā that heāll struggle adjusting to a life without jim. khan helped prove that to him, and heās not eager to feel that gnawing EMPTINESS in his stomach again. āI got things I need to say, but Iāll let you go. for now.āĀ
CHARLIE:
Charlie understands why Starfleet wouldnāt want these kinds of things to get out. Paralell universes can create way too many implications, and even he knows it aināt all good. The universe is enough to deal with as it is without adding in a couple million more of them out there with troubles that no one needs, because if one universe is like the others, then they would have their own problems. Charlie himself comes from a universe in the midst of a war with the Klingons after all.
So he holds the bottle, not exactly drinking from it, but he stays quiet and listens to the doctorās tale about all the things thatās happened to create this different universe. It certainly is all very crazy and rather unimaginable, but Charlie has seen enough crazy things in the world to realize that whatever humans may find crazy, life probably has more crazy things in store.
He supposes he should really be surprised, and maybe he would be if he didnāt have his grandfatherās stories. But he remembers the stories, and suddenly all of this didnāt seem to entirely crazy. Well, it is crazy, but just not too much that his brain canāt wrap around it.
Charlie holds out the bottle back to the doctor,Ā āYou look like you need it more than I doā¦I guessā¦I guess this isnāt all soā¦.crazyā¦itās more like Grandpaās stories coming trueā¦though I guess it is a little crazyā¦I guess I just never thought he was actually telling me Starfleet secrets while telling me bedtime storiesā¦ā He sighs before asking,Ā āSo I guessā¦I guess you guys didnāt have a war with the Klingons thenā¦thatās niceā¦ā
He took the bottle back, but didnāt open it. It was set down on the desk, to be banished back to the drawer it came from. The damn thing had been a birthday present, and he almost ā almost ā felt bad that heād mostly quit drinking for good. His attention returns to Charlie when he mentions the Klingons and Len barks out a laugh thatās more bitter than heād meant for it to be. He runs a hand through hair thatās twelve-hour-shift dishevelled and fixes the other with an appraising look.
āWe came close to it,ā he admits, āWar with the Klingons. Had a run-in with a guy named Khan a while back. It was⦠it was a mess, honestly.ā Thatās an understatement, but heās not about to get into that. āIād be interested in hearinā more about the differences between our timelines, actually, but Spock ā the old one, from your timeline ā he says we shouldnāt know too much ābout it. Could have ācatastrophic resultsā, or somethinā.ā
He fell quiet for a few long moments after that, his thoughts straying to Jonathan Archer. Heād left out the fact that man had passed away in his sleep a couple months ago. It had been a nice service, and heād been sad to see the man go. Not as sad as he was guessing Charlie was gonna be to hear about it. When he did finally speak again, Lenās voice was hushed, solemn.
āā¦Your grandfather was a great man.ā His hands balled themselves into fists at his sides, and he forced them to unclench. āIām sorry, that youāre not gonna get to meet this version of him. Heād⦠heād of liked to see you, I think. He took losinā you ā our you ā he took it real hard.ā

BASHIR:
Ā Ā Ā oh, thatās not good.Ā
Ā Ā Ā julian lies back down and shuts his eyesā though itās barely enough to ease his nausea or the burning of the lights. he speaks slow, trying to not aggravate his body further.Ā
Ā Ā Ā ā ⦠we were testing a few upgrades to the warp drives andā a few other systems. weapons, cloaking⦠making sure everything was in working order. we mustāve hit some subspace anomaly, iām not sure. i wasnāt on the bridge when itā¦Ā ā
Ā Ā he falls quietĀ as his head turns towards len, eyes squinting open, and finally taking in some of his surroundings. itās all federation medical equipment, no doubt, but itās old. and if this really is starfleet medical? this is state of the art for the time. which meansā¦
Ā Ā god, the department of temporal investigations is going to have his head.
Ā Ā itās second nature to prepare the hypo, give julian a cursory explanation of, āsomethinā for the nauseaā, and administer it.
Ā Ā ānow, I donāt know much ābout what went on. I just know you turned up in enterpriseās transporter room during some kinda ion storm, unconscious.ā
Ā Ā thatās all anyone could tell him when he got the call, and len can only thank whoeverās out there looking out for shipās named enterprise that theyād been near enough to spacedock to get julian here. heād woken up a few times since then, but len doubts he remembers any of them, considering how out of it heād been at the time.
Ā Ā āweāve been tryna figure out where you came from, but none of the shipās outta spacedock have reported any of their crew missinā, and we havenāt got a record of any defiant. commandās been on my ass about gettinā you up and about so they can drill you, but Iām thinkinā youāre gonna need a couple more daysā¦?ā itās an obvious out heās offering, and itās the least he can do.
AELLA:
For a moment, there was nothing ā then, it hit her. A gray guilt, the same color as his pain ā aching, burning, soldering away all else. Fingers tensed on her cup, but otherwise, she remained placid, unchangeable. Her lips did not shake, and though she paled, she was already pale enough from exhaustion. He breathed deeply and the movement hurtĀ her, somehow, somehow bone-deep and reverberating.Ā
Ā Ā Every night I was home.Ā
Ā Ā What did thatĀ mean?
Ā Ā He apologized for his emotion, like so many before him had in her presence. She understood. Many had not interacted with an empath prior to their introduction to her. She held up a flat hand to disregard his statement.Ā
Ā Ā āNo apology is necessary where offense is not taken.ā Especially about this. āI, ah⦠do not know who of my ensigns you do and do not know very personally. Ensign Talan?ā She was Andorian, but Aella would not use that as a distinguishing feature to which to describe. ( She had been called too often the BetazoidĀ for that. )Ā There was a pause while she gathered her thoughts. Tell me more about this translation you wanna do. Her first inclination was to say why? For conversationās sake? Did it have something to do with her mental health? Was he checking up on her?Ā āIt is not work-related.ā Part of her tone sounded guilty. She felt her cheeks heat as she stared down into her tea.Ā āIt is⦠well, I have⦠I call it leisure work. I understand such is an oxymoron.ā But she just wished to work on her language! That was all she had ever done! It was comforting. Was that truly so bad?
āām apologisinā cus I know how bad it can get for empaths, beinā around people who let their emotions run rampant the way I do most times.ā His voice was quiet, but no less intense for that.
It was nice, hearing Aella admit that she had a guilty pleasure. A tiny smile tugged at the corners of his lips and he ducked his head. Leisure work. Only Aella would consider a hobby any kind of work. āI know Talan.ā Knew her because she was always prompt for her physicals and didnāt bitch about getting them, like certain other people on the damn ship, and even aside from that, most people on the ship had passed through his sickbay a time or two. āSheās a goodāun.ā
It occurred to him that his interest Aellaās personal life might have been⦠misinterpreted, the thought making him frown. He lifted his gaze to meet Aellaās eyes once more, ensuring heād be heard and ā hopefully ā understood. āNow, I hope you donāt think this is me checkinā up on you or nothinā. Well, I āspose it is, in a way, but not cus Iām your CMO. Iād just like to know more about you, Aella. Thereās nothinā wrong with that, is there? I like feelinā connected to yāall. Can be hard sometimes, when Iām shut up in my sickbay.ā
Not that he didnāt sneak onto the bridge to make a nuisance of himself up there more often than he shouldāveā¦
